Clean kids Christmas movie, no barn burner though
the_doofy14 November 2017
I appreciated the fact that the movie really was G, which was surprising for me considering Mariah's innuendo singing videos.

The singing was pretty decent, no real highs or lows, but all in all a good listen.

The voice dubbing left something to be desired, U have a woman born in 1970 dubbing about a pre-teen character, and it doesn't really work. I think Mariah needed someone giving her some constructive criticism in this instead of a bunch of kiss ups giving her feed back. Fred Astaire did the narrating and singing in 'Santa clause is comin to town', and dubbed an older character, to make a point.

I really liked how the script kept the focus on the dog plot, as a lot of advertised dog movies are not in reality focused on a dog, but rather the dog ends up being in more of a sub plot within the movie. Not so in this one. Of course it is an animation, so this is not a perfect comparison.

I can recommend this movie for kids, it focuses on puppies and a child's interaction with her parents (yep, a Christmas video movie in which a child has both a Dad and Mom). The movie in of itself is not any kind of classic, but it is a serviceable G family Christmas watch, younger kids may like it quite a bit.

Serviceable Family Holiday Film
Christmas-Reviewer8 April 2019
Review Date 4/8/2019

I Have Reviewed OVER 500 "Christmas Films and Specials". Please BEWARE Of films and specials with just one review! For instance When "It's a POSITIVE" chances are that the reviewer was involved with the production. "If its Negative" then they may have a grudge against the film for whatever reason. I am fare about these films.

All I Want For Christmas Is You (also known as Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You) is a 2017 direct-to-video computer-animated Christmas film based on the song by Mariah Carey and the book by Carey herself and Colleen Madden. The film stars the voices of Mariah Carey, Breanna Yde, and Henry Winkler.

Young Mariah (Breanna Yde) desperately wants a puppy for Christmas, but her parents are not convinced that she should have one. They agree to let Mariah dog-sit the puppy Jack (Dee Bradley Baker) and if she can take care of Jack, then she can have a dog of her very own.

The animation is very strange to me. However the story is cute. This is not the greatest Christmas family movie but it is enjoyable (Once). The story centers around a girl and a dog and you can't help but loving that little dog.

This Christmas film would not complete without a message and that is what the film does right. It shows us what "The Christmas Season is Really About" it doesn't preach.. "It shows and not tells".

A vanity project for the ego centric Princess Mariah if I ever saw one
Ed-Shullivan6 December 2020
Wow, I can't believe the people around Mariah Carey even allowed her to produce and star in this her own vanity project. Hidden under the guise about a little girl named "Mariah" (no surprise there) who agrees with her dad to take care of a somewhat rogue puppy with the agreement that if she is capable of showing she is responsible enough by first taking good care of this rambunctious mutt she can then go back to the pet shop and buy the purebred dog she really wants.

I don't think there were many scenes in this film that Mariah does not narrate, sing, and/or feature in the scenes. Heck even in the closing so called "credits" as the list of names is scrolled through all we get to see is the adult Mariah Carey playing in the snow singing one of her songs. I would much rather have seen the actual people behind the other voices in this animated Christmas special, but no, we are subjugated to watching the Princess Mariah frolic in the white snow in her red coat all alone as her voice is heard singing the movies theme song.

The best line in this Mariah vanity project which was supposed t be a children's animated Christmas special was "The End".

I give it a 4 out of 10 IMDB rating

Mean spirited attempt
babydmeg19 December 2019
This movie didn't have anything to show kids what Christmas is all about. It just showed mean people. It also presented 2 people not having fun, competing and cheating. It was a horrible experience. I didn't like it at all. Horrible, horrible, horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awful awful awful

Do not let your kids watch this movie. I never write reviews, but this movie particularly frustrated and disgusted me enough to write a review. This is about a spoiled brat who lies, cheats, steals, name calls, manipulates, trespasses, and is downright rude. She stomps around the whole movie, grumpy as can be. Eventually, she gets exactly what she wants, surprise surprise. AWFUL. I wanted to turn it off 30 minutes in.

Cute, but there are much better family-friendly films out there.
sharjadoremonamour12 December 2019
I gave it two stars because I liked the mixed race family element; you don't see that a lot in tv and movies. Especially for children. Being of mixed race and being in an interracial marriage, I was happy to show my four-year-old son families like ours.

