Featuristic Films has unveiled an exclusive first look at the feature documentary “Afghanistan.” It follows filmmaker James Glancy, a former British Royal Marine Commando who was decorated in 2012 for his actions in combat, as he returns to Afghanistan with a small, handpicked team to help him answer the question that has haunted him over the past decade: Was it worth it?
Dramatically, mid-way through the shoot, President Joe Biden announced that the U.S. would be pulling troops out by 9/11, starting a Taliban offensive that has led to the dramatic fall this week of the Afghan government, amidst chaotic evacuation scenes in Kabul as American forces withdraw.
The documentary offers unprecedented access to the story of the Afghan war and what has happened to the Afghan people, Featuristic Films said, told firstly through the personal journey of Glancy, his memories from fighting in Afghanistan, stories from his father, who lived...

When it came to assembling the brand sponsors for Disney’s Cruella, it wasn’t about the dogs in the 101 Dalmatians live-action spinoff, or the swanky Panther De Ville car she drove in the 1990s Glenn Close movies, rather the glitz which the Emma Stone and Emma Thompson characters are all about.
While recent brand campaigns for Disney+’s season 2 of The Mandalorian and the hybrid theatrical release of Raya and the Last Dragon spoke mostly to home consumers, Cruella leans toward a female audience who wants to get out of the house for a stunning night on the town after a year-plus of lockdown. In addition, the Cruella promo partner campaign is arguably Disney’s most chic lineup of advertisers in recent years with high-end luxury names as Louis Vuitton, De Beers jewelry, Tom Davies eyewear and more.

Arri Media Intl. has signed a deal with Faktura Film to handle the international sales for the Marxist vampire comedy “Bloodsuckers.” The film has been selected to world premiere in the Berlin Film Festival’s Encounters section, which aims to “foster aesthetically and structurally daring works from independent, innovative filmmakers.” Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer.
Arri Media Intl. will present the film, which was written and directed by Julian Radlmaier, to buyers at the European Film Market, which runs March 1-5.
“Bloodsuckers,” which is set in 1928, centers on a penniless Soviet refugee, who falls in love with an eccentric young vampiress, played by Lilith Stangenberg (“Wild”), spending the summer at the seaside with her awkward servant. The script won the Golden Lola for Best Unfilmed Screenplay during the 2019 Berlinale, and was praised by the jury for being “extravagant, bizarre, and hilarious.”

Hello, dear readers! We’ve made it through another month, which means we have a new batch of horror, sci-fi and even a handful “genre adjacent” films heading to VOD and digital platforms in the coming weeks. Some of the highlights for August’s digital debuts include La Llorona on Shudder (August 6th), Sputnik (August 14th), Open 24 Hours (August 18th), Random Acts of Violence (hits Shudder on August 20th), The Pale Door (August 21st), and Centigrade and Rogue both arrive on August 28th.
It’s also worth noting that one of my favorite documentaries of 2020, You Cannot Kill David Arquette, is slated for release sometime in late August, but an official date hasn’t been revealed just yet.
The Sonata (Screen Media) – Exclusively on Crackle August 1st

To kick off this brand new month of home media releases, March isn’t living up to its reputation of coming “in like a lion,” as we only have eight different titles headed to Blu-ray and DVD this week. Fans of the Nightmare series should definitely check out the brilliant documentary Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street, which chronicles Mark Patton’s journey through his career pre- and post-noes 2. Rlje Films is releasing the Shudder Exclusive film, The Furies, onto DVD this Tuesday, and Screen Media is cueing up The Sonata for genre fans, which features a performance from the late, great Rutger Hauer.
Other titles coming home on March 3rd include A Wakefield Project, Dead Sound, Don’t Let Them In, I Am Fear, and Primrose Lane.

Restoration wit William Congreve opined that music had charms to soothe the savage breast, but in “The Sonata,” it has power to summon the savage beast — you know, the one usually depicted with horns, tail, and a pitchfork. This handsome horror meller set primarily in France benefits considerably from location shooting in cheaper, but picturesque Latvia. It’s Looks 10, Personality 4, however, as director Andrew Desmond and collaborator Arthur Morin’s screenplay doesn’t quite provide enough incident to properly milk its own premise, making for a supernatural thriller that ends just as it’s beginning to work up a sweat.

Sebastien Raybaud’s production, finance and sales house Anton has picked up worldwide sales rights to music documentary “Laurent Garnier: Off the Record,” and is presenting the project to buyers at the American Film Market.
The documentary looks at the life of one of the godfathers of house music, the pioneering DJ Laurent Garnier, from his emergence on the music scene in the 1980s to the present day, and follows him on his 2018-2019 global tour.
The film, currently in post-production, is directed by Gabin Rivoire (“Violence With Benefits”), with whom Garnier collaborates on the Yeah! Festival. Featuristic Films’ Julien Loeffler produced the project with associate producers James Kermack and Fabrice Smadja.
Anton’s Charlotte van Weede and Juliette Fourniez will handle U.S. and international sales.
Raybaud said: “The impact that electronic music has had on millions of people throughout the world is remarkable. Laurent Garnier has been one of its biggest ambassadors.

