This movie kept me wondering what was going to happen. It was a nice pace. I also think it was very realistic. Definitely worth the watch.

Solid
A solid entry to the suspense , psychological, horror found footage genre. Personally thought there was seeds planted earlier in the film that could of took it down a different route, which may of improved the over all movie and mystery. But the ever changing conflict and complex relationship on a tight rope pulling between love and hate is really the core of the movie and where it stands out, it's well enough acted to be convincing and it chugs along at a nice pace to keep you engaged There is movies out there with similar concepts done better, perhaps not in this style, but I well recommend this movie nonetheless.

Nice little potboiler with great direction and interesting performances. With all the choices and platforms out there now its a nice little rush when i come across something that grabs my attention and holds it. Id love to see more from this director. Give it a watch, it really pays off!

Starts off promising. Then gets tortuously monotonous.
Otkon14 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
For basically a two-person stage play it was well-acted if not unpleasantly so. And that is entirely my whole issue with it: both characters were unsympathetic from the beginning.

And I kept wondering the whole time if the mother was indeed the paranoid psychotic overreacting to a stereotypical teenager's angst-ridden and nihilistic flirtations with rebellious behavior. And it was not hard to posit that she was the one who was going to snap at some point and reveal herself as the actual threat, especially when her mantra is "the boy who cries wolf gets eaten by the wolf". The backstory involving the uncle reinforced the idea that she was no angel, victim or survivor. That negated any impact from the "twist", which the second half of the movie slogged its way to.

Also Parma looks nothing like sunny California. So that created a lot of disbelief in a premise that so badly needed the viewer on board.

Yes, it had good ideas. The surveillance footage aspect worked. The mother-son dynamic hit a little close-to-home for this watcher. The film had the ability to create some uneasy tension. But it seemed quite one-note over its entirety. And that tone was distressingly off.

Well done psycho thriller

I was hooked by the concept and the movie didn't disappoint. Love the found footage element, a device used very effectively. Well done!

Crazies..Spoilers
ericak-0455211 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
There were some good things about this movie. I thought the son was a great example of a pschopath. Creepy. Mom was annoying as hell. But a true demonstration of a truly dysfunctional family. Mom couldn't be a good parent because she was so focused on the past. Son was a victim of bad parenting and inherited family flaws. What bothered me the most though and made what could have been a 7, a 5, was the ending. The video she watches that he made...was that supposed to make us go "oh shoot..she shouldn't have killed him. He was just kidding!" No! He was still a psychopath! What kid plays a 'joke' like that on a parent and expects things to be shrugged off. Maybe I missed the point, but the message I got was they both would have been better off checked into a psych ward. Which is probably where she's headed next if the movie was 20 minutes longer...

Disturbing Fun
jbmaughon27 July 2020
Mothers of Monsters is a super creepy psychological thriller about a mother that believes she is raising a psychopath. M.O.M. delivers on so many levels. Great performances by the cast and a great script. This movie was so disturbing. I can't recommend it enough.

A Fun Ride

Pretty good movie that leaves you guessing all the way til the end. Definitely worth the watch. Wasn't expecting much, but got a lot more. Didn't add much to the genre, but kept me very entertained throughout. I'd give it a shot.

Don't Listen to the reviews - They're fake
cbkilgus11 April 2020
I just finished watching this on Amazon and decided to look up the reviews on IMDB. And I was quite surprised to see so many positive reviews for such a boring movie. Of course, movies are subjective, but I still found this odd. But just as I suspected, all the high reviews were left by people who only reviewed this movie or one other movie. It's very obvious they have a bias towards this movie whether they worked on the film or knew someone who did, but their reviews are not genuine. The two lowest ratings were by posters who appear to be legit since they have reviewed many other titles. So yeah, I actually took the time to make an account to give others a heads up.

As for the movie itself. Like I said, boring. The whole staring at the camera at the end was lame. It had that artsy fartsy, trying to be edgy vibe. But no knock on the director. I'm a big fan of Ghosts of Sheperdstown & Fact or Faked: Paranormal files. Maybe that's your calling, the paranormal.

