Solid midrange thriller
Call-Me-Mr-Smith17 December 2020
I am a tad puzzled by low scores, giving it one or two stars is simply not fair. The movie is more than competently made, some good camera work, decent acting and enthusiastic score. Granted, it does have shortcomings, holes in the story line, slips here and there, but it never feels unwatchable. Eve more so, I find it to be perfect for late night watching that does not require full attention. Solid 5/10 and, as a top 1K, I stick to it.

Thriller by the numbers and the number is 4!
omendata15 June 2020
Good to see the venerable Gary Cole doing his stuff again but even he fails to raise this rather pedestrian movie with overblown soundtrack and some truly dismal acting above a mediocre 4/10 and that is being generous.

If you are in Covid lockdown with nothing to do it will suffice as a wet Sunday afternoon diversion but there is nothing new here, it is a bit like an episode of CSI or any other cop show on tv.

Evil within
kosmasp17 March 2021
What are certain peoples motivations? Why are people commiting certaing evil acts? I don't think you will get the answers to that or any similar questions. What you will get is the descend of our main actor who loses a lot and "acts" accordingly. By having actors that can actually act and have some weight they add to their roles, the movie wins a couple of points.

If you are good with that, the movie will satisfy your needs. It is a good enough thriller and action movie. Gary Cole - it's been a while since I last saw him on screen. Way underrated and really good. Of course he is not the main focus, but he is important. Again it doesn't matter why things happen .. but they do happen ... Wonder what you would do if ...

Oops! Somebody grabbed my gun again
ofumalow11 June 2020
How many times would you find it credible that angry, determined people--particularly trained police officers--would lose control of their guns simply because somebody reached over and grabbed it from them? Well, you're about to find out, if you watch this stupid thriller in which that is the single most unintentionally funny element. It's a suspense-free serial killer drama with the entire focus on Shawn Ashmore's cop, whose wife is a victim at the begnning.

Every step of his revenge is as predictable as it is hackneyed, made worse by the fact that Ashmore just doesn't have the gravitas for this kind of part. Other performances are adequate (Gary Cole is effective enough as the main villain), but the writing is witless and the direction takes it all waaaaay too seriously. It's not a good movie, and despite what some others have said, I didn't find it "so bad it's good"--though yes, those "dang the bad guy got my gun again" moments did make me laugh out loud. But the rest is just mediocre genre trash, without any eccentric ideas or style to make it interesting.

This is 2020's answer to The Room. Tommy Wiseau would be proud.
DeaditeGaz928 March 2020
Anderson Falls is a thriller following Detective Jeff Anderson who, after his wife's suicide, becomes convinced that she has been murdered. Obsessed with his investigation, he finds out that his wife was the victim of a team of father-and-son serial killers and sets out to stop them.

I've officially found 2020's answer to The Room. Anderson Falls contains raspberry blowing, lots of snot, plenty of out of focus shots and gloriously awful acting; this is immediately trash royalty. Upon seeing the poster, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect but I knew my expectations weren't very high and after the film had to be rearranged to the end of the day due to a corrupt file meaning it had to be streamed via a private link on Vimeo. All of the latter was shown on the main screen whilst they were trying to get it to work and the audience was in the room. The lack of professionalism lowered my expectations even more. The final nail in the coffin was director Julien Seri introducing the film with a very Tommy Wiseau-like speech and describing Lin Shaye as "gorgeous but she doesn't have a lot of energy". Little did I know, nothing could prepare me for the next 84 minute trashterpiece that was to follow. I watch a lot of bad movies, I love a so bad it's good film and every once in a while a film like this comes along that is just so terrible that it has countless rewatch value. This genuinely is up there with the likes of The Room, Troll 2 and Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2. Right from the get go, the script is so badly written to the point that no one actually talks like real human beings in this movie. This is also thanks to the horrendous line delivery by each actor in this film.

X-Men star, Shawn Ashmore is an absolute scene stealer as lead character Detective John Anderson but, of course, a scene stealer for all the wrong reasons. Ashmore quite frequently goes from providing a half hearted performance and looking like he doesn't want to be there to providing a performance so over the top to the point that it looked like his character was about to explode at any given second. My best example of the latter is a scene in which he pins loads of photos up to a wall in his old apartment, starts writing on them and starts screaming "I hate you" at them. This is then followed by a strange edit with multiple versions of Ashmore pulling stupid faces in black and white. Even his more subtle scenes, including him sitting in his car for five minutes whilst the background regularly changes or having a full conversation with his 8/9 year old son about the suspects of his wife's death and then telling his mother that he didn't know he was speaking to his son because he didn't check his caller ID, are an absolute blast to watch because of how awful the performance is. Poor Lin Shaye gets dragged into this disaster too as Jeff's mother. Shaye gives one of the better performances but it's moments like a terrible dub of her shouting "Yeah! Go on! Go get that boy!" at her grandson in the park that demonstrate she's also no exception when it comes to this movie's dreadful performances. Gary Cole and Richard Harmon play the movie's big bad guys and their performances are almost just as bad as Ashmore's performance. Neither are intimidating and that's hardly surprising considering their motives are dumb and a lot of the scenes of them "suiciding women" (yes, an actual term used in the movie) are just the same scenes being shown over and over again.

