Gory, yet quite amusing
michal-robinson19 September 2021
Very entertaining. Never dull. Not for the squeamish. Noticeable Quentin Tarantino and Guy Richie influences, this film is perhaps even more violent. The director is also a Sergio Leone fan. Can't say enough about the incredible cinematography. If you ignore the buckets of blood, you can enjoy some truly beautiful (camera) shots.

A Tarantino(vsky) Blini Eastern...

... but a lot less subtle than the inspiration - think of a Takashi Miike yakuza massacre on steroids taking place in an abattoir during its closing down sale when fully stocked.

Russian blood to the head
valleyjohn21 November 2020
It's quite hard to categorise this film. I've see it called a horror , a western and a comedy and i guess it's a but of all of those but one thing i'm in no doubt about and that this is a gem of a movie.

This is a Russian film about a young woman who asks her boyfriend to kill her father because he abused her as a child , (or so she says ), but when he gets to her fathers apartment he find's her old man is more than a match .

I love this film.

It's deliciously violent but not in a horrible way. There are buckets of blood and an amazing amount of brutality but never did i feel it was nasty. It's almost like a cartoon. Not unlike Tom & Jerry or Road Runner . Nobody dies easily , hence the title , and when they do it's actually funny , if that makes any sense?

It has a great soundtrack . There is classical music , modern music and even a Spaghetti western score.

I can't recommend this highly enough. Don't let the subtitles put you off because it's all about the physicality and clever camera shots.

So. Much. Blood. And Lots of Fun.
boris_unanimate18 August 2020
If you'd have to describe this movie, it'd be Tarantino's 'Pulp Fiction' meets Guy Ritchie's 'Lock, Stock...'. It is a no nonsense tragicomedy with plenty of blood and violence. It helps that the protagonist is a very naive but kind-hearted guy who just wants justice, which is pure comedy.

I like how they did the absolute most with a shoestring budget and invested a lot in writing a good, engaging story. I had to look hard for this gem as it's not a big budget US popcorn flick, nor was it advertised anywhere in the West, but it's well worth the effort. Good movies never hide in plain sight.

Russian Tarantino

It all begins with a young man with a hammer and bad intent. His girlfriend has sent him on a mission to avenge some bad behavior by her not so nice daddy. Guns, knives and drills are used with great bloodshed throughout this fun filled action film. There are a few funny moments, but overall it is just a blood fest. No one involved has any redeeming values. In the end it never reaches the greatness of its' obvious influences, Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction. Putting aside these criticisms it is still worth your ninety-eight minutes.

Darkly funny!

Warning: Spoilers
Why Don't You Just Die! (Papa, sdokhni) is a lot more fun than it looks. The story starts off with young couple, Matvey (Aleksandr Kuznetsov) and Andrey (Vitaliy Khaev) making out. Andrey tells Matvey that her Father molested her and this sets Meyvey off on a revenge mission.

What ensues is a medley of slapstick violence, dark humour and a twist you will not see coming until it smacks you across the face. The acting is top, the gore effects are great. This is a delight. Let's just hope that Hollywood don't make a straight-to-the-bin remake.

Much more than just a splatter comedy
dom-minator5 November 2019
Having just caught this at a film festival, having read these reviews I feel I should defend the film as more than just a gruesome comedy, the Director himself would be offended at the suggestion that there isn't a lot more going on under the surface. Of course it is laced with a wry, bleak humour, and much of the blood spurting has a balletic, often fun energy. But energy is the key word here, the direction, the cinematography, the unusual movement of the camera that replaces where lazier directors would cut, the infectious soundtrack, the script that unravels it's mysteries precisely, I found the film to have very unique and energetic style. Thrilling, gory yes, but grounded with excellent performances and a biting script that deconstructs corruption in Russian society; how that eats away at institutions, friends and family. I would recommend this film to anyone (with a strong stomach).

