Madonna‘s “Express Yourself” was a bold new chapter for the Material Girl, as it changed her musical style and persona. The Queen of Pop said she included “extreme” images of herself in the music video. This caused controversy, and the “Like a Virgin” singer elaborated on what was going through her head when he made the clip.
Madonnas’ ‘Express Yourself’ music video is based on a classic movie
“Express Yourself” is an important milestone in Madonna’s career for two reasons. First, it was the “Holiday” singer‘s first feminist anthem. As time went on, feminism became a huge part of her image. Second, it was her most extravagant music video yet, with sets modeled on the epic science fiction film Metropolis. Even today, the special effects look impressive.

“Material Girl” by Madonna isn’t actually about being materialistic. The music video for the song makes that abundantly clear. Madonna wasn’t happy when people took the song the wrong way.
Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ led to an annoying nickname
Madonna broke into the mainstream with her self-titled album, which includes the hits “Holiday,” “Borderline,” and “Lucky Star.” Of course, this impressive trio of songs didn’t convince everyone that Madonna was here to stay. “In the beginning, I was called everything from a Disco Dolly to a one-hit wonder,” Madonna said in 1999. Everyone agreed that I was sexy, but no one would agree that I had any talent, which really irritated me.”
“Material Girl” was one of the hits from Madonna’s second album, Like a Virgin. It proved Madonna was no one-album wonder, but the Queen of Pop didn’t like when the press started calling her “the Material Girl.

Madonna‘s “Into the Groove” is one of the best dance songs of the 1980s if not all time. The Material Girl said that a certain ex-boyfriend of hers made the song work. She also revealed why she doesn’t like singing “Into the Groove.”
Madonna doesn’t like ‘Into the Groove’ and some of her other hits
“Into the Groove” encapsulates Madonna’s early catalog like few other songs. It’s a catchy slice of post-disco music that seems innocent enough at first glance. However, upon repeat listens, it’s clear that the tune might be a metaphor for risque behavior. It straddles the line between innocence and innuendo in a way that made Madonna’s first two albums (Madonna and Like a Virgin) irresistible.
During a 2009 interview with Rolling Stone, the Material Girl said she didn’t have much faith in “Into the Groove.” “I’ve never been...

Almost a decade since his debut feature The Here After premiered at Directors’ Fortnight, Swedish director Magnus von Horn is finally in Cannes Competition with the black-and-white period film The Girl with the Needle. Previously there was Sweat––the Polish-language jab at influencer culture––but when the festival was canceled on account of the pandemic, it got a “Cannes Selection” stamp rather than “Competition.” A silver lining that The Girl with the Needle is perhaps best-suited for a Palme d’Or head-to-head: it is surprising, stylish, and unabashedly brave.
Von Horn certainly knows what to aim for when bringing in two of the most exciting names in Scandinavian cinema today, Vic Carmen Sonne (Holiday) and Trine Dyrholm. Sonne plays Karoline, a factory seamstress who finds herself in a pickle; Dyrholm is Dagmar, the mysterious woman who offers help. Like one of those fiendish knots that tighten the more you squirm, director Magnus von Horn’s Cannes competitor The Girl With the Needle builds to a devastating climax, taut as piano wire.
Danish actress Vic Carmen Sonne (Holiday, Godland) offers an understated but multi-layered performance as Karoline, a vulnerable but resilient seamstress living in post-World War I/early-1920s Copenhagen, who is left high and dry when her wealthy lover (Joachim Fjelstrup) gets her knocked up but won’t marry her. That leaves Karoline with only two options: give herself a bathtub abortion with a knitting needle or have the baby and hand it over to Dagmar (Trine Dyrholm), a sinister candy-store owner who runs a backstreet adoption agency.
Shot digitally, in black and white and using a claustrophobic 3:2 ratio by rising cinematographer Michal Dymek (A Real Pain, Eo), the film has the haunted, eerily still poise of antique photographs,...

