Shane MacGowan was known to enjoy an adult beverage or two — or ten. As mourners celebrated his life, the Pogues frontman made sure the drinks kept on flowing, as he left behind more than $12,000 to pay for the bar tab at his wake.
The Independent reports that following MacGowan’s funeral on December 8th, friends and family gathered at the singer’s favorite local pub, the Thatched Cottage in Nenagh. There, they enjoyed drinks courtesy of MacGowan.
“One of infamously hard-boozing MacGowan’s former drinking partners” told The Independent that MacGowan handed over €10,000 to be used for the bar tab, saying it was, “Shane’s last request.”
Update: MacGowan’s wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, clarified that “his last request was for peace and love in the world.”

“Big Mouth” is the Emmy front-runner for Best Animated Program, according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users as of this writing. This is the show’s third straight nomination, but it would be its first win. For that matter, it would be the first win for Netflix, which has yet to claim this prize despite a couple of additional noms in the last two years for the critically acclaimed cult hit “BoJack Horseman.” To win, though, “Big Mouth” will have to get past three shows that have a combined 18 previous victories between them: “The Simpsons,” “South Park,” and “Bob’s Burgers.”

Stars: Nicolas Cage, Emily Tosta, Rick Reitz, Beth Grant, Caylee Cowan, Willy Weasel | Written by G.O. Parsons | Directed by Kevin Lewis
In my humble opinion Willy’s Wonderland is easily the best movie of Nic Cage’s career! I thought it was impossible for Nicolas Cage to get back to the winning ways of the mid 90s… Remember that 5 year run when he dropped The Rock, Con Air, Face Off, Kiss of Death, Snake Eyes and a couple more? Seriously between 1995 and 2000 Cage made about 9 absolute bangers and won an Oscar. Since then he has been stuck in a somewhat middling ground with a 50/50 ratio of good to bad movies.
Then somewhere around 2016-17 Cage seemingly decided it is time to just embrace the nonsense. Mom and Dad came out and banged, Mandy, Colour Out of Space, Primal, Jiu Jitsu and now Willy’s Wonderland. I’m not saying he has stopped making misfires but,...

Adult Swim’s “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal,” FX’s “Archer” and NBC’s “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” are among this year’s first batch of Emmy victors, as the Television Academy announced juried award winners on Tuesday.
The juried categories included nods for choreography, interactive programming and motion design, which will be handed out on Thursday, Sept. 17, during the fourth night of the 2020 Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
Juried categories don’t include nominations, but instead all entrants are screened by a panel of professionals in the appropriate peer group. Winners are determined by a one-step evaluation — which include an open-discussion deliveration of each entrant’s work — followed by a “thorough review of the merits of awarding the Emmy.”
Among this year’s juried Emmy award winners, choreographer Mandy Moore won outstanding choreography for scripted programming, for “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.” It’s Moore’s third Emmy.

The word “psychedelic” certainly applies when describing “Son of the White Mare,” director Marcell Jankovics’ stunning 1981 animated odyssey, which finally makes its way to American audiences nearly 40 years later. Viewers don’t have to ingest psychedelics to appreciate the visual poetry of every frame, but : Comprised of shimmering bright colors, it’s a Hungarian folk tale that bends, twirls, and morphs, with an all-consuming energy that never lets up. “Son of the White Mare” may be the greatest psychedelic animated movie ever made.
The movie’s hypnotic power works in tandem with a simple narrative arc — a fallen king, the noble son rising from the ashes to set things right, the usual jam. The animation invites readymade comparisons to two earlier stalwarts of the genre, “Fantastic Planet” and “Yellow Submarine,” owing enough to those precedents that it may as well be conceived on a grid. At the same time,...

There are slow months for streaming services and then there are “choose a decade-old Chris Nolan movie as a header image” slow months for streaming services. Amazon Prime’s August 2020 clearly falls into the latter camp.
That’s not to say that there aren’t some interesting options arriving this month. August 1 has a few intriguing movies including Four Weddings and a Funeral, Inception, Rain Man, and even Spider-Man 3. But there aren’t many Amazon originals to speak of. Chemical Hearts, starring Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) premieres on August 20. Then on August 28, subscribers can get a sneak peek at Amazon’s new The Boys after show Prime Rewind: Inside the Boys.
After that, however, it’s pretty much just Capone on August 10. And who could turn down watching Tom Hardy just being the Hardiest?