As much as a lot of the issues come from the acting and writing, there are also huge issues with the filmmaking skills. The opening credits use the most boring and basic font you could possibly use for a movie. The editing is so strange and ham fisted to the point it's quite jarring. The camera work is an absolute mess with some of it being so lazy that it contains extended sequences of the camera being left in just one place, making it feel like someone accidentally left it there during a shot rehearsal, and far too many out of focus shots to the point it started to look like no one on set knew how to focus a camera. A lot of the time, it comes across as though no one actually paid any attention to this film before saying it was okay to be released. It was the out of focus scenes, the random fart noise that may have been Ashmore blowing a raspberry or just a random fart that was left in and multiple scenes of big bits of snot flying from Ashmore's nose that had me questioning why on earth the director thought this was okay. Even Jeff's wife's paintings (that were described as dark) look like a child had painted them for a school project. Usually with bad movies, it's easy to tell if the director's heart is in the right places but with this movie, I'm not even sure. It's incredibly rushed and incredibly messy.

Overall, Anderson Falls was one of the worst yet most entertaining movies I watched at Glasgow FrightFest this year. Everything about it was so terrible yet I laughed more than I've laughed at any comedy movie in such a long time. Congratulations Julien Seri, this is a milestone in so bad it's good filmmaking.

What happened here?
fairlesssam18 September 2020
With a cast of this calibre I really can't understand why a movie would turn out this badly. I think the script and plot just wasn't strong enough. The plot seemed ridiculous, shallow and unrealistic. Maybe it was trying to be something 'different and original' but failing miserably.

The whole thing is a cringy epic fail.

Darkness Falls is a decent crime thriller. There is nothing wrong with the directing, acting or screenwriting, and it's never dull or boring.

Epic failure to execute what could have had great potential as far as plot line. Felt like watching a rejected entry to film school. So many things wrong it's hard to sum up so would just suggest a hard pass and save an hour and a half out of your life you can never get back.

saptesh7865 July 2020
Good suspense thriller. Do not judge with negative ratings. Movie is worth to watch to them who loves suspense thriller. Well story and well climax make movie watchable. However some flaws too but can be ignorable. Detective is looks like Brad Pitt. The story of a detective and a serial killer.

Give me your gun so I can shoot your police captain boss. The whole movie was just full of crap, stupid plots and lines. I lost count how many time the detective gave up his gun to the killer, even inside the interrogation room. Guys, don't watch this POS, it's honestly the worst movie I have ever seen. Please give the movie director a dick of the year award.

Great Little Movie
harlan-roberts19 December 2020
I really like movies like this, very personal stories, a regular guy steps his game up a few notches (cop-to-profiler, and not all cops could do that). There's a scene in the park with Lyn and Shawn that got a jumping fist-pump. They also manage to knock a couple cop movie cliches off the shelf.

A pretty good movie...

I'm not sure why all of the severely negative reviews. I enjoyed this movie. Sure, some faults, but...what the heck! It was pretty good and not a waste of my time on a late Sunday evening.

Started great, then got ridculous fast!
bdunnit8 June 2021
I thought I was in for a good movie as this started out really well. The way the serial killers plotted out their murders to be a close to perfect crime was a great premise. The cold reality of it reminded me of "Henry: Portrait of a serial killer". Then the movie sinks faster than a rock in a lake. As soon as the detective went into "think like the killers" mode, it got stupid. Then he makes so many bad decisions that don't make sense, which ends up getting more innocent people killed. This movie could have been good, but the writer got in the way with some unplausible stupid ideas. The ending was just as bad and didn't make sense. The big emotional moment in the end was meaningless. This is a good example of how NOT to make a movie. Pure stupidity.

