India has always been a popular destination for international productions, hosting everything from European independent films and British series, most recently ITV’s Beecham House and Netflix/BBC’s A Suitable Boy, to studio movies like Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and Netflix’s Chris Hemsworth-starrer Extraction.
In addition to the country’s oft-touted attractions – a skilled workforce, low costs, stunning landscapes and historical monuments – it also boasts a rich canon of English-language, India-set literature that the story-hungry streamers have been plundering in recent years. Netflix’s A Suitable Boy and The White Tiger, Apple TV+’s Shantaram and HBO’s upcoming seven-part series A Fine Balance, are all based on India-themed novels.
But the country has been pretty much off limits during the pandemic. It had a disruptive although mostly manageable first wave of Covid in 2020, which nonetheless deterred some international shoots, before shocking the world with a devastating...

Natalie Holt has been set as the composer for Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, becoming the first woman to score a live-action Star Wars project. She broke the news in an interview with Vanity Fair published on Friday, also confirming reports that longtime Star Wars composer John Williams will provide the show’s main title theme, in his first live-action Star Wars TV outing.
Holt teased that Williams’ past work on the franchise will serve as “tentpoles” for her own—and that she will look to bring her own “new and fresh” interpretation of Star Wars music to the series, via elements she can’t yet reveal. “It’s been glorious, working with my hero,” she said with reference to Williams, “and also bringing my own voice to the show.”
Holt also shared that Williams’ as-yet-unheard theme is “reflective” and “just entirely appropriate” for the series.

The second series of Jane Austen adaptation Sanditon debuts on PBS Masterpiece Sunday and BritBox Monday but, were it not for a fan-led campaign that the original author would have been proud of, the show could easily have slipped off TV altogether.
A Sanditon Sisterhood campaign kicked into gear when the show was axed by original broadcaster ITV after just one season and, more than a year after the cancellation, Sanditon, which is based on an unfinished Austen manuscript, was revived for a second and third run by co-producer PBS Masterpiece and ITV-owned streamer BritBox.
The Austen-obsessed Sisterhood were energizing, launching a website, Instagram page and even bombarding execs and commissioners with Sanditon gifts including a Saving Sanditon egg box (an oft-quoted line from the show goes “Sanditon will rise from the ashes as sure as eggs are eggs”) and a clutch of Saving Sanditon facemasks.

Among the detective dramas and high-stakes thrillers due to arrive on British television in the next year or so, there are a clutch of sci-fi, supernatural and horror shows also coming our way. April saw the release of Sky One original Intergalactic – the story of a wrongly imprisoned galactic pilot who breaks out of space jail with a gang of other high-security female prisoners – and Netflix has ordered fantasy novel adaptations Half Bad, Cuckoo Song, Lockwood & Co. and The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle – respectively, tales of witches, supernatural pacts, ghost-hunters, and a woman who jumps between bodies in her quest to solve a murder mystery. Coming to terrestrial TV, there’s Life After Life and The Three, stories about living multiple versions of the same life, and the miraculous child survivors of a mysterious plane crash.

Actress Shriya Pilgaonkar says the industry needs to work on eliminating pay disparity on the basis of gender. Shriya, who will be seen in the film "Haathi Mere Saathi", says she has heard actresses discussing how male stars often get paid as much as the entire budget of a heroine-centric film!
"I have heard conversations of the biggest leading actresses on how the budget of their entire film has been the salary of a male actor," she told Ians.
She says that even though you don't know how much your co-actor is earning, you are able to guess based on the film's progresses.
"I don't know how much my co-actors get but you get a sense of it. You know how negotiations are done. At a personal level, I made sure that I get the best deal in my capacity," she says.
The actress says that it's important to stand up for yourself.

Netflix psychological thriller Behind Her Eyes, adapted from Sarah Pinborough’s hit novel of the same name, sets its cast an unenviably tough task (and not just because almost everyone’s having to do a regional accent). Through subtleties and shifts in their performances, Eve Hewson, Tom Bateman, Simona Brown and Robert Aramayo need to keep the audience invested while keeping us guessing. What is it we’re watching? Is this six-part series the tale of Adele and David’s brittle marriage and the secrets that bind them? Or the story of single-mother Louise (Simona Brown) getting in over her head with this glamorous new couple? Could it be something else entirely?
While you’re asking yourself those questions, you’ll likely be asking another: where have I seen that guy before? While we can’t help with the former and stay spoiler-free, we can answer that one…

