During food shortage, commoners' protest against the legally dubious export of grain to Lissabon is ruthlessly suppressed on MP and justice of the peace Warleggan's orders, and the accidental death of a Portuguese sailor becomes a murder trial against three youngsters, including Demelza's siblings Drake and Sam Carne. Ross tries to defend them without telling her, but the trial is rushed so they are already on death row before he even arrives.
