It’s been a year and a half since Nightbitch, a project that has been described as being a darkly comic “neo-horror” movie, went into production with Amy Adams (American Hustle) in the lead role, and now we finally have an update to share: Searchlight Pictures has announced that they will be giving the film a theatrical release on December 6, 2024. This is an upgrade in the release plans, as Nightbitch was originally meant to be released through the Hulu streaming service.
Written and directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Nightbitch is based on a novel by Rachel Yoder. The film will tell the story of a suburban mom thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler. As she embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a dog.
Adams plays that possibly canine housewife.

Aubrey Plaza and Dan Levy, the stars of “Happiest Season,” are reunited for short film “Decades of Confusion,” which is basically a commercial for fashion brand Loewe. If only Plaza could spell it.
It ain’t your average retail ad: “Black Mirror” director Ally Pankiw directed the short that was penned by “Good Grief” and “Schitt’s Creek” star Levy.
Plaza stars as a contestant in a spelling bee that spans each decade from 1971 to the present day. Levy is the (frustrated) judge. Plaza may not be able to spell “Loewe”, but she sure can put together an outfit from the fashion house. Plaza combs the Loewe archives to transform into a new character for the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, 2000s…
“Wigs, iconic looks from the Loewe archive, and wrong answers — from 1971 to present day,” the tagline reads.
Plaza is next set to star in Ethan Coen’s dark comedy “Honey Don’t!...

Kristen Stewart, star of Love Lies Bleeding, wasn’t too happy with 2020’s Happiest Season, which is widely deemed the first lesbian Christmas rom-com produced by an eminent Hollywood studio. With openly out Clea DuVall as its director and Stewart as a starring talent attached to it, the outing was deemed a benchmark in the history of mainstream queer Hollywood films.

Looking back on the film now, though, the Twilight star wasn’t pleased with the innumerable ‘notes’ she was given by studio executives, which frustrated her to no end. This inundation boiled down to her hair and get-up in the endeavor. She also empathized with DuVall, who had the patience to keep up with the top brass feedback.
The actress chalked it up to their attempt at sanitizing or, in her words, ‘shrouding’ elements to make its appeal broader and easy to digest. And while...

Speaking to Them magazine alongside her “Love Lies Bleeding” co-star Katy O’Brien, Kristen Stewart briefly reflected on making the 2020 holiday romantic comedy “Happiest Season.” Set up at Sony Pictures and released in the U.S. direct to streaming via Hulu, the Clea DuVall-directed film was widely touted as the first lesbian Christmas rom-com produced by a major Hollywood studio.
“The identity was beaten out of my goals there,” Stewart told Them about “Happiest Season.” “I was getting so many studio executive notes about my hair and my clothes. I was like, ‘You did read the script. You did hire me. What are we doing here?’ It was fucking annoying.”
“And it’s fine, because I guess there are ways that you need to shroud things for everyone to easily digest,” Stewart added. “And I’m down with that. And honestly, fucking hats off to Clea, because I don’t have the patience [to do] that.

At the Berlin Film Festival press conference for her new film “Love Lies Bleeding,” Kristen Stewart said she thinks the era of queer films “being so pointedly only that is done,” adding that it’s time for films to focus on “sidelined perspectives” while “not making it all about the reasons that they’re sidelined.”
“Love Lies Bleeding” stars Stewart as reclusive gym manager Lou, who “falls hard for Jackie (Katy O’Brian), an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Las Vegas in pursuit of her dream,” the film’s synopsis reads. “But their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.”
When asked if filming the gory and twist-filled “Love Lies Bleeding” had changed her perspective on how queer stories are centered in cinema, Stewart sounded off on the topic.

In recent years, Stewart has proved herself as a capable actor, receiving a Best Actress nomination at the Academy Awards for her role in Spencer.

I was about seven years old the first time I saw her — a leather-clad woman with half of a shaved head and mountains of muscle over her 5'6" frame. My eyes would be engrossed the second she appeared on screen, and despite living in an affirming household, I felt like there was something weird or wrong about my fixation. Her name was Luna Vachon (real name Gertrude Vachon), a professional wrestler who perfectly encapsulated the glamour and pageantry of the WWF (now WWE), without ever sacrificing God-like strength and muscle tone. American culture has a weird relationship with visibly strong women, but the tides have been changing over the last five years. No longer relegated solely to punchlines or objects of fetishization, beefy women are now praised with the same adoration as their male counterparts.

“I will quit the fucking business.”
Kristen Stewart is jabbing her finger into the couch we’re sharing, speaking with increasing speed and ferocity about what has driven her to this brink. She’s spent five years fruitlessly trying to drum up financing for what she hopes will be her feature directing debut, “The Chronology of Water,” based on the stream-of-consciousness memoir by bisexual author Lidia Yuknavitch. She’s so hacked off about it that she’s about to ruin the furniture.
“I won’t make a-fucking-nother movie until I make this movie,” she declares. Then she sits back and breaks into nervous laughter. “Can’t wait for my agents to read that.”
Stewart has clearly entered the “fuck it” phase of her career.
Don’t worry: She isn’t going anywhere yet. Next week, Stewart is packing her snow boots for her eighth trek to the Sundance Film Festival,...

