Macaw is named after the tropical bird the macaw, and is also a pun on the Southern Chinese city of Macau, famous for its casinos.
Gladstone Gander's outfit as a child is how he dresses in the comics.
Toad Liu Hai is based on several mythological aspects of Chinese mythology:
- His name comes from Liu Haichan, a Chinese god of wealth
- He is a toad. Liu Haichan carried around a money toad (jin chan) which represents wealth
- He is colored jade green. In China, jade is an auspicious color associated with immortality.
This episode reveals that Scrooge hates gambling. This comes from the comics, where it is established that Scrooge grew up in the Klondike, where gambling was a pastime, but saw how it took peoples' money and so never indulged in gambling himself.
This is the first time in any English comic or cartoon that the nephews refer to Gladstone Gander as family (he was their mother's first cousin, and counts as a relation of Scrooge and Donald).
