Something A Little Different And Fun!
Movie-Misfit25 February 2020
Herman Yau's latest comedy, about a dysfunctional family who's only saving grace is the calming sea-view from a window in their flat, is often funny, often twisted, and actually quite enjoyable!

Of course, its not all as simple as that as this messed up bunch argue, fight and struggle through daily life with each other, and pretty much anyone who crosses their paths...

When the mysterious Louis Koo erects a large billboard on his rooftop flat (with someone who looks like Karl Maka on it), he blocks their favourite view. This results in the family trying to do whatever they can to get it removed, which includes trying to remove it themselves. Cue plenty of madness and outrageous comedy situations of course!

If some of these comedy situations may seem a little staged, that would be down to the fact that the film is actually based on a play written by co-star Cheung Tat Ming (grandpa), who also co-produced. As it creeps towards the one hour mark, A Home With A View starts to turn a little darker, before carrying us right through to its pitch-black ending (if somewhat rushed conclusion)...

The cast is just fantastic, and I loved seeing Anita Yuen back in such a strong role. Both Francis Ng and Anthony Wong get to play the nice guys for a change, leaving their typical 'mad-men' roles behind, and there's plenty of cameos from familiar faces too. The kids of the family are quite fun too, with the son (played by Ng Siu Hin) cracking me up most of all. He looks a little like Wen Zhang and comes across just as funny.

A Home With A View is a great examination of overcrowded and over-priced living in Hong Kong. Herman Yau has crafted a great piece on surviving in a dog-eat-dog world with plenty of laughs and in a way one would only expect to see in a Hong Kong movie!

Overall: Something a little different, A Home With A View is pretty entertaining but not amazing...

No time to draw breath

Warning: Spoilers
A HOME WITH A VIEW is a typical Hong Kong comedy, directed by former Category III helmer Herman Yau. It's a knockabout single-location comedy full of bizarre antics and weird characters, and all of it is delivered at top speed, with the loud barking of lines and overacting from all involved. How funny you find all this really depends on your liking for lowbrow Chinese humour with mugging all over the place. Still, the plot's quite an inventive one, and there are decent roles for old faces: Anthony Wong as a charming family friend, Louis Koo as the antagonist, Lam Suet as the butcher neighbour, Francis Ng as family head, Anita Yuen as long-suffering wife, and a great Karl Maka cameo.

Strange neighbors
kosmasp19 August 2019
Now you figure out who is the strangest ... having said that current political movements in Hong Kong make this almost too real. It is not of course and people protesting in the streets is quite something different than occupants of flats going at it or each other.

As the title suggest there is a home with a view but that does change with a set up of a billboard. Not cool, but change is something that will happen in life. While this treats this as a comedy, it also incorporates a lot of violence too (for a comedy that is). Take it as it is and enjoy if possible, as this is quite decent

Could have had a better ending

Warning: Spoilers
A nice movie showing the trials and tribulations of living super cramped living quarters with a lifetime of mortgages. The ending could have been a little more realistic.

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time!

The pacing, first of all, is fabulous. The movie sets you up with everything a viewer need to see in the first ten minutes or so, and then runs with it! The writing is funny and everything has the feeling of being just ever-so-slightly surreal.

I can't say much except that it was an inspiring movie to watch... and I plan to rewatch it over and over again!

Very enjoyable movie with big surprises

This movie is pure genius, I'd rate it way up there along with other cult classics like Ebola Syndrome, Taxi Hunter, and The Eight Immortals Restaurant: The Untold Story. I enjoyed it a lot and plan to rewatch it, one time is not enough.