One would be forgiven for having absolutely no idea that a new action/comedy starring Jon Cena and Alison Brie hit theaters this past weekend. "Freelance" did, indeed, arrive in more than 2,000 theaters and was straight-up buried by the horror sensation that is "Five Nights at Freddy's." It would be one thing for a movie to come in second -- or even third place -- against a blockbuster release like that. Unfortunately for those behind this film, however, it barely made it into the top 10.
Relativity Media's "Freelance" opened to just $2 million, coming in at number eight on the charts for the weekend, per The Numbers. It made less than "The Nightmare Before Christmas" ($2.1 million), which is in the second weekend of its 30th anniversary re-release, and little more than "Saw X" ($1.7 million), which has been in theaters for five weekends. The worst news of all? Cena and Brie's...

Amazon’s adaptation of the hit romance novel about a prince and the US president’s son is well-intentioned yet listless
For many viewers, there’ll be something charmingly synthetic about Amazon’s milquetoast romcom Red, White and Royal Blue, another film aiming to show that gay love stories can be just as basic and sickly sweet as straight ones. Its overwhelming blandness is sort of the point, a sign of true representation, but vaguely admirable intentions only get the film so far – a win that it exists perhaps, but a loss for those hoping for something better than a Hallmark movie.
The painfully slow rise in gay stories that cater to a broader crowd has given us some crowd-pleasing winners, standout films like Love, Simon, Bros and Happiest Season, showing the importance and pleasure of watching same-sex romance on a bigger canvas, bursting out of the arthouse closet. But...

Why don’t they make great romantic comedies like they used to?
This age-old question has become a tiresome one these days, though Hollywood—especially streamers—is continuing to give us reasons to keep asking it. For every “The Big Sick,” “Rye Lane” or “Bros”—brilliant films that manage to use genre tropes in fresh, lean and inventive ways—there seem to be multiples of “Happiest Season,” “To All The Boys” and “Red, White & Royal Blue.”
That last title is playwright Matthew López’s feature debut and a frustrating entry into the rom-com genre. It’s not because it’s particularly bad—thanks to some occasionally inspired moments and delightful leads, it’s watchable—but because it’s bloated and undisciplined through meandering excesses that stubbornly hold it back from becoming the sizzling charmer it could have been.

HBO’s upcoming series The Idol has gone through at least one major creative overhaul since it was announced, with co-creator Amy Seimetz leaving the show in April 2022. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Exclusive: TriStar Pictures has landed Spyglass Media Group ‘s Thanksgiving, a full-length slasher film inspired by the fictitious trailer directed by Eli Roth featured in the cult 2007 film Grindhouse. Roth returns as director and co-wrote the script with Jeff Rendell, with Roger Birnbaum, Roth and Rendell producing.
While the plot for the film is being kept under wraps, the horror thriller will star Patrick Dempsey, Nell Verlaque, Addison Rae, Jalen Thomas Brooks and Milo Manheim.
The Thanksgiving trailer presented the gory teaser about a pseudo movie in which a slasher makes his own carving board out of the inhabitants of a Massachusetts town that makes a big annual fuss over the annual turkey day. One of the pivotal scenes involved Roth himself, separated from his head while in the throes of passion with a date in a convertible. There was no shortage of actors cast in the five Twilight movies. And while Kristen Stewart formed friendships with a few of her fellow castmates, she developed a particularly close bond with Taylor Lautner. Lautner, of course, portrayed Jacob Black in The Twilight Saga. He is Bella Swan’s werewolf best friend and love interest turned son-in-law. While Bella and Jacob’s relationship takes on many forms, their connection is undeniable. And it turns out that, in some ways, Stewart and Lautner’s personal relationship mirrored that of their characters.

Much like Bella and Jacob, Stewart and Lautner hit it off right away. In fact, Stewart has all but credited herself for casting Lautner in Twilight. Since the Spencer star was the first actor to officially join the film, she...

The duo wrote their new movie "Somebody I Used to Know" together; Franco served as director with Brie as the star. To promote the February release, the pair read thirst tweets together in a Feb. 17 video for BuzzFeed.
In the video, Brie reads a fan's tweet to her husband: "Listen I am bisexual for a reason and that reason is strictly to be used in a threesome by dave franco and alison brie." The duo high five, and Brie says, "That's also why I'm bisexual." Franco teases his wife for choosing this moment to share this fact, saying, "You've been waiting for this tweet from someone you don't know who they are or what they look like?"

