Gone are the days when HBO, PBS and Showtime ruled the documentary marketplace. Netflix and Amazon — as well as the recent emergence of digital distributors including Apple, Facebook, Hulu and YouTube Red — have changed the face of the docu genre: There is a newfound excitement around unscripted projects. But with the rapid nonfiction platform expansion has come a strong demand for content — and not just any old content. Content that taps into the cultural zeitgeist. Content that tackles the latest headlines. Content that audiences want to better understand. Or at least try and understand.

This week, the network announced they've ordered an additional episode of the TV show Killing Richard Glossip.From Joe Berlinger, the docuseries "follows the story of two men convicted of murder - one on death row, and the other sentenced to life without parole - who give two very different accounts of what led to the slaying of Barry Van Treese on January 7, 1997 at the Best Budget Inn in Oklahoma City. Investigation Discovery tonight launches a new four-part documentary series, Killing Richard Glossip, examining whether the titular death row inmate in Oklahoma is actually innocent. The miniseries is helmed by Joe Berlinger, best known as the director of Paradise Lost, a trio of feature-length documentaries that contributed to the release of the nationally known West Memphis Three after they spent more than two decades behind bars. Glossip was slapped with a charge of murder for hire following the brutal killing of Best Budget Inn motel owner Barry Van Treese in 1997.