Arri Media International has acquired international distribution rights to Andrei Konchalovsky’s Michelangelo biopic “Il Peccato” (“Sin”), which will have its world premiere as a Special Closing Event at the 14th Rome Film Festival (Oct. 17-27).
Written by Konchalovsky and Elena Kiseleva, the film is set in Florence in the 16th century and follows Michelangelo through “the agonies and ecstasy of his own creative genius, as two rival noble factions compete for his loyalty,” according to Arri.
Although widely considered a genius by his contemporaries, Michelangelo, played by Alberto Testone (“Suburra”), is reduced to poverty and depleted by his struggle to finish the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. When his commissioner and head of the Della Rovere nobility Pope Julius II dies, Michelangelo becomes obsessed with sourcing the finest marble to complete his tomb.

Screen Media has picked up all North American rights to “The Sonata,” a thriller that features one of the late actor Rutger Hauer’s final film roles.

Screening at this year's Frightfest, Andrew Desmond's handsome occult thriller The Sonata made quite an impression. It's the story of young violinist Rose (played by Freya Tingley) who learns that her estranged father, a famous composer who spent his later years in obscurity, has passed away, leaving her his mansion in France. Visiting with the intention of selling the property, she discovers that that's not all he's left her - there's a piece of music there, apparently waiting for her, which just might be a work of genius. To decipher it, however, she has to follow a series of clues which gradually lead her - and her manager Charles - into very dark places. It's a remarkably polished feature début and I asked Andrew what led him to take on something so ambitious in the first place.

Andrew Desmond is a director we've been keeping a close eye on in these pages for some time now. His short film work has been striking and we were pleased to share the first images from his debut feature, The Sonata, almost exactly a year ago. And now the film has wrapped up and we're very excited to share the first teaser. A young violinist unravels her long lost father’s past, triggering dark forces that reach beyond her imagination… Freya Tingley, Simon Akbarian, James Faulkner and Rutger Hauer star in the classically styled - and classical music oriented - horror picture. Take a look at the first teaser below!...

Here’s some good-looking first footage I can reveal of mystery-horror The Sonata, starring Freya Tingley (Hemlock Grove), Simon Akbarian (Casino Royale), James Faulkner (Atomic Blonde) and Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner).
The completed film, which is set in London and France, follows young virtuoso violinist Rose (Tingley). After the death of her estranged but famous composer father (Hauer), she inherits the old mansion in which he lived. There, she discovers her father’s final work: a mysterious music score marked with strange symbols. With the help of Charles (Abkarian), her agent and manager, she deciphers the symbols and, little by little, starts to unlock secrets concerning her father’s past, setting in motion the mechanisms of a plan imagined on the day she was born.

Germany’s leading sales companies have descended on the American Film Market with a wide range of titles that span horror and historical fare to arthouse, animation and family pics.
Supernatural thrillers look to be especially prevalent this year, with such chilling titles as “The Sonata,” “Hanna’s Homecoming” and “Party Hard, Die Young” — all from Arri Media Intl.
Directed by Andrew Desmond and starring Freya Tingley, Simon Abkarian and Rutger Hauer, “The Sonata” follows a young violinist who inadvertently triggers dark forces after discovering a mysterious music score composed by her late father. The film world premiered at Afm.
Esther Bialas’ “Hanna’s Homecoming,” likewise having its market premiere, centers on a teen girl who is shunned in her village because her mother was widely believed to be a witch and responsible for the deaths of several men. The pic premiered in October at the Hof Film Festival.

Freya Tingley in ‘The Sonata.’
Freya Tingley will play the lead in first-time Us director Ali Presley Paras’ mystery-thriller Year of the Detectives, which starts shooting in Los Angeles this month.
The Aussie actor describes her character Nic O’Connell, a recently discharged Army veteran, as “like a grenade with the pin pulled: she’s tomboyish, tough and not afraid of a fight.”
O’Connell jointly inherits her grandfather’s private detective agency in the heart of Chinatown. She must set aside her differences with her co-inheritor (True Grit’s Paul Rae) to solve the mystery of her grandparents’ deaths as bodies pile up.
Chris Johnson wrote the script and the producer is Silversmith Pictures’ Joe Smith. A longtime assistant cameraman, Paras has directed several shorts including Quad, which is available on Hulu as part of the Fun Size Horror anthology.

It was back in 2014 that we first caught sight of director Andrew Desmond. The occassion at the time was the trailer for his fantastic scifi short film Entity - which you can see here - and we knew right away that Desmond was a director of prodigious visual talent. Jump forward a couple years and Desmond turned up in the co-production market world pitching his would-be debut feature The Sonata, a supernatural thriller revolving around a young classical music prodigy. And it's not just a would-be debut any more ... The Sonata is now in production and we're very happy to share the first images from the shoot! Freya Tingley, Simon Akbarian, James Faulkner and Rutger Hauer star and clearly Desmond has lost none...