Swedish-Polish director Magnus von Horn’s dark period drama “The Girl With the Needle” will compete for the Palme d’Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Variety has been given exclusive access to a first-look clip from the film.
Written by von Horn and Line Langebek (“I’ll Come Running”), “The Girl With the Needle” is loosely based on the true story of Dagmar Overbye, a Danish woman who established an underground adoption agency in post-World War I Copenhagen to help poor women dealing with unwanted pregnancies.
Starring Trine Dyrholm, Vic Carmen Sonne and Besir Zeciri (“Wildland”), the film follows Karoline (Sonne), a young factory worker who is struggling to survive on the fringes of society. When she finds herself unemployed, abandoned and pregnant, she meets Dagmar (Dyrholm), a charismatic shopkeeper who helps poor mothers to find foster homes for their unwanted children.

Everyone has their own idea of what constitutes religious music. Madonna’s “Holiday” probably wouldn’t make the cut for most people. Despite this, two musicians have claimed that the song was an act of God. You don’t get much more religious than that.
1 of the writers of Madonna’s ‘Holiday’ said every songwriter receives a song from God
“Holiday” was co-written by Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens. During a 2012 interview with Blogcritics, Hudson had an interesting explanation of the song’s origins. “There are certain songs that God gives you as a writer,” he said. “‘Holiday’ was a gift. From our hard work out of the hundreds of songs we worked on, he looked down and said, ‘I’m gonna bless you with this song.’ I think that happens to all writers at some point.”
Stevens had a similar view of the track. “We always felt like it...

From the very early days of cinema, the love triangle has been a staple of romantic comedies and heartbreaking dramas alike. In its classic form, there’s either two guys and two girls both interested in the same girl or guy, who finds themself torn between the two possibilities. Fizzy screwball comedies usually ended with the love triangle resolving in favor of the lead; see, for example, how Katharine Hepburn’s free-spirited heroine in 1938 comedy “Holiday” steals Cary Grant from under the nose of her own sister (Doris Nolan). In dramas, the ending tends to be a tad more bittersweet, leading to iconically devastating moments like Humphrey Bogart saying goodbye to Ingrid Bergman before she hops on a plane to escape to safety with her husband Victor (Paul Henreid) during the climax of “Casablanca.”
However a love triangle ends, its clear why the formula is such a repeating trope in...

It’s hard to think of a dance musician more iconic than Madonna. It’s hard to think of a dance song better than Madonna’s “Holiday.” Notably, “Holiday” was written by members of a band who gave the song away. Here’s what they thought of the Queen of Pop’s take on their tune.
‘Holiday’ garnered praise from Kool & the Gang before Madonna made it a hit
Madonna co-wrote many of her hits, but “Holiday” was not one of them. The groovy post-disco song was penned by Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens, both members of the band Pure Energy. The song was produced by dance music legend John “Jellybean” Benitez.
During a 2012 interview with Blogcritics, Stevens explained how “Holiday” fell into the hands of the future Queen of Pop. “I remember Jellybean asking us for a song,” he said. “We had presented songs to him before. He said,...

Madonna has many obvious predecessors but Smokey Robinson is not one of them. Despite that, Robinson influenced one of the key ingredients of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.” The Queen of Pop revealed what she thought of “Like a Virgin” and some of her other early songs in retrospect.
Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ was inspired by Smokey Robinson and a bad relationship
Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly co-wrote “Like a Virgin.” When they wrote it, there was no way they could have known how important the song would become. During an interview with SongwriterUniverse, Steinberg explained how the magic happened.
“It was in 1983 that Tom and I wrote ‘Like a Virgin,'” he explained. “It started with the lyric first. I was driving around in my pickup truck and I got the idea for the song. The idea came out of a personal experience. I was in a devastating relationship,...

Madonna’s “Holiday” was a success, but it never managed to become a No. 1 hit in the United States. One of the writers of the track has a theory why the tune didn’t perform better. “Holiday” appeared on two different hit albums that helped define Madonna’s career.
There was never a music video for Madonna’s ‘Holiday’
Madonna co-wrote many of her hits, but “Holiday” was not one of them. The track was co-written by Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens. During a 2013 interview with Blogcritics, Hudson discussed why the song was not a huge hit on the chart. “Warner Bros. didn’t produce a music video for it at a time when music videos really started to make songs,” he opined. “Had they done a video, then ‘Holiday’ probably would’ve been a much bigger song than it was at the time; probably No. 1 pop.”
While Hudson didn’t get a No.