But I was confused why Mariah didn't look of mixed race at all, and why she had long straight blond hair when her siblings had curly brown hair. I feel like it was a nod to Mariah and her vanity, which has no place in a kids movie. Also, Mariah is irritating as a narrator.

Overall, it was cute enough but I hope my son doesn't ask to watch it again. We've watched The Santa Clause 3 three times in two days and I'd rather watch that a fourth time than watch this again.

underrated big time

This movie has been so underrated by a few viewers. Mariah thought that Princess was her perfect dog but it ended up being Jack. This movie is good for all ages and I totally recommend watching it.

Don't Pet yourself
kosmasp28 November 2020
No wait I meant kid yourself! The song was written about ... well not pets! I'm certain of that. But it is being used here to tell a story of a girl (Mariah), who wants not just a dog for Christmas, but her dream dog. Now when I saw this on Prime, I thought "you've got to be kidding me, yes?". But they weren't and I have to admit, it is not half as bad as I expected this to be.

It is of course aimed mainly at the very young ones. But it has a social message amongst all the mayhem it does create. And with the main/theme song being as great as it is ... what can go wrong? The movie may not be anywhere near top standards animation wise, but it does have its heart in the right place. If you are a cynic (I kind think I am too, but apparently I do have a heart - which occasionally works), you may feel differently ... just be aware what this is and what it tries to achieve. This nothing more, but also nothing less

Dog Abuse
demtemflakes21 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is absolutely terrible. I disliked it in many ways. The animation style is lazy, and boring. The girl doesn't even let her dog halfway in the movie have proper care. I don't even want to see it.

All I want for Christmas is a good kids movie
Galop_Inferno4 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Basing a movie on a novelty song is always a gamble but one directed at children and of this caliber... that's a bad idea. Sure, the protagonist will inevitably go through her heel-face turn but on the way there, she's an obnoxious, entitled, selfish spoiled brat.

The narration provided by Mariah Carey herself condescends and boosts her ego in every way possible. Other characters aren't without fault either. Mariah's father sets the plot forward via lies and deceit, her grandfather trespasses on and terrorizes a neighbor's property out of spite, her younger siblings seem to take every remotely negative comment out of Mariah's mouth as the world's biggest insult. But of course, as mentioned above, Mariah, our main character, is the worst.

She abandons her friends for popularity, she treats the puppy with an obscene amount of contempt (constantly talking about the dog she'd rather have; she only gives him any proper care in the climax), and she's rude to her family on a regular basis.

You owe your young better than this. There are infinitely better Christmas cartoons out there. Watch anything but this.

Just no.
sauroeleanor19 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Ok..let's begin

1. Dog abuse

I believe that there were several clues that abuse was included in this crappy movie.

Mariah not properly taking care of the dog, yelling at him, etc

Jack didn't deserve that because y'all know what you're doing.

This is basic abuse- and can you believe the fact..this is for younger children. You get what this means, right? I can't even process that it's that disturbing. Just no.

She is too perfect all the time, it's so weird.

Don't waste your time or poison your children.
rosslorin4 December 2021
Finally, there's a movie that answers the question: How does a vain, materialistic, shallow, narcissistic person view pets and Christmas?

Now well. Because she's vain and materialistic and shallow and narcissistic. This movie made me sad because Mariah Carey is actually a mother and God only knows what kind of "values" she's instilling in her children.

All I Want for Christmas is Smug...
tarponlarry-2437719 December 2017
Sure it is the most of basic of Christmas "I want a puppy tales" but the total lack of soul in this thing is instantly off-putting... the animation includes the most flat and lifeless I rendering I have seen in anything since early, I mean really early nintendo. The pack terrible story around Mariah Carey songs is so boring and lifeless. Surely this is for the youngest of kids, but it reads like a Mariah I wish I was Disney Princess fodder... Shallow... at least in the live action versions of these tales the puppies are cute... not so here. This would be interesting only if the puppy in the story was replaced with a live, digitally inserted Nick Canon... otherwise, only purchase this thing if you plan on leaving the room... I made it about twenty minutes because it showed up on Amazon Prime and I did one of those, "How bad can this be?" quests. I love bad movies but this is so bad its not even fun to make fun of...

