Sonic the Hedgehog 2 wrapped up with a major Shadow tease and, last month, we learned that Keanu Reeves will lend his voice to the character (making countless fan casts a reality in the process).
Today, a first look at the villain-turned-anti-hero has been revealed (via SFFGazette.com) thanks to a promo banner for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The titular character is shown alongside Tails and Knuckles, with Shadow looming large in the background.
We'd hoped a trailer might be released alongside If when that opened in theaters last weekend; sadly, there was no sign of Sonic, so we're hoping the sneak peek races online sooner rather than later.
Shadow the Hedgehog debuted in 2001's Sonic Adventure 2. Created by Dr. Eggman's grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik, Shadow was designed as the Ultimate Life Form, with abilities surpassing those of Sonic. His creation aimed to unlock the secrets of immortality...

Who doesn’t love a little competition? In the tech world, you’ve got “flagship killers” as an actual mobile segment, and in the gaming world, it comes in the form of a comparatively smaller developer influenced by the big guys and gives them a run for their money. While we’re all excited for Elden Ring‘s Shadow of the Erdtree Dlc to make its way, it might not all be smooth sailing for FromSoftware.

For mecha combat enthusiasts, it really doesn’t get much better than FromSoftware’s Armored Core series. The franchise has long delivered challenging and highly satisfying mech-based gameplay for over two decades. In fact, Hidetaka Miyazaki started his career working on the series.
The latest entry, Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, released in August 2023 to widespread critical acclaim and strong sales. While fans eagerly await news of a potential sequel, FromSoftware has teased its future plans for the franchise, but it may take quite long for them to materialize.

We’ve known that Shadow the Hedgehog would be appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for some time but didn’t know who would be voicing the character… until now. First reported by John Campea and confirmed by THR, Shadow the Hedgehog will be voiced by none other than Keanu Reeves.
The audience at CinemaCon got a glimpse of Shadow during Paramount’s panel, during which a first-look trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was screened. The character first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2 as a dark version of Sonic who does whatever it takes to achieve his goals. The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has included some unexpected voice actors, such as Idris Elba as Knuckles, so it should be fun to see what Keanu Reeves does with Shadow.

Whereas his last project “Happy Times”, a blend of comedy and tragedy, garnered favorable reviews but to this day remains one of the director's smaller features, Zhang Yimou's next movie, the wuxia drama “Hero” marked a huge success for its director, both critically and commercially. Even today, “Hero” is one of the fan favorites among the many films by Zhang, and together with such features as “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” started a renaissance of the genre, to which the Chinese filmmaker has contributed many other stories, albeit with lesser success. In the 2002 film he tells the story of the founding of China's first dynasty, which resulted in the unification of the country after seven warring states had fought for many years to rule it entirely. Apart from being visually stunning, even by today's standards, “Hero” is a timeless story about the passions of men and how they can manipulate...

I can’t say it was difficult finding nine posters to talk about this month––most new April releases were given the bad Photoshop treatment. Some, like Cash Out, scream Dtv. Some, like Arcadian, try their best to at least make the lighting and coloring look real. Some go the collage route, e.g. The Long Game. And then there are those like Blood for Dust where the actors resemble flat cutouts and their heads bobbling balloons pasted on top.
I’ll never understand a studio’s desire to go that route when a simple film still with effective typography can garner attention for its beauty rather than its superficiality, but that mindset doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon. Thankfully there are still those who get it––those who commission posters as an art form and a marketing tool. You can have both.

There’s nothing more amazing than when a Pokémon trainer catches a legendary Pokémon. The days and hours of planning to join raids with your team and take down a Legendary or Mega beast together… It all pays off.
But what if Niantic gave us such an insane spawn in the wild? Well, they won’t. They’ll probably mask it as a Ditto or Zorua. And to rookies, catching either of these might be exciting till they learn they’re “not all that.” Sure, the catch may knock off some research tasks, but in the long run these Pokémon only serve mostly to get a Pokédex entry, and maybe occasionally thrown into a PvP battle for some low-tier rewards. But then again, that might be just a Zoroark and not a Ditto.

