Few things are more aggravating than when you find yourself in need of a tow truck. Regardless of how excellent the towing agent is, there’s always a hassle waiting around the corner to cost you money, time, and sanity. Pop star and screen actor Demi Lovato is about to learn the brutal ways of the road by joining the cast of Tow, a new drama from director Stephanie Laing.
Tow is Demi Lovato’s first dramatic role in a feature film. Rose Byrne and The Holdovers breakout Dominic Sessa join Lovato for the project, which is based on a true story. Tow stars Byrne as Amanda Ogle, “an unhoused Seattle woman who fought her way out of tow-company hell to reclaim her life and the car that held it all together after receiving a tow bill for $21,634.” (via Deadline)

The project will see Grammy nominee Lovato take on her first dramatic role in a feature and marks BAFTA-nominee Sessa’s next project — my colleague Baz had the initial scoop on that casting last month — after his acclaimed screen debut in five-time Oscar nominee The Holdovers.
As we revealed ahead of the European Film Market, Tow will see Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Byrne portray the true story of Amanda Ogle, an unhoused Seattle woman who fought her way out of tow-company hell to reclaim her life and the car that held it all together after receiving a tow bill for $21,634. Despite being significantly hit by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, U.K. film studios and production facilities are looking to pick back up where they left off after a record-breaking year for film and high-end television production spend in 2022.
When asked what the industry can expect in terms of business in the year ahead, Samantha Perahia, head of production U.K. at the British Film Commission, says she feels positive that demand “is going to be ramping up.”
She continues, “We already know that some of our studio facilities in the U.K. are getting very busy. While not every facility in the U.K. is jampacked again, there seems to be some momentum now, which is very welcome.”
The production spend in the U.K. jumped from £726 million ($376 million) in 2016 to $7.8 billion in 2022. At the same time, the U.K. considerably expanded its studio and stage provision to...

Harper Steele is, with no exaggeration, one of my favorite comedy writers to ever do it. Not only did she write on "Saturday Night Live" from 1995-2015, the years when I was developing my own sense of humor, but she's also behind the Lifetime film "A Deadly Adoption" and the Academy Award-nominated Netflix flick, "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga." She was also a writer on the "Doug" episode "Doug's Cool Shoes," which has some of the best visual joke-telling of the animated series' first season. This is to say that Steele has been formative in shaping my ability to find humor in the world around me.
Over the years, Steele has become best friends with Will Ferrell, arguably one of the most recognizable comedic actors in the world. Ferrell and Steele are frequent collaborators, and their latest project is "Will & Harper," a documentary about the pair...

Will Ferrell and longtime friend Harper Steele discussed the origins of their road-trip documentary Will & Harper at The Hollywood Reporter’s studio during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
Ferrell and Steele have been best friends for 30 years and worked together at Saturday Night Live when they were both launching their Hollywood careers in comedy. Their new film documents the pair taking a cross-country road trip together following Steele coming out as a trans woman.
“The conception of the whole discussion, for some reason in my head, was a documentary,” Ferrell said. “Of course, I made it clear to Harper, ‘I don’t want to exploit our friendship, but this could, I think, be just a wonderful way for us to explore this topic. Obviously, for me to learn, ask all the questions that I have about what you’re going through and who you are, have you changed?'”

Will Ferrell called for women to take over the world as he opened The Hollywood Reporter’s annual Women in Entertainment gala, presented by Lifetime, on Thursday at The Beverly Hills Hotel.
“This is such a wonderful event where we honor and support and continue to fight for women in all facets of the entertainment world,” said Ferrell before adding, “Forget about the entertainment world, isn’t it just time? Isn’t it just time for women to run the planet?” he asked to resounding applause. “I’m not just trying to placate you, I swear, but I don’t know what else to do because we — men — we’ve been running the show since, what, 10,000 B.C., and we’re not doing so good. Dan Stevens is officially taking over the lead voice role in Hulu’s “Solar Opposites” from Justin Roiland.
Roiland, who co-created the animated series, was fired from the show in January after it was revealed he was being charged with domestic violence. He was also removed from the Hulu animated show “Koala Man” at that time. The charges against Roiland were dismissed in March.
Stevens will play Korvo, described as “a grouchy alien who always wears ceremonial robes and professes to hate Earth. He desperately wants to fix their spaceship so he can escape to a new planet.”
A first look video featuring Stevens can be seen below.
He joins fellow cast members Thomas Middleditch, Sean Giambrone, and Mary Mack. Season 4 will debut on August 14, and the show has already been renewed for Season 5.