We had planned to visit family in India this summer, but instead I'm adding my notes to these travel tips for friends. And each Sunday night, I'm watching Beecham House, which premiered last month on PBS Masterpiece for Us audiences.
Set in India, Beecham House's six episodes narrate a fact-based fiction of an Englishman living in Delhi in the late 19th century. His household includes a baby, Indians, and some British family, with interactions with Muslim neighbors, British and French troops, and the Mughals. It is written, produced, and directed by Gurinder Chadha, whose films like Blinded by the Light have astutely championed the nuances of Indian culture, featuring familial care, domesticity, coming of age, marriage, parenthood, or larger issues like racial discrimination, prejudice, and even ethnic violence. ITV will not be commissioning a second series of Bend It Like Beckham filmmaker Gurinder Chadha’s lavish period drama Beecham House.
The six-part series, produced by Chadha’s Bend It TV, only managed to pull in an audience of 3.3M in a prestige Sunday night slot. It could not compete with other dramas in the same ITV slot, such as Victoria.
Beecham House will air on PBS in March next year. ITV said Chadha is still hoping to keep the drama going beyond series one through a deal with another international broadcaster.
The drama takes place on the cusp of 19th century in Delhi, following the fortunes of the residents of the titular mansion. It was written by Chadha, Paul Mayeda Berges, Shahrukh Husain and Victor Levin (Mad Men).

Chai with Gurinder Chadha at the Bagri Foundation London Indian Film Festival 2019 on Saturday 22nd June, 2019 at Picture House Central, London England
Darren Brade Photography
Continuing its memorable events, the London Indian Film Festival hosted another incredible conversation with a very special guest. In an event called Chai with Chadha, the noted director Gurinder Chadha was on stage for an in-depth discussion with Mike McCahill about her outstanding films.
Chadha’s career began with the noted 1993 hit Bhaji On The Beach, which became an instant classic. Her mainstream mega hit was of course the unforgettable Bend It Like Beckham, which like many of her films reference a uniquely British Asian experience. Other incredible films are Bride and Prejudice, which for this writer and many non-Indian film fans was the movie that led us to Bollywood. Also of note is Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, It’s a Wonderful Afterlife and Viceroy’s House.

The UK iteration of BritBox, the Svod service run by ITV and the BBC, is set to launch in the second half of 2019.
ITV CEO Carolyn McCall said the digital platform was “on track” to make its launch by the end of the year. This comes as the commercial British broadcaster faces a number of advertising challenges. Total advertisting was down 7% across the first quarter of the year with broadcast and online revenue also down 7% to £489M (Us$637M) in the period.
McCall noted that total advertising was also expected to be down 6% over the first half of 2019 as ITV is impacted by the “continuing economic and political uncertainty and its effect on the demand for advertising” and the absence of a major football tournament in the summer.
One bright spot was the continued performance of ITV Studios, the production company that makes shows including Love Island and Bodyguard, which saw revenue up 1% to £385M.

Cannes — The 2nd Canneseries festival ended Wednesday. Variety asks what this year’s second edition says about the current state of high-end drama series production.
1.Comedy Ruled, And Won
The 2nd Canneseries had no competition title with the profile of “Killing Eve,” its standout last year. A world premiere screened out of competition as the last series in the whole festival, where it met with some thunderous applause, “Years & Years,” a BBC-Canal Plus-HBO production showrun by U.K. industry heavyweight Russell T. The Canneseries Competition ran a wide gamut – from genre (“Outbreak”) to drama (“Bauhaus”), drama-thrillers (“The Twelve”), near future low-fi (“The Feed”), dramedies and comedies, Canneseries artistic director Albin Levi pointed out.

Netflix movies may still be question mark in terms of being allowed in competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in May, but the streaming giant will be present at Cannes Series. The Cannes television festival will mark its second year next month with Netflix going up against rival Amazon in the competition section. The full lineup includes series from Israel, Norway, Spain, and Belgium.
Netflix’s competition entry is the German series “How to Sell Drugs Online Fast,” from writers Philipp Käßbohrer and Matthias Murmann. Amazon is heading to Cannes Series with “The Feed,” a London-set drama created by Channing Powell and based on the novel Nick Clark Windo. “The Feed” stars “Game of Thrones” favorite Michelle Fairley opposite David Thewlis in a story about a piece of technology that allows people to instantly share thoughts and emotions. The tech falls into the wrong hands and becomes a murderous weapon.

Sky U.K. E.U. Deal: A Pandora’S Box?
Has outgoing European Competition Commissioner – and maybe next Commission president – Margrethe Vestager opened a Pandora’s Box?
On Thursday evening, the E.U. competition authorities announced they had accepted commitments from Sky U.K. and Disney, NBC Universal, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. regarding their film licensing deals in the U.K. The settlement affects a decades-long backbone of the studio business around the world: Territory-by-territory exclusive sales. Sky U.K. and its studio partners, while not marketing the offer in other territories, promise not to bar E.U. consumers outside the U.K. who want to subscribe to its U.K. film services. So a Brit ex-pat in Madrid can now watch Sky U.K. movies without setting up a U.K. account.
