How the genius cult kills talent and breaks hearts
denis-2379118 February 2020
Excellent cinematography. Very well played by the main actress. A very touching portrait of a broken woman's broken relationship with her son, her life, herself. Very well written to fit a lifetime's key conflict into one single day, one single evening, one single concert.

Eloquent

The writing, and the central performance by Corinna Harfouch combine to make this film work. The writing has the qualities of an excellent short story; it builds through character and opens up the themes to the piece by episodes which are proportionate and cohere.

Carrying the film, Harfouch, delivers a nuanced and strong performance in which she seems to have multiple ways to convey pain and regret, disappointment and disillusion. In some key scenes she pivots to pride, and even arrogance, all of which convey the turmoil in the character.

The story is familiar enough and done in a style that is not hackneyed, using other elements, in locations and minor characters, to present the loneliness and failure of Harfouch's character.

An engaging film that is worth seeing again.

Gerster keeps his high level for the most part
Horst_In_Translation18 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
"Lara" is a German movie from 2019 that runs for slightly under 100 minutes and was directed by Jan-Ole Gerster. The latter had a lot of success with his film "Oh Boy" in the early 2010s and seven years later, he released his new movie. Quite a long time, especially taking into account that this time he was not in charge of the script the way he was with "Oh Boy". Clearly he is not the most prolific filmmaker, at least at this point, but who knows. Maybe this is going to change at some point. He is still relatively young. The screenplay is by Slovenian Blaz Kutin and I am a bit surprised how he ended up working for this movie. The reason may be partially that this film was supposed to take place in Slovenia initially. That is what I found out during a brief Q&A as both the director and the writer were present for tonight's screening. Sadly, lead actress Harfouch, who physically and in terms of mannerisms reminds me more and more of French actress Isabelle Huppert, was not. It was a bit of a special screening as this is one of the first times a film is shown again on a big screen after the coronavirus pandemic began here in my city. I am glad movies are back, even if there are still many restrictions. But let's not get distracted by that and instead focus on the film. I think I could see a bit this is a Gerster film again because there are parallels to "Oh Boy", which makes me wonder if, to some extent, he also worked on the screenplay. For example, we have one character at the very center of the story and she is in pretty much every scene here. We see her interactions with people close to her and not so close to her and the running gag in "Oh Boy" was the coffee reference (that was even included in the international title) and here it is the central character trying to give tickets for the show to everybody. Okay, maybe I am grasping a bit for straws. I am not sure. But it felt this way to me. Of course, there are also crucial differences like the age and gender of the main character and also that this one here is not in black-and-white. It does play in Berlin though again and not in Slovenia as initially planned. This movie was nominated for a German Film Award in the biggest category (Best Picture), but the big surprise, maybe the biggest from all nominees, was that lead actress Harfouch did not get a nomination. She scored a really solid deal of awards recognition on other awards shows though. The biggest supporting player, maybe not even in terms of screen time, but in terms of how much he is at the center of the story, is Harfouch's character's son and he is played by Tom Schilling. Definitely not a coincidence as Schilling was the unanimous lead in "Oh Boy".

