Discovery locates Spock's shuttle and works to find Tilly.
This is a decent episode but it has problems. Starting with positives, I enjoyed visuals, character moments and the majority of the performances. However, the writing in some instances does not compel me.
There were a number of characters who for me had some strong scenes such as Pike, Georgiou, Stamets, Tilly and Burnham in parts. However the plot lost me when one character makes a surprise appearance. I have to admit this is a matter of personal taste on my part as I generally dislike resurrection stories. Also, the mycelial network plots are starting to wear thin.
There are issues with the Section 31 involvement as the Discovery is running a danger of normalising their involvement and interaction with Starfleet, however I will reserve judgement until viewing further episodes.
I have the same issues with some of the dialogue as I had in previous episodes. The exposition is so obvious it feels lazy.
The visuals are as beautiful as ever, with great cinematography, lighting and colours on display constantly.
I appreciate the points being made by other reviewers about the emotional content of the show. Emotion can be powerful on screen but when you see too much from the same characters it gets annoying. It would be nice to go a few episodes without someone crying or welling up.
All that being said, I do not blame the actors, they all play their characters well, particularly Mary Wiseman who for me, along with Doug Jones, is always great value for her screen time.
