Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball series has been popular on the basic formula of featuring epic fights, lots of training, a gripping story, and some fan theories, that will get you hooked on the show. With rich storytelling and complex characters, featuring Saiyans and different life forms, often leading to interesting fan theories.
Broly in Dragon Ball Super: Broly
Toriyama-Sensei has given much thought to the creation of each of his characters, or else people would not have been addicted to the show for 38 long years. One of the mythic fan speculations of the show is the Genetic Mutation Theory revolves around the Saiyans. Ironically, this theory revolves not around Gohan but a new character, who made his way into the Dragon Ball canon in 2018. If the theory turns out to be true, then, he would surpass Kakarot and The Prince of All Saiyans with ease.

The release of the Dragon Ball Super manga changed a lot for the original Dragon Ball series by Akira Toriyama. Dragon Ball Super not only introduced some new aspects in the narrative, but it also gave a huge makeover to a lot of things from its prequel series. One of the biggest changes the series made was with the character Broly/Broli.
Broly – Dragon Ball Super
Broly was possibly the strongest Saiyan in the Dragon Ball Z franchise, but the biggest problem with the character was that he was non-canon. His appearance in the Z timeline did not feature any significant changes in the story. However, Dragon Ball Super decided to make Broly canon, and after his introduction in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, he became an important figure in the story.

When it comes to the legacy of Dragon Ball, canon plays a more major role than its characters. This is because even though there are so many Dragon Ball films, none of them are considered canon in the series’ universe, except Dragon Ball Super: Broly. In the series’ long run, Broly has made quite a few appearances in the series, but he became an official part of the franchise when his standalone film was released.
Broly in his Legendary Super Saiyan form
But when we talk about Dragon Ball Gt, the only series that was aired after Dbz ended its run became a hated non-canon series of the franchise. However, the show featured one of the coolest Super Saiyan transformations. Yes, the much hated Dragon Ball Gt featured SSJ4 transformation unlocked by Kakarot and The Prince of All Saiyans; and this form could make a return in Dragon Ball Super!

The main character of Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball, Goku, has gone through multiple power-ups over the years, but the most interesting one among them was the fusion technique. It allowed Goku to fuse with his supporting character, Vegeta, who is also a powerful Saiyan, giving them a combination of their overall abilities and strengths.
Fusion Dance
Goku and Vegeta can perform two types of fusion, which result in two different beings with extraordinary strength. The first one is Vegito, and the second one is Gogeta. While Vegito made an appearance during the fight against Super Buu, Gogeta was a non-canonical character for a long time, but ultimately he was introduced in Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
One of Toriyama’s interviews was published in Dragon Ball Daizenshuu 6: Movies & TV Specials, where he talked about the introduction of fusion in the series and how it started as a joke but...

Akira Toriyama’s magnum opus, Dragon Ball, has been entertaining fans for over 40 years. Over time, the series developed into a narrative that has been distributed into different sequels and spin-offs like Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, and the latest addition to the franchise, the upcoming Dragon Ball Daima.
Goku and Vegeta in Dragon Ball
However, the death of Toriyama has left a big question for Dragon Ball fans. The question is whether or not the series will continue after the death of its creator. Dragon Ball Super was midway into its story when Toriyama passed away and the manga since then has been on an indefinite hiatus.
But this is not the only problem for Dragon Ball fans. The Dragon Ball series has been going on for so long, and along the way, it has introduced a number of great storylines and characters, but it has also left...

Created by Akira Toriyama, The Dragon Ball manga and anime series has overarched in its popularity, thanks to its well-written characters, gripping storylines, and a long list of antagonists that keeps the series interesting. The saga is now in its Superhero Arc, which focuses on Piccolo and our beloved Gohan-san, as Kakarot and Vegeta are off-planet focusing on getting stronger.

