That was fast
ariqakbar4 October 2019
Really tight story to tell. they succeed to maintain that itchy feeling for being chase by red and still maintain this warm summer vibe. The adventure feels really fun at the same time this story goes on. Every character seems doing a pretty good performance either.

a good fast movie after all.

Excellent little drama thriller
omendata6 September 2019
Great acting performances from all cast members with Jaeden Martell stealing the show and a definite future box office top actor in my opinion.

Story was not that new but the photography, pacing and music all blended well to create an interesting and well directed drama come thriller!

Competently done drama
CabbageCustard7 September 2019
Not much to complain about here. The acting is good, the story is good, there are likeable characters played by likable actors (Jaeden Martell and Keean Johnson) and a couple of 'hissable' villains (Alex Neustaedter and Daniel Zolghadri). The only trouble is that we've seen this sort of thing done many times before and there is nothing particularly unusual about this movie to make it stand out from the crowd. Even the soundtrack of this movie sounds like the sort of soundtrack all these movies have - all sombre cellos and slow strings. I couldn't help thinking of 'The Outsiders' as I watched this, though that is a much better movie and has the added benefit of coming first.

As I said, there is nothing wrong with this movie at all. It is done well and I enjoyed it. It just doesn't stand out.

Teen movie don't draw my attention except this
ks-6050011 October 2019
Story itself is not bad given the encounter and adventure of the teenage, at least not boring. And Jaeden act really make my attention focus on. A 17 yo boy can be that sophisticated is rare. Jaeden is going to be huge!

Good except for one big plot hole
LaverneandShirleysucks11 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Red stranded Peter on the island when they finished robbing the dead guy's house. So naturally he would need to find himself a ride back to the mainland. When Red found out he traded the cigars to the workers for a ride back, there would be no reason for him to suspect anything more since he was the one who stranded him and knew he would need to hitch a ride. Yet Red goes over to the island and hunkers down to wait all day there for Alan to return and thinking something was up. He had no reason to think that and it should've been written more logically to be believable----like just have Red follow him there instead. Other than that glaring plot hole, it was pretty decent and I liked that it was set in the 1980s and had a nostalgic feel to it.

VIEWS ON FILM review of Low Tide
burlesonjesse52 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"Are you gonna grow up to be the good guy or the bad guy". That's a quote from Sergeant Kent in 2019's Low Tide (my latest review).

Anyway, Low Tide is a numbing, languid drama/thriller that marks the directing debut of one Kevin McMullin (his only previous credit was a short called First Prize). For me, "Tide" at eighty-six drawn-out minutes, is like a mixture of The Outsiders, 2001's Bully, Stand by Me, and Hot Summer Nights.

Hinting at the 1980's with a rich sense of time and place and shot more than two years ago, Low Tide is well acted by its four young leads in Jaeden Lieberher, Keean Johnson, Alex Neustaedter, and Daniel Zolghadri. Lieberher is like Johnny Cade, Johnson is like Ponyboy Curtis, Neustaedter is like "Dally" Winston (or "Bob" Sheldon), and Zolghadri is like Randy Anderson. Author S. E. Hinton is probably smiling all the way from the Sooner State right about now.

"Tide's" story involves some teenage, Jersey Shore thieves who discover a gold coin treasure. Said treasure violently threatens the boys friendship when the police become hot on their tails. Each coin is worth a thousand dollars and these buds found about a hundred of them (dang).

Helmer McMullin creates "Tide's" atmospheric style while building tension with every careful inch. His editor (Ed Yonaitis) shapes the film in slow, tight cuts which favor the actor's rhythms. "Tide's" account entailing crime doesn't pay remnants, Coppola switchblade shots, and fragmented kinships, seems easy to follow.

My first question is where the heck are the parents when all this death and revenge is going on. My second question is what are these youngster characters gonna do later in life when their futures don't seem too bright to begin with. My final question is why didn't Bruce Springsteen make a "Tunnel of Love" cameo. Just kidding. Rating: Low Tide gets a slightly recommendable 3 stars and well, it's on the "low".

