Stick it out
Jackbv12317 November 2019
This is not a Christmas movie like all the others, especially not like the Hallmark ones.

If you don't stick it out til the end, or at least through most of it, you might be tempted to think this movie is about bashing Christians for their hate and hypocrisy. There is certainly plenty of hypocritical hate where there should be love. But about half way through we start to see that not everyone is hatefully judgemental. The movie is a story about how difficult family can be and working through that. It doesn't have all the pie-eyed optimism. It also doesn't have a lot of the traditional tropes like Santa, sleigh rides, caroling, and so forth. It has a few, but mostly incidental.

The acting is real and therefore some of the characters are rough at times rather than ideal. The chemistry between Tracie and Rick is real also - both good moments and bad. The couple has two young daughters that add a little of that element, but they aren't as central as they would be in a Hallmark movie.

The movie is pretty good, but it is not my cup of tea. I like my Christmas movies a little kinder and gentler.

New to the list of Christmas movies!!
mooveefan-8718821 November 2019
I have been watching hokey Christmas movies all day and this is by far my favorite. Christmas movies are what they are. For the most part, they aren't going to win any Oscars, but if a movie can make me laugh, cry and yeah, get mad then wrap it all up in a bow by the end, well then I'm a happy camper.

A festive rekindling
TheLittleSongbird17 November 2020
Have been on a roll watching Christmas films every now and again for a while. Especially the output of Hallmark and Lifetime. It has been an interesting experience, but also a very uneven one and at times frustratingly so. 'Every Other Holiday' did sound good on paper and while some of the synopsis sounded familiar, especially early on, it sounded as if the film was trying to not be too conventional. Plus with that many liked it, there was no chance of missing it.

'Every Other Holiday' didn't disappoint. As far as all the Christmas films seen as part of my Christmas films go, it is among the best and namely because it was one of the few recently seen ones that had emotional impact and didn't try to stick too much to conventions. 'Every Other Holiday' is not a masterpiece and it won't be one of my favourites any time soon, but of the Christmas films seen in the past few weeks it is by far the best. This is coming from a genuine reviewer by the way with a diverse film and television taste, not a bot or paid account.

It may have some slow stretches at times and ends on a little too pat a note.

On the other hand, 'Every Other Holiday' looks attractive, especially the scenery, and the music has a pleasant and nostalgic quality that doesn't become overdone, over-emphasised or too syrupy. The direction was sympathetic but still gave the film momentum when necessary.

The dialogue is heartfelt, thoughtful and flows well without being self-indulgent or too flowery. The story is charming and moving, but instead of going down the cheesy and sugary sweet route that a lot of Christmas films in recent years do it takes a grittier and more serious turn. Without being overly-serious that it becomes dreary, without it getting preachy and without the shift being jarring. The charm and pathos, as well as heartfelt warmth, were still there even in these stretches while neither go into overload.

So refreshing too in 'Every Other Holiday' to have characters that felt like real people and ones that one gets behind in their trials and tribulations. Something not commonly found in recent years Christmas films. The characters have a very natural and sincere chemistry and the acting is very good. Dee Wallace is the most familiar name to me, and she does a great job, but the two leads are no slouches either.

Concluding, very good. 8/10

A great surprise. Because it propose the fair perspective about family, youth, childhood, past, religion and job of battetender, sacrifice, fears and love. And, sure, about Christmas. Touching, dramatic, profound honest, it has the virtue to explore in inspired manner very sensitive subjects, out of comfortable formula of manicheism, out of cheesy solutions or pink options for joy of holly day And it works more than well. One of films who you feel is the precise definition of this film , with Hallmark end, off course, but putting the viewer front to dilemmas, crisis, noble intentions more than familiar in his every day life. . And this is the great virtue, an useful one. And the acting, off cours, no doubts, it is just the deserved one from entire cast.

A bit hard to take, but worth it.

A Holiday Wish Come True/Every Other Holiday (2018) -

For a priest's wife, Dee Wallace as Mimi and most of the rest of her family needed to re-read the bit in the Bible about forgiveness and the one without sin casting the first stone. I've probably misquoted, because I've never read it, but then I've never used a book to defend my own actions either.

And Ed played by Glenn Morshower wasn't exactly the best Preacher for impromptu prayers, as he stumbled over the simplest of sentiments. He also wasn't the strongest man of the house, ceding to his wife's honorary attitude, which had kept his daughter and her family away, without stepping in, but at least his heart was in the right place, unlike his Wife and he did what was right in the end.

