A feature film debut from writer and director Olga Gorodetskaya, based on a story written by Anna Starobinets (Port), Stray is a Russian horror movie that follows a couple who, after losing their young son, adopt a child from an orphanage that turns out to be less than “normal”.
The film, also called Tvar and Evil Boy, is not totally unlike some of the other “evil child” films we’ve seen over the years, and possesses (pun not intended) many of those traits and storyline routes that many of those films take. It still does, however, have it’s own soul and ideas, making it interesting and engaging enough from the start to get you invested and keep you watching. The young boy, once the couple take him home, begins immediately to transform...

For the second week of September, we don’t have a ton of horror and sci-fi headed home on Blu-ray and DVD, but there are a few releases genre fans are definitely going to want to pick up. This Tuesday’s biggest release is the new Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection in 4K from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, which includes the uncut version of Psycho, and Psycho is also getting its own stand alone release for its 60th anniversary as well.
Arrow Video has put together a Limited Edition set for Graveyards of Honor which features both filmic versions, and both Saw and Candyman are getting a re-release too. Other titles arriving on September 8th include A Deadly Legend and Evil Boy.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week […]

"See the world through their eyes." Dogwoof has debuted a short teaser trailer for yet another new doggie documentary, this one titled simply Stray. The film looks a bit like a spiritual sequel or double feature with Kedi, this time about stray dogs on the streets of Istanbul (while Kedi is about the iconic cats of Istanbul). In Stray, a trio of canine outcasts roam the streets of Istanbul. Through their eyes and ears, we are shown an intimate portrait of the life of a city and its people. This was set to premiere at this year's Tribeca Film Festival. A "memorable journey that won't be easy to shake, the film allows its soulful canine protagonist to command the screen, and, in the process, become visible in a region where so many [other] individuals are forced to remain unseen." I love every and any dog doc and this one, of course,...

London-based documentary distributor Dogwoof has acquired dog documentary “Stray,” which was slated to bow at April’s now-postponed Tribeca Film Festival.
The doc specialist has picked up world rights to the Turkey-set film, which also marks Dogwoof’s first dog-centric sales documentary.
The doc takes a canine’s eye-view of the streets of Istanbul, and follows three dogs — Zeytin, Nazar and Kartel — as they roam the city, offering a unique take on Istanbul and its inhabitants. The dogs’ lives ultimately intersect when they bond with a group of young Syrians who share the streets with them.
The deal was brokered by Oli Harbottle, head of distribution and acquisitions at Dogwoof, working directly with the filmmakers. Dogwoof will be presenting the film to buyers in the coming weeks with a view to releasing the film in cinemas this fall.
“Stray” was directed, shot and edited by Elizabeth Lo and produced by Lo and Shane Boris.
