Fantastic episode
louiseallmark7 June 2018
Every female in this episode is suffering because of men who have the power to call the shots and do as they please! It was so sad, made me so angry and frustrated! The 'wonderful' Gilead that Serena helped to create has come back to hit her in the ass!

Strength
danchr-252438 June 2018
There's something remarkable about the women in this episode that makes me think of Dirty Harry, or pretty every other machismo movie.

This is strength. In an incredibly female manner. The portraits of the women are incredibly convincing.

Outstanding

Just when you believe the series has given you everything you can hope for, an episode like this comes along and you are not able grasp how they can make it better. It was a combination of heartbreak, suspense, drama like no other I can recall. Every scene was a small masterpiece with a purpose. Not a single second was lost in inconsequential drama. If you have not seen the series and want to know why it Is one of the best out there, this is the one episode to watch.

Title: Emmy
Br4ve-trave1or29 June 2018
Not going to get into details and spoilers about this episode just going to say that it was the as the others are: etter than the last! So this is the best so far!

I want to really dedicate this review to what the handmaids tale has done this second season. They have put done the first season, which even HBO failed to do with the other Massive hit series Westworld. This is the best drama series and deserves for the second straight year, another Emmy for the best drama series. Elizabeth Moss also should win another Emmy for best aactress in a drama, her second in a stunning resume!

Not a hyperbole, my favorite series is Mr. Robot, so when I say that this is the most groundbreaking series in terms of quality like breaking bad, The handmaids tale is it! Between the incredible camera views that sets each frame and scene up perfectly, I LOVE THE CAMERA WORK, or how this series makes you buy into its world so easily and makes for jarring viewing that shocks and awes you. Its brilliant and I can see 2-3 more seasons.

What thos episode managed to do is superb and something no show can produce in our feelings. The high tension, feeling disturbed, to feeling so hear warming and smiling, to feeling like you're mentally being water board (in the best way) to finishing the episode with a smile then thinking what a disturbing song for such a world and moment about to take place.

It's absolutely incredible viewing and one of the best series right now!!!! Take this, please, totally deserved...10/10

A Heartbreaking Dilemma
badeclerck2 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The eighth episode of The Handmaid's Tale Season 2 continues the compelling exploration of the evolving relationship between Ofred and Serena. Centered around the illness of baby Angela, the Putnams' child, who happens to be Janine's daughter, this episode delves into the complex dynamics and poignant emotions tied to motherhood in the dystopian world of Gilead.

The narrative unfolds as Janine discovers Angela's illness during a shopping trip, prompting a visceral reaction. Ofred, understanding Janine's distress, attempts to reassure and comfort her in the face of the child's deteriorating health. Back at the Waterford household, Ofred seeks Serena's guidance, leading to the revelation that the best doctor available is a woman-an act forbidden by Gilead's strict rules.

The subsequent narrative arc unfolds at the hospital, where Janine is granted a poignant reunion with Angela. The woman doctor, despite the gravity of the situation, provides little hope, advising the removal of life-sustaining machines. Janine, overwhelmed with grief, pleads for a final kiss, a request reluctantly granted by the Putnams.

The episode takes a dramatic turn when Commander Waterford confronts Serena and Ofred, revealing that he is aware of Serena's decision to allow the woman doctor access. In a brutal display of authority, he violently whips Serena in front of Ofred-a visceral reminder of the cruelty ingrained in Gilead's power structures.

The heart-wrenching conclusion sees Serena, emotionally shattered and yearning for connection, rebuff Ofred's attempt at empathy. The closing scene, with Janine holding a revived Angela, contrasts the personal triumphs and tragedies within Gilead's confines.

This episode is a masterful exploration of complex relationships and human vulnerability within the oppressive Gileadean regime. It unravels the inner struggles of Serena, highlighting her internal conflict as a woman trapped in the very society she helped shape. Her tears reflect not only the pain of her own predicament but also the realization that she, too, is a victim of Gilead's ruthless constraints.