Will Ferrell has said he wants to take his mom to the Eurovision Song Contest next year in Liverpool – if he can find somewhere for them to stay.
“It’s in Liverpool this year, right?” Ferrell, who appeared in “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga,” asked radio host Zoe Ball while stopping into her BBC show on Tuesday morning. “My mother really wants me to take her to Eurovision, she’s dying to go and she’s always wanted to go to Liverpool.”
But the actor and comedian was concerned he might not be able to find any accommodation in Liverpool given the scale of the event. “Aren’t all the hotels booked by now?” he asked before appealing to locals to host him. “We just need a clean tidy room. We’ll share a room. With just two bunk beds that’s all we need,” he said.

Seann Walsh has opened up about the cheating scandal that torpedoed his comedy career during Thursday’s (10 November) episode of I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!
In 2018, the comic was filmed kissing his Strictly Come Dancing coach Katya Jones while the pair were in pre-existing relationships.
Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver asked Walsh about the tabloid backlash to the scandal, asking the comedian: “Why did that crucify you? Why did that have such an impact?”
In response, Walsh said: “To be totally honest with you, my poor ex, my girlfriend at the time, posted a statement. My girlfriend [at the time] posted a statement and that was the end of me.”
Walsh was in a long-term relationship with actor Rebecca Humphries at the time and Jones was married to fellow Strictly pro Neil Jones. They split up in 2019 and, just last month, Humphries appeared on Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table...

(We’ve heard the show-stopping and sincere performance of “Time to Say Goodbye” in “Step Brothers” or the hammy songs in Netflix’s “Eurovision” movie.) Thankfully, we now have the giddy song and dance of Sean Anders’ Christmas musical “Spirited,” which gives Ferrell’s tender tenor plenty of heartfelt scenes that allow him to be cartoonish but also musically sentimental.

When the coronavirus pandemic arrived in Iceland last year, shutting down production on Netflix’s eight-part supernatural volcano drama “Katla,” veteran filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur was quick to rise to the challenge.
With the support of the streaming giant, Kormákur came up with measures that would allow the production to get up and running again, introducing frequent testing and devising a color-coded system to control the flow of cast and crew on set.
Since then, there’s been no looking back for Kormákur and his Rvk Studios, which produced the series. “I never worked more than the year of the pandemic,” he tells Variety. “We never stopped shooting.”
It’s the latest indication that the Nordic nation known for its dramatic, other-worldly landscapes remains a hot spot for international productions, lured by highly-skilled, English-speaking crews, top-notch infrastructure, and a 25% cash rebate on qualifying spend that has been praised for its speed and efficiency.

Condragulations are in order for Irish presenter Graham Norton, who’s set to host “Queen of the Universe,” a new unscripted international drag queen singing competition, Variety can reveal.
Produced by “RuPaul’s Drag Race” producers World of Wonder, the Eurovision-style series finds countries going head to head with their top drag queens putting their real singing voices to the test (no lip synching here!).
Early promotional materials for the show teased: “High heels, high octaves, high competition — this drag queen singing competition will blow your wig off.” Interestingly, drag has been a recurring sight on the Eurovision stage, with Austria’s Conchita Wurst taking the crown in 2014 with her song “Rise Like a Phoenix.”
Norton, the beloved host of long-running, star-studded talk show “The Graham Norton Show,” is no stranger to the “Drag Race” world, having judged the BBC’s enormously successful “RuPaul’s Drag Race U.K.” alongside RuPaul,...

Dan Stevens is a unique actor, clearly motivated by the material and almost nothing else. At the height of his fame on “Downton Abbey,” the actor walked away from the show, believing he would just have much more opportunity for diverse roles if he weren’t locked into the series. And he’s done just about everything since, comedy in “Eurovision,” a spastic riff on superheroes in FX‘s “Legion,” horror in “The Rental,” and more.

I’m an Israeli father of two young boys here in Tel Aviv. I love them to bits. I know that across the border in Gaza there’s a Palestinian father with kids who feels the same way about his. I know we both want to protect them more than anything. Like me, I’m sure he tells them this awful conflict will be over one day, with today’s ceasefire being a welcome first step in that direction.
The rockets have been flying — thousands hurled at Israel by Hamas, the Islamic fundamentalist group hell-bent on our destruction which has masterfully managed to garner sympathy from around the world. We view it as a hijacking of the Palestinians who most of us here see as innocent victims of a terror group. A people with whom, we personally have nothing against and would love to leave with in peace, were it not for Hamas.

