Interesting and Unique

I found the Conquering Northern China series to provide a view of northern China that I haven't seen before. Matt and Winston travel across country on motorcycles and explore various cultures along the way. Everyone they meet along the way seems to enjoy meeting them and, consequently, open up their homes and hearts to Winston and Matt in an engaging and entertaining way. I highly recommend this series.

Even better than the first!

If you enjoyed Winston's and C-Milk's first mini-series, Conquering Southern China, you'll love this. The North of China is indeed very different from the South, and the guys do a great job of opening this up to the viewers in an insightful and respectful way. The manner in which Winston and C-Milk portray how kind the Chinese locals are is very considerate and courtesy is shown by the guys throughout the show. We really enjoyed this and we're looking forward to see what they come up with next.

Just like being there in China

This is the second series. I am very addicted to watchin all the movies these two make. I appreciate some of the hard things they eat in the name of science.

I was at the Los Angeles screening and saw it this way first. People came from all over the USA to see the movie and meet with the guys after.

I'm looking forward to whatever is next.

ADVChina on Steroids

If you're a fan of Matt (laowhy86) and Winston (serpentza) on YouTube, you'll absolutely love this series. Conquering Northern China consists of 4 episodes, each around 45-50 minutes long, and follows the duo as they travel through the northern provinces of China on their motorcycles.

Each episode sees them traveling to a new city or region, trying out the food, talking to the locals, or just getting themselves into wild encounters.

For me, this series gave me a refreshing view of China and its people by avoiding all the political drama we see today. You get a sense of what people are really like in China (hint: extremely hospitable and kind) by the way this documentary portrays itself. It never takes itself too seriously--which is great, I love these guys' content just the way it is--and you end up feeling like you were just a part of an epic road trip with a couple of your pals.

I wholeheartedly recommended purchasing/renting this series and supporting these guys, because above all else, they provide genuine and honest views on what life in China is like.

China as it really is
timelley8 May 2018
Thoroughly enjoyed this.

The series gives a light-hearted view of the northern parts of China, an area that is not often shown in media. The cinematography is impressive for something that was done on a small budget.

I've been through a number of rural parts of China, albeit not the North, and this looks very authentic to me.

One of the greatest documentaries I have seen about China
benakaskyfall8 May 2018
I really enjoyed watching Conquering Southern China, but Conquering Northern China brought it to a whole new level. Winston and C-Milk had a blast filming it, you can see their passion about this project in every second of the documentary. I have seen and learned a lot of things about China, its culture and minorities just by watching their documentation. I am looking forward to their next project!

Honest recommendation: Curious about how China really is? Enjoy the documentation and check it out.

Movie lengthed Youtube video
vippinftw3 May 2018
If you like their Youtube channels, specifically their combined channel ADVChina then you'll enjoy this. If you don't like their Youtube videos, you won't like it. It's very much a feature lengthed version of their Youtubes. Which is not neccasarily a bad thing.

I enjoyed it the series, it's good to see them exploring the country they have chosen to live in and shows a bit more of their personality than the short Youtube videos can.

There are a lot of poor reviews here but it's quite easy to see it's due to the same reason they were denied access to several hotels - They are considered foreigners. While you see evidently the love and generosity that comes from the older generation and those that live outside the major cities, what you see from young people and those that stalk them online are bigoted hyperbole.

Looks Great but light on content.
footyvision1 January 2018
Great footage of NC but it seemed light on content and not a lot of interaction with the locals. I was waiting for something to happen. Even at the border with North Korea they just stood on the other side and said "Look there's North Korea" Then got scared and road off.No talking to the locals or anything interesting.

Overall it's probably a 2 hr doco for a Saturday afternoon.

markandau28 April 2018
While not a regular documentary that might take an in-depth look at the history of northern china it is a great look at the diverse people and cultural differences of the Chinese people outside the major cities today. With some fantastic scenery most people outside China will never get to see I loved it.

As someone that has lived in China, I found this great to watch. These guys are awesome for going out there and just being themselves. They do a great job of capturing China in its rawest form. Proud to be a Patreon to these guys.

"Awesome" Follow Up!
hueterm8 May 2018
"Conquering Northern China" (CNC) takes the format of Winston (SerpentZA) and Matt's (Laowhy86) first documentary "Conquering Southern China" and builds on it in every way. The length of the trip is doubled, the food is even more cringeworthy, and the locations are more varied, more interesting, and more risky.

