Warning: Spoilers
The best thing about this film is that it was shot in Alabama.

This is the story of a self absorbed young man who is bored. He is also convinced that he is capable of genius. I should end this review right here because the movie doesn't proceed much past this. This first paragraph is the spoiler by the way.

Family and friends try to convince him to get a job, snap out of it, and enjoy his life and attractive girlfriend who loves him (for unexplained reasons) and that he can pursue greatness while not being boring, whiny, self absorbed and an undiscovered genius. But no...

So he decides to isolate himself alone in the woods in a way he cannot get out of. Doing this will inspire him to greatness and writing unforgettable prose he hopes. He does not bring a gun or a knife, just a hatchet. He does not bring enough food or water. Or a first aid kit, phone or GPS, etc. He does bring a number of cameras and lights with him. That alone tells you all we need to know about him. This is another spoiler.

So for most of the film he's getting terrified at night by noises and running in circles in the dark, crying, whimpering begging, etc. None of it has any drama to it or an actual point. He's just really afraid of the dark and being in the woods and a grown man who's still bored. He's also still boring.

The actor is very good however. He began the movie boring and managed to maintain that throughout the film without breaking character for even a moment. He even has the skills to want the viewer to want the lead character to die after about 15 minutes of screen time and for that feeling to grow as the movie goes on. That's rare in a movie. The longer our hero was on screen the more I wanted him to die, please. It didn't even have to involve a ghost or monster. Just trip and crack the coco, please. But no...

At the end he just disappears. Maybe a ghoul ate him. Maybe he went insane. Maybe the spirits or some really uncomfortable looking chairs and a rusty bucket got him. Hard to say, which apparently is the point of the film. Harder to care.

At the end two actors who play the family and loved ones come out with a post script to the gone hero of undiscovered geniuses. But they are not convinced.

The filmmakers believed that they could make a film that might be profound in some way. They did try and deserve some credit for that. "Is too much silence a bad thing?" our hero asks, but he never gives himself or us a chance to find out. He speaks constantly. If you like films about introspective narcissists who have nothing of interest to say, you may enjoy this one.

self-indulgent tryhard is bad at at camping, the end
BtzLtd15 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is the story of a guy who loves the sound of his own voice SO MUCH that he goes "into the wild" to document himself blathering on about loneliness, life and death, and really dumb stories that he thinks are meaningful. then he hears NOISES in the WOODS(ooo, crazy!), and freaks out super hard. if i ran across a guy like this in the woods, i would probably mess with him too. he finds a creepy old cabin, and gets so scared that he pukes, its kinda the best moment in the movie. our hero then proceeds to play-act at going insane, then disappears without explanation. its barely mentionable, but our main character is a jerk to his girlfriend, and his best friend is a terrible person. why even write these characters in, their only use is to paint the man-child star as a hero and a deep thinker. ugh, hard pass. 3 stars instead of two because i fell asleep halfway through, then felt compelled to go back and watch the rest

So an idiot goes camping alone...
haskel-7295117 November 2020
If you've ever spent any time in the woods this movie is comedy gold. If you haven't, take my word for it this is comedy gold. An urbanite goes into the woods for 6 days for inspiration to write a "great novel". He hears noises. He gets scared. He runs and screams. A lot. Oh, his girlfriend thinks this is a horrible idea. She's the only smart character in this preposterously inane script. We get the requisite "is anyone there?" yells, the random talk to the camera scenes, the "how the hell are those batteries lasting so long?" thoughts, and of course, the quotation of scripture (yep) from a character who made no mention of religion previously. This is pretty lousy. It gets two stars for being unintentionally hilarious.

PS: Spoilers??? What is there to spoil??? Take this man's camera. Forever.

"The Nothing" sure is an appropriate title for this void of garbage
lynnebriangoldstein9 February 2020
They were trying to create some sort of Shakespearian "Descent into madness" theme, but these writers, my friend, are no Shakespeare. If you enjoy over an hour of a chubby guy breaking down like a wimp and crying, with the occasional interlude of "hearing things" and with literally no monster view payoff in the end, then this is your lucky day! Otherwise, avoid this garbage. It is a moralizing flop, and they did not even reward the viewer with a monster sighting. I mean, a guy in a furry monster suit would have been better than nothing!