Toriyama-Sensei focused on presenting a more intrinsic, closed-loop story than the usual dynamic, and typical storyline that the franchise is usually known for. However, it looks like the mangaka artist’s vision had failed as larger-than-life visuals and a longer screen time of their favorite characters, that is Son-Goku and Vegeta were something they needed. To make things worse for Akira Toriyama, he noticed a grave slip-up in the title of the film which went unnoticed by everyone on the team.

There are so many directions that a Spy x Family could pursue. The ongoing anime has a deeply versatile story structure that allows it to indulge in diverse missions so that the series always feels fresh. Accordingly, it’s seriously surprising to see Code: White function as a covert cooking anime movie.
It’s the type of story that audiences would expect to see in a Food Wars! or Toriko feature film, but not Spy x Family. It’s also an ambitious approach to Spy x Family’s first movie that hedges its bets and is too cautious to disrupt the status quo. Code: White is still rich in classic Spy x Family elements, even if it amounts to an empty meal.

Illustrator of the Dragon Ball Super manga series Toyotarou took to his Twitter account to disclose a behind-the-scenes detail regarding the final panel of chapter 103 of the manga.
According to Toyotarou, his original draft of the chapter featured everyone simply turning their backs and departing. However, the last revision by the series’ creator, Akira Toriyama, introduced a significant change.
Original draft by Toyotarou
Toriyama requested that the character of Piccolo be shown offering a farewell to Pan’s kindergarten teacher.
However, Toyotarou shared that he only received the news of Toriyama’s passing after submitting the draft. Reflecting on this sequence of events, Toyotarou expressed that while he didn’t draw Piccolo with the intention of paying tribute to Toriyama, he couldn’t help but find additional layers of meaning in the final panel.
“After submitting the draft, I heard the news of the passing.
So, I didn’t draw Piccolo with that intention.

Anime scored again at the box office last weekend, and that’s not just counting the anime-influenced “Creed III.” Crunchyroll’s “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba — To the Swordsmith Village” earned $10.1 million in its domestic debut. Its initial success is another example of how anime has become a reliable and bankable genre in times of theatrical feast and multiplex famine.
In pre-covid times, such specialty films commanding relatively modest box office would be curiosities alongside tentpoles and conventional studio programmers, with a mere appearance in the weekend top 10 becoming noteworthy in and of itself. But now, out-of-the-ordinary big-screen experiences are finding favor with audiences, with exhibitors gratefully turning to anything with a loyal fan base they can count on to show up at theaters.

This post contains spoilers for "One Piece Film Red."
"One Piece Film Red" is filled with explosive and mind-bending moments that not only features stunning animation and fun world-building but also rewards viewers who have watched or read the series from the beginning. Eiichiro Oda himself said that "One Piece" was nearing its end, and although he's said that several times before, the events and character interactions up to this point all seem to indicate that it may actually be true this time. That's especially the case with "One Piece Film Red," which heavily features one of the most popular characters in the series who has, throughout 1,000 plus episodes of anime, essentially only appeared three times.
I am, of course, talking about the legendary pirate Red-Haired Shanks, Captain of the Red-Haired Pirates, and the man who gave Luffy his signature straw hat, which has now become symbolic of everything "One Piece" related.

Expectations for this weekend were low, but it still feels like a disappointment as it dropped 34 from last weekend and became the year’s third lowest grossing at the box office. Despite three wide releases, the overall box office dropped to 52.1 million, making this the worst weekend since January and the first weekend since May 2021 where no film grossed over 10 million. The newcomers failed to spark and the top film from last weekend took a massive plunge in the final weekend of August, and while the month outperformed August 2021 (which had a 418 million cume compared to this month’s 451 million with still a few days to go), September may bring us to box-office lows we haven’t seen since the late May 2021 summer kickoff.
The Invitation took the top spot this weekend with 7 million from 3,114 locations, the lowest first place debut since Nobody in March 2021 (6.8 million). By pre-pandemic accounts, it...