While lots of summer events around the world are opting to go online due to the coronavirus crisis, the Filming Italy Sardegna fest will be holding a physical edition on the island of Sardinia in the Forte Village resort near the capital city of Cagliari, where all guests will undergo complimentary Covid-19 tests upon arrival.
“We consulted with a medical committee and decided to follow a protocol combining two very fast non-invasive [coronavirus] tests to all our guests,” says Tiziana Rocca, the former Taormina Film Festival chief who two years ago launched this international event, which combines film and TV with a strong accent on women in the biz.
Rocca says she never really considered canceling and “talked to lots of U.S. talents” during the lockdown.
Among these is Matt Dillon, who this year is the fest’s honorary president and, luckily is in Italy, so will be able to attend.

We’re only just over halfway through July, but let’s hop ahead a couple of weeks into the future and take a look at what’s coming to Hulu in August. Next month will see the streaming service add an enormous list of movies and TV shows, with numerous classics amongst them, and everyone from horror to action to romance fans and even family audiences should be pleased with what’s coming.
The first day of the month, for example, brings the opening installments in two major horror franchises that kicked off in the late 80s – 1987’s Hellraiser and 1988’s Child’s Play. Sticking with the 80s, August 1st likewise sees 1986’s Top Gun added to the library, too. Not to mention 1981’s My Bloody Valentine.

If you were concerned about there being a content drought in August due to the coronavirus pandemic shutting down Hollywood, you were…absolutely right in those concerns.
For its new releases in August 2020, Hulu is following Apple, Disney, and even Peacock’s lead in taking things nice and slowly. The vast majority of the notable offerings here are of the library variety. Hulu adds classic movies like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Rain Man, and Top Gun on August 1. Those go along with the very much still-holds-up Casino Royale on August 31.
Hulu also has room for some interesting recent indie movies like Ordinary Love (Aug. 3) and Peanut Butter Falcon (Aug. 6). But when it comes to Hulu original content there’s not much going on. The unheralded Find Me in Paris debuts its third season on August 21. That is followed by original comedy The Binge on August 28. And that’s about it!

When Genndy Tartakovsky was wrapping up the final season of his Emmy-winning series Samarai Jack, he pitched an idea he’d long been playing with to his former boss at Cartoon Network, Mike Lazzo—the man who’d green-lit the Moscow-born, Chicago-based animator’s career-setting Dexter’s Laboratory, more than 20 years before.
Tartakovsky’s Primal started off as an idea aimed at children from the ages of six to 11. But as Tartakovsky’s career trajectory progressed, from Dexter’s Lab, to The Powerpuff Girls to Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars, which earned him a further 2 Emmys, so, too, did his ability to reinterpret his idea. It became the five half-hour episodes that make up the series as it is today: a visceral, bold 2D study of the relationship between a dinosaur (Fang) and a caveman (Spear), brought together by shared tragedy, with striking visuals and, barring a few grunts, no dialogue.

Be it the early work of Peter Jackson such as Bad Taste and Brain Dead, or more recent efforts such as Primal and The Loved Ones, horror from down under always seems to walk a very fine line be laughs and scares,...

Annecy 2020 Online’s first wave of special programming for its world-class French animation festival (June 15-30) will include making of sessions, previews, and works-in-progress. The biggest news is that indie feature “Animal Crackers,” which premiered at Annecy in 2017, returns as a making of program, having been acquired by streamer Netflix.
The CG children’s fantasy, directed by Tony Bancroft (“Mulan”) and Scott Christan Sava, concerns a magical box of cookies coming to the rescue of a rundown circus. It contains voice work by John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, and boasts the work of character designer Carter Goodrich (“Ice Age”).
Netflix is also bringing a work-in-progress presentation of “The Cuphead Show!” series for 2021, adapted from retro-style video game by showrunners Dave Wasson (“Mickey Mouse”) and Cosmo Segurson (“SpongeBob Squarepants”). Drawing on the classic ’30s rubber hose animation style of Disney and Fleischer, the comedy follows the misadventures of the impulsive Cuphead and his naive brother,...