And let's not forget that Dee wasn't very hospitable towards 'E. T.' (1982) either.

Despite the fact it was the season of the birth of our Lord and Saviour, the whole household was actually lacking in love AND what would traditionally be classed as a Christian attitude.

Mimi was really quite unbearable for me and wound me up inside. If I had been her visiting daughter Tracie (Schuyler Fisk) I would have taken my kids and my ex back to the city after five minutes with her, Mother or not. The whole atmosphere of the house was toxic for all involved.

Mimi's character alone would usually be enough to make me switch off a film like this, because I can't stand hypocrisy, which she was drenched in and I tend to steer clear of the religious, Bible bashing films too, regardless of what preference the producers seem to be erring towards, but there was something about this one that kept me watching. It might have been the leading man David Clayton Rogers, playing Rick, who was quite pleasant to look at, but I thought that there was something else too.

I did stick with it, despite the religion in it, because it had lulled me in with the first half an hour of regular story and then Bam! It hit hard with the Bible quotes and a very unchristian way of treating guests, but it wasn't in the standard preachy way that always aggravates me.

And right from the start I also found myself drawn to and liking the character of Rick. I could easily sympathise with him, which was tougher to do with Tracie, who was a bit hard faced and seemed to feel sorry for herself a bit too much.

He reminded me of Paul Rudd and I liked his rough, but kindhearted nature and his sense of fun, but also his sweet face.

She was obviously the problem, as a result of her issues with her Mum. Perhaps she was praying that she would never turn out like her and that's why she couldn't let herself love Rick?

I always seem to like a film that rekindles an old love, as much as I enjoy the new romances. Perhaps it gives me hope that love can still be found even after it's lost, not that I would want any of my exes back, except maybe one. It's just nice to know that it might be possible and that love can be found later in life too.

Overall it definitely wasn't a cheery film, there was minimal comedy in it and a lot of misery and upset. However it did contain a lot of heart and good intentions to warm the soul for the season, as well as a bit more depth than some of the usual Hallmark offerings.

If you can put up with Mimi, the story was worthwhile.

6.50/10.

A Christmas Movie With More Than A Hint Of Realism. 1-2-Watch.
P3n-E-W1s39 December 2022
Greetings, salutations, and a seasonal welcome to all you movie aficionados. Here are my considerations and recommendation for A Holiday Wish Come True.

Story: 1.50/2 - Direction and Pace: 2.50/4 - Performances: 1.50/2 - Enjoyment: 1.50/2

Total 7/10

The realistic approach the writers adopted makes this tale of awakening more potent than the usual Christmas fayre. Yes, it's still a Christmas Romance, though it's a different colour, this one is a shade of grey. Tracie and Rick are in love and have two beautiful and selfless daughters, Harper and Ava. The trouble is they're separated and, like Christmases past, they're doing the annual Chrimbo kiddie-shuffle between parental homes. However, the girls have other ideas. They only have one wish and only want one present between them this year. Their dream is to be a family for one more time; and Christmas at Grandma and Grandpa's house. For Rick, it's going to be a trial by fire. Being a failed musician who spent many nights away from his family, the in-laws have a critical dislike and distrust of him. Can he weather the storm to make his girls happy? For Tracie, it's going to be a journey of realisation. This season she's going to see her mother and sisters in a new, slightly colder light as truths get revealed. In this household, nobody's getting off lightly this Christmastime. And even though the writers keep the storytelling light, they still package some emotional events into this picture. The director opts to keep things simple and doesn't overcook the heartwarming atmosphere. It's there, but it's subtle - and more potent for its subtleness. The scene where Tracie listens to her mother praying with her grandkids is excellent; it's warming, though it possesses a melancholy twinge. The performers are superb in their roles, I especially liked Dee Wallace as Grandma Mimi and Schuyler Fisk as Tracie. Glen Morshower gives a touchingly poignant portrayal of Pastor Grandpa Ed.

I wholeheartedly recommend A Holiday Wish Come True, AKA Every Other Holiday. It's not a weepie but it should tug at your heart because you might relate to some characters, which is an unusually strange thing to say about a Christmas flick. Grab the duvet, a mug of hot chocolate, and a loved one, then snuggle up and enjoy.

Please check out my HO! HO! HO! Christmas Belles list to see where I ranked the movie.

Take Care, Stay Well, And Best Wishes For A Merry Christmas.

