By now it is really all about the comedy

Warning: Spoilers
"Sauerkrautkoma" is a new German movie from 2018 that runs for 90 minutes approximately and is the most recent installment to the Eberhofer film series, number 4 already I believe. Director is once more Ed Herzog and he (with Stefan Betz) also adapted Rita Falk's novel. This is a movie that is one of many that combine crime and comedy in the film industry in Germany. The focus here is on regional humor and comedy and this one is from South Germany, Bavaria and the main character is sent to Munich where he meets many familiar people that you have also come across in other movies from this series. Well, there is a murder yes, but honestly this one was really in the background and almost everything linked to it also felt intended to put more emphasis on the funnier moments, especially the escalation at the rich folks' house with one supporting character shooting himself in the foot. I am talking about Simon Schwarz of course. His sauerkraut scene earlier is among the comedic highlights of the film too and of course this is the one the film is named after indirectly too. I did not like the reference early on, but the more time passed and I think about it the more I do like it. The one area I did not like at all though was the marriage and relationship üart, also with the new potential love interest, which did absolutely nothing for me to be honest. Yes the main character's lack of romance is fun to watch at times and we find each other in him to some extent at least, but that's really it and to be fair one or two inclusions about this would have been enough and the almost dramatic meeting at the bus stop in the end was way way too much I cannot deny. But yeah, it's still not too difficult to appreciate all the quality in this film, there were many funny moments where I just had to laugh and the film really felt shorter than it actually was and could have gone for another 10-15 minutes and it would have been good. I hope the series keeps going, maybe with some better crime writing again because honestly the fact that the corpse is in the character's car, is linked to the character's boss and so on, it is just too much. But don't expect a True Detective here, focus on the fun and you will have a really good time. Maybe tough to appreciate this one as a foreigner, but Germans can have a fun time here, especially Bavarians, but also some foreigners too if they don't mess up the subtitles. I certainly give this film a thumbs-up and recommend checking it out. Go see it.

Doesn't let up

Some movie series do let up at some point, but this one seems to be on a good way to keep going. Even if you may be a bit fed up about yet another romantic kerkuffle. It's not the same confusion as the times before, but there is tension again between the lovers and it's another indecision by our main character that makes that happen.

But if you are invested into the characters (and there may not be as much detail or depth to some of them, like the brother or the friends, as in some of the previous entries), you will absolutely love this. Quirks and craziness ensue and you will be interested in yet another outcome ... and we want more. So while I haven't read any of the novels this is based on yet, I hope there is more to come. German cinema and cinema overall needs great oddities like this!