We’ve had some bad weekends this year, but this past weekend took the cake with the worst showing for the Top 10 since late January. The big difference with this weekend’s box office is that there were actually three new wide releases, including one from an Oscar-winning filmmaker.
The #1 movie of the weekend was Sony/Screen Gems’ vampire thriller “The Invitation,” starring Nathalie Emmanuel (“Game of Thrones”) and Thomas Doherty (“Gossip Girl”), which was released into 3,114 theaters on Friday with no early reviews. It ended up taking in 775,000 in Thursday previews and 2.6 million on Friday, which allowed it to take the lead over the weekend with an estimated 7 million. Directed by Jessica M. Thompson, the movie did eventually see reviews that weren’t particularly kind, only achieving a 26 rating on Rotten Tomatoes (about half its Audience Score). That didn’t make much of a difference, since more moviegoers were...

The Invitation lead the box office this weekend with a lackluster 7 Million. No doubt the studio thought making this one PG13 would help sell tickets to the under 18 crowd, however I do believe that rating actually hurt it as anyone over 18 just wasn’t interested in venturing out to theaters for watered down horror. Making matters even worse, the film’s C cinemascore means that the people that did pay to see it in theaters didn’t really like it which doesn’t bode well for its longevity at the big office.
Coming in second place is the Brad Pitt action comedy Bullet Train with an estimated 5.6 Million. Personally I am glad to see this film have solid legs at the box office as it was a highly entertaining confined action film with great acting across the board. Even the musician Bad Bunny gave a solid performance which gives me...

After a 19 increase in the box office last weekend, which was the first upswing after five weeks of decline, the numbers will drop again this weekend which will likely be the lowest grossing of the past six months. It’s likely that no film will pass 10 million, a statistic we haven’t seen since May 2021, but unfortunately may see a few more times over the next month and a half. There are three new wide releases this weekend, all with potential, but none are likely to draw a huge audience as the box office drought continues.
Sony’s vampire film The Invitation will be the biggest of the new releases and could beat out the holdovers to hit number one, and it also has the largest launch with 3,000 theaters. Nathalie Emmanuel stars as a young American woman who discovers a long-lost relative in England through a DNA test. He invites...

This is one of those weekends that is fairly hard to predict. It features three new releases with little fanfare and a number one movie from last week with a dedicated fanbase that already saw it!
When it comes to new releases, Sony Pictures PG13 horror film The Invitation stands the best chance at taking the top spot. I mention the rating because I actually think that hurts its box office potential. The trailers for this one looked entertaining, reminding me a bit of the R rated Ready or Not from 2019. Whereas that film used its R rating to bloody perfection in crafting an extremely unique tale of murder and mayhem, The Invitation’s PG13 has softened my expectations for the film. I don’t see this one making it to double digits in its opening and by doing so, breaking a 65 week run of at least one film earning over 10 Million.

As someone born in 1994, Dragon Ball was one of the TV programs that accompanied me throughout my childhood, impacting my life – and that of many children and teenagers worldwide – in an unforgettable manner. No other television offerings came close to watching the epic adventures of Goku and the Z fighters. It's impossible to describe the tremendous happiness fans felt when Dragon Ball Super was announced as a continuation of the anime – a series that improved exponentially, arc after arc. Then came Dragon Ball Super: Broly in 2018 - by far the best movie in the franchise. Therefore, expectations were very high for the latest Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, so it hurts to write that I left unsatisfyingly unfulfilled. ›››

After five weekends in a row of box-office decline and a gloomy season ahead, this weekend saw a bit of an upswing, led by the latest entry in the hugely popular anime franchise Dragon Ball. The overall box office came in at 72.5 million, up 8.2 million from last weekend, and while this weekend sits among the lowest grossing in recent pre-pandemic years, it was still above expectations and may be the best weekend we see for the next eight weeks.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero came in first with a prediction-beating 20.1 million, more than doubling the opening of its predecessor Dragon Ball Super: Broly (9.8 million) in 2018. Super Hero’s opening is a frontloaded affair, with more than half of the gross coming from Thursday previews and Friday, but it’s hardly something to be let down by given the weekend numbers. Super Hero even broke the nearly 33-year-long dry spell with...

