Just an excellent documentary series that combined the real (now retired) investigators, some of the victims testimonies, and actual video footage of the crime scenes. This unknown Golden State killer escalated from a string of home break-ins and robberies in the 1970's to at least 50 rapes across the state of California and eventually to a series of rapes and brutal murders in the 1980's ....and then he just suddenly stopped and his standard method of operandi (M/O) was not identified any further by California state police departments.
This documentary series outlines the close encounters a few surviving individuals had with the Golden State killer and how they nearly caught him but they were either shot while trying to capture him or he completely alluded escape never leaving behind any fingerprints. Unknown to the entire human race and crime investigators until 1985 when Sir Alec John Jeffreys, from the University of Leicester in Great Britain had a eureka moment and utilized DNA profiling for the first time.
Even with DNA testing being first utilized in the mid 1980's police departments and their related departments of justices had to first create new state laws to allow DNA testing to be used in court proceedings, and to draw DNA from convicted felony crime related prisoners already locked up.
There is minimal graphic detail in the documentary series and the series outlines very clearly how the Golden State killer's profile was being used to determine who the potential list of suspects could be. In an effort to finally close the case with the support of DNA evidence that the serial killer and rapist left behind, not realizing that the evolution of DNA through family and/or closely associated genetic matches could assist the police and FBI in determining who is on the short list of potential suspects.
Although at the original time this series aired the Golden State Killer's identity remained unknown. On April 25th, 2018, an arrest was finally made using a DNA match from a discarded sample from a 72 year old suspect named Joseph James DeAngelo. I can't wait for this terrific documentary series to be updated once the police and FBI have confirmed that the 72 year old Joseph James DeAngelo is their man to assess what the investigators did right, and what errors they may have made in getting this psychopath off of the street and onto death row.
Just an excellent documentary series rating a perfect 10 out of 10!
