...if the production had been more sensitive, more in tune with what Haym and Handel wrote. Malena Ernman is directed to move around the set like a frenetic wind-up doll, getting in the action even when she's not singing. There are two guys who come in and out, moving an armoire then taking guns away from people (guns? In the middle ages?). What's it all about anyway? Thankfully there is some fine singing from Bejun Mehta and Danielle de Niese to keep me happy. From Theater an der Wien, 2011.