The Handmaid's Tale continues to captivate audiences with its poignant storytelling and nuanced character development. Episode 8 serves as a powerful reminder of the intricate web of emotions and moral quandaries woven into the fabric of Gilead, providing a compelling foundation for the episodes that follow.

Women's Work
bobcobb30123 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The Janine character always entertains me whether she is being happy go lucky or fighting back against the machine. This episode really hit home how sad the situation is for these women with their babies, and if we didn't realize that already this showed us that.

Not the best episode, but a bit of a break from the normal routine and we did need that.

It is so bad that it beggars belief
biggus-359548 June 2018
I struggled through 8 episodes of this season, but I can't takes no more, this is the end for me. I could outline the (many) reasons why it is junk, but the fans won't listen, and the rest, the ones who already stopped watching this overrated junk, aren't here to care. I have probably seen worse shows, but I can't really remember any. tl:dr Once the book finished, and the screen writers took over, the end was nigh.

Generally good
Leofwine_draca17 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Generally a good episode, although it takes a long time to actually get going. There are new dynamics going on here and sometimes it feels a little bit jarring given how strict and repressive the new society has been depicted as previously, but I'd rather a lack of consistency over padding and boredom. The 'sick baby' sub-plot feels extraneous until a moving climax, but the real power in this episode comes from Serena who gets some very strong moments.

Pacing is unbearable
wiseguy23321 April 2020
I like introspective shows. Rectify for example was full of scenery and subtext that reflected and illuminated emotional worlds. Rectify also was known as a show with slow pacing but I was never bored. I usually like The Handmaid's Tale but most this episode is anguished staring and facial expressions. You do get some great images like The Commander talking to June thru a nearly fully closed door, tremulous, torn yet desperately trying to maintain his authoritarian presence. Yes there other moments that are striking but I found this pacing to be impossible to engage with. The plot needs to move and not left to rot in it's own moroseness

Unbelievable
gigi4275812 June 2018
I keep trying to figure out why this has such appeal. The acting is bad and the script is terrible!!! The cinematography is awful! Clearly they are making a statement however it is lost in the rhetoric. Why reference the biblical handmaid of Sarah and Abraham which led to the birth of Ishmael? And turning around and using New Testament scripture about wives submitting and taking it out of context???? Even if these things were. correct remember how heartbreaking the end was when Abraham sent the Handmaiden and his son Ishmael away. Terrible show horrible use of Biblical reference. I can't believe this mess continues to win. Actors separate yourselves from this before you stain your careers!

Janine is reunited with Angela
vivianla5 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Serena and June work together in Fred's office doing illegal work - writing and signing on behalf of Fred. She plays music and the song is lovely.

Nick comes home to Eden asking about sprucing up the place. She wants to know what colour he likes. He replies to her in a curt manner and leaves. We see June quickly hold his hand and lets go when passing. He looks at his hand as if he wants to hold on to the memory.

Janine and Emily were brought back due to the lesser number of handmaids from the bombing. Janine hears about Angela being ill from June. Serena wants to transfer a Martha who was the best doctor in neonatal care in her field.

At the hospital the Martha changes to sterile white clothing to enter the room where Angela is. While leaving down the stairway Serena yells at her for not knowing the solution. The Martha replies that she was the best in her field and there is no physical reason why Angela is like this.

Janine is invited to kiss Angela. Janine takes off her mask and gloves for skin-to-skin contact.

Serena and June arrive home. Nick informs them the Commander wants to see them both in his office. The Commander found out about the transfer of the Martha. He is not happy Serena and June wrote and forged his signature. He forces Serena to hold onto a chair as he whips her with his belt.

Serena goes to the master bedroom where she takes off her green attire. She is wearing a modern bra and panties. In the mirror we see streaks of bruises on her behind. She cries and tells June to go back to her room when June asks if she can do anything outside her door.

June goes to the Commander and apologizes for her actions. She is playing politics here. Serena and June's alliance is no longer a thing if there ever was. June wants to be in the favour of the Commander again.

Lydia wakes up to find Janine in her panties and white tank top holding a cooing Angela by the windowsill. It is so wholesome to watch Lydia talk to the baby.