Low Tide (2019) - 5.7
Bonnell730 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Act 1 - 6.0

Act 2 - 5.6

Act 3 - 5.5

Film takes itself way too seriously for the subject matter and the age of the kids

Film never rises above mediocrity

Performances are bad to bland all around

Some decent moments scattered throughout

Passable film but wouldn't recommend

Opens with 3 young men robbing a rich home on the water and one of the kids breaks his ankle during an escape and leaves his shoe behind

Locals in this beach town

The kids hang out on the boardwalk with some girls, Alan and Mary hit it off

Local rich man dies and rope Alan's younger brother to help rob it

Cop shows us to Smitty's house with his lost boot

Red finds a gun and Peter and Alan find gold coins

The cop shows up and catches Alan, Red escapes on the boat and leaves Peter behind all alone with the coins

Cops tries to get through to Alan and says he can turn his life around and warns us about Red being dangerous and violent, asks for his help to put away Red for a stabbing

Peter uses the cigars to bargain a trip across back to the mainland

Peter calls out Red for leaving him behind and doesn't come in with the bag

Peter and Alan take one of the coins to the pawn shop and get 1000$ for it

Father doesn't get back til after the 4th of July so they have been on their own for a bit

The brothers go back to the island and dig up the bag of coins, comes out to 100,000$, Peter thinks they should sit on the coins until the summer is over and re-bury them

Two kids just talking about what they want to do with all of their money, everybody has had this kind of conversation

Alan buys a car and talks to Smitty about their situation, try to make this situation more important in the grand scheme of things than it actually is

Alan goes out with Mary, Peter sees Alan bought a car and is pissed that people will know they have money now

Alan feels regulated to being stuck in this town and thinks Peter can go to college and do great things

Keep seeing Red practicing with his gun, a good shot

Smitty and the bum snitch on Alan to Red putting him and Mary in danger

Smitty goes into Alan's house and finds his map with a coin, Peter is there and Red is on his way

Smitty and Red are really bad actors and annoying characters

Alan shows up before Red and wants to make a deal to get half the coins

Cop tries to get Red to turn himself in and flashes the boot to Red, who now knows that Smitty has snitched as well

Red shows up and Alan tells him he's out but Red says they are all doing one last house

They are just kids and are making everything so serious and life or death, very overly dramatic for their circumstances

Red calls 911 on the house and dips, it's Mary's house and the boys get caught

Mary sees Alan in the cop car, Red gets back to the docks and finds out about the cigars

Smitty has the map on his cast and says will take the cop there to show him the coins, coins not in the spot, Red sees them leaving

Pawn shop owner bails out Peter and see him at the anchor where he moves the coins

Mary gets her parents to drop the charges against them, and have a cheesy scene together

Peter is digging up the coins and Alan shows up to help

Red shoes up behind them with the gun, he's so lame and unbelievable as this psycho

Alan charges Red with the paddle and shoots Peter in the head and then tries to drown Alan

Peter was just grazed and now has the gun and shoots and kills Red and saves Alan

Peter and Alan dump the body as fireworks for the 4th go off and looks like these two brothers are going on the run with their coins

A24 +Jaeden Martell
yusufpiskin26 November 2020
Jaden again... In this day and age film lovers worship A24 as the gods of film (for good reason). Everyone and their mother has heard of Lady Bird and Call Me By Your Name. While these are great films they are far from "underground". Low Tide is somewhat of a hidden gem in the A24 collection, that is often overlooked.

Low tide is about a young boy who is taken in by is brother and his criminal friends to rob tourist's beach houses. In the last decade there haven't been any films released that capture the treasure hunting spirit of the Goonies. Low Tide is a coming of age movie that isn't rubbing it in your face. The "coming of age feeling" didn't hit me until the credits rolled, as a genuine coming of age film should. The movie captures a real feeling that isn't polished up and romanticized like many films like it.

I would absolutely recommend Low Tide to anyone looking for a coming of age adventure.

Solid teen summertime drama/thriller
carlos-pires19 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is a simple but very well done drama/thriller. Though the script revolves around some of the usual tropes of teenage growing pains, and on the figure of a possessive friend/bully, it does so in a believable and not clichéd way. And the ending clearly shows there was no compromise on the part of the creators of this movie, but not because the plot ending is in itself unexpected: it is the tone which is unexpected (and as such will leave a more lasting impression). All the other ingredients are good as well, from location, props, cinematography and cast - with all cast members delivering very good performances.

Honest review: A very impressive low budget indie from an amateur filmmaker
Top_Dawg_Critic8 September 2019
Wow, I have to say... "amateur" filmmaker Kevin McMullin makes his first ever full length feature film (only one prior short film) as executive producer, writer and director - and nails it. Mad props to him for putting together this little gem as well as he did - as a newbie.