But now I will elaborate a bit on this film here. Looking at how Harfouch's character deals with conflicts and how she treats other people, it becomes clear really quickly that she is far from a likable person. If the ways in which her mother and piano teacher treated her in the past (that clearly turned her into who she became) are enough of an apology to justify the her comments about a boy's parents, her breaking the violin and her telling the guy who is interested in her to turn up the volume when he is trying to have a conversation is up to you to decide. She is clearly also a victim, not just a perpretator. And apparently, she is also not good with social situations at all because if she was, then she would not talked to her son like that and created all these doubts in his mind. It's never about her being wrong - we hear on several occasions that other characters agree that the first half of the concert was superior to the second - it is all about her being understanding and empathic. But the lack of empathy is something she clearly received from her mother. Also her mother likes to emphasize how her son prefers her (i.e. the grandmother) over Harfouch's character and the cake scene and how the grandmother reacted there showed very well that she has no love left for her daughter really. The idea and also the fact that it was a diet cake was really a nice gesture, but Harfouch's character gets insulted for it even. Of course, the slapping was not a justified response, but the emotional ice blocks Lara got thrown at her somehow created a scenario of self-defence. You could see that the old woman never appreciated her daughter's potential talent because this music (perhaps the genre) was nothing that impressed her at all. The grandmother is played by Gudrun Ritter and she is doing a good job with her limited screen time just like everybody else. Gerster's previous success made sure he has many actors at his disposal here who almost never miss the mark. Be it Harfouch, Schilling, Dragus, Emde, Ritter, Hasanovic or Bock and also several others indeed. Kempter and von Bülow were wasted a bit and had almost no material at all to shine. Still Kempter's scene was at least somewhat interesting because it was closely connected to Lara's outfit that seemed so special that she could be the star of the night, but it never referenced again by anybody. On the contrary, people are applauding her about her coat instead. The idea of the window and Lara's (potential) suicide plans also gave an interesting framework to the movie. You never know though if she is just looking out of the window or really wants to end it all. Especially early on. At the end, she may not be happy either, but her former teacher's words about how he just anted to push her showed her that she got it all wrong and that there is no reason to verbally insult those she appreciates the most, especially if it is such a heavy burden on them the way it is with her son. Another tortured soul. So when she decides to play the piano herself eventually before the closing credits roll in, it is also in a way a depiction of her freeing herself from her inner demons. Through art. Not through suicide. It was a good ending i think. Just like it was a good film overall, some really interesting camera shots and angles as well. Gerster is definitely making his mark here and he seems pretty reliable. I am curious about his upcoming projects. I just wonder why Harfouch (at least here on imdb) is not first credit, but oh well. Just a minor thingey and if that is what I am criticizing, then there sure cannot be too much else wrong with this film. The definitely isn't. I cannot think of too much. Maybe that the really old male teacher suddenly remembering Lara very well again did not feel too realistic after he did not even know who she was in the first place. But maybe he just pretended that he did not remember. It is possible. He does not seem to be really open with the ways how he shows approval or even praise. Lara got that from him. I think this film is also popular enough that they will make subtitles (in addition to dubs), so no matter if you are German or not (or I should say "speak German"), this is a movie worth checking out. Ne hesitation for me in giving the outcome a thumbs-up. Decent creative achievement overall.

Great and different follow-up to Oh Boy.
Dev19997 November 2019
The first movie I ever saw at a film festival, albeit it that the Ludwigsburger Lichtspielliebe is a very very new and very very very small and adorable little film festival with only one screening room. But that counts and is all very well done, and the director and lead actor showed up after the film for a fairly lengthy discussion. Lara was one of my most anticipated movies of this year because I love the first film Jan-Ole Gerster did, Oh Boy. This one yet again tells a big story in a down to earth and believable form where the way characters act and speak tells you all you need to know about them, and then some. Yet again it's also about family and being in a bad place in life. Lara, different from his first film, is for a big part about passion and creativity, and it's beautifully directed and written, and of course the performances are great. I'm very happy it turned out so well and hope it won't take Gerster seven years again to put out a new film. I don't know what took him so long, maybe it was just about financing. Anyway, see this one if you can please, it's definitely worth a watch and so full of life, never boring, always being real, and you can tell they really cared about making this as good as it can be. This is a film everyone will be able to get something out of. Fittingly, at one point a character thinks to himself, does the world really need my music or has it been done already and is pointless. I can tell you Lara is thankfully anything but pointless.

Not Bad.

Imperfect mother's day, her heart has too many feelings but nowhere to vent. What you may see is only the creation of movies, but what you think of will be your original family.

A "perfect" movie ...
stef200029 August 2020
A movie about art and music, a movie about education, a movie about believing in yourself and the strength it needs to follow your dreams. Incredible acting, most intense emotions brought to the screen, a script that's both surprising and most of all thought provoking and superb direction, scene after scene really goes under your skin. A movie that will stay with you, very much unlike other movies that are already forgotten when you have left the cinema...

No surprises here. Very well done for what it is.

There are movies that stick with you long after you see them. This is one of those. That's not always a good thing, mind you. especially when it's a dark film. This is a dark film. However, it managed to be both entertaining and thoughtfully thought provoking...as good art should be. The other reviews discuss the subject matter, so I won't repeat. I would gently urge you to watch this movie and you will revel in the talented acting and slow purposeful direction. The choices we make in life are on full display here. Sometimes the bit players, as well as the leads, in our lives affect us profoundly and shape our direction. Can we learn and adjust our course or continue on in despair...? A very solid work.

