Images of a lifetime

This is so impressive. The hours and days it must have taken Casey Anderson to obtain this amazing footage of these very secretive, elusive animals. Excellent work, so grateful to have seen these beautiful, capable animals in such a spectacular setting.

To those asking why he did or did not take action it would be good to consider that these are complex issues, more so for those who document what happens in the the natural world than for lay people, watching from the comfort of our homes or theatres. Early on, he voices anxiety that even setting up cameras might impact the cats. What if an intervention leads to untoward consequences later? For example, some animals are only able to successfully raise one offspring to maturity (not saying this is true for cougars, just making an example) because it severely taxes them, and the environment won't support more. He clearly has a conscience, and his concern and affinity for the animals he films is evident.

Mr Anderson put an amazing amount of time and effort into making this doc about a mountain lion and her kits. I happened to flip to this about twenty minutes in and will no doubt try to catch it from the beginning next time. These big beautiful scary cats are amazing predators. Thank you for making the effort to bring this to T.V. sir ! Well done.

Great Photography Hideous Morality

Why would he plead with the hunters to spare the mother cat and then perversely watch the kitten lose weight and disappear. There's nothing about his occupation that does not intrude on nature. So why wouldn't he intrude and call a vet for the wounded cub? There are whole shows on Animal Planet about vets who fix and restore animals to wild habitats. His spoken concern for the dwindling ranks of maintain lions is thus ridiculous. An even bigger asshole photographer did a story about a baby elephant rejected by the heard and then torn to pieces by hyenas. This genre is not noble, it's just porn.

I Had a Problem with This

Warning: Spoilers
Beautiful photography and a fascinating glimpse into the life of these solitary creatures; however, I don't understand how a wildlife documentary filmmaker, who is supposed to be an animal lover, can film an animal's suffering and not intervene on her behalf. I understand the concept of filming nature as is, but Casey Anderson filmed one of the kits falling from a mountain ledge and then spent the next five weeks filming her while she slowly died. I'm sorry, but I think that's cruel. And this is after he expressed concerns that mountain lion numbers are decreasing. Earlier in the film Mr. Anderson stopped a hunter from shooting the mama lion. So why couldn't he have helped one of her kittens as well. A wildlife veterinarian and rehabilitation expert could've easily saved that poor kitten and given her a second chance.