The big story for this weekend will be that when you have a film with a niche audience you don’t need to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on marketing to get that audience to show up. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero easily landed in first place with an estimated 20.1 million, including 3.4 Million in IMAX tickets alone making it their highest grossing anime opening ever. This is a huge win for the animation studio Crunchyroll as it proves they are a studio that truly understands their audience. Of course these Dragon Ball films are generally front loaded with their fans rushing out to see it as soon as possible and generally have steep drop offs the following week with the previous film in the series – Dragon Ball Super: Broly- posting a nearly 70 decline in its second weekend. At any rate, it definitely wasn’t as much of a...

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero opened to an impressive 20.1 million-plus at the North American box office, easily enough to win the weekend. That number could climb higher once Sunday grosses are tallied.
Crunchyroll, which is distributing the Japanese movie in North America, says the sequel is scoring the best global opening ever for an anime film. Overseas, the film opened to 12 million from 32 markets, including 11.2 million from markets handled by Sony Pictures International.
Directed by Tetsuro Kodama from a story by series creator Akira Toriyama, Dragon Ball Super 2 is the 21st feature film in the long-running Dragon Ball universe and a sequel to 2018’s Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The CGI-animated martial arts fantasy, produced by Toei Animation, is playing in more than 3,100 cinemas in North America, including 324 IMAX locations that contributed a hefty 3.4 million, and in more than 100 countries overall.

Just as it looked like the summer movie season was winding down without any well-loved franchises in sight, “Dragon Ball” has come to town.
“Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” looks to top domestic box office charts for the weekend after scoring 10.7 million on its opening day. The Crunchyroll release is projecting a 20 million opening from 3,007 locations, which marks the widest release ever for the distributor. It’s also the widest release ever for an anime film, which includes a massive footprint in premium format auditoriums like Imax, 4Dx and Dolby Cinemas.
The debut marks a notable uptick from the 9.8 million domestic opening scored by 2018’s “Dragon Ball Super: Broly,” the preceding entry in the saga. It’s also a comparable figure to the 18 million debut enjoyed by Funimation’s “Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie” in March of this year. Both comparisons illustrate how anime features have taken on a sizable...

It’s not easy for a franchise to maintain a passionate audience for nearly four decades, and yet there’s no end in sight for Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball. There are hundreds of hours of entertainment between the many Dragon Ball anime, manga, video games and more, but the series’ feature film installments frequently tell stories that are too big to contain in the standard anime. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero picks up after the events of 2018’s Dragon Ball Super: Broly, but turns to the original series’ roots when it comes to this new source of conflict. The Red Ribbon Army have a contentious history with Goku, but due to certain events their defeat falls on Piccolo, who also figures out how to reignite Gohan’s killer instinct. With no major movies on the horizon, the summer slowdown has continued at the box office. Universal’s action movie “Beast,” starring Idris Elba,” picked up just 925,000 in Thursday previews after launching in 2,900 theaters. It will expand to 3,743 locations on Friday.
The survival thriller is expected to bring in 10 million in its opening weekend, and the film cost 36 million to produce, not to mention more to promote. Internationally, “Beast” has already earned 4.9 million.
Elba plays a father who travels to South Africa with his two daughters, and while in the savannah he faces the titular predator in “Beast” — a rogue, ferocious lion. The cast includes Sharlto Copley, Iyana Halley and Leah Jeffries.
Domestically, “Beast” looks like it’ll be tamed by the anime movie “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero,” the latest feature in the long-running and popular “Dragon Ball” series. Released by Crunchyroll, which specializes in Japanese anime films and TV series,...