Completely useless and a waste of time.
dantequenton11 February 2020
This movie actually made me register to IMDb. It was so unnecessary to make. Not really interested in the obviousness of how being isolated may cause stress and or anxiety. To imply nothing but insanity in itself makes this no different than every person's life should they choose it. I've watched bad movies. This just plain disappoints like no other bad movie. He wasn't a horrible actor, they were all sufficient considering the movie. Just the madness he slips into is nothing different than me for watching, just a lot less time to get there. Let's make a movie about not drinking water and how it will kill you next. Please save your time and frustration. That was similar to constipation, no matter how long you wait it sucks and the best result can only be crap.

"I can't speak, they'll get closer" Yeah, if only...
kbtoys10031 March 2021
Some pretentious loser decides to go out into the woods for a week but - to no surprise - scary stuff ensues.

Hardly an original plot for a found footage movie, but some Blair witch knockoffs in recent years have been decent, Survive The Hollow Shoals for example had some creepy scenes and an engaging one-man cast. The Nothing on the other hand, does not have an engaging lead. In Shoals the man is a Bear Grylls type man who teaches survival techniques which increasingly get harder as he finds he cannot leave. Here, however, our main man just attempts to philosophize about how a regular job isn't for him, his beautiful girlfriend is too concerned for him, blah blah blah.

Then he hears a spooky noise, talks about being scared and brings it back to him. Dear God man, just shut up!

Bad acting all around, no plot, no scares. The amount of time you should give this movie is in its title: Nothing.

True to name: "Nothing" even slightly entertaining here
jimmy-5342929 February 2020
This is actually reminiscent of "The Blair witch project" IF...You'd slashed the lousy budget of that flick in half, AND you cut out anything slightly scary or entertaining.

I lasted (read: wasted) 45 minutes before pulling the plug and that was 35 minutes to long.

If i had to justify the score of 1, it would be because the guys girlfriend was quite ok.

Simply terrible!

Nothing Good Comes to Mind
Cluey-751114 June 2020
A graduate forces a self imposed isolation in the middle of the woods to try to find himself and his creativity. With this experience he is going to finally be able to write his best seller. His (annoying) girlfriend drops him off and only she knows where he is. During the film I certainly forgot to listen to how long he was supposed to be out there, it turns out it was only 48hrs. And this is where my interest wained and I really wanted to turn it off. His girlfriend actually came up with a decent plot that she could be wiped out by a lorry on the way home and no one would know where he was. But alas this was not the case. So ill-prepared even for a brownie girl camp, our intrepid writer gets to grips with living in the 'wilderness' (if you listen closely, you can hear traffic in the background). Taken from Blair Witch but without any sense of suspense or tension, weird noises happen in the woods.

Having to suffer my own isolation due to Covid-19, with intermitent broadband and crap all on TV, I thought I would feel this guy's pain. Actually I just wanted something nasty to happen to him. I invested my time in watching the whole film, (film used extremely loosely) but I got nothing back except for characters who I wished would do us all a favour and put themselves and us out of our misery.

So desperately waiting for something exciting to happen, with all honesty it doesn't.

This is part of the 'Found Footage' Horror Genre, and it may have been better if this could have been buried and not found again.

The Nothing will scare you
shagee797710 February 2020
Clayton Thompson wrote, directed and stars as a recent college graduate. He decides to go alone in the woods and write a story. No disturbances or distractions is his goal. Strange occurrences begin happening and the solitude is Getting the better of him. Scary as hell in the tradition of Blair Witch project.

It's good
What-a-Punk12 February 2020
You've done a real good job here, sir. The movie is good, it feels real, it has soul in it - and that is why, nowadays, I prefer low budget horror over those big hollywood titles. This here has some class to it, some uniqueness, even though the story itself is not new. The atmosphere is set just right to lure you into the picture, to allow you to feel it through. It is scary and creepy, what makes it good, but unfortunately, it never peaks to something unbearably horrifying, which I believe, would've made it an excellent piece. I still watched it with pleasure and would recommend it to others. Thanks!

Pretty bad acting
karaokebowl29 February 2020
The only reason I gave this 4 stars is because some of the woods in the dark parts are scary. I suggest you start the film at 34 minutes and stop it at an hour at ten minutes.