Some of Madonna‘s songs made waves without becoming No. 1 hits. One of her career-defining tracks didn’t even make the top 10. The song’s writers said the tune had a massive effect on the music industry.
Madonna’s favorite of her hit songs came from her early days
In a 2005 interview with CBS News, Madonna was asked to name her favorites among her top 10 singles. The Queen of Pop admitted she couldn’t name all her top 10 singles. She immediately chose “Holiday” as a personal favorite, only to be told that that song only reached No. 16. The charts just aren’t fair!
Afterward, Madonna picked several favorites that did hit the top 10. Specifically, she picked out “Like a Virgin,” “Material Girl,” and “Like a Prayer.” The Material Girl said she never would have imagined her career becoming as successful as it was. Who knows if she would have become...

Madonna‘s “Holiday” wasn’t a big hit, but it has a prominent place in our cultural memory. Case in point: one of Jessica Simpson’s songs is a massive rip-off of “Holiday.” Simpson herself discussed the obvious similarities.
Jessica Simpson said taking inspiration from Madonna’s ‘Holiday’ was for the greater good
In the early 1980s, dance music was dominated by a subgenre known as post-disco. It combined elements of traditional disco with synth-pop. Prominent examples of that style include Donna Summer’s “She Works Hard for the Money,” Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” and “Celebration” by Kool & the Gang. Madonna’s self-titled debut album is one of the most famous post-disco albums of all time. Post-disco was not a prominent genre in the 2000s, but Simpson managed to bring it back for one brief moment.
During a 2006 interview with MTV News, Simpson said Madonna’s “Holiday” subconsciously inspired her song “A Public Affair.

You might think Madonna‘s first album is simply overloaded with some of the Material Girls‘ best pop songs. According to the album’s producer, you’d be wrong! He said the album actually contains prophecies. Here’s what one musician had to say about the Queen of Pop.
Madonna’s producer wanted to challenge her on her 1st album
Reggie Lucas was a producer who worked with Roberta Flack and Miles Davis. He also served as the producer on Madonna’s self-titled debut album. During a 2013 interview with The Atlantic, Lucas discussed working with the Queen of Pop. “As a producer, you understood that your first job was to support people to achieve that end,” he said. “You challenged the artist just enough to bring out the best in them and introduce them to audiences that they normally wouldn’t be introduced to.

"Futurama" is no stranger to out-there stories, but sometimes, even this show needs an excuse to break the rules. That's where the anthology episodes come in: installments featuring three seven-or-so-minute-long themed segments where the status quo of the show doesn't apply.
"Futurama" inherited this formula from co-creator Matt Groening's previous series, "The Simpsons." However, "The Simpsons" developed a consistent formula for its anthology episodes: "Treehouse of Horror," where the Simpsons family (and friends) are put through parodies of horror/sci-fi stories (from "The Twilight Zone" to "Death Note"). "Treehouse of Horror" has been an annual "Simpsons" tradition since season 2, but the series isn't constrained by this. A handful of "Simpsons" episodes are anthologies of a different flavor (see "Simpsons Bible Stories" in season 10 or "Tales from the Public Domain" in season 13).
"Futurama," though? The sci-fi show doesn't have an equivalent tradition, perhaps as part of the show's efforts to not compete with "The Simpsons.

Britney Spears is one of numerous female pop stars who will be forever compared to Madonna. Fascinatingly, Spears said two of Madonna’s songs sound timeless to her. The two songs have nothing in common.

Madonna‘s “Like a Prayer” is one of the most controversial songs of all time, with some Christians finding its music video offensive. That’s especially interesting, considering that a Christian choir worked on the song. They had some interesting things to say about the song’s creation.
Madonna’s ‘Like a Prayer’ music video went farther than the Queen of Pop ever had before
Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” has one of the most inflammatory music videos of all time. It shows Madonna getting … busy … with a Catholic saint on an altar. Some could see it as a metaphor for wanting to commune with God, but a lot of Christians saw it as a licentious desecration of their faith. While Madonna had previously released risque videos for songs such as “Like a Virgin” and “Open Your Heart,” she crossed a new line with “Like a Prayer.”