Enjoyable

Warning: Spoilers
Unlike the Western movies that I have watched, the movie makes its own statement of killing someone at the very beginning, when you are thinking, "Huh? What are you (the director) gonna do after killing him that early?", you will know there are a few background stories waiting for you until the end of this 100-minute movie right after. The story itself is not super special but the music made it entertaining, some silence scenes added tension to the movie and the actors made it humorous. The movie itself is kinda bloody but the exaggerated visual presentation and the music had slightly ease the disturbing feelings.

I tried to watch a few Russian movies during my flights but did not finish one but I would recommend this one.

Dense Story Telling, Sometimes Excessive!
Breumaster16 August 2020
Warning for sensitive people: This movie contains very explicit violence, very hard visualized violence and bloody scenes - liters of blood. The story beginns slowly with a guy who wants to kill a man, who he believes has raped his own daughter. The man is a police man - an investigator - so the situation escalates.

The story is shown from different angles and times. The time jumps are ok, because they are a continous part of story telling. Time by time other characters are added, so the story becomes enhanced until the end, with a few turns in it. Clever story! :D

Most of the story happens in one flat, but there are several side scenarios, especially in the time jumps. The violent scenes are greatly exaggerated visually, to show the audience some blood showers. But on the other hand it is also very comedic and always ballances on a fine line to not get too serious. I think it's the mix of story telling, good camera shots, good cutting, good acting, gory visuals and humor that makes it interesting. There is also some weired folk music, which makes it even more bizarre. I really liked it.

Tarantino and Ritchie make their version of Saw
nlo-3570912 April 2020
A tight little horror/criminal drama/dark comedy title from a young Russian director. It won't change your world but will remind you what a movie made with passion and good taste can look like, even made on a tiny budget.

The boyfriend reminded me of Daniel Craig.

Russian Tarantino
BandSAboutMovies28 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Andrei is a detective and the world's most horrible father. He has brought together a group of people who all want revenge on him, including his angry daughter, a brutal criminal and a cheated cop. They all want revenge. So who is gonna get it?

Kirill Sokolov's debut film calls to mind the cinematic styles of those he refers to as his favorite directors: Sergio Leone, Martin McDonagh, Park Chan-wook, Martin Scorsese, and, foremost amongst these greats, Quentin Tarantino.

Somehow, this movie takes a Russian spin on a Western action film, which gives it the signposts that will be able to guide audiences through it, but allows those looking for something unique their own avenues to travel throughout the film.

Matvey has a mission. His girlfriend feels that her father - the aforementioned Andrei - has shamed her. So he must kill the old man with a hammer. Easier said than done.

Andrei has a lot of fight in him. Matvey can take an inordinate amount of damage before dying. This "meet the parents" tale is filled with an overwhelming amount of violence, blood and gore. Which is a long way to say that this is awesome.

The Arrow release also includes four short films by the director: Could Be Worse, The Outcome, The Flame and Sisyphus is Happy. It also has the trailer, behind the scenes footage and even the storyboards used to make this.

I had no idea what to expect from this film and ended up really enjoying it. Consider this a recommendation for you to grab this for yourself.

More than...
mark-emerson3 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Just a Russian Tarantino. The gore becomes comedic to the end and then narrative remains one dimensional but there are nods to Leone and Morricone. Aleksandr Kuznetsov pulls off the role of reluctant hero with the ease and perhaps the only character to be morally pristine.

What a lovely loving Russian family
Dottsylove10 November 2021
Sheesh, this is decidedly a very Russian film which I really didn't know they made. Different countries like different endings and this was a treat. Usually you don't expect that to happen. A woman coerces her boyfriend to kill someone who has allegedly abused her as a child. Bloody well engaging from the very start. 5.9-6.3 stars out of 10.