At the best of times, the massively popular Eurovision Song Contest, the world’s largest music event, is a logistical challenge to produce, with many moving parts.
But amid a global pandemic, the undertaking is downright bold, with stringent safety measures including distancing, sanitization, Covid-19 Pcr tests, and all the jargon that has now become commonplace in the lexicon adding to the enormity of the enterprise.
The team behind the European Broadcasting Union show is equal to the job at hand. Martin Österdahl, a senior TV executive with two decades of experience, including producing the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 and 2016 and the Nobel Prize ceremony, was appointed executive supervisor for the event in 2020. Due to the rapid spread of the pandemic, it was canceled that year, and the contest’s location, Rotterdam, was rolled over into 2021.

Michaela Coel is best known as a creator of great art, with “I May Destroy You” and “Chewing Gum,” but she’s also a consumer. And her taste in movies, television, podcasts and books is as varied in tone as that of her work. Iceland’s big bid for an Academy Award this year is the show-stopping, soaring ballad “Husavik (My Hometown)” from the Netflix movie “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.” Written by Fat Max Gsus, Rickard Göransson, and Savan Kotecha, the track is up for Best Original Song at the Oscars, and Swedish pop star Molly Sandén got the chance to belt it out during a glorious pre-taped performance that took place in the real town of Husavik. While the performance aired during the Academy Awards pre-show, you can watch it below.
In the lead-up to the Academy Awards, Icelanders have rallied behind the song from the spoofy comedy starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams. Husavik, a town of just about 2,300 people, began staging a grassroots Oscar campaign earlier this year.
“It’s such a beautiful song about our town,” Örlygur Örlygsson, a local entrepreneur spearheading the campaign, told the Associated Press.

Outside of the wildly unpredictable Best Actress race, there is one other Oscar category that feels somewhat up in the air: Best Original Song. The odds will tell you otherwise: “Speak Now” from “One Night in Miami” is the overwhelming favorite with 10/3 odds and more than 3,200 votes. No other nominee — “Io Si (Seen)” from “The Life Ahead,” “Husavik” from “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga,” “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah” and “Hear My Voice” from “The Trial of the Chicago 7” — has more than 900.
And yet there is no prevalent feeling that “Speak Now” is a lock here because this category is, um, very soft. Which is why you’d be a fool to count out “Husavik.” “Eurovision” is the least Oscar-friendly of the nominated films, but “Husavik” could very well have a thrilling moment in the sun like Lars (Will Ferrell) and Sigrit (Rachel McAdams) do.

As diligently as actors and crew work on set, it’s commonplace to re-record some lines down the road. For the teams behind “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” the process of painstakingly matching audio and visual was further complicated by working remotely during Covid.
Eliza Pollack Zebert, supervising Adr and dialogue editor on “Eurovision,” says the L.A.-based team ran remote recording sessions. At times, they even had actors in entirely different countries, with lead Rachel McAdams in Atlanta and her singing stand-in Molly Sanden in Sweden.
While all watching the same playback, the post-production team coached the pair through re-recording the lines and songs as exactingly as possible to match the syllables and intonations from McAdams’ original take.

Sometimes the backstories of Oscar-nominated songs are as compelling as the songs themselves.
Last week, the Songwriters Hall of Fame corralled nine of this year’s 12 nominated songwriters for a round-table discussion of how their songs came to be written, and how they feel about contributing to the art of cinema.
Paul Williams, Oscar winner (“Evergreen”) and president and chairman of the board of ASCAP, and Nile Rodgers, Grammy-winning producer-writer and Songwriters Hall of Fame chairman, were co-moderators of the hour-long panel.

Writer-director Aaron Sorkin’s script had the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun” as an optimistic end-title song which, composer Daniel Pemberton said, “was probably not going to work.” Seeking an original idea, he thought, “How do you take this very complicated story and make it very simple, with a song that hits people directly, and has a deeper meaning?...

The Swedish Mafia is coming to the Oscars. No, we don’t mean the euro house supergroup Swedish House Mafia, we’re talking about songwriters and producers, Rickard Göransson, Savan Kotecha and Fat Max Gsus. The trio is part of a group of Swedish or Swedish-adjacent musicians who have collaborated on some of the biggest pop hits over the past decade. Now, they are slightly unexpected nominees in the Best Original Song category for “Husavik (My Hometown)” from the Netflix comedy “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.”