It’s undeniable that Michael Jackson was the King of Pop and Madonna is the Queen of Pop — but only one of them had the higher net worth. While the two stars ruled the 1980s, they had very different careers. Shockingly, one of them was worth over a billion dollars more than the other.
Madonna’s net worth is huge
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Madonna was born on August 16, 1958, in Bay City, Michigan. She debuted with the now-forgotten single “Everybody,” but her self-titled debut album produced three subsequent hits: “Holiday,” “Borderline,” and “Lucky Star.” She became a megastar with her second album, Like a Virgin. Between the album’s title track and the song “Material Girl,” Madonna established herself as a provocative performer who was not afraid to flaunt her sexuality.

In 2004, Rolling Stone launched its 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. Tabulated from a massive vote that had artists, industry figures, and critics weighing in, the list has been a source of conversation, inspiration, and controversy for two decades. It’s one of the most popular, influential — and argued-over — features the magazine has ever done.
So we set out to make it even bigger, better, and fresher. In 2021, we completely overhauled our 500 Songs list, with a whole new batch of voters from all over the music map. Our new podcast,...

Hollywood isn’t generally going great, even for experts like Hugh Grant. Recently, he spilled the beans on feeling nervous working with three highly coveted actresses. One of them is Kate Winslet, known for her mind-blowing acting chops, who caused the 63-year-old to feel a little jittery.
Hugh Grant in Love Actually
Then there’s Nicole Kidman, and Meryl Streep, two more stalwart entertainers who were included along with the remaining blend of nerves. These leading women certainly had Grant feeling the strain. It’s interesting to hear what the actor had to say about sharing the screen with these Hollywood symbols.
Hugh Grant Confessed His Fear Of Collaborating With Three Iconic Actresses
Hugh Grant opened up, having an apprehensive outlook on teaming up with Hollywood heavyweights like Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, and Nicole Kidman. Despite his vocational achievement, Grant admitted to being threatened by their ability.

Ajay Devgn’s Shaitaan Leads The Holi Collection At The Box Office (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Despite Holi’s partial Holiday accommodating closed theaters for half a day in most parts of the country, Ajay Devgn’s Shaitaan has managed to churn out phenomenal numbers. The 3rd Sunday has already taken the total of the film to 129 crore at the box office.
Now, with Holi’s partial Holiday, the horror flick, helmed by Vikas Bahl, has managed to cross 132 crore at the box office, at the least. The early trends suggest that it earned 3.15 – 3.40 crore on Monday, Holi.
Consider It A Jump
However, the collections overall have dropped on Holi as compared to 3rd Sunday on March 24. But still, the Holi box office collection for Shaitaan should be considered a jump on Monday with a 3+ crore collection since the theaters were closed in the first half in most parts of north and central India.

Shaitaan is good on Sunday, will benefit from Holi holiday today. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Sunday proved to be yet another good day for Shaitaan as collections came to 4.50 crores*. This is nice as we are talking about the third Sunday here, and that too for a non-event film. Moreover, the Vikas Bahl film also belongs to the supernatural genre, and typically such films have a shelf life of a maximum of two weeks. However, Shaitaan is continuing to do quite well even in the third week and such is the kind of hold that it’s demonstrating that the good run will continue for the next few weeks as well.
The collections of the film have now zoomed up to 129 crores*, and many would have presumed that this would be the best-case scenario when it comes to the lifetime total. Here, I am not talking about pre-release predictions because back then,...

Adah Sharma Opens Up About Her Role In Bastar: The Naxal Story(Photo Credit – Instagram)
Adah Sharma, who started out with the horror hit 1920 (2008), has since been known for the sheer variety in her work—Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada movies, Hindi web series, short films, and music videos. Her cream includes Hasee Toh Phasee, Commando 2, the series Holiday, and the short Tindey. And last year, she played the central character in the blockbuster The Kerala Story, which, in terms of Roi, was the biggest hit of 2023.

You can probably sum it all up in just one word: Barbenheimer.
It’s not a word found in Webster’s, but one that’s instantly recognizable to movie fans and everyone in all areas of the entertainment industry. Now it’s probably your key entry into the closing act of the very long Oscar season, one that started in earnest over Labor Day with the fall festivals at Venice and Telluride, and just a week later at Toronto. But really, this year got a significant start at Cannes with the debuts in May of Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall, Grand Prize winner The Zone of Interest, and the World Premiere of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.