Sure this film had flaws, but to present something better than some seasoned filmmakers have come out with lately, makes those flaws barely applicable, and certainly not worthy of all the 1's and 2's some of the wannabe critics on here gave this great indie film.

His directing behind the camera was great, and he directed his cast perfectly. His writing was also on point, although I did want a little more at the ending. The screenplay was very well put together, the cinematography excellent, and the score very fitting. There were however some editing issues. The casting was amazing, and all performances were exceptional and convincing. These youngsters certainly have a great future in acting ahead of them. Although I'm not a fan of slow paced films, this one was just right with its 84 min run-time.

This was a surprisingly very impressive low budget indie from an amateur filmmaker, and considering as such, is well deserving of my 8/10. If anyone questions my review as fake, click my username to see my 1000+ ratings and 700+ reviews.

I look forward to seeing more from Kevin McMullin and his young stars - perhaps a part 2?

Stupid
maevedugganjrd8 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The acting in this was mediocre. The main characters are so stupid that it had me screaming at the tv. It was frustrating how the hold friend group just snitched on each other. And the ENDING they're of course gonna find the body they didn't even go that far out to sea. And they're gonna be prime suspects. I hate this movie for how ignorant theses kids are. And even the smart one is just less idiotic compared to the rest of them.

A solid debut only lacking a little bit of X-factor
jtindahouse5 June 2020
I'm a bit of a sucker for dark adolescence-based thrillers. Growing up 'Mean Creek' was one of favourite guilty pleasures. 'Lord of the Flies' also had a place on my favourite films list. While 'Low Tide' can't quite live up to either of those two films, it still was a very decent effort, particularly for a first time writer/director. The story is simple, but not in a bad way. The simplicity of it gives the characters more room to flourish and also more room for the tension between them to escalate. This is certainly a film more about the characters than the story.

It feels like Jaeden Martell is in everything at the moment. After releasing nothing in 2018 he had a massive 2019 and now his television series 'Defending Jacob' has just finished. I'm not sure you'd call him the main character in 'Low Tide' but he certainly has a lot of screen time and a lot to do with the story. He's a very watchable actor who never steals scenes or takes away from other actors on the screen. He's clearly someone who filmmakers will be looking to sign on often in the future. In fact the whole cast of 'Low Tide' impressed me. There wasn't a weak performance in sight and everyone played off each other wonderfully.

The only thing this film was really lacking was some X-factor. It never had that moment that takes your breathe away. There are some tense scenes scattered throughout, but not one that stands out above the rest. Otherwise though 'Low Tide' is reasonably hard to fault. I recommend giving this one a shot.

Strong Cast
Rob-O-Cop10 September 2019
All the characters in this '70s/80s growing up in a small town' story were interesting and well rounded and believably delivered by a strong cast. It was supposed to be new jersey but it could and should have been small town nowhere as someone got upset about it not accurate representing that specific location. The story was pretty good, but not really the triumph of the movie. It covered territory we've seen many times before but the main thing was how well painted it was. it looked good, sounded good (great musical score), and interesting characters well acted, I might have mentioned that already. There's 2 brothers and their dynamic is warm, and a bad egg, (who we never really get to know, he's just bad for some reason), the girl (cool, cute, likeable and smart) the sheriff (ahead of the curve firm but cares), and creepy offsider playing both sides, etc etc. I did enjoy it and I liked the open ending which shows the damage done and leaves it there for us to consider the cost. If it had gone any further then what did it really have left to tell us for this film? A part 2 is definitely possible but with some of the actors becoming stars already it won't be so economical to make the next one. Credit where credit is due, a well made and well acted small story. Don't think too much about the basic plot (there aren't any holes or anything, it's just a pretty simple story), and enjoy the acting and atmosphere.

Filmed Well
Foutainoflife9 December 2019
6.5 Stars from me.

Not bad. It is more drama than thrill but it had a steady tension throughout. It is filmed well with some of the scenes being visually appealing. It has a steady but slow pace. I am not familiar with the actors but they held their own.

I wasn't crazy with how the film ended simply because I am detail oriented, felt like I was left with questions and was wanting more. All in all though, not a bad watch.