After a top seven made up entirely of holdovers last weekend, the box office gets some new blood this weekend with the top spots likely to be held by Beast and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, both of which could open in the double digits. These releases may not bring a boost to the overall box office, which dropped to 65.4 million last weekend, the lowest since February and worse than any pre-pandemic weekend since 2001. However, the two newcomers may be able to keep the numbers afloat after five weekends of decline, with the box office dropping by 28.9 last weekend.

It’s that time of year again, the time when the big summer blockbusters have been out for a while and the fall prestige films are still a few months away. It is a time typically referred to as “the dumping ground,” when studios release films with targeted audiences or ones they simply don’t think will light the box office on fire.
This weekend sees two new movies hitting our local multiplex: The Idris Elba starring Beast about a family in the African wilderness hunted by a rogue Lion and the animated follow up Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.
Tracking on both films have them in the 10-15 Million range, however one can look at the previous Dragon Ball film: Dragon Ball Super: Broly, released over the MLK Holiday Weekend in 2019 and pulling in a surprising 22.3 Million over its first five days of release, to see that these films...

After one of the worst weekends at the box office since February, many have been ready to give up on the summer of 2022, but never fear. There’s still a few hopes that things will pick up before Labor Day — but not that much hope, really. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
On Friday, Universal releases “Beast,” a killer lion thriller starring Idris Elba and Sharlto Copley that’s directed by Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur (“Everest”). In the movie, Elba plays the father of two teen daughters who all go on an African safari only to encounter the beast of the title, a rogue lion with deadly intentions.
It seems like a great high-concept creature thriller ala 2019’s “Crawl,” which opened with 12 million in July and actually held up well due to word-of-mouth. It’s hard to tell whether Elba’s considerable star power might be in play,...

“Beast,” a survival thriller starring Idris Elba, is expected to debut to 10 million over the weekend. But those ticket sales likely won’t be enough to lead domestic box office charts.
Instead, the Universal Pictures release looks to be defeated by “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero,” a manga adaptation from Crunchyroll, a company that specializes in Japanese anime movies and television. The PG-13 “Super Hero” is targeting 13 million to 15 million in its opening weekend as it touches down in 3,900 North American theaters. It marks the widest release ever for Crunchyroll.
Anime films have been increasingly popular in the United States, and Crunchyroll, which is mostly owned by Sony Pictures, has been at the forefront. Two wide studio releases will hopefully prevent this summer from reaching another low at the box office after last weekend’s 67.3M. If there’s one movie that’s going to pull ahead, sources are betting on Crunchyroll’s Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. That distributor has proven in a short amount of time that they can draw a great deal of anime fans in a Friday through Sunday span. The Tetsuro Kodama directed animation movie is looking at anywhere from 12M-15M, ahead of Universal’s genre lion-stalking film, Beast, starring Idris Elba; that pic hoping for at least double digits.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, booked in around 3,940 theaters, will be armed with all premium ticket formats, i.e. 4Dx, Imax, Dolby and D-box, and will kick off showtimes at 5Pm on Thursday. The previous movie, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, over a 6-day MLK holiday stretch in 2019 debuted to 22.3M.

The immensely popular franchise is back with a cast of brightly coloured characters in a world of bad guys with outrageous quiffs
A big hit domestically where the whole Dragon Ball Super manga book/TV series/movie franchise is immensely popular – but beyond Japan and its near neighbours this feature, the second after Dragon Ball Super: Broly, will appeal mainly to hardcore fans. There’s a good chance you know more about “Dragon Ball” than you think you do. Whether through memes or references to terms like “Super Saiyan,” “Kamehameha” and “It’s over 9,000,” the 38-year-old franchise has achieved global popularity even as it’s remained something of a niche outside its native Japan. With 42 manga volumes, several animated series (including “Dragon Ball Z”), theme-park attractions, video games, an ill-fated live-action adaptation and billions of dollars in merchandising revenue, the series isn’t going anywhere soon.