All I Want for Christmas Is You
jboothmillard21 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It took 26 years for it to happen, but fans of the popstar sometimes referred to as the "Queen of Christmas" were delighted when her most recognisable (Christmas) song finally reached Number One in the UK, two weeks before Christmas Day. To celebrate this achievement, I naturally listened to the song, and I found out about this straight-to-DVD computer-animated movie based on it. Basically, Mariah Carey narrates her own story of when she finally had her wish granted at Christmas. Little Mariah (Breanna Yde) year after year wished for a puppy for Christmas (and birthdays) from her parents. But they always refused, as her father Bud (Phil Morris) is allergic to dogs, and her mother Penelope (Lacey Chabert) wants to keep the house clean. During her childhood, with Christmas approaching, Mariah is given the opportunity to experience owning a dog when Bud brings one home to "babysit". Jack is a puppy Bud says belongs to her uncle, and she is to be responsible for looking after him, and if she does so well, her parents may reconsider their constant refusal. Mariah dreams of owning a dog she calls "Princess" from the local pet shop, and the parents have reserved the dog ready to potentially buy her, if Mariah proves she can look after Jack. But Jack is a very mischievous naughty dog who cannot control himself, be ordered, behave, and constantly causes accidents and mishaps for Mariah and her family. This includes ruining Christmas decorations in the house, biting and pulling things, and ruining a public choir performance. Eventually, Jack does something that angers Mariah to the point when she tells him that she hates him, causing him to run away. After Jack has disappeared, Mariah's father confesses that the dog is not her uncle's dog, he was a stray that he happened to find, and he brought him home, being an uncontrollable dog, so that Mariah would change her mind about wanting to own a dog. Bud accepts that Mariah, although unable to control Jack's naughty behaviour, has been responsible for cleaning up after him, and allows her to buy Princess from the pet shop. She witnesses a little boy keen to buy Princess for himself, and initially Bud assumes that Mariah still wants her "dream dog". But Mariah realises she truly loves Jack, having spent so much time with him, and allows the little boy to buy Princess if he wants to. Mariah sits on her bed and wishes for her puppy to come home ("All I Want for Christmas for You"), and she, her family, many children and neighbours go looking for Jack. In the end, Jack accepts Mariah's apology and wanting to bring him home, he becomes part of the family, and they celebrate Christmas together. The end credits feature the full original 1994 version and music video of Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You". Also starring Henry Winkler as Grandpa Bill, Connie Jackson as Grandma Lucy, Dee Bradley Baker as Jack, Charlie Adler as Santa / Mr. Ingersoll / Dougie's Dad, and Michelle C. Bonilla as Principal Reyes. The voice cast are okay, with Yde as young Mariah, and Mariah herself narrating, the animation is rather simple, the story is predictable, the attempts at jokes fall flat, and the new Mariah songs among the action are mixed. To be honest, the only really good bit is the end credits with the original iconic song, overall, this is a silly seasonal animated comedy. Adequate!

Terrible morality lessons for kids while indulging Mariah's ego
stevendmartin-5405322 December 2021
Summary: little girl wants a dog to gain popularity, abandons her original friends in pursuit of approval from the 'cool kids', narrator strokes ego-centric traits of the "model UN ambassador" main character while denigrating her siblings and pet dog throughout, blames a dog for everything she does wrong and finally, after her dog runs away, she immediately abandons her search in lieu of visiting the pet shop for a replacement. The credits roll with a bunch of glamour shorts of Mariah playing the snow. Not a great message around humility, responsibility or character for my young ones.

Using a mutt to get to a pure bred
carkid-7916527 December 2021
Movie is all's bout Mariah Carey being perfect. She wants a pure bred dog. So the family uses a stray that of course is just a horrible dog compared to the pet shop dog. Nice messaging. Once Mariah proves herself because she still wanted a dog after having to deal with the uglier dog the father takes her to the pet shop to get the better dog. No joke. We are supposed to be moved to tears when she eventually lets a different girl take the pure bred instead of her taking it home. The parents then say I guess we'll just keep the mutt as if a pet isn't a responsibility but hey after being hated by everyone it's run away so maybe it'll turn up. Mariah wouldn't even let the dog sleep in a dog bed. Rather keep it in a shelf high up so the dog couldn't reach. Craziest movie I ever saw lol. If you want your dogs to hate shelter dogs and love pet shop dogs this is your gem.

