Lars Mikkelsen is worth every minute spent watching this
valeriaaurino25 July 2023
I have really appreciated the way Lars Mikkelsen tells this story. Really enjoyable. I also find this documentary very helpful to memorise the highlights of ancient history. I have only watched the first 3 episodes so far, and I am blown away.

I am learning a lot of things I had no clue about.

The mix of interviews with professional, acted reconstruction and narration by Lars Mikkelsen makes this so interesting and enjoyable. My 7-year old daughter is completely taped to the screen when we watch this. The only criticism I could think of: I am really missing subtext. I am sure foreigners would also enjoy this product.

Excellent and highly informative

Definitely worth your time, no clue where all this "left wing fake news" stuff comes from in the other reviews. Gives a great insight into where the danish values come from, as well as being critical of the sources they use. It is also not afraid to show the good as well as the bad parts of danish leaders, and Lars Mikkelsen narrates everything excellently.

It's just the best thing I've ever seen. "Absolutely brilliant" as Martin Tyler would say 10/10. This is a masterpiece with all the elements of good filmmaking. Love it.

A Decent Result to A Near-Impossible Challenge
Kim_Kobusch_Simonsen23 April 2020
Can the entire history of a country be told in 10 hours? Probably not. But Historien om Danmark (2017) does a pretty good job.

In this 10 episode documentary, selective parts of Danish history is told through narration, reconstructions and interviews. The narration and reconstructions are mixed together in a very fluent way, which gives a sense of walking through history. In order to provide evidence and historical context, experts on specific time periods have been interviewed. A few times we see how the experts work, which I find strengthens their autority. I find the narration to be done very well, the interviews to be relevant and the reconstructions slightly overdramatic.

My main criticism on the documentary is that the process of selecting events leave out a lot of the transitions between periods. This leaves the documentary series with several continuity breaks at best. Some of the events chosen also seem to be chosen out of their importance today rather than their relevance to the past. The most obvious example of this is how pre-20th century women in general had very little individual impact on history but are heavily featured in the series.

Several people on the right side of the political spectrum in Denmark have found the last 2 episodes of the series to be left-leaning. Since these periods were the longest periods with the socialdemocrats in power it seems necessary to me that socialism was in focus. But I do agree to some extend that these episodes go to far in painting socialism as the most important factor in giving Danish peoople better lives and overlooking important progress from the other side of the politcal spectrum. However, this is a minor criticism that has little influence on my overall rating.

Altogether, I find that Historien om Danmark (2017) takes on a near impossible challenge and manages to come out with an entertaining and informative product with unfortunate time-gaps, slightly over-dramatic reconstructions and some politically motivated cherry-picked events. My rating of 6 (almost 7) represents an experience of something that I enjoyed watching but am unlikely to return to.

Bad

DR, the producer of this film, has a long story of left wing propaganda. In Denmark the Danish people call DR the communist TV or the red people.

Many experts in Danishs history wrote articles after this left wing movie was made public. A common concern was, that a lot of fact was twisted, removed and edited. All downsides from communism was removed from the story and all downsides from left wing poltics was neglected. Furthermore the producers removed all success stories made by other than the left wing. Historical facts was twisted to create in a wild left wing success story, and the result is this fiction-movie about Denmark.

History expert was very concerned whatever people believed in this left wing propaganda movie and recommended, that this movie wasn't used in any educational situation, because most of the facts was wrong.

Fake news
katjalyngclausen29 September 2019
This is a fake history documentary.

Documentary should be a nonfictional film intended to document reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education, or maintaining a history. This documentary was made to glorify left wing politics in Denmark with no regards to history or facts.
