Great historical perspective
jopa-andrade29 May 2023
If you don't have a narrow biased view of history, this is a pretty good historical review of Europe, since pre historic times till today's complex political challenges. Obviously the sheer magnitude and diversity of Europe's history makes impossible for this 6 episode series to cover all relevant historical events, but it makes a very good selection of most of the key elements that made Europe what it is today. One might point out that it has a pro-EU view, but unless you miss the historical lessons of the bad outcomes that a fragmented Europe has brought throughout thousands of years until as recent as 80 years ago, you can't but support the peace, prosperity and strength of a United Europe versus the alternative the past shows very clearly. I do recommend it.

Utter Nonsense
kevinhamlet-8581918 June 2023
He cherry picks his facts and continually makes large assumptions about the reasoning behind various actions that occur from all sides. Utter drivel, with a not so subtle anti Christian bias. If he actually just told the stories and didn't have his own agenda then this could have been a good series. Unfortunately, his obvious dislike of certain factions leads him to completely obfuscate the facts. Moreover, as the series progresses it completely loses its way and begins to jump around as though they realized they didn't have enough material to fill an entire episode. How this has a 7.8 rating right now I don't know!

Only part of Europe
roxanasuciu2 January 2023
Not only is it subjective but it's not the story of Europe. It's the story of a part of Europe. Not a good place to understand Europe from.

I've only seen the first episode, but they left out so much about the Roman Empire, and the other nations in antiquity that were not predecessors of France, Germany or the UK.

Europe is so complex, and so much of this complexity is historical, I was really looking forward to a neutral, scientific depiction. This is not it.

To me it seems that they didn't want to tell the story of Europe, but one story about Europe that served some purpose. I was to disappointed to invest the time to learn which purpose.

A mess

Starting episode 3 it's just a mess, jumping from one century to another... it seems people just needed to justify the budget...

Really, really bad mistake

Clark has the gall to say in the episode I just saw on arte that Europe has left wars behind it.

Has he not heard of Yugoslavia? Of Ukraine? Of Georgia"

This from a historian? A Hollywoodesque buffoon..

Pure propaganda

Warning: Spoilers
When Muslims conquer, it's described without adjectives. When Christians conquer, it's bloody, cruel, etc. Typical modern and inaccurate historiography. The First Crusade is launched just like that, with no apparent reason. To explain it, Clark would have to admit that the Muslim Turks have conquered Asia Minor and the Eastern Empire was about to fall. The First Crusade gave 400 more years to the Eastern Empire.