Brilliant
tdwillis-2627316 November 2021
This film really got to me. As a 54 year old grandmother with 5 generations living in my family at one time, the state of our nation/world is a constant topic. This is one of the very few movies I have seen that attempts to address a parents perspective of having a very bright but difficult and troubled teenager.

The movie concentrates on the aftermath of a relationship between a mother and son, and only gives a very brief but very basic nod towards real life tragedies and struggles that make this subject so complex.

I am not usually a fan of found footage movies, but the subject of this film made this type of film making (technology) it's own role.

I have to disagree with the one reviewer who mentioned the actor portraying the teenage son average and the actress playing the mother good. Teenagers are often "acting" as they are learning who they are and i thought he was brilliant. The mother had a much more difficult role as she was portraying authentic fears and frustrations of motherhood.

It was good to see Ed Asner in a cameo and as usual he was super.

If you Like or dislike this movie, at least it creates an environment to discuss this topic and in my opinion that in itself makes this movie brilliant.

Passes the time
lizshotter15 March 2020
I like completely understand what the writers and actors were trying to portray, and initially they succeed. It was intriguing at first but unfortunately it collapsed under it's own weight, until both actors are left hamming it up and overacting towards the end, and it resembles a soap opera. This will obviously be compared to we need to talk about Kevin, which was a searing and exquisitely executed film about troubled teens and their parents. As a result this ends up looking like a copy of a copy of a copy. There were glaring inconsistencies in the characters behaviours, and although were supposed to be questioning if the kid is capable of murder or not, I found his "teen speak" ("snooze fest" "ain't gonna fly") embarrassing, as teenagers don't talk like that, and his portrayal of a "dangerous" teenager laughable and distracting. I've given it 6 because the production and editing were pretty good for a budget movie.

What A Snoozefest..
Mehki_Girl23 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
.. to quote the protagonist. This should have been a short because about halfway through I kept pausing to see how much time was left to endure this and get to the end already.

You're initially interested because who isn't interested in pyschopathy in a kid? At first you watch because you're trying to figure out which one is the pyschopath.

The son was obnoxious and unlovable and frankly I kept hoping she'd knock him off or just pack up and leave and go have a life of her own.

But the acting is bad. Looking at someone staring into a camera gets old fast. None of the characters are likable or even relatable.

This could have been so much better because there are real parents with real kids that they fear and are in fear for. This was blah.

The ending answers nothing.

What's up with her hands?

Was the son psychopath?

Or was mom?

Did she really tell Jerry to do it?

What difference did it make who the baby was in the photograph?

See this movie!
willkostick18 March 2020
This is a really good movie with two excellent lead actors. For those who have grown tired of the found footage trope, don't let that discourage you from watching m.o.m.! The only warning I would give is that there is some imagery and content that would be disturbing to some viewers, though I wasn't particularly put off by it. Definite recommend!!

Whiny child raised by incompetent mom, no surprises at all.
ashtonkrywalski24 April 2020
Pretty basic outcome, a "know it all" mom seems to be able to see all the indicators that her son is terrible and no one else can see it. She's also to naive to stop him so basically the movie is about her achieving nothing and somehow it's supposed to be a guide for other moms I guess on how to do nothing.

So I randomly? found this movie on the Tubi streaming app. This movie takes sometime to build up but don't stray away from it, there was never a boring moment. Trust me when I say it has such an intriging storyline and has a very raw feel to the entire film. I really enjoyed watching the film the producers did a great job on this indie-esque film, definitely has cult classic portential.

Interesting but it drags
lucashuntington21 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a solid 5/10. It's not awful and it's not amazing. The acting was actually excellent. But neither of the characters are likeable and the entire movie is about them. Some of the scenes also go on for way too long, and I had to start skipping forward toward the end. Despite that, it mostly kept my attention, and the story itself is quite interesting. They could have left out the last video at the end, which the song left for his mom. He totally still deserved to die.

