As uninspired and uncreative as it gets, still dares to take itself so seriously

"Billy Kuckuck - Margot muss bleiben!" or just "Kuckuck" is a German television movie from 2018 and the title of these 1.5 hours makes already clear what to expect here: failure of the highest degree, i.e. lowest quality. When German titles simply use the protagonist's name it is never really a good sign, especially if the name is as cringe this one. But hey, of course it is so funny to have a name like Kuckuck and they clearly eren't scared of taking it to the next level of cringe that said Kuckuck also works as a bailiff. Sigh. And this is only the first half. the pseudo emotional second half is even worse implying how much our Billy cares for the old lady who is forced too leave her home. Honestly, I did not have anything against the old woman, but I still cheered for the young guy to go through with his plan to get her evicted, only for the unlikable Billy to lose the case. But the worst is really how they want us to see Billy as likable here from beginning to end. So cringeworthy when she leaves the old woman's house and starts rambling about how evil the man must be to hunt hthe old woman out of the house. Oh she truly is such a Robin Hood. Of course, they literally told us this afterwards when she is talking to a friend and the friend says something like that that she bascially deserves sainthood. Honestly, I wanted to throw up this moment. Of course, this is also a sexist film again. Look at all the male characters. The young guy I mentioned several times already, Billy's ex-husband who cheated on her with a woman who makes a living from pedicure (also this was a shot at comedy, so embarrassing), the snake guy, the assistant who barely says a word, so we don't forget it's all about Billy, the young love interest whose only purpose it is to charm Billy, who cares if he is 15-20 years younger. Billy sure is such an amazing woman that she deserves a man like that. And of course she is not easy, so she is playing hard and needs the man to fight for her. Just like all men should. Of course, aside from being a saint, Billy is also really good at her job as we find out in the very first scene with that woman up on the tree. I am pretty sure that people actually woking as bailiffs probably have a moment like this once or twice max during their under 50 years of work, but Billy in the most realistic manner has stuff like that always. Also the snake scene. Very nice by the way to "steal" a guy's pets if he has not much else in his life apparently, at least no money. Imagine if they had included his cat there. The Billy would not be seen as such a kind woman, right? But hey it's snakes. They are gross. It's okay.

So yeah, this film is extremely unrealistic all the time. Just take the example how the title character's mother actually knows the old woman who may have to leave her apartment. Or take the story with the assistant's relative it was I think. Also complete lack of authenticity and realism there. Feels 100% fake and scripted. By the way, the assistant is played by Burak Yigit, who is always easy to identify for me since I saw UMMAH. I don't think he is a bad actor, so a bit sad to see him in garbage films like this. As for Billy, she is played by Austrian Aglaia Szyszkowitz, who despite the name is a pretty prolific actress here in Germany and I have seen her in other stuff. Not particularly talented I would say though. She was attractive a few years ago and that probably makes sure that now she is still getting lead roles. Then again, no actress could have made this mess of a character work. All make-believe about her. The rest of the cast includes some more experienced actors, but I will not go a lot into detail about those. You can check out the cast list for yourself. I assume this title page and cast list were also set up by those who made this movie because the cast list is just as messy with Aglaia in second to last (not even on the main page, just detailed view) and Yigit listed last. Bizarre order. I am not surprised though. As for the smaller plots, namely the mother-daughter stories with Billy's mother and Billy's daughter, everything is just as disastrous as the core story with the old woman. So messed up, also the pregnancy and birthday stories. I don't want to go a lot into detail about those, but just forget them quickly. Still, one quick note about what Billy thinks about her daughter's boyfriends. the epitome of shoddy writing. Billy does not even know them one bit, yet immediately insults the first boyfriend and of course she is right and he is not treating the girl well, but seems pretty nice towards the second girlfriend in the final scene. Maybe because of his ethnicity? I mean I am not shocked at all that with this final idea they also wanted to make a statement on tolerance. Pretty sure this kid got cast for nothing, but his color. The epitome of racism really. Now, let's not get too much into detail there. Obviously, all the twists result in happy endings eventually here, almost all of them unrealistic. I would have preferred Billy to get fired because she is not doing her job, namely not helping the young man to get back the apartment he rightfully owns. So with all the absurdities this film must be set in a parallel universe. Maybe the worst thing about this 2018 movie, however, is that apparently it was enough of a success for a sequel to be released. And looking at how both films are far from old, it could very well happen that a third film and maybe more than that could follow in the coming years. Simply disgusting. I may sound harsh, but this film is so completely void of quality that it deserves it. Terrible writing, every time they were going for depth, character shades etc., they totally messed up. Oh yes of course Billy is also such a good friend that she eats some ice cream at the end with the old lady when all is over. Oh I almost forgot the guy who is helping Billy here and there. Of course, like all the other men he is way inferior to Billy too, wants to go on a date with her becaue Billy is so amazing. But after she used him we are tricked into believing that he is the bad guy with his meltdown while they were drinking coffee. Oh wait, equality warriors will argue that she did not use him and they indeed drank a coffee and hey you cannot blame Billy that these 30-year-old are drooling over her 50-year-old gorgeous self, can you? Good God, what a mess! Finally, as for Szyszkowitz, she has been in many many horrible movies over the years. No clue why people still cast her. I did like "Die Wunderübung", maybe her most known career effort by now, but that was also not really because of her portrayal, even if it is a lead role, but because of a pretty magnificent script. Okay, we are drifting a bit away now. The script here is the exact opposite for sure. I give this film a massive thumbs-down that was never in doubt and highly recommend you to skip this film. Then again, a look at the bodies of work and director Ruzicka and (even worse) writer Peters makes it extremely obvious that there was only one direction this film could take: Failure. And shame on them for using these beautiful birds for the protagonist's name. I'm flipping the bird to everybody who was a part of this project. From the heart!