Dan Stevens has been cast in the Starz series “Gaslit,” which will tell the story of the Watergate scandal, Variety has learned from sources.
Stevens joins previously announced cast members Julia Roberts and Sean Penn. Roberts will star as Martha Mitchell, the protagonist and the celebrity Arkansan socialite who was one of the first to publicly sound the alarm on Nixon’s involvement in Watergate in spite of her affiliation to the president via her husband, Attorney General John Mitchell, who will be played by Penn.
Stevens will star as John Dean. Described as a hotshot upstart, Dean is the young White House Counsel torn between his ambition and his struggle with whether he can lie to protect the President. Armie Hammer had previously been cast as Dean, but it was announced he was no longer involved with the project when it was picked up to series in February.
Starz declined to comment.

Everyone in the music business is wondering the same thing: Could veteran songwriter Diane Warren, denied the Oscar 11 times over the past 33 years, finally win on her 12th try?
Warren, whose movie songs range from Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me” to Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing,” this year penned “Io Sì (Seen)” for Netflix’s “The Life Ahead.” Sung in Italian by co-lyricist Laura Pausini, it could become only the fourth foreign-language song to win.
But it’s far from a sure thing. Only one song (“Husavik” from “Eurovision Song Contest”) is actually performed during the film itself, and that can be a potent factor for voters; and the other three relate to the social-justice issues of the 1960s that continue to be relevant today. All but Warren are first-time nominees.
“Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah”

Everyone in the music business is wondering the same thing: Could veteran songwriter Diane Warren, denied the Oscar 11 times over the past 33 years, finally win on her 12th try?

Pierce Brosnan is taking on his first role as a superhero. The actor has been cast as Dr. Fate in DC and New Line’s “Black Adam” alongside Dwayne Johnson, who is playing the titular role.
Dr. Fate, also known as Kent Nelson, is a founding member of the Justice Society who gains superpowers through putting on the magical Helmet of Fate. The casting of Brosnan completes the lineup for the Justice Society of America, with Aldis Hodge playing Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher and Quintessa Swindell taking on Cyclone.
“Black Adam” follows the story of the anti-hero of the same name, played by Johnson. The character of Black Adam first appeared in DC Comics in the 1940s as a power-corrupt villain, and slowly became an anti-hero by the 2000s, known for his disregard of rules and conventions.
“Black Adam” is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who also directed Johnson in Disney’s “Jungle Cruise.

Pierce Brosnan will play Dr. Fate in New Line/DC’s highly anticipated “Black Adam” film starring Dwayne Johnson, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Dr. Fate, a.k.a. Kent Nelson, was the final piece of casting left to round out the Justice Society of America, and when he dons the Helmet of Fate, it will be for his first ever superhero role. It was previously announced that Aldis Hodge has been cast as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone.
Sarah Shahi has also been cast as Adrianna Tomaz and Marwan Kenzari is in talks to play the villain.
The first look at how the Justice Society will appear onscreen came on last summer during Warner Bros.’ virtual Comic-Con alternative, DC FanDome, courtesy of two “Black Adam” teasers introduced by Johnson. The clips, which were motion-comics created entirely using concept art,...

When Oscar nominations were announced March 15, mainstream-media headlines focused on the usual topics: best picture, the four acting categories and Hollywood’s current obsession, inclusion. These are all worth talking about, but the Msm virtually ignores one key element every year: The artisans.
Those individuals are key to a movie’s success, as everyone in the industry knows. The artisans are also important to Oscar: They constitute one-third of the 9,000-plus voters in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, which means their votes are crucial.
These nine categories also beef up a contender’s bragging rights. Netflix’s “Mank” was the nom leader with 10 — and six of those were in below-the-line races. Of the other seven best picture contenders, each had at least one Btl nomination.
Aside from “Mank’s” team, almost all of the artisans who worked on the year’s best-pic roster are first-time Oscar contenders, ranging...

The time has come to find out the nominations for the 93rd Academy Awards. While the 2021 Oscars ceremony was originally set for February 28, the Academy decided to delay the event to late April to accommodate the pandemic upending much of the theatrical release calendar in 2020. Because of the pandemic, the eligibility window for the 2021 Oscars was extended from January 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021, two months longer than normal. The Oscars are also allowing films that debuted on streaming or PVOD platforms to compete for Oscars, so long as they originally planned for a theatrical release.
Last year’s Oscars were a historic event as Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” made history in a number of top categories, including becoming the first non-English-language movie to win Best Picture. Bong also became the first Korean filmmaker to earn the Best Director prize. Many in the industry viewed the “Parasite” Oscar wins as a watershed moment for the Academy,...