One of the view movie that I really liked, breaking hearts and drama
momomojojo7 January 2022
Love how they dumb you straight into the situation Also, the strange behavior is nicely done not the classic way but innovative Can really feel the anger of her and unlimited, frustration to the world even tho she tries to fit in the world and politely handle it and if it does not work out she will force it. And she can get regret and feels the need to do something in return due to her behavior. Where she got her character from To unfold plot of the not only of her character, but her social network also (how she looks at other people and how they do it in return, reflecting of it) and the movie plot.

The son have gone through a lot but also the place of her mother. He wants her but also dislike how she is and shows in sadness. It is not that her opinion matters but her exciting matters to him.

Notice that when she is showing too much vulnerability, she feels too fragile and need upper hand by going in the offense, making the other party vulnerable.

You feel the desperation, the support for her son but not showing it and when the time is ticking by it is nice to see how it goes.

Avoiding situations It is strange that being nice to her is not the way to get her affection. She is clearly in need for acknowledgement. When she got, she is relief but also not satisfied enough.

How she make choices is really non conventional.

Really great camera work, especially in the concert moment and the changing room moment.

Acting is nicely done natural.

She mostly does not care about anything and now she sees what her action is doing to others by seeing it due to the thing she cares. Showing undoubt how much Love how the story is being told, and the plot unveiled Really great done, how everything has come together and that her action did matter and is not only destruction but also love and people are not evil.

Very great scene when son and mother after the concert. The interaction is just good done. It shows also finally he is spreading his wing and require his space.

The conversation in the brasserie is good done The flow of the movie is great, with many actions and scenes feeling the tension it is really the work of the actors, of course the great script and director.

The reflecting of her and her whole life in 1 conversation made her changed the perspective of the whole world and her life. So powerful look in the hallway to the restroom.

She knows she needs to move on. That small piece in her life, she thinks she was over it, was something that she did not digest well. An excuse to find, or just coincidence?

Confirming everything.

Oh Girl
kosmasp15 June 2021
It makes sense that the same person responsible for Oh Boy is responsible for this. Not because the movies are the same or similar in that sense, but that they are both good. And this follow up is quite something - this time around it is a woman who is front and center ... and boy is she flawed ... no pun intended.

So many really good performances - and I don't say that lightly when it comes to German movies. While I generally am "known" for being too nice when it comes to rating movies (in general, I can be harsh too), I am quite critical of German efforts and mostly am not convinced when it comes to performances in the German language ... that makes me even more excited when it comes to movie like this one here.

To say that Lara is a flawed human being ... a broken one and one that commits and makes many mistakes would be quite the understatement. But that is also what makes her and the movie so interesting ... very well done indeed ...

Slow but moving narrative Warning: Spoilers
The narrative is extremely slow, so I sped up the video in the excerpts where there was no dialogue. Despite that, I liked the plot that takes place in a single day, where nothing special happens. By the way, maybe that's what bothers a little about Blaz Kutin's script: the lack of explanations involving mother, son, husband and grandmother. It seemed that the son hated his mother, but at the end of his concert he dedicates his performance to his mother. What could have been a tedious movie, however, was not what I felt, as I never yawned and watched with enormous interest.

Projected Dreams
ricardojorgeramalho8 December 2022
A reflection on maturity and the balances it inevitably provokes, the choices, good or bad, that determine the unfolding of a life, the people who, for better or worse, influence them, the regrets, the disappointments and the projections of unfulfilled dreams in others, particularly in children.

The main message is positive, that only by taking risks can goals be achieved. The general tone, however, is dark, marked by the compunction of someone who proved incapable of taking the risk at the right moment and dragged revolt into her life and that of everyone around.

However, it is precisely this austerity and this degree of demand, which make her life so unbearable, that also built an image of respect and admiration in others, capable of instilling excellence and perfectionism around her.

Life is made of contradictions. The destruction of the dreams of some allows the construction and realization of the dreams of others.