Toxic values
bluebwings18 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It has a concept I could have gotten behind but at the end of the day it missed the mark.

I understand where the parents were coming from with showing her how hard a dog can be to take care of. I'm not even mad about that. I'm flustered that when the story ends the dog wasn't bonded with her, she had already decided on a different puppy ergo pupster was used for a gaslighting purpose. Then when she learns she will be allowed her puppy of choice she is met by an adult who has allowed another child to get excited about the same dog with the statement, "oh! I didn't know if you were going to come back!" Like...woman! They left a deposit on this dog! Did it occur to you to check with them?!

Then two adults and a child lay a level of guilt on this little girl so if she takes the dog she wants she's a jerk. Teaching kids, "it doesn't matter if you want something, if someone else wants it you need to give it to them" woof! And she gives up what she wants and songs about how all she wants is this other dog which... she has expressed through the whole movie she doesn't like.

She apologizes to the dog for being obsessed with the other dog....the other dog she had been promised! "I'm sorry for treating you like a temporary dog, even though that is exactly how you were presented to me!"

Had the movie never included the other dog and instead she fell in love with this pain in the butt mutt then it could have had something. Instead it just teaches toxic principles to kids.

Gave it 3 stars only cause my kids were shocked I didn't like it so... as long as you let your kids know she didn't have to give up her desired dog just because of the guilt trip she didn't pack for... then it's a fine fluffy movie.

Skip this horrific movie glorifying animal abuse!
kronik_crush27 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
How could such a horrific movie be tagged as Christmas for children?!?! Mariah & her father are horrible! First, Mariah wants a puppy for Christmas. Fair enough. Then the father brings home a stray he found & lies to everyone about it belonging to his brother. If she could care for it, she's ready for a puppy. He does it with the intention she will fail, & he can take this innocent baby to the pound, after the rough start it already had, thinking he finally found a safe place to call home. Then she treats him poorly & yells at him bc he's not the puppy she wants. She goes through the motions of having a puppy, but not showing him love. He finds the bed she got for her "real" puppy, thinking he finally found a bed to call his own, & she yells at him, telling him he's just practice & not worthy of this bed. In different words, but that's what she said. Thankfully, the mother & grandmother weren't aware of the plan, & were horrified when they found out. What kind of a children's Christmas movie celebrates animal neglect & emotional abuse? Yes, she learns her lesson in the end, but that's no excuse for the treatment she gives him the entire rest of the movie. A sensitive child will be traumatized! Skip this one. I wish I could give it negative stars go back & I watch this!

Forget the few bah humbug reviews...
whatwazdat21 December 2017
Forget the few bah humbug reviews. You know reviews will always be bias towards the negative side since Mariah is involved. What the heck do kids know about the quality of the cartoon, the quality of Mariah's music, etc. It's a basic story that every children can relate to, and if they're glued to the screen, what more can you ask for?

Perfect for young children
sophie_reid-089883 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Perfect movie for little children. It is a non threatening, nothing scary movie for little children. Minimal drama. Ideal for little children and watchable for adults. Nothing you have to pause or fast forward. I don't understand the negative reviews, it's a movie for young children. There are minimal non scary choices out there for children and this is definitely one of them. I highly recommend it for a child under 5y especially if they are sensitive to scary over dramatic films. It is soft and gentle the only upsetting thing: spoiler, is that the dog runs off, it is eventually found safe and well. Additionally there are some big emotions along the way. This could cause some angst in very little ones but it is far more gentle than most movies aimed at young children. Finally, the animation is fine/perfect for little children, not over complicated and nothing unrealistic.

Great new Christmas movie
jewelch21 December 2020
A very likable little heroine, a trouble-making dog, and an ethnically diverse, extended family of unique, engaging characters keep the giggles coming and warm the heart by the story's end. The creative team brings Mariah Carey's book to life with style and spirit. All of the performances, including the kids', are excellent. Carey's songs and narration are well-integrated into the upbeat tale. A subplot featuring Grandpa Bill's (Henry Winkler) competition with a neighbor over Christmas decorations that light up the neighborhood is fun as well. What's more, Little Mariah learns something as she struggles to master the art of responsible pet care. All I Want for Christmas Is You is a sweet addition to holiday movies for young families. Yes I recommend it James Welch Henderson, Arkansas 12/19/2020