Unconventional acquaintance or Cool and hilarious Russian comedy
lyubitelfilmov8 February 2021
Black comedy. I heard a lot of good reviews about this picture, and even more so I was very much interested in the genre of "black comedy", and even domestic production. How could I miss this? Nevertheless, I missed it and did not go to see this picture in the cinema - and now I regret it, well, at least now I was able to watch it - and get just a hurricane of enthusiastic emotions, which I simply cannot keep silent about, and here is my brief opinion - Cool and a hilarious Russian comedy. I don't want to talk about the shortcomings, and I didn't notice them here, so I'll write down the merits of this black comedy, and you just have to listen to this and write comments on this. Now I start. So, here they are: 1. Scenario - the picture begins with the fact that Matvey, a young boy, breaks into the apartment in order to kill Andrei Gennadievich - the father of his girlfriend and an opera at work. The showdown is briefly interrupted by the wife of Andrei Gennadievich, but this truce does not last long - and a bloody fight takes place. Well, then I simply have no right to tell you, because you have to listen and watch it yourself. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and elaboration of the script, for which the young director Kirill Sokolov was responsible, for whom this picture was the first full-length work (before that he had directed four short films). The script keeps in suspense, and in the end it gives out an unexpected one, although there will be similar moments in the course of the story. For the finale, I am ready to shake hands with the director completely shamelessly. For a long time I have not been so pleased with the national cinema (the last time it was "Balkan frontier"). When there is a desire, then everything will work out! 2. Humor - it is black here, even blacker than ever. Here you and satire, and ridicule, and mockery, and cruelty (prohibitive amount). And if at first the humor did not impress me, then from the fifteenth minute I laughed out loud (and not only at humor, but also at the scenario twists). The humor here is of high quality, it is clear who is inspired (more on that below) and works perfectly, plus the actors give their best. Kirill Sokolov was also responsible for humor here. Well done! 3. Tin - blood, liters, no - rivers of blood, mat, severed limbs, the general tin of the ongoing massacre contrasts strongly with the bright and colorful picture. It is not in vain that the painting has an age limit of "18+", because the tin is gushing over the edge here and cannot stop. I'm not a big fan of this, but here it all looked more appropriate than ever and perfectly complements the overall picture of everything that happens. 4. Heroes - at first glance, they seem to be the most ordinary people, but gradually, as the scenario develops, you understand what kind of "bad people" they are and how much black can sit in an ordinary person. All the characters are well written and taken from real life, and we see their images every day, which adds sympathy to the picture. 5. Intimacy - almost all the action of the picture takes place in the apartment of Andrei Gennadievich, and there are a lot of events happening there (as in another cult foreign film). Therefore, the viewer does not have time to get bored, because intimacy does not interfere with the picture at all, because the script is written well. 6. Music - it is inspired by what, you know, but, nevertheless, it fits perfectly into all this mess and creates the right mood and fits perfectly into the atmosphere of bloody madness. 7. Somewhere we have already seen all this! - in such a simple way, I want to say that Kirill Sokolov was very much inspired by the paintings of the Englishman Guy Ritchie and the American Quentin Tarantino, which he does not hide from us, because some moments very much resemble the famous scenes from the works of these outstanding modern directors, like music. It could be a minus, if not for one "but" - Kirill Sokolov reworked these moments and perfectly adapted them to Russian modern realities (which, in fact, did Tarantino in his works, and did not hide this fact). A little about the main characters: 1. Andrey Gennadievich performed by Vitaly Khaev is a stern father and head of the family, who is clearly not happy with the arrival of an unexpected guest. The charismatic Vitaly Khayev plays superbly an opera with great experience and not the most pleasant soul, with his skeletons in the closet, which creep out of all the cracks. More than half of the picture and funny moments are held on it. Bravo! 2. Matvey performed by Alexander Kuznetsov is a young guy of Andrey Gennadievich's daughter, who came to "deal with" him. He still does not suspect what kind of gimmick he was brought into and whether he will be able to get out of it. Alexander played this hero quite well. Of course, it does not pull the highest score, but it is worthy. 3. Natalia performed by Elena Shevchenko - the wife of Andrei Gennadievich and the mother of Olya - Matvey's girlfriend. With his behavior and words, he makes him interrupt the bloody showdown. Behaves accordingly to a loving wife and mother. It was unexpected to see Elena on the big screen many years later, because the last time I saw her was in the excellent New Year's film "Kazanskaya Orphan", where she played the main role. The picture clearly deserves your attention and is perfect for evening viewing (just remove the children from the screen, otherwise you will not end up with a hassle). As a result, we have an excellent Russian black comedy, inspired by foreign films, with an excellent script, music, atmosphere, unreal tin and good acting. My rating is 8 out of 10 and my recommendation for viewing!