Well acted, intense and captivating
JCanni6823 May 2020
A tense, engrossing thriller, I was pleasantly entertained with this story that felt real and genuinely disturbing. It moves forward at a good pace with plenty of twists and reveals that kept me captivated. Parents especially will find it particularly relatable and frightening, and it provides some food for thought on parenting, abuse and trauma. The film certainly isn't for the faint of heart, but the scenarios and violence both entertain and make a point. And I particularly liked the clever use of practical cameras. But what really sells the story is the impressive, powerful acting from the two leads which add to the film's authenticity, relatableness, and emotional power.

M.O.M: Mimicking Older Movie
vandeman-scott12 August 2021
I'm not in accord with the high-star reviews presented here, but neither am I with the one-star reviews. Yes, _M. O. M._ is a less-than-average movie that continues to torture the tired found-footage cliché. It would have been better as a straight film without the hackneyed gimmick, but the real problem is that this movie has been made before, just immensely better. For the tormented mom/psycho son theme done right, see Lynne Ramsay's WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN (Tilda Swinton, Ezra Miller).

The crux of the problem with _M. O. M._ is, with a storyline so reminiscent of KEVIN, one can't help comparing it to the better film, and by comparison, it fares extremely poorly. Were it not a nearly direct ripoff, I might have cut it a little more slack, but Melinda Page Hamil is no Swinton and Bailey Edwards is no Miller, so they can't pull off the intensity the better actors brought to their respective corresponding roles as mother and son.

Where Swinton laid a convincing veneer of self loathing and intelligence over anxiety, depression, and desperation, Page Hamil is frustratingly obtuse and clumsy, especially in portraying half-witted attempts to outsmart a teenager, which isn't that difficult. Where Miller inhabited psychopathy with a hint of sexual menace that was at once enticing and repellant, Edwards reads as little more than a snotty brat in need of a serious butt whipping. As such, neither of the principals here inspire much sympathy.

Further, this script can't even begin to match the complexity and nuance so apparent in the earlier film. And production values? Forget about it. Not even in the same universe.

All that said, one star is still too uncharitable. This one's marginally watchable, though somewhat less so if you've already seen its classier older cousin. 3.5 stars.

Excellent Movie
cocherdumas15 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this movie on Amazon and I loved it! Of course people giving it 10 stars also only have this movie reviewed; obviously they worked on this film. I didn't have anything to do with the making of this film; I give it a solid 8! Throughout the movie I kept wondering who the psycho was. Son or Mother, or both. The ending had my mouth wide open. Excellent acting, excellent directing-the movie never got boring, and excellent writing! Thank you for finally giving a movie a realistic ending. They don't always have to live happily ever after! Great work!! I definitely recommend this film.

Sick of fake reviews
jdiz11516 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Don't believe any of these fake 9 and 10 reviews from obvious shills. A common tactic used on this site for years. This movie is not good. It's boring and goes nowhere. Yes I get it how the son slips through the cracks of the system but that's it. That's the entire movie it literally offers nothing else. The son is crazy and she kills him. Also, how is the mom at the end watching her videos that she never uploaded? Skip this trash.

good thriller

Really acts like more of a thriller than horror movie, but is effective none the less. A little slow at times, but worth the effort. The credit stinger is pretty great. The performances are solid. Worth a go.

Great Found Footage
darquethornz-368-50960431 December 2020
So I am not going to say that this is great for a found footage movie.. because this flick is great regardless of how it was filmed. Telling this story the right way couldn't have been done in any other way which is kind-of the whole essence of the found footage genre.

This tale is very well told. You can tell that proper research was done and it is believable that this situation could (and has) occurred. The actors do a good job being their characters especially the actor playing Jacob; Bailey Edwards. This guy.. well he makes you truly believe in his mindset.. the way the movie is put together you see more of the side of the mother and while you want so much to give him the benefit of the doubt.. at the end.. you just cant.

My point, give it a chance, found footage or not.. its absolutely worth a watch!
