James Gunn announced that Feb. 29 marked the start of filming on his new “Superman” movie, which will kick off the rebooted DC Universe under the supervision of him and his DC Studios co-boss Peter Safran. Gunn also revealed that his movie, which had been titled “Superman: Legacy,” is now simply called “Superman.”
“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on Superman today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,” Gunn wrote in a caption to a photo of what appears to be a close-up of his version of the Superman costume.
“When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film ‘Superman: Legacy.’ By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was Superman,” he added. “Making our way to you July 2025.”

If you needed confirmation that James Gunn is getting ever closer to shooting Superman: Legacy, look no further than a new picture posted by the filmmaker (and DC Studios co-chief) of him and his cast assembled in Atlanta for a table read. Take a look:
Standing with the writer/director as well as producer Peter Safran (who co-oversees the DC movie arm of Warner Bros. with him) are David Corenswet (Clark Kent/Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardener), Isabela Mercad (Hawkgirl), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Terence Rosemore (Otis), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher) and María Gabriela de Faría (Angela Spica/The Engineer). Not pictured? Sean Gunn, who is playing Maxwell Lord. And – assuming the Gunn regular is actually going to be in the film – Michael Rooker, possibly just off to the side, wondering why he was asked to get the coffee.

Blitz Bazawule could care less about The Color Purple’s recent award nominations. The film’s director isn’t worried about the movie-musical’s Best Picture snub at the Golden Globe or wowed by the musical’s five Critics Choice nominations and three mentions on the Oscars’ shortlist for its music. He understands the significance of such accolades, but says he prefers to focus on how viewers will receive the Broadway musical adaptation.
“I honestly do not pay attention to any of it,” Bazawule tells Rolling Stone, the day the Critics Choice nominations were announced.

When you watch a movie like "The Color Purple," it's almost more difficult to criticize because of how well-meaning it is, and how good its intentions are. The story of the Black woman Celie as she grows up in the still extremely harsh and racist American South in the 1900s started as an Alice Walker novel before being adapted for the big screen by Steven Spielberg in 1985, eventually leading to a Broadway musical that's now being dramatized all over again on the big screen for a Christmas Day release. It's not that this story is new, per se, though a new generation may yet be discovering it through its musical version as opposed to Spielberg's '80s-era take. The concepts and ideas at the core of this story remain arresting, vital, and heartbreaking, but the way those concepts are executed in this big, sometimes splashy and sometimes grim musical are messy at best,...

For movie and television lovers operating on a tight budget, the monthly hit you take when your subscriptions to *deep breath* Prime Video, Netflix, Max, Disney+, Hulu, Apple TV+, Paramount+, Peacock, The Criterion Channel, Shudder, and others sure does, to quote M. Emmett Walsh's machine shop ear-bender from "Raising Arizona," take a bite. It's especially frustrating because each streaming service boasts at least a handful of excellent series that, once they get their hooks in, keep you clamoring for more. And if you're any kind of sports fan, you're probably still a cable/satellite subscriber or forking over $80 a month for a service like Fubo or YouTube TV.
And when you see Netflix and Disney+ hiking their prices by up to three dollars a month, you might have some hard decisions to make.
Streaming companies have been hearing your gripes about rising subscription prices, and over the last year or so,...

It’s hard to turn down Oprah Winfrey.
But that’s exactly what Fantasia Barrino did when the original “Color Purple” star approached her in 2021 to play Celie, an abused and uneducated Southern Black woman at the turn of the 20th century, in a big-screen musical reimagining of the classic film and Alice Walker’s novel.
Sixteen years ago, when she was in her early 20s, Barrino had played the role on Broadway, but it had been a traumatic rather than triumphant experience. “My life was in shambles,” Barrino, now 39, says, explaining how draining it was to portray Celie’s harrowing journey for eight shows a week. “I carried her every day, all day, and I didn’t like that feeling.”
When her run ended nine months later, she swore she’d never play the role again.
It was director Blitz Bazawule who changed Barrino’s mind about doing the film.

Exclusive: Filming on Beatles manager movie Midas Man did not restart last month as planned.
The plan was for filming to recommence in late November but the restart has been pushed to late January as new director Sara Sugarman gets acclimatized and the production has a planned pause over Christmas. The film’s original director Jonas Akerlund left the project in mid-November. Some of the original crew also left.
The independent movie will have had a three-month break from filming by the time cameras roll again and multiple people working on the film have now expressed concern to us about the project’s funding. We understand the feature has not been bonded.
However, the production tells us there are no funding or scheduling issues: “There is no delay. Midas Man filming remains very much on schedule to complete the movie. The new production team is now on board. U.S.

An arthouse-orientated Berlin line-up could ultimately reveal some pleasant surprises.
“Apprehension” was the word used by artistic director Carlo Chatrian to describe the mood of the films at the Berlinale 2021. Given the precarious state of the world this pandemic midwinter, that’s possibly the best we could expect as he announced the titles under the gaze of the festival’s stern, bespectacled black bear..
But there was a sense of resilience as well. Chatrian and his co-chief, the festival’s managing director Mariette Rissenbeek, have responded to lockdown constraints with their second selection planted firmly in the European arthouse. It...

Marvel Studios are reportedly developing a live-action adaptation of Marvel Comics "The Illuminati", debuting in Marvel's "New Avengers" #7 (July 2005) by Brian Michael Bendis and Steve McNiven, conceived as a covert crime-fighting 'think-tank' originally staffed by 'Mister Fantastic', 'Iron Man', 'Professor X', 'Doctor Strange', 'Black Bolt' and 'Namor':
"...'The Illuminati' met in secret, sharing information and strategy, operating relatively successfully...
"...despite their unique traits and considerable differences every way.
"'Namor' was king of the highly advanced underwater civilization of 'Atlantis', as well as a powerful mutant; 'Doctor Strange' was the 'Sorcerer Supreme of Earth', representing mystics and outsider heroes...
"...Reed Richards' was the leader of the well-respected 'Fantastic Four', as well as one of the world's foremost scientists and a superhuman.

This week I will be revisiting all the ‘Character Spotlights’ from the year and seeing which ones of any have gone up in value. Firstly I think it is best that I outline the process I go through in deciding on which character to put under the spotlight and then how I acquire my valuations. I will be first to admit that the first year of the ‘Character Spotlights’ has been a rough and ready process. It could really do with some work to tidy it up for 2020. Firstly I have to admit to a mistake from myself, its nothing major but when I debuted ‘Character Spotlight’ in week 14 of eBuying Comics I refered to a 9.8 as Nm as opposed to Nm/M. Like I said nothing major, just the small case of a missed slash and a capital M! Rather than admit to my mistake I just stuck with...

Varun Tej, who made his acting debut as a child artiste in the Nagendra Babu starrer Hands Up!, debuted as hero in Mukunda in 2014. He went on to act in films such as Kanche, Loafer and Mister. His last two film releases Fidaa and Tholi Prema turned out to be big hits at the box office and the young star is hoping to score a perfect hat-trick with the success of F2.
