Paris, Hong Kong and L.A-based sales company All Rights Entertainment has picked up worldwide rights for “The Defects,” a 3D animated sci-fi comedy that drew significant buzz as this year’s Cartoon Movie, which ran from March 5 – 7 in Bordeaux.
Directed by Federico Milella (“The Fairy Princess & the Unicorn”) and produced by Luxembourg-based Fabrique d’Images, the family adventure will enter production later this year with budget of €10 million ($10.9 million) with an intended 2027 delivery date.
France’s Fantabulous and Belgium’s Freaks Factory will co-produce, while Belgian artist Stéphane Halleux – whose steampunk influence shaped the Oscar winning short “Mr. Hublot” – will oversee the film’s look and feel.
Described as kind of “Blade Runner” given a family friendly polish, “The Defects” takes place in a retro-futuristic suburbia where faulty humans are replaced by perfect robotic clones. When 12-year-old tech-head Hope falls in with a gang of likeminded outcasts, the misfit...

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

Fairies, unicorns and dragons are a recipe for success in any child-friendly film. Nothing quite captures the imagination of the younger viewer than these mythical beings being brought to life on screen. Directors Aina Järvine and Federico Milella’s animated fantasy The Fairy Princess and the Unicorn delivers as its title suggests in a simple, sweet and innocent way, complete with cute animals that would not look out of place accompanying any Disney hero(ine).
The diverse fairyland of Bayala and its magic is under threat from a decay called ‘the wilt’, after wicked shadow fairy leader Ophira (voiced by Liza Ortiz) stole all the dragons’ eggs that supply its magic. Ophira also kidnapped sun fairy Princess Surah (voiced by Madison Mullahey) as a child, raising her with her shadow fairy cousin Princess Nuray (voiced by Rebecca Becker) and slowly mutating her sun wings into shadow ones, so that she...

Historical romance, literary adaptations, arthouse drama, star-studded comedies, children’s pics, animated fare and a high-profile documentary are among the many German films and co-productions on offer at this year’s Cannes Film Market.
Unspooling as part of the festival are Wim Wenders’ “Pope Francis: A Man of His Word,” repped by Focus Features and bowing in Special Screenings; “In My Room,” Ulrich Koehler’s story of a man who suddenly realizes everyone around him has disappeared, which world premieres in Un Certain Regard; and, in Intl. Critics’ Week sidebar, Anja Kofmel’s Swiss co-production “Chris the Swiss,” a partially animated documentary from Urban Distribution that investigates the mysterious death of a young Swiss journalist during the Yugoslav wars.
On the market side, one historical niche that is proving particularly successful is that of the turn-of-the-century artist.