Family issues
kosmasp15 April 2020
The international title of the movie may a bit more telling than the original title (even if I could not find a translation of the word "sdokhni", if that means anything) ... but the movie is quite funny and enganging. It is predictable as ... but that does not take anything away from the fun you can have while watching this (without being a sadist that is).

Having said that, you should not have issues with blood and violence. Remember this is just a movie. A movie that relies on brutal solutions rather than talking things out - with the expected results of course. Ideas are there and this is contained in a sense, but also quite out there ... Remember: do not try these things at home

Why Don't You Just Die
henry8-33 August 2021
A man arrives at a flat to kill a corrupt cop, who also happens to be an appalling father and husband. His attempt to murder the man will not be the only one.

Set largely in a single flat and clearly on a very limited budget, this extremely violent and quite funny black comedy is very Tarantinoesque in tone with staggering visceral gore within storylines that move back and forth quickly. This is all great fun with some genuinely impressive set pieces, including a terrific fight sequence, set out apparently in tribute to Sergio Leone with close ups on faces and a terrific soundtrack mixing modern pop with blatant Morricone western theme tribute throughout. Great fun but not for the squeamish.

Russian Tarantino meets Guy Ritchie movie
Guenniminator1 April 2022
It seemed to be a simple story: a cop's daughter instigates her boyfriend to kill her father. However, this plan goes terribly wrong. In the course of the film some characters and their backgrounds are told in small sequences. This film wants to be funny on the one hand, but also has some serious tones in between.

However, the excessively bloody violent sequences don't always fit and miss their goal of making the film appear funny in an ironic or sarcastic way.

The film left a lot of potential behind, but overall it has an average entertainment value.

Cinema Omnivore - Why Don't You Just Die! (2018) 6.3/10
lasttimeisaw30 August 2021
"Matvey's motive is explained with flashback, soon Andrey's partner Yevgenich (Gor) and Olya are respectively summoned to the apartment, double-crossing is let on, bloodbath resumes, bodies tot up until the story tails off unremarkably with a predictably arranged coda. The last man standing is the one who is the most morally squeaky clean. But who is him actually? A symbol of the younger generation thumbs its nose at the older, corrupt one, who will be annihilated by its own internecine rancor bred by paternalism, sexism and turpitude. Sokolov's subversive drift is loud and clear, but nothing particularly edifying to linger afterwards. When a didactic monologue is put into Olya's mouth, it rings stone-cold hollow."

'Why Don't You Just Die!' isn't just cinema, it's blunt force drama par excellence!'
Weirdling_Wolf21 November 2021
With grisly humour blacker than Stalin's heart, and the ghastly excesses of Rasputin's wrong-headed repertoire, the visually exciting, persistently playful, gallopingly gory, diabolically deadpan, audaciously blood-drenched thriller is a cordite-sharp breath of fresh despair, like 'Blood Simple' before it, 'Why Don't You Just Die!' has a relentless, glasspaper dry wit, a seismically sanguineous brutality, and a wickedly warped mystery at its immoral, crime-calcified core which maintains a murderously vice-like grip throughout. Fundamentally a terminally twisted immorality tale, wherein dangerous duplicity, unleavened greed, and old fashioned barbarism frequently confounds our young handsome hero's especially grievous undertaking. Ostensibly tasked by his vulpine, witheringly attractive, strong-willed girlfriend Olya (Evgeniya Kregzhde) to kill her brutal, slovenly cop father Andrey (Vitaliy Khaev), and not long after brave young Matvey (Aleksandr Kuznetsov) has fatefully struck his first heroic hammer blow of justice, the splendidly dynamic director Kirill Sokolov gorily unleashes a stomach-churning salvo of excruciating ultra-violence that reaches a bizarrely edifying apotheosis of savagely shot-gunning, ferociously flesh-filleting, boisterously bullet-shredded, bone-breaking brilliance, 'Why Don't You Just Die!' isn't just cinema, it's blunt force drama par excellence!'