Congratulations to Winston and Matt for an even better documentary experience the second time around!

Two buddies going by themselves on an exotic adventure to areas isolated from foreigners - modern-day Marco Polos
teabagzzz20 December 2017
I purchased this documentary from Vimeo about 1 week ago and I have watched it a several times already. This documentary is about two real-life friends (Matt and Winston) who have spent almost 10 years living in China and had decided to spend 40 days exploring the Northern regions of China on their motorcycles that they have built, while recording their adventures on the way.

What i enjoyed the most about this documentary is that you could really see these two guys had made an effort to learn the language and about the culture while they were there - So it's not like one of those typical 'I've been here for 6 months, but now i am a qualified expert!' types of travellers that you see on YouTube. I have watched this with my girlfriend (we're both of Chinese descent) and it was funny watching them react to things like eating things like 'sea penises' - which we've always believed was quite normal. At the same time, they always showed us a part of China that we've never known before - you'll even see some Chinese-speaking white Russian residents (Yes, actual fluent speaking Russians living in China). I won't ruin the rest, but Matt and Winston did get out of their comfort zones by approaching and interviewing different types of people all over China.

What's interesting is that both of these guys have their own YouTube channels and so you'll also get a chance to know their personalities/styles differently just by watching them. After coming across their channels less than 12 months ago and watching each video, i felt like i knew them well as if they were a close friend (despite them not knowing me at all).

There was a previous documentary (Conquering Southern China), which i have also purchased but i haven't seen yet. But i do hope to see another two documentary series about Conquering Western/Eastern China on their motorcycles.

To be quite honest, i really feel that this is the type of documentary that would be shown on Netflix. You won't be disappointed to watch this.

This is a sequel to the critically acclaimed Conquering Southern China.

In this sequel, Matthew and Winston went on their motorcycles again, riding throughout Northern China, showcasing breathtaking Northern Chinese sceneries, fascinating cultures, amazing food, and friendly people.

This was an absolute eye-opener even to a Chinese like myself, definitely a 10/10.

A very informative and exciting documentary about nowadays China
quentinwmorgan21 December 2017
I have been watching dozens of documentaries about Asia since I am really into Asian cultures and geography in general, and I have to admit that this one is by fare my favorite, with conquering southern China, because not only the format allows the viewers to see the "real China" but also because the way it's recorded , gives a very informative feeling and that's what I like the most. The immersion is deep and makes you feel like you are traveling with them in person.

I also of course recommend their youtube channels which are also very informative. This Guys really made me interested about China to the point that I am currently learning Mandarin.

Make sure you have plenty of times ahead of you when you start watching their videos since you'll be probably addicted to it like I became.

Thank you Winston and Matthew, i can't wait to visit you next march.

My friends and I loved this mini series. We all sat down and binged watch it multiple times. The quirky characters and interesting places the pair meet make for an interesting few hours. Totally worth the money to pickup on Vimeo would recommend it to anyone even if they aren't that interested in China!

Over-hyped by YouTube fans
wdftop29 January 2018
After realising that the two characters in the series were YouTube it made way more sense why the IMDB rating is so high.

I must give props to the sheer courage needed to try some of the food in the episodes but from a filmography perspective, it is extremely amateur.

Everything from the awkward dialogues, uninteresting direction, to the complete lack of actual content.

Take the first episode as an example, it was 60% just bike POV footage. 20% V-logging footage with various quality (inconsistent equipment used) and the other 20% were actually nice landscapes and food.

It barely got more interesting by the final episode.

I appreciate the effort and the vision (Top Gear like? With constant 'bets' and 'punishments') for the trip, but it definitely did not translate well in the final output.

I'm curious on their second series, but I really don't feel like it's worth the spend if the quality is on par with this series. I think it's not bad for a first try, but considering the great editing (not done by them) it was a shame that the direction lacked style and originality.

Great job again!!
darkmephisto8 May 2018
I'm glad to have caught this documentary which is the sequel to the previous Conquering Southern China. I really enjoyed this one because they got so close to North Korea and showed even some towns where they actually speak Korean and are very influenced by the proximity of the other country. Great documentary that is unbiased and honest. Thank you for all the hard work to the film makers and hope to see more films from them!!