It's Got A Very Unique Concept
casablancavic20 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
So, I watched this in full to the very end.

The producers and director and actors and screenwriters should be giving me an award for doing so.

here's the exciting parts 10 minutes in - nothing happens 32 minutes in - nothing happens and then he truns around and looks into the camera and then nothing happens

5 minutes later, as nothing is happening - the lead actor does nothing and then talks into the camera and well...as he's doing this...nothing happens - and then BAMMM...a whole bunch of nothing happens...

Now as nothing is happening - even more of nothing happens and then the big final scene of where nothing happens happens.

I wasn't prepared for that...I was expecting well....nothing - but then it just too intense where nothing happened...

You could tell how intense it all was as soon as nothing happened - because the actor looked into the camera and then did nothing exciting...

I can't wait for the sequels = where nothing happens in another series of movies.

The genius it took to come up with such creativity is well...genius.

More movies should be made like this - so that we can see brilliance in action.

Now I'm going to give away some spoilers.

1 - nothing happens 2 - nothing happens 3 - nothing happens

and then at the very end - there's a real strange twist that you never expected....just as he's doing sweet nothing...nothing happens

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did

Warning: Spoilers
Once again, people who gave this thing 7-8-10 stars must be paid to do so. This movie is just pretentious and boring. Man, I cringed so hard at the line "Tom Hanks did it for 5 years"... Really Clayton? In what universe you think that a 25 years old adult would say that line and take it seriously?

It tries to be philosophical but it misses SO hard. The actor is not even nearly good enough to carry a movie like this alone, so you start by actually hating the character and pretty much keep on that for the rest of the movie.

And they don't show ANYTHING not even a glimpse of what is happening in the dark.

Seriously, don't waste your time on this pretentious and utterly boring thing.

A brave exercise of cinema
fabani10 February 2020
If there is something that should be put at the top of the list of qualities of an independent movie, it is the courage to raise complex issues with minimum resources. The question of resources makes the filmmaker become a brave thinker and that is what Clayton Thompson shows. In my opinion, the filmmaker managed with success the tension in the plot throughout the film. I really enjoyed his descent into madness. Great job. Recommended movie.

Nicely done "moral of the story" film.
ursofullavit12 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I also don't get that 1 star review. I suspect the person didn't even WATCH the movie. Oh well, on to the review.

For the first minute or so, I was like "WT...?", because the guy just SAT there staring into the camera saying, NOTHING. After about a minute he blinks and says "Is too much silence a bad thing?". Then the movie moves into how he wants to make a film about being alone, and what it does to a person. He has a loving GF, and a very good friend, that are supportive of his efforts. You can tell from the get-go that the guy is a LITTLE off...and he gradually goes downhill during his stay in the woods.

So, the first 15-20 minutes I did a LOT of laughing (yes, it's SUPPOSED to be funny, and it is). Once he got into the woods, the funny parts were scarce. It has just enough "action" to keep you watching, as Clayton descends into "madness".

If you don't like SPOILERS, then PLEASE, read no further!

SPOILERS!!!!!!!

Clayton never HAD the emotional or mental stability to even DO his little project, and never SHOULD have done it. THAT'S the moral of the story. (At least that's the way that *I* see it).

Proving you don't need an Avengers like budget!
daylet905 May 2020
When it comes to Independent and lower budget movies, alot of prople push them away just because they don't have a $50million budget.

This movie was clearly made by a group of people who had an idea and went out and did it.

It shows how a persons mind acts when you have no one around for that long just your own thoughts in an unfamiliar place.

So this was actually a fun watch, definitely alot deeper than what is shows, really have to get in the mindset of the main character start to finish. did i laugh at the bad jokes? yes. did i get nervous at times? yes. did i ask myself what was about to happen? yes.

the group behind this wanted to create something deep and i do believe they achieved it. just the 1 star reviews are people going in expecting Endgame special effects and The hills have eyes violence.

like i said, they proved you do not need a high budget, A class actors, explosions and super CGI to create a movie.

watch it. it's worth it, very much so.