FromSoftware has been creating masterpiece after masterpiece ever since their first soulslike Demon Souls, was launched. Even though their games are similar at heart, they are different in just the right places. Players get to explore new worlds, use new kinds of weapons, and fight new kinds of harder bosses. Each one of these things was present in the Elden Ring.
As vibrant as these games are, their fanbase is not half bad either. It consists of people fighting one of the hardest bosses around 6000–7000 times, and there are even people who would play these games without getting hit even once. And director Hideteka Miyazaki has no issues, as he wants fans to continue having fun with the game.

Juan Piquer Simón’s exploitation slasher Pieces (1982) has a bonkers reputation that precedes it, delivering one of horror’s most entertaining audience experiences of all time. The tagline, “It’s exactly what you think it is!” only scratches the surface of the weirdness within. Sure, you get exactly what you expect in terms of gore in this tale of a jigsaw puzzle-obsessed killer with a chainsaw, but the execution is so over the top there’s nothing that really prepares you for the unique brand of madness.
Simon was initially approached to helm a sequel to Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left, but passed because the script he was offered seemed too boring. Then he was offered a 30-page treatment for Pieces, then titled Jigsaw, intended at the time to be a made-for-tv movie. It was so insane that not only was he intrigued, he was determined to make the script believable.

Netflix Metrics The Glory
Data dump: Since its inception — and especially since it became an original content player — Netflix has wrestled with releasing viewing data publicly. This week, its improving levels of transparency reached new heights with the release of What We Watched, a global report on 18,000+ titles from its library (equating to 99% of its catalog) covering the first six months of 2023. Data transparency was one of the key issues in the WGA and SAG-AFTRA contract negotiations, and while these new semi-annual reports aren’t the full picture, they provide insight deeper than anything released before. Katie Campione’s extensive analysis, on everything from data to the timing of the release, is well worth a read here.

Video game adaptations are all the rage. Together with anime, video games are the new gold rush for adaptations. Gone are the days when they were considered an instant failure; whether it's "Arcane," "Castlevania" or "The Last of Us," adaptations of video games are garnering critical acclaim and high viewership. On the film front, the "Sonic the Hedgehog" movies and the recent "Super Mario Bros. Movie" showed video game adaptations could also make money. Like, a lot of it.
Adapted from the iconic Sega video games of the same name, "Sonic the Hedgehog" focuses on the titular Sonic (Ben Schwartz) as he teams up with a small-town human sheriff (James Marsden) for a fun road trip that ends in a confrontation with the diabolical scientist Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Endings of shows usually demand another season when certain characters could come back together, an ominous plot point gets left open or the story lends itself to more world-building. Apple TV+’s “Strange Planet” adaptation of Nathan W. Pyle’s webcomic contains all three.
Season 1 ended with a literal cliffhanger.
The owner of cliffside diner Careful Now (Lori Tan Chinn) accidentally blows a hole near the restaurant with fireworks. It’s up to the Careful Now manager (Hannah Einbinder) and their new love interest, the regular customer (Danny Pudi), to find a solution to the thick fog that spews from the hole. The fog obscures the eclipse that populace celebrates on Double Shadow Day.
At the end of the day, the hole is filled by flipfloppers (pancakes) and Double Shadow Day is seemingly saved. But when the owner begins eating the pancakes, the fate of “Strange Planet” inhabitants is left uncertain.

CAA China has teamed up with the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society to unveil a joint initiative that will foster Chinese-language genre film projects.
The Hgc initiative will operate an open call for projects from Monday until the end of October. Five successful projects will be selected and presented at next year’s FilMart rights market and Haf project matching event.
As part of the program, “CAA China will fund $20,000 cash awards to each of two handpicked projects to support their development, with customized guidance from mentors.” CAA China may also choose to board the winning projects later by entering into script development agreements.
“We are witnessing the rise of a new generation of Chinese filmmakers who are the backbone of Chinese cinema,” said Mary Gu, CEO of CAA China. “By collaborating with Hkiff Society, our aim is to discover and support young filmmakers with industry awareness and mainstream expression.