Just. No.
mcmasterrick15 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I thought that low point was when Jeff screams "I hate you" at all the victims' pictures, tears down pictures and throws bulletin boards around, and then tells his captain that "he thought like them" and developed a list of women he'd kill next if he was them. She naturally refuses to provide the manpower to find this asinine crusade, at which point he basically just GUESSES with one woman from the list, and the killers happen to show up. Like I said, I THOUGHT that would be the low point, but then now that they have shown up, he busts in on them and has them DEAD TO RIGHTS with his gun on the killer with the gun. He's been after these guys for months, they KILLED HIS WIFE, and now they are over another woman in her tub, drugged, already slit her wrists. Two bullets, over. Instead, they somehow make our idiot hero believe he can "still save her" by turning his gun over to them. At which point they go on to kidnap his son after killing two more cops.

Oh, and all that other stuff about just taking guns from people that others said. The action was stupid, but the plot was unforgivable.

The Evil That Men Do
lavatch2 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"Darkness Falls" (a.k.a., "Anderson Falls") developed an interesting pair of antagonists in Jeff Anderson, a decent detective whose wife is murdered by the psychopathic Mark Witver. The film is both a physical and psychological duel between the two characters.

Unfortunately, there was an amateur feel to the clumsy dialogue, the slow pacing, and the incredulity of the events. It was especially disappointing that the violence was so intense, especially in the gruesome murder of Jeff's wife.

The environments in the film did not feel like real places, especially the police station where Mark gets the drop on Jeff and his police captain, then marches them out of the building. Improbably, no employee or official of a law enforcement facility was in sight. Then, in a nearly farcical maneuver, Jeff returns the favor by taking back the gun and getting the drop on Mark in the car.

The climactic scene was also overly violent, and it stretched credibility beyond the pale that Mark would receive multiple gunshots without any greater reaction than wincing and his son Adam would be beaten to a pulp, then bounce back up like a jack-in-the-box.

The film's theme apparently went something like men become evil when they have problems with their mommies. But it never was very convincing or insightful.

Awful
traceyj-4576721 February 2021
The acting was flat, the cinematic direction was worse and the CGI (especially the blood coming out of an open wound scene) was worse. I feel like they let someone's kid do the CGI to save money. I just wish I had read reviews before watching.

Anderson Falls...short
jaked-4703024 January 2021
What an utter disappointment. Things began quite well with an intriguing intro, and decent suspenseful acting and story. But immediately upon the introduction of the the lead character, we are shown it's true colours and "bland white wash" is a preposterous overstatement. Every aspect of this movie is almost unbearably terrible. The music is out of place and distracting. The cast is odd and misplaced. The dialogue is amateur at absolute best. The story is predictable, dull and overused. And the acting...the acting is disgraceful for a movie of this calibre, I would expect this thespia from a b movie with the budget of a undergrad student.

Please I beg you, don't bother with this dribble.

Solid procedural crime drama/Serial Killer Film
ajkbiotech22 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The central figure is a policeman whose wife appears to have committed suicide at the start of the film.

The film shows us that two despicable serial killers forced her to down pills at Gun point and then slashed her wrists to make it appear as a suicide.

Time passes. Our hero is obsessed with the notion that his wife was murdered, and not a suicide, but he's only acting on a hunch.

Slowly, methodically, over years, he gathers proof of his hypothesis until he is finally able to go to his supervising Lieutenant and present over 100 suicides which have a common thread, namely that they were all affluent, famous and actually murdered, and not suicides at all.

And now he knows who the killers are.

The rest of the film is tremendously exciting as our protagonist exacts his just revenge after many, many years.

A great, great tale of justice, revenge and neo-noir justice.

Well done by all.

Kudoes!

Not Worth the Frustration...
terriaxelson5 February 2024
A sad misuse of quality, talented "actors", who must have questioned "why did I accept this script"? Other than a paycheck at an otherwise limited production period during COVID.

Two, maybe three of the lead characters are so cliche, you almost find yourself talking to the screen with expletives. Just why, is all I could muster from scene to scene, until finally turning it off to go to bed - early.

Clearly, the character of a police officer was not researched, or the Writer has a perspective that they're all emotionally unhinged and careless to have include so many instances that humiliate even a Rookie.

Imagine Ben Stein reading the basic themes from multiple police dramas. When complete, you're told it was a single story and, for some reason, you're supposed to care. But you don't.

Why was this ever released?
courtneycook-488035 January 2021
Were they trolling when they released this film? The timing of the music and volume was off throughout the movie. The shot of him after arguing with his boss in his apartment was shaky and too close and just weird? Why did they wait so long to introduce the audience to the fact that the protagonist's wife was an important person? Why did the captain argue after telling the main character he was right? What was she so angry about? Why was the mother's little speech in the park so unnatural? Why wasn't there more explanation about how a list of potential witnesses was developed? Where did the name of the movie come from? It was never referenced in the movie. This movie was absolute trash. I've never been so angry about a film I've watched in my life. I would have been better off clicking on YouTube watching a little kid toy review.
