When a human heart is longing for something or someone
rinasayora1 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I love the book from Daniel Glattauer this movie is based on.

It was the first that I read or rather heard three times. This was also due to the excellent job of the readers of the audio book. In addition, I saw a play depicting the story on stage.

This being the third version I saw is also the third with excellent actors.

To me this story seems very difficult to realize as an actor as in most scenes you don't have a direct partner and the audience watches the protagonists while they're thinking. And it was never boring. I was always able to grasp the motivation and emotion.

Also, what was said already, camera, music and settings where very well chosen. I also like most of the ideas that were using the advantage of a film compared to a book to make the characters and their interactions more perceptible.

There were a few essentials points of the story though that I missed in that film.

First being Leos analysis of Emma being the start of it all. In the movie it was a short sentence. In the book, the reader understood Leos passion for language by his elaboration. I also like the idea of Emma calling herself Emmi instead of Leo giving her that name.

At least I would have expected that Emma got suspicious at the end when Bernhard called her so that he not just had a hunch but indeed spied on her. In the book her explanation made sense that he just discovered her other personality. In addition, Leo was quiet fast switching communication to Emma while he was expecting a reply from his girlfriend. The pain I believed Leo had in the book, where it took weeks for both to communicate again by coincidence, was over quiet fast apparently just by a "blablabla" and some insults.

Second, the process when they heard their voices for the first time was very elementary to me in the book but dropped in the film.

Third, their meeting in the Café missed the fun part with Emma describing all the poor men that have not allowed to be Leo. And more crucial her description who she excluded of the possibility of being Leo as for example the seem-to-be-handsome man with his beautiful arm candy.

I also missed there a central sentence of Leo, saying that he doesn't care which version of Emma is the real one as he has his own in mind.

Fourth, I missed Emmas trials to bring Leo together with one of her friends. That would have had more value than Leos sister trying to do so. And her persuasions that they both would meet so that Bernhard's urge to have it happenes is more understandable.

Bernhard seemed in general not as much in love with her as the book suggested.

All critics aside I feel a huge respect for the regisseur to bring such a story with all the feelings and suspense it evokes on screen as I find this really challenging.

What I find really impressing and moving for example is the "core" scene when Leo saves Emma from the North Wind. And I enjoyed how the relationship of Leo and his sister as well as between Emma and the kids was presented in the movie.

Lucky mistake (?)

I also had an instance where I was sending emails to an ex-classmate of mine. At least that's what I thought, turned out that someone else was receiving the emails. No romance evolved and no real connection came of it. One day she (the email adress would suggest that it was also a she) wrote back that she enjoys my emails, but that she has no idea who I am.

I guess if I reacted differently ... but then again, it didn't sound like she (again very likely a she) was interested in more. In fact she told me to stop sending her emails. That sounds quite definitive right? Anyway I'm completely off topic ... well not off topic, but off movie here.

There seems to be a different version (maybe a short movie?) of this film. I have not watched that obviously. A nicely told story of many characters and a very well casted one at that. Not just German talent at hand, but that is not the reason why I liked it. Everyone plays their role as good as they can. And you are quite able to understand their motivation. Ending on a beat that ... well I think most people/viewers will approve of.

Unique German romantic comedy

A quite good German romantic comedy. Besides funny and cute, it is very innovative considering the genre. Worth watching. Very well acted and directed.

mostly excelent rendition of the book

Warning: Spoilers
With the exception of the closing of the movie I thought the movie did an excellent job of portraying the book in a movie. I hadn't thought it was possible.

SPOILER ALARM: Only the last scene spoils it, by neither following the book nor providing satisfactory closure.

An unethical story line with a beautiful cinematography
dilipchalissery23 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
On 22.09 I saw the movies "Gut gegen Nordwind" in Berlin. Film in the view point of art: The director has done his job very well, very good cinematography, top camera works and visuals, excellent background music.

Film in the view point of mass media ethics:

Poor storyline: i find it too bad that such a movie was being made. The story started with a break of a couple. At the time of break up, the girl was already seeing another man for 3 months. *The first polyamory person in the movie.* (A big minus for the point)

The girl gets twice or thrice back to the hero leo * just for having sex.* (Another big minus for the point), even when the hero is in virtual relationship with the heroine, Emmi, where hero doesn't have a value of relationship.

The hero, leo wasn't able to forget his ex girl-friend, which is normal in every break ups. (a plus for the point, as its happening or could happen scenario) The heroine Emma was having sex with her husband, when she was in a virtual realtionship with Leo. * A phycological cheating of a relationship* *The second polyamory person in the movie.* (Another big minus for the point)

By the end of the movie, the husband of Emma, Bernad has started to change, being a good husband, eventhough he came across that she has a secret relationship. At the end, emma just want to have to live with leo, as he is * not old as her husband *, as he is good email writer.

In short the movie just says, women needs lots of sex, women would be moving from one realtionship to another from time to time, doesn't value relationship, is polyamorous.

Throughout the movie, the director depicted woman, as a human being who just wants to have sex, multiple relationship and a relationship grasshopper or gold digger.

A movie is always for lots of people, thats the reason why it is called mass meida. By the ethics of movie making, the director and the producer are obligued to give good value for the viewers or an entertainer, which isn't against the ethics of realtionship, which doesn't hurt woman values, which talks about women empowerment or equality of rights of woman and man.

sublime beyond expectation
rubyxxi5 August 2023
This was an excellent film about the experience of online anonymity and how the connection one makes with a special some one in this way can be stronger than the traditional way. How long that connection can be sustained is another question. This however, doesn't take away from the fact that such experience will move you. This film does a fantastic job creating a vibe of introspection and transference that happens during online connections. The acting is fabulous, the soundtrack is a journey in itself. The director obviously had a good understanding of such experience and therefore how to bring it all together in a magical way, which is likely to be how one would experience this type of anonymous online connection.

Don't waste 2 precious hours of your life
inspirelake17 February 2024
And so, it looked somewhat promising for the first half hour and then it was quiet afternoon and I forced myself to endure the remaining interminable load of never ending nothing. All in the hope that something important/useful/interesting might occur.

Nope. Just bored, bourgeois not particularly interesting/talented/inventive or motivated, utterly self absorbed people with no real problems to speak of, too comfortably off, wandering around in a blaze of nothingness, not even proper self seeking or self examination or anything else to offer the viewer. Apparently based on a book. Mills and Boon? Not enough here to waste five minutes on. Romance is NOT destroying a solid marriage on a bored person's whim. Goodbye to that load of trash.

Unique and Brilliant

It's powerful -how 2 peoples emotions and feelings are shown by not even seeing each other in real life. It's witty and funny but at the same time with a deep meaning .
