“The Rising” Season 2 has been canceled just months before production was due to start, Variety has learned.
Cast and crew were gearing up for the Sky Studios show when they were told to down tools two months before principal photography got underway. “It was canceled before they were due to start filming,” a source familiar with the project told Variety. “All the cast and everything [were ready to go] and they just pulled the plug.”
Variety understands there were a “number of reasons” the production will not go ahead.
The second season, which was set to be titled “Risen,” was due to have a similar premise to the first but with different characters, settings and themes, turning the show into something of an anthology series.

Billie Piper’s directorial debut Rare Beasts is a film that intelligently plays on the tropes of the archetypal romantic comedy, all the while ripping up the rulebook and subverting expectations. We had the pleasure of speaking to Piper, who takes on the lead role as well as writing and directing the movie, to discuss this unique and resourceful piece of cinema, as we chat about the art of collaboration, and on crafting such flawed characters and relationships on screen. We also had the chance to tell her about our fondness for her music when growing up…

Billie Piper is continuing her exceptional career trajectory with her directorial debut, Rare Beasts. The briefest way to describe the upcoming film is to call it a love story — but that might give you the wrong impression. I love this line from the director notes of Rare Beasts: “When you live through nihilism/cynicism/hopelessness, your view of the world is not necessarily as it is, but rather your projection [of it].” Billie Piper’s speaking about the frank tone and dialogue of the heightened world she’s constructed as writer-director-star, but she could also be referring to the lens through which we now view our world via social media. One might say Piper has chosen the trending topic of “romantic love” and visualized the sort of doomscroll we’d find on Twitter for the topic pitting feminists versus chauvinists, progressives versus traditionalists, and the self-righteous versus the confused. It’s uncensored, honest, and crude. It’s relatable, deplorable, and hilarious. And it’s a singular vision of emotional schizophrenia.

"A post-Fleabag-era tale of dysfunctional relationships." Give it a whirl! Brainstorm Media has released the official US trailer for an indie offbeat romantic comedy called Rare Beasts, marking the feature directorial debut of talented English actress Billie Piper. This premiered in 2019 at the Venice Film Festival and is only now getting an official release in both the UK and US this summer. It's described as an "anti rom-com" film about Mandy, a career-driven single mother, who falls in love with the charming, traditionalist Pete. Billie Piper stars as Mandy, with Leo Bill as Peter, plus Kerry Fox, Toby Woolf, David Thewlis, and Lily James. This certainly does look offbeat and unique, for sure. I'm still curious to check it out - worth a look. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Billie Piper's Rare Beasts, direct from YouTube: Mandy (Billie Piper) a nihilistic young writer and mother who, while...

Sony family favorite “Peter Rabbit 2” and Disney’s Oscar champion “Nomadland” topped the charts as the U.K. enjoyed its first full week of box office in months.

In her directorial debut, Piper announces herself as a truly thrilling film-maker with this bleakly brilliant inversion of the cutesy London love story
Romcoms are about love and they want to be loved. Billie Piper’s anti-romcom is about something else – and it wants something else.
Rare Beasts is a bold experiment in nerve-jangling confrontation: it has the structure and ingredients of romantic comedy but turns everything on its head. On paper, it could be made by Richard Curtis: there are attractive views of London, an awful date in a restaurant, bittersweet scenes with parents, reflective moments by the river, a Bridget Jones-y media job, a glamorous wedding scene and even a cameo for Lily James. But everything goes wrong. Billie Piper’s movie refuses to read the room; it ignores the traditional cues for comedy and gentleness and the learning of life lessons. It is on a spectrum of its own.

Some 80% of indoor cinemas across England, Scotland and Wales reopened on Monday (May 17) after months of being shuttered due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Judging by the first two days of box office collections, U.K. audiences are eagerly quenching their thirst for cinema.

As many as 14 films opened on Monday, though it was the modern take of the fuzzy-tailed children’s classic that dominated. Sony’s family-oriented title “Peter Rabbit 2” opened across 334 sites to collect a strong £393,841 over Monday and Tuesday, according to figures released by Comscore.
Disney’s Oscar champion “Nomadland,” already available to Disney Plus subscribers in the region from April 30, bowed in second place with £173,085 from 259 locations.
Warner Bros.’ creature face-off epic “Godzilla vs Kong” collected £164,726 from 296 sites in third place, while Lionsgate’s horror franchise addition, “Spiral: From The Book Of Saw,” took £144,317 from 198 locations in fourth place.

Hulu has released first-look photos from the set of “Tom and Pammy,” the streamer’s upcoming limited event series about the relationship between Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson, and the scandal that erupted out of their stolen sex tape. The series stars Sebastian Stan as Lee, and Lily James as Anderson. “I, Tonya” director Craig Gillespie is heading up the project, with “The Wrestler” scribe Rob Siegel. Check out the first look below, from Hulu and Sebastian Stan’s Instagram.
Fans on Twitter have widely praised the casting, as Stan and James are able to affect a stunning resemblance to their real-life characters, even recreating an iconic photo of Lee and Anderson.
The relationship between Anderson, best known for “Baywatch” and “Home Improvement,” and Lee, Mötley Crüe’s longtime drummer, ruled celebrity tabloids in the 1990s, as did the scandal of when their sex tape from their honeymoon was stolen and leaked to the public.

“Saint Maud,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Nomadland,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Ammonite” are among the leading films on the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ (BAFTA) longlist for annual British Film Awards that were announced Thursday.
The publication of the longlists follows the BAFTA 2020 Review, where over 120 wide-ranging changes were introduced across voting, membership and campaigning to address a lack of diversity in the 2020 Film Awards nominations. As part of these changes, a new longlisting initial round was introduced for the awards, resulting in three rounds of voting. Round one voting, which took place from Jan. 12-26, produced the longlists in all categories.
The directing category sees the BAFTA make an effort towards gender parity. To determine this longlist, in Round One, the directing chapter voted and the top eight female and top eight male directed films were automatically longlisted. The remaining two female and two...

Since his appointment as artistic director of the Locarno Film festival in early November, Italian film critic Giona A. Nazzaro has been busy taking the reins of the prominent Swiss festival. Set to take place in August, the event now has a new programming team as well as industry chief — longtime Locarno collaborator Markus Duffner — firmly in place.
Nazzaro, who is the former head of the Venice Film Festival’s Critics’ Week, also found time to write a love letter to Denis Villeneuve posted on the Locarno website in reaction to Villeneuve’s recent column in Variety, in which the director blasted the HBO Max deal for the release of his upcoming “Dune” adaptation that bypasses the theatrical window.
Having made his first moves, Nazzaro spoke exclusively to Variety about his vision for Europe’s longtime pre-eminent indie cinema event, which he intends to lead into “uncharted territory.”
Let’s start with Villeneuve.

Hulu has set its sights on one of the internet era’s first and most infamous sex tape scandals.
Deadline reported that Hulu has tapped Lily James and Sebastian Stan to play Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, respectively, in an event series centered on the duo’s relationship and the scandal that resulted from their stolen sex tape. Seth Rogen is also slated to appear in the project, which is going by the working title “Pam & Tommy,” as the man who stole the sex tape. Craig Gillespie is slated to direct the project and Rob Siegel will serve as writer. The eight-episode series is expected to shoot in spring 2021.
Per Deadline, the relationship between Anderson, who starred in “Baywatch” and “Home Improvement,” and Lee, Mötley Crüe’s longtime drummer, dominated celebrity tabloids in the 1990s, including the scandal of when their sex tape from their honeymoon was stolen and leaked to the public.