King Features, who hold the rights to Popeye, have brought back Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars creator Genndy Tartakovsky to work on a new animated Popeye movie, five years after he abandoned his first attempt to develop a big budget project for the character over at Sony Pictures Animation.
Animation Magazine first reported news of the revived feature. Tartakovsky was originally linked to a Popeye film with Sony back in 2012, but by 2015 he’d left it behind in the midst of creative differences with the studio.
“I just wanted him to be Popeye. It’s a very deep, dark, and long story, but it was obvious they didn’t want it and it was obvious they didn’t have a lot of respect for me and I was handling their number one franchise [Hotel Transylvania],” Tartakovsky told Newsarama in 2017. “It wasn’t going to work because...

Few indie directors today navigate private spaces and fraught environments as effectively as Eliza Hittman, whose first two features “It Felt Like Love” and “Beach Rats” heralded a singular chronicler of young people in the thick of complicated desire.
With “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which premiered at Sundance and received an early VOD release on Friday after its theatrical release was truncated by the coronavirus, Hittman looks at one of the consequences of desire, as specifically experienced by the half that can get pregnant. In relaying a pair of teenage cousins’ tense overnight journey across the state line, Hittman wades into one of the more charged subjects of our time — abortion access — with the kind of sensitivity, focus and detail that will ensure its place as a dramatic standard for how to put a human face on a controversial topic.

Sports are shut down. Live theater is shut down. A visit to a movie theater sounds downright terrifying. Group activities are a nonstarter. But you know what we still have as America begins The Great Shut-In?
We’ve got TV.
Suddenly, the overwhelming quantity of television has gone from something that provokes anxiety to something that soothes it. Most of us won’t be leaving the house much, if at all, for the next few weeks, and an easy way to stay both calm and safe is to find a new binge.

AMC has greenlit “Pantheon,” its first animated series, with an order for two eight-episode seasons.
“Pantheon” is based on a series of short stories by Nebula and Hugo-award winning sci-fi author Ken Liu that center on “Uploaded Intelligence,” or human consciousness that has been uploaded to the cloud. The sci-fi drama’s episodes will be one hour long.

It’s that special time of year again when studios and networks put forth their Emmy-hopeful series and talent.
With more than 500 scripted shows alone vying for Television Academy Fyc event slots, some opt to build out their own spaces and present activations and stunts to capture additional voters’ attention. (Remember “‘Maisel’ Day”?) But for many, the traditional screening and panel setup is just as important. There, hundreds of voters can sample a show and engage with those who create it, all in a comfortable theater setting with food and drink to follow.
To keep track of all of the official Fyc events happening on both coasts, Variety has created this comprehensive schedule. Check back here periodically, as more events are still to be announced.

Did you enjoy Crawl from last year? That movie about alligators terrorizing a father and daughter in their own home in the middle of a hurricane. I know I did. It’s yet another reason never to live in Florida. Hell, Quentin Tarantino even had it among his favorite films of 2019.
If you dug it though, then I have another animal-on-a-rampage movie for you that you’re going to want to pay attention to. And while it appears to lack a certain level of sophistication that Crawl surprisingly had, it still looks like you’ll have a good time with it.
The movie’s called Uncaged. No, it isn’t an autobiography of actor Nicolas Cage (sadly), but it is about a lion that escapes from a zoo and hunts people in Amsterdam. Forget National Treasure 3. I want them to combine Cage’s 2019 movie Primal and this. I haven’t seen either,...

Just a few weeks ago, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman were at CES giving the first look at the technology behind their new mobile streaming platform Quibi. Friday at Sundance however, Katzenberg moderated a panel of creators Lena Waithe, Kaitlin Olson and Veena Sud to give a taste of what you’ll actually be able to watch on it.
Waithe, Olson and Sud joined Katzenberg to talk about their specific projects that will appear on the platform when Quibi launches on April 6. Their projects are just a few of the dozens of shows that have already been announced so far and the 175 original shows in all that Katzenberg says will be available on the platform.

A record-setting 32 films were submitted in 2019 for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Of these, the biggest outlier is the clumsily-titled Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal: Tales of Savagery, which only barely deserves to be called a film at all. It's a feature-length repackaging of of the first five episodes of the television limited series Primal, which aired on Adult Swim in October (with another five coming sometime in 2020), and which was never at any point intended to be seen in any other form than as discrete 22-minute episodes. The condensed feature-length version existed solely to have something that could be put into theaters in Los Angeles for a week to qualify for the Oscars, and there are no plans for it to ever see the light of day again.
Ordinarily, that would be the kind of rule-bending chicanery that we disapprove of here at the Film Experience,...