Christmas is quickly approaching, with Netflix having released its yearly selection of original festive romantic comedies.
Over the last few years we’ve seen the streaming service take inspiration from the likes of Hallmark and Lifetime to produce cookie-cutter Christmas romcoms guaranteed to numb your mind like one too many mulled wines.
Revolutionary these films are not, but boy, do they hit the spot during the festive season. With titles like The Princess Switch, The Knight Before Christmas and A Castle for Christmas on offer, audiences have learnt that no plot is too ludicrous for a Netflix Christmas romcom. The more time travel, magic, döppelgangers and fictional European royalty on offer, the better.
With that in mind, I’m taking a look at Netflix’s in-house Christmas romcoms and ranking them based on just how ridiculous they are. This list has also been updated for 2022, which means this is the...

Sony has revealed that 3000 Pictures’ “Where the Crawdads Sing” will open in China beginning Nov. 25, a rare booking for a Hollywood film as the nation has cut back on foreign releases.
The Reese Witherspoon-produced melodrama, about a young outcast who finds herself embroiled in a murder trial, has already earned 140.2 million worldwide. That is nearly six times its 24 million production budget in global theatrical revenue alone, so anything from China can be treated as glorified “found money.”
Based on Delia Owens’s bestselling novel, director Olivia Newman and writer Lucy Alibar’s period piece was notable last summer for being among the only mainstream theatrical releases from, for and about women. In a summer ruled by mavericks, minions, superheroes and space rangers, the Daisy Edgar-Jones vehicle opened with 17.25 million debut weekend in mid-July and legged out to 90.2 million domestic.

American Film Market title “The Young King” struts into the halls of the Loews Hotel with a rarely depicted showbiz character as its lead. “It’s the first movie to feature a drag king as a protagonist,” said its producers Kim Bailey and Isabel Marden of L.A.-based Corporate Witchcraft.
The pic stars Michael Shannon, Kiersey Clemons and Barbie Ferreira, and is the feature debut of Larin Sullivan, who also wrote the screenplay. It’s set in the drag king scene of ‘90s Las Vegas, where Clemons’ character, Jules, aspires to become a drag king. This does not sit well with her estranged father (Shannon), a gambler and part-time children’s party clown, who sees his daughter not only presenting herself as male but also vying for the attentions of his dancer-friend Ronnie (Ferreira).
Speaking of what inspired her to write the story, Sullivan explained: “When I was coming...

Exclusive: Mary Holland (Senior Year) has signed on to star alongside Amy Adams and Scoot McNairy in Searchlight Pictures’ darkly comic horror Nightbitch, based on the debut novel of Rachel Yoder. Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) is directing from her own script.
The film, now in production, tells the story of a woman thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler in the suburbs who slowly embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, as she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a canine. Bond Group and Annapurna acquired film rights to Yoder’s book in 2020 and developed the script alongside Heller. Searchlight then acquired worldwide rights in May, in a deal sources placed at 25 million-plus; it marked a reemergence of Megan Ellison’s reconfigured Annapurna in the marketplace.

Clea DuVall is looking back on the legacy of the 1999 cult classic film “But I’m a Cheerleader.”
The gay conversion camp rom-com co-starring Natasha Lyonne proved to be a pivotal turn in DuVall’s career, but also a “scary time” for the actress, who was still publicly closeted.
“So many opportunities came to me because of [‘But I’m a Cheerleader’] that I didn’t take because I was afraid,” DuVall told The Independent while discussing the new ’90s-set Freevee via Amazon Prime Video series “High School,” which she co-wrote and co-directed based on artists Tegan and Sara’s novel.
“I was very closeted and very afraid of people finding out I was gay,” DuVall said. “It was the Nineties, there was no conversation about sexuality – you were just not going to talk about it.”

While queer comedians have been the hottest thing in stand-up for the last decade, it’s no secret that Hollywood is always the last one to get the joke.
As the likes of Kate McKinnon, Billy Eichner, and Bowen Yang ascended from New York’s musty improv theaters to the casts of “Saturday Night Live” and Disney remakes, the last decade has brought a remarkable shift in not only queer visibility but something far more substantial — queer influence. Queer TV shows like “The Other Two,” “Search Party,” and “Schitt’s Creek” reflect this sea change, but so far movies have been much slower on the uptake.
That all changes this year, with the release of two mainstream comedy movies from gay writers who also star in their projects. While Eichner’s major studio rom-com “Bros” is set to hit theaters in September, Joel Kim Booster’s “Fire Island” opens Pride month...

Premiering in 2020, “The Circle” is a US Netflix reality TV show based on the popular British series of the same name. Each season a group of strangers enters a colorfully decorated apartment building and engages in chats, games and blockings with each other all while remaining completely anonymous. In “The Circle,” you can choose to play as yourself or as someone entirely different, aka a catfish. Michelle Buteau hosts the fun and flirty program, though she doesn’t get to officially meet the contestants until the finale, when the 100,000 prize is given to the player who the others rated the highest. There are various other versions of the social media game show around the world, including in France and Brazil, but the photo gallery above highlights “The Circle” winners and finalists from the US Netflix seasons.
