One of this year’s coolest things has unquestionably been Neill Blomkamp’s new independent venture Oats Studios, which has given rise to crazy shorts like Rakka, Firebase, and my personal favorite, Zygote. Without any studio interference, Blomkamp has proven that he’s one of the most original and visionary filmmakers working today. Today, Blomkamp and Oats Studios just […]...

Neill Blomkamp (District 9) has completed a number of shorts as of late. Out of his new Vancouver based studio, Blomkamp has delivered: "The Escape," "Rakka," "Firebase," and now "Zygote." "Zygote" stars Jose Pablo Cantillo and Dakota Fanning. Characters are trying to survive on a remote base, with a deadly creature. The short film is visually stunning. And, everyone with a set of eyeballs should view it. The entire short, from Oats Studios, is hosted here. The story involves an Arctic mine. Two survivors fight for their lives, while evading a "new kind of terror!" Horror fans can see that terror, in the short below. It is made of several victims. Their eyeballs and arms have been amalgamated, in order to absorb even more survivors. Showing the continuing development of Computer Generated Imagery, the monster looks unusually life-like. Viewers should turn down the lights, while turning up the volume, to fully enjoy "Zygote.

Director Neill Blomkamp is going to push the edge on storytelling with amazing visual effects with his experimental short films.
With his Vancouver-based Oats Studios in its infancy stage, the studio has launched a series of initial short films to let the online audience give feedback and critique the company’s work. Online audiences can provide feedback through YouTube, Steam and even on Twitter. It will help Blomkamp and Oats Studios to determine the production of future filmmaking.
Zygote has been released this week which stars Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds) and Jose Pablo Cantillo (Taken). The short film follows two survivors at an arctic mining station trying to survive against this alien/zombie-like creature made from the human limbs. The feel of the short film is like a cross between The Thing and Alien.
It follows previously short films that were released earlier this summer with Rakka, Firebase,...

Neill Blomkamp wasn’t kidding about Oats Studios. After releasing the short alien thriller “Rakka” starring Sigourney Weaver and the alternate-history Vietnam War drama “Firebase” last month, the “District 9” director has just premiered “Zygote.” Dakota Fanning stars in the 23-minute sci-fi short, another in-house production from his new studio based in Vancouver. Watch below.

According to a Verge interview, “Zygote” was born of a simple idea Blomkamp had while en route from Vancouver to Toronto on a plane: “a monster made out of men.” That’s what Fanning has to contend with in his “The Thing”–inflected short, which carries a brief but evocative premise: “Stranded in an Arctic mine, two lone survivors are forced to fight for their lives, evading and hiding from a new kind of terror.”

Neill Blomkamp’s production company, Oats Studios has released their third short film in the last month, “Zygote.” The new film is yet another deviation from what has come before, with “Rakka” and “Firebase.” It’s clear that with each film in Oats Studios Volume 1, Blomkamp and company are making sure they are giving audiences a wide variety of content.

About a month ago, Neill Blomkamp released the first entry in his new Oats Studios short film initiative, and while it had a lot of gross crocodile monsters and an appearance from Sigourney Weaver, it had a distinct lack of District 9 and Chappie star Sharlto Copley. That’s not the case for Serengeti, one of Blomkamp’s new shorts, which actually features Copley as God.
Much shorter (and a bit less graphic) than Weaver’s Rakka or the Vietnam-set Firebase, Serengeti focuses on God as a slightly disinterested overlord who treats his subjects like annoying Sims characters and leaves most of the actual work to his assistant. You can see the full short below:
Blomkamp’s Oats videos are free on YouTube, but you can pay for extra content on Steam.

Neill Blomkamp has released his third short film from his Oats Studios project. It's called God: Serengeti and it stars Sharlto Copley (District 9, Elysium, Chappie) in the role of God. It's more of a comedic type story about God and his servant playing with the early inhabitants of Earth. This is the shortest film in the series that has been released so far as it runs almost 4-minutes long. It's a great short that I think you'll enjoy!
If you haven't seen the first two short film makes sure to check them out! There's Rakka, which you can watch here and Firebase, which you can watch here. I've been loving these shorts! There's a new one called Zygote, which is set to arrive on July 12th, so stary tuned for that!

'Firebase' is the second short film by Neill Blomkamp from his experimental film venture, Oats Studios.
Set during the Vietnam war, Firebase follows American soldier Hines through an ever deepening web of science fiction madness. The fabric of space-time is literally beginning to bend around him.
You can watch the first short film Rakka here!
Also be sure to check out 'Cooking With Bill'...

What… the… hell. Just last week, I praised the unbridled creativity that Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Chappie) has been bringing to the table with new venture Oats Studios. The Sigourney Weaver-starring Rakka and last week’s Firebase were both visionary slices of sci-fi insanity that show what Blomkamp is capable of without studio involvement, and I’m […]...

Remember all of two weeks ago when Neill Blomkamp (“District 9,” “Elysium,” “Chappie”) and his newly-founded Oats Studios debuted his dystopic short film “Rakka” starring Sigourney Weaver? If not, you should check that out here. It shouldn’t take long, what with “Rakka’s” just-over-twenty-minute runtime, so I’ll wait.
Okay, now that we are all up to speed, there is something even newer from Blomkamp’s camp that you ought to give a look: “Firebase.”
“Firebase” is another short film that fits firmly within Blomkamp’s wheelhouse of action-packed science fiction.

Ready for more? Neill Blomkamp's experimental sci-fi filmmaking collective Oats Studios has premiered their second short film titled Firebase, set during the Vietnam War. This ultra violent action film is kind of a mix between Predator and Apocalypse Now, with some gnarly surprises in store for those brave enough to venture into the jungle. A few weeks ago, we featured the first film Rakka (about lizard-like aliens enslaving humanity). We also posted an extensive interview with Blomkamp discussing his ideas behind Oats Studios and what they're trying to pull off. So far these two shorts have been awesome, playing with crazy original ideas that no studio would probably greenlight. You can watch the entire film below - and damn is it wicked. Available direct from YouTube or you can buy/download the full package of assets and files from the short film on Steam here. There's no official description for Firebase,...

Set in Vietnam, Neill Blomkamp's Firebase takes in fleshy monsters, guns and gallons of gore. You have been warned...
Over the past few weeks, we've heard quite a bit about Oats Studios - director Neill Blomkamp's independent studio dedicated to making experimental short films. We've already seen Rakka, a 20-minute invasion story starring Sigourney Weaver and a horde of lizard-like, telekinetic alien monsters.

Next comes Firebase - a piece even gorier and more grotesque than the last. It's set in the Vietnam War, and introduces a terrifying being dubbed the River God, which is capable of inflicting all kinds of horrors on feeble human bodies. Like Rakka, Firebase could form the basis of a feature film further down the line - though as Blomkamp says, he'll be partly basing what happens...