Nicolas Cage won’t have to dig too deep for his next role as… himself.
The 55-year-old actor is set to star in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a film that will feature Cage as a “creatively unfulfilled,” less rich version of himself, according to Deadline.
In the movie, Cage reluctantly accepts a $1 million offer to perform at the party of one of his super fans, who also happens to be a Mexican billionaire, reports the outlet. When the party gets out of control, Cage must rely on some of his iconic characters to save himself.

Lionsgate is in final negotiations to land The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a film project scripted by Tom Gormican (Ghosted) & Kevin Etten. Deadline has confirmed that if the deal makes, the studio will make the meta feature that will star Nicolas Cage playing a version of himself. Gormican, who created the Fox comedy series Ghosted, which Etten executive produced, would direct.
The film tells the story of Nicolas Cage (Cage), who, in need of some money and creatively unfulfilled, begrudgingly accepts a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a Mexican billionaire super fan. When things take a wild turn, Nick is forced to become a version of some of his most iconic and beloved characters in order to extricate himself from an increasingly dangerous situation.
Kevin Turen will produce, along with Cage and Mike Nilon via their Saturn Films.

A review of The Mandalorian‘s second episode, “The Child,” coming up just as soon as weapons are part of my religion…
In its series premiere, The Mandalorian came across as fun but slight: a pulpy adventure about a stock anti-hero with a heart of gold, played with minimal dialogue by an expressive actor hidden entirely under a Beskar steel helmet.
If anything, “The Child” — written again by Jon Favreau, and directed by Rick Famuyiwa — should feel slighter. The episode clocks in at only 33 minutes. Unless you’re fluent in Jawa,...

“Primal” isn’t just a title that’s been used many times, it’s now a movie that seems to have put several prior movies in a food processor — to results that are edible, but unsurprisingly don’t taste like anything in particular, let alone induce a desire for seconds. This first directorial feature by longtime stunt coordinator Nicholas Powell stars the inescapable Nicolas Cage (in at least his fifth film of the year) as a grumpier Indiana Jones-type adventurer on a boat with dangerous wild animals as well as a world-class terrorist on the loose.
That this mashup of too many familiar action-thriller elements doesn’t emerge a generic mess is a credit to all involved. That it’s passably entertaining but also instantly forgettable comes as less of a surprise.

Nicolas Cage is set to star in a new horror film called Wally’s Wonderland, and this is going to be another great project for the actor that has been making some pretty crazy films lately.
Cage will take on the role of a janitor who is “forced to spend the night in a twisted amusement park where he is pulled into a living nightmare. As the threatening animatronic characters come to life, the janitor has to fight his way from one monster to another to survive until morning and get out of the park.”
That sounds like fun! I actually can’t wait to see Cage find himself battling a horde of animatronic characters! There’s no doubt that he’s going to have fun making this movie and that it’s going to entertaining audiences.
The film is being directed by Kevin Lewis (The Drop) from a script written by G.O. Parsons.

Four words. It only takes four words for me to sell you on the upcoming film “Primal.” Nicolas Cage. Jaguar. Boat. If that combination of words isn’t enough to make the little hairs on the back of your neck stand up in excitement, then there’s really no saving you. As a film fan, there are just certain combinations of actors and premise that sound too good to be true, and with “Primal,” it appears that this one might actually deliver.

Now that five nomination slots are guaranteed for the burgeoning animated feature Oscar category, it doesn’t matter that as many as 32 films have been submitted. Assuming they are eligible (several films have not yet had their required Los Angeles seven-day qualifying run), they will contend for the Oscar won last year by “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”

The characters in Genndy Tartakovsky’s latest animated series “Primal” don’t have dialogue. But as the creator and director explains, there’s something else missing from “Primal” that sets it apart.
“We definitely didn’t want to do a main villain. In this subject matter, it goes cliche super fast,” Tartakovsky told IndieWire. “In my first, early iteration, I thought, ‘Well, maybe halfway through the season when you need to introduce something besides just nature or normal world danger.’ And so I had this Pharaoh character. But it was like instantly ‘10,000 BC’ or ‘Stargate’ or you can name five movies that have done stuff like that. I really tried to go against the grain as far as what’s been done in this genre, and try to find original takes on it.”
So instead, “Primal” takes the traditional antagonist role and spreads it out over all that nature has to offer.