"Star Wars" fans of a certain age sat through it on television. Younger fans had to hunt for it on the Internet. It was the debut of Boba Fett, and there was an excruciatingly long Wookiee domestic scene without any dialogue but plenty of grunts and groans. Yes, friends, I'm talking about the "Star Wars Holiday Special." Carrie Fisher sings while high as a kite, Mark Hamill wears an astonishing amount of makeup, and Harrison Ford is clearly unhappy to be there.

On Thanksgiving Day, President Joe Biden joined other members of the first family for a frigid swim in the November waters off Nantucket.
Naomi Biden, the president’s granddaughter, shared their tradition of the “Annual Biden fam polar bear plunge” on X and expressed her Thanksgiving wishes. Along with the post was a photo that showcased some family members wrapped in towels on a rocky beach after their dip in the cold waters.
The water temperatures in the Nantucket Sound measured a bitter 48°F on Thursday afternoon. Biden has famously spent almost every Thanksgiving on the island since 1975. While he was vice president, Biden and his grandchildren frequently participated in Nantucket’s annual Cold Turkey Plunge, a charitable event where participants race into the icy saltwater and swiftly return to the shore.
For this year’s swim, it seems that the president chose to use the waters near billionaire David Rubenstein‘s 13-acre beachfront estate.

On November 1, 2023, Variety printed an article wherein a Marvel insider -- careful to keep their name hidden -- noted that Marvel Studios was "truly ****ed" when it came to the character of Kang (Jonathan Majors). Kang, some Marvel fans might be able to tell you, is an interdimensional, time-traveling supervillain who is in league with myriad duplicates of himself from across the multiverse. Kang is hyper-intelligent and aims to erase whole timelines from the multiverse until he is essentially the only sentient being left standing. Or something. His motivation isn't wholly interesting. An upcoming film, as Disney announced in 2022, will be called "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty," so it seems clear that the company wants to arrange their next major team-up event -- a la "Avengers: Endgame" -- around Kang. The insider quoted in Variety has revealed that Kang is underwhelming. This, in addition to the slew of bad press surrounding Majors and his assault trial.

Madonna took to the stage Saturday evening for the first night of her rescheduled tour, and spoke publicly of her recent serious illness, telling her crowd, “I didn’t think I was going to make it.”
On stage at London’s O2 arena, she added, “Neither did my children, that’s why I woke up with them all around me.

Actor Kate Winslet took a break from starring in dramas to do the Nancy Meyers picture The Holiday. But although the feature was a lighthearted romantic comedy, Winslet asserted it was the hardest role she’d ever done.
Kate Winslet never played a modern English character before ‘The Holiday’ Kate Winslet | Alan Chapman/Dave Benett/Getty Images
Winslet was aware of how different The Holiday was from her usual pictures. For one, the feature was a romcom, which Winslet seldom starred in. It also focused on a contemporary English woman, which Winslet also never really played before. Whenever the actor did play contemporary characters, like in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, they were usually American. But her Holiday character, Iris, was so similar to her that Winslet was uncomfortable in the role.

New true crime documentary series Who Killed Jill Dando? is now streaming on Netflix, and overall it’s a fairly thoughtful and comprehensive look back at the shocking murder of the beloved TV presenter, albeit one that stumbles at the finish line.
Dando was murdered on her doorstep in Fulham, southwest London, back in 1999. Due to her popularity and the nature of the crime itself, both the public and the police were keen to see the crime solved as soon as possible. Those who live in the UK or are familiar with the case will know what happened next: the identity of Dando’s killer remains a mystery 24 years later.
Who Killed Jill Dando? seeks to keep the events surrounding her death fresh in our minds, interviewing those who were close to her and bringing in the man who was wrongfully convicted of her murder to ask him in a...

One can often tell a cinephile by the rituals they establish. For my part, I begin every summer by revisiting Jacques Tati’s Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (1953), the feature debut of his most beloved character. I can no longer remember what drew me to this habit outside of a strong association of the season with the smooth jazz theme to the film “Quel temps fait-il à Paris?”, written by Alain Romans. Revisiting the film last summer, I decided for the first time to put on the 1953 version of the movie instead of the 1978 version I usually watch, which is labeled “definitive” by Les Films de Mon Oncle, the foundation responsible for the restoration and rerelease of Tati’s films. Outside of one addition to this later cut, I was unaware of the differences between them, and couldn’t find much information about the original release. Almost immediately, I was shocked to...