Quite an accomplishment
dschmeding19 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
"The nothing" is a simple little movie that proves that Indie Movies are not dead and how a simple idea can carry a movie if its followed by heart. This movie is obviously a project that was important to the director who wrote, directed and played the lead character of the story which is basically himself... Clayton. It looks like this is mostly a movie featuring him and his friends which is his girlfriend and his snarky best friend Hunter plus few shots with his father. Thats it and it basically carries an introduction that shows us Clayton and his thought and how he carries an odd idea to his friends... he wants to spend a week alone in the woods to fuel his creativity. Alone with his thoughts, nothing to distract him... in hopes to find what many artists found in solitude, depression and insanity. Everything leads up to this in documentary or found footage style snippets of Clayton filming himself or chatting with his friends. There is a lot of humour in the interactions in the first third of the movie and in how Clayton expresses his thoughts. Everything feels natural and the characters are all sympathetic or weirdly interesting... especially the cynical Hunter. After his girlfriend reluctantly drops Hunter off deep in the woods we are left with him, filming himself and following his streams of consciousness. Now what anyone would expect is some kind of Blair Witch movie coming out of this but t its core "The nothing" is a beautiful minimalist take om a descent into madness. There are some shots that visualised the disconnect from his surroundings perfeclty when Clayton sits in the darkness of the woods with just his flashlight on and turning them off.... and on ... and off again until the screen goes blank for quite a while. Its quite impressive how the movie manages to keep your attention with so little happening and basically just one person filming itself. When Clayton is left in the forest most of the humorous parts slowly disappear and the horror elements of noises in the darkness are thrown in. There is some Blair Witch style elements in this with an old cabin and creepy chairs and him running scared through a dark forest. Honestly those are the weak points... there was no need for that supernatural part with the obligatory "is it only in his mind" feeling behind it. Also the part where he has his food and water lost when animals get into his stash and he destroys his last contact to the world feel forced like ... well like in a bad horror movie.

But what is at this movies core is the depiction of a guy battling his inner demons and confronting the nothing in the hope of finding something and that plays quite well from beginning to end when the question is if Clayton is lost or if he simply lost himself step by step.

A great zero budget movie.

A bold visual essay on fear. IGNORE THE 1 STAR REVIEWS
richardwworkman21 February 2021
I don't have much love for the found footage format, it's usually barely watchable and self indulgent, poorly produced, cheap crap.

The Nothing begins as most found footage films do, with a nice, clear explanation of what the film is all about. Because we need that don't we, because we are all too stupid to work out what's going on, aren't we.

But The Nothing, although following this tried and tested route at first, chooses a slightly different path.

A man, Clayton, graduates, has a wonderful girlfriend and good friends but is suffering from a mental crisis. He chooses to confront this crisis by sitting alone in the woods.

To be honest I think this is a great idea and in my own way I have done something similar. I recognised the existential angst, the fear of failure driving Clayton to the middle of the woods.

However, what Clayton ends up finding in the woods is that the woods end up becoming his fears. The isolation and fear intensifies. The darkness becomes his sense of self and so what is he experiencing? Is there some out there or is it in his mind.

Yes there are inevitable comparisons to Blair Witch but I think this is vastly better. There is a deeper psychological edge to this. The Nothing is a journey into a kind of self-induced psychosis, an essay on fear and how fear works.

In the same way that other film makers have used the Horror genre to explore mental health, Clayton Thompson uses the found footage format to present a talking head performance within which he relentlessly dissects himself. He is his own mass murdering slasher.

I also liked the way this film leaves questions unanswered and retains a sense of mystery.

Lots of one star reviews for this and as usual they are way off the mark. A very bold piece of film making.

It's called subjective tastes, folks
ulyssus6 March 2020
Amazing to me that we somehow think our own subjective opinions on a film are the objective facts. The reaction to this film reveals only this: what you bring to the mirror gets reflected. The cleaner the mirror, the clearer the reflection.

The antagonist for Clayton's film is Silence, the protagonist is Ego. This sets the stage for a truly interesting, terrifying story which is going to be catnip for some and anthrax for others. Clayton if you're ever reading this, that's the nature of art, brother. Chin up, I sincerely applauded.

If my review resonated at all with your inner life, the film is highly recommended. If my review sounded like psychobabble, give the film a pass :).