My new favorite tv movie
samantha-shankle21 December 2018
I am one of those who records and watches hundreds of hallmark movies and Christmas movies. I had not really watched Lifetime in a really long time but stumbled across their holiday line up. The plot read a little different from most so I recorded it. To my surprise they hit the mark with this movie. It has just the right amount of everything you look for and the acting was good. Just the right amount of laughter, drama, romance, God, teachable moments and music. Very genuine believable characters. Love this movie!

Thumbs way down!!
Marynewcomb201325 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
First off, these "positive" reviews for this movie are made by ones that have only reviewed this movie or one other & it shows they have been members for years!! That tells you these are not pure, actual real viewers reviews!! These are bought reviews from the people involved with this farce of a movie!! To this mess called a movie. This has been done to death in other types of movies outside of Christmas movies!! Starts off with the couple no longer together. They go for Christmas to the girls parents house for Christmas. The Bible thumping mother can't stand the girls man, so she try's to get the girl involved with another man!! She does everything she can to keep these two from getting back together!! Then the girl lets her mom have it for interfering as she always did!! Then the girl leaves!! Then the other siblings open up to mom, finally!! Then the mother has an "eye opening" revelation!!! After that, everyone makes up and let's love in!! Another thing wrong with this is it's foc on being politically correct!! That's why Hallmark movies are the best Christmas movies & made for TV movies in general!! They focus on the story & getting the right actors in those roles!! They don't once think, we have to be politically correct & where can we throw this in or that in or this person in or that person!! When making a good movie, you do the story and get the right people!! You don't think of political correctness!! So no, I do not recommend anyone seeing this!!

Christmas Movie Guru

Warning: Spoilers
My husband and I watch all the Hallmark and Lifetime movies - we normally feel that we can write them or at least guess the dialogue: ). However, this movie - while sometimes formulaic - was so well written and the key actors had such chemistry that it truly felt true. We loved the movie and the writing in particular. The scene with the Dad/Pastor on Christmas Eve was a tear-jerker.

Watch this movie.

I loved it!

Warning: Spoilers
I love watching the Christmas Hallmark and Lifetime movies but some of them are pretty similar or predictable. I have never left a review for one before either but I couldn't resist leaving one after watching this tonight. I replayed like half the movie because I loved it so much. The sermon at the Christmas Eve service, and then the song that was sung at the end of the movie were tear jerkers. I definitely will be watching it again and I don't say that about very many movies (I rarely watch a movie or read a book more than once lol). I'm not sure why another reviewer only gave this one star, it is definitely more deserving than that - and I am definitely not a paid reviewer - I just really liked the movie.

The only 2 things I was like HUH? was when she put her kids to bed on Christmas Eve and showed up at the bar and I was like "who is watching her kids because they didn't show a babysitter showing up" lol. The other thing was the kids were not in car seats/booster seats and the younger one definitely wasn't big enough to be without at least a booster seat. Besides those 2 things tho I really enjoyed this movie and I will be saving it on my dvr to watch again.

Watch this one Every Holiday
gehewe28 February 2019
This movie was very well done. We have four main characters. The divorced parents Tracie and Rick and her parents Ed the pastor and Mimi. Dee Wallace who played Mimi was fantastic. She had just the right amount of nasty. I do not think it would have worked if we had the traditional nice mom like Susan Hogan playing the part. Dee Wallace was the mom on ET many years ago. The pastor was also excellent with some great practical dialogue with Rick which really promoted the story. He was excellent and played the part just like Gerald McRaney would have. Well written dialogue with some bible verses well done like when Rick said "I recall the Lord turned water into wine" when Mimi criticized his former drinking and a comeback "the bible says not to be drunk" by Mimi. I thought it was very well done. Great story- enjoy.

For once a Christmas movie where you care about the people in it, and the problems they're having. The acting was great, and the story even got me a little teary eyed. This movie is a little gem!

I was so surprised when I first saw this movie last year. It was probably one of my favorite holiday movies EVER! It caught me by surprise and was filled with so much heart and soul. Lifetime really has a winner here! Lifetime needs to make more like this one, Hallmark should follow suit.

I DID find it interesting, however, that Reese Witherspoon's niece's name was misspelled in the opening credits, lol! Abby James "Whitherspoon." Really??? That's just plain sloppy and ridiculous. (Insert eye roll here!) But the movie itself was heartwarming and had a lot of great actors. I absolutely loved it!

What a lovely Family/Christmas Movie
oksenditme17 April 2021
I didn't think I would like it. It has long intro. But oh my - a tearjerker for me.

I've watched it twice already and I'm sure I'll be doing it again. Will certainly buy the movie when it is no longer free (free on Hulu at this time)