Tidy Little Thriller
dlmiley26 July 2022
I recently watched this tidy little thriller on cable. It is about 4 teenage friends living on the Jersey Shore who rob houses of vacationers. But then they decide to rob the house of a deceased local and find a cache of gold coins. Naturally, jealousies and betrayals ensue (remember "there is no honor among thieves"). Direction and photography are very good for a low budget film. And it is well acted by Jaeden Martell (of "Defending Jacob"), Keean Johnson ("Eurphoria"), Alex Neustaedter ("American Rust", and Daniel Zolghadri. Of the four Jaeden Martell's performance is the best without stealing the show from the other actors. Also stars the dependable Shea Whigham as a local cop. While not a perfect film, it is definitely a very good effort from first-time writer-director Kevin McMullin. 7/10.

Coming of age done right, yet comes up short on its larger than life aspects
Stephan_fr1 August 2023
I feel people are extremely harsh on this movie because it holds a mirror to the viewer's face and it makes them uncomfortable. The movie in essence wants to be parabole on how the love of money corrupts, and how moral relativism which drives our entire world is made to look small and puny in the face of actual altruistic good. To do so with demonstrates that unfortunately too often, the passage into adulthood is driven by tragedy.

Starting off as a seemingly innocent coming of age narrative, it quickly turns into a series of quick backstabbings and a thriller where you would be forgiven for forgetting the actors are children. And that's the whole point.

On the negative side, it is easy to feel that the four main characters are a little bit generic, but the director has the intelligence of introducing some subtlety to the story which as a whole does not paint a very pretty picture of the human condition. It plays with our emotions and by the third half of the movie you get this clear sense that no one can be trusted anymore, but doesn't fully actualise on it.

I also feel that the Peter character may have been destined in the initial script to represent a completely pure soul, maybe even going as far as drawing biblical allegories, but again that's not fully realised and you can sense that something is missing halfway through.

The movie rushes it's ending, almost as if they had that scene in mind from the very beginning and wanted to get to it as fast as possible to fit within the usual one and a half hour envelope. It's a shame because with an extra hour to it it could have been truly special. Sadly while it hits some right notes there are a few niggling problems with it that prevents it from reaching the cinematic heights I expected.

Sure for an A24 movie, this is no 'hereditary' or 'enemy'. But it still stands heads and shoulder above the other offerings on most streaming platforms.

6/10, keeping in mind my most often given score is a 1.

Lame movie! If you like movies that don't really end.. this is for you!
dan_slentz7 September 2019
Man, I HATE movies where the writer just leaves you with an inconclusive end. It's like the writer is saying "I wrote and wrote and wrote... so I was burned out before I could write a good ending". This movie muddles along and is about 200 of the same movies rolled into one. Acting was absolutely fine, but the story was a cookie cutter format of 1,000 movie like it.. but with NOTHING special to make it stand out, nor anything about it to make you say "Wow!! THAT was creative, different, and exciting!" Then, to make the whole thing worse, it had a "and so it goes" ending. In other words.. Don't expect an ending! Besides not having a creative, unique, or cool ending with a twist, there were absolutely MAJOR holes in the story. With the rating it had, I expected better.. but I've come to the conclusion that some people that make movies STACK reviews to jack up viewership. This movie was LAME!!

Decent but enjoyable
srjohannes12 February 2021
Low Tide is just decent. It's very enjoyable and is better than most of the decent A24 films. The plot is fine, but where it messes up is with all the subplots. There's too much going on at the same time, all the subplots feel tacked on. Especially the romance aspect. Even then, the romance just feels rushed. It isn't pointless, but it's not necessary. Some of the character choices feel unwarranted at times, this could've been improved if the exposition had been more focused. There are also a bunch of minor issues I had, but they're not really worth mentioning. This film despite being enjoyable isn't the best. I rate Low Tide a 7/10.

A Lot Missing
westsideschl30 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Story had promise. A clique of house robbing teens can't quite get it together; turn on each other; make bad decisions. Lots of holes in the story such as how the parental, justice & legal systems dealt with the consequences of their indiscretions. And, most unlikely, how they kept encountering each other at precisely the right moment in the most remote places. Ending was vague and a body dumped in sea water is going to float at some point.

Pretty great indie
richardlid6 September 2019
Well crafted indie flick with fun acting and some great twists! Enjoyed the heck out this one. Read a Washington Post article out of Tribeca that said this was only an $850k budget. Rare to see well directed stuff at this level. Reminds me of "Brick". Curious to see McMullen's next one.
