Christian Petzold’s anticipated Miroirs No.3 and Kaouther Ben Hania’s epic love story Mimesi are among the 19 projects awarded a total funding of almost €3.5m by Germany’s Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (Mbb) at the second funding session of 2024.
Miroirs No.3 will star Paula Beer in her fourth collaboration with Petzold after Transit, Undine and Afire. She will play a young music student who has to restructure her life when her boyfriend dies in a car crash in the countryside.
The film, which is being produced by Petzold’s production company Schramm Film Koerner Weber Kaiser, received €500,000 in production funding from Mbb.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have collaborated on a number of projects together as actor and director. Beginning their partnership with Gangs of New York, the duo went on to work on films such as The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and the recent Killers of the Flower Moon. The duo are also rumored to collaborate again on a Frank Sinatra biopic.
While the two have worked together on many projects, they have also developed projects that have never seen the light of day. One of those was apparently a biographical drama on Alexander, The Great. The two never got to make it, but the duo may have no regrets about it as Colin Farrell’s version of the film ended up almost costing the actor his career.

Despite their undeniable chemistry on screen, many have wondered why these two iconic actors hadn’t collaborated earlier. When asked about the same during an interview, the Fight Club star offered a playful response, humorously suggesting the reason behind their prolonged absence from joint projects.

Martin Scorsese isn’t exactly known for his love of sports, once saying, “Anything with a ball, no good.” But he is now embracing the Super Bowl — well, a commercial, anyway. That’s right, Martin and his daughter Francesca Scorsese have their own Super Bowl commercial, leaning in to the TikTok videos that showed a (hip?) new side of Scorsese.
In the teaser for their upcoming Super Bowl ad for website maker Squarespace (which you can watch at the bottom of this article), Martin Scorsese is approached by Francesca while the maestro tries to develop a short film. One of the characters, he says, is a website…only Scorsese doesn’t know anything about them (or their character motivation). As for what his website will be about?: “A plea for intergalactic connection.” After quite a monologue about extraterrestrials, Scorsese tries to wrap his head around phrases like “domain” and...

Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of their first screen collaboration (“Mean Streets”), actor Robert De Niro and director Martin Scorsese reunited in 2023 to make “Killers of the Flower Moon,” thus bringing their amount of shared feature film credits to an even 10. Although their latest joint effort constitutes a rare instance of Scorsese employing De Niro’s talents in a supporting capacity, his new role is far from the shortest he’s played for the director, both in terms of actual time on screen and percentage of the total film. Check out our photo gallery in which we rank all 10 of De Niro’s Scorsese-directed performances from shortest to longest.
De Niro worked with Scorsese three times in the 1970s, twice in the ‘80s, and three times in the ‘90s before the duo took a two-decade collaboration hiatus. After De Niro starred as himself in Scorsese’s 2015 short film, “The Audition,...

Interestingly but not surprisingly, the acclaimed director Martin Scorsese has used a very special combination to shoot the masterpiece ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’. The movie was shot by his cinematic partner, Rodrigo Prieto Stambaugh, ASC, AMC, on the Arricam (St & Lt), combined with the Sony Venice and Scorsese’s own 1917 Bell & Howell.

Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ is one of the contenders for the 96th Academy Awards (Oscar 2024). The movie is a 2023 American epic revisionist Western crime drama that is based on the 2017 book of the same name by David Grann. Its plot centers on a series of Oklahoma murders in the Osage Nation during the 1920s, committed after oil was discovered on tribal land. After nearly a decade, one of cinema’s most iconic filmmaking duos is back together again. “Killers of the Flower Moon” sees Martin Scorsese return to cinemas for his first film since 2019’s “The Irishman,” along with the two actors whose screen presence has helped define his filmography. The first is Robert De Niro, his longtime muse since his breakout film “Mean Streets” in 1973. The second is the much younger Leonardo DiCaprio, who reunites with the older statesman 10 years after “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
Scorsese is no stranger to building up a production posse of frequent collaborators. And there are many actors who made frequent appearances in his work, including Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel. But De Niro and DiCaprio are his two clear muses, serving as the leads in 15 of his 26 narrative feature films between the two of them. “Killers of the Flower Moon” is Martin Scorsese’s 27th feature-length narrative film, and it seems as though the famed director, now 80, is only getting better with age. The rave reviews of Scorsese’s latest movie, as well as its $23 million opening, indicate that his powers as an artist are far from declining. And while much of the critics’ praise is reserved for star Lily Gladstone, audiences will no doubt be drawn into theaters by the return of two of Scorsese’s most frequent collaborators: Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

Killers of the Flower Moon marks the 10th feature collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro and the sixth between the maestro and Leonardo DiCaprio. But it will be the first big screen teaming for all three and with that came a wave of excitement from cinephiles. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t some minor personality clashes on set, as Scorsese revealed that DiCaprio’s constant improvisations and looser style led to the director and De Niro rolling their eyes behind his back.
In a new piece in The Wall Street Journal, Scorsese said DiCaprio brought an “endless, endless, endless!” amount of ad-libbing, which prompted De Niro to further delve into his own trademark ways. “Then Bob didn’t want to talk. Every now and then, Bob and I would look at each other and roll our eyes a little bit. And we’d tell him, ‘You don’t need that dialogue.

“The clouds lifted” for cinema’s future recently. At least that was how Martin Scorsese felt after he saw “TÁR,” on which he lavished praise at the New York Film Critics Circle awards dinner in early January 2023.
That kind of praise means a lot. Scorsese is not just one of the greatest filmmakers of all time: he’s one of its greatest cinephiles. In recent years, he’s become known for the movies — or, as he might say of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “theme parks” — he doesn’t enjoy. But the Oscar-winning director’s favorite films are as wide-ranging in genre, year of release, and national origin as you might imagine, from Ti West’s “Pearl” to the horror flicks of Val Lewton and the works of Senegalese master Djibril Diop Mambety. When Leonardo DiCaprio introduced the Life Achievement Award at the Screen Actors Guild annual ceremony in 2020, he recalled his father taking him to the cinema to watch "Midnight Run" when he was 13 years old. During the film, his dad said to him:
"If you really want to be an actor and get into this profession, if you want to understand what great acting is, you watch that man on screen."
No, he wasn't talking about Charles Grodin; he was referring to the actor honored that night for his legendary career, Robert De Niro. A few years after that trip to the movie house, DiCaprio found himself starring alongside the legendary actor in "This Boy's Life." Los Angeles, May 18 (Ians) Martin Scorsese reunites with longtime muses Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in the first trailer for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, the upcoming Western epic based on David Grann’s 2017 best-selling non-fiction book ‘Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI’, reports ‘Variety’.
Set in 1920s Oklahoma, the drama focuses on a series of Osage Nation murders over oil rights and the newly-formed FBI’s investigation into the killings. The supporting cast includes Jesse Plemons, last seen in the much-applauded ‘The Power of the Dog’, and ‘Certain Women’ breakout Lily Gladstone, ‘Variety’ adds.
For DiCaprio and De Niro, ‘Flower Moon’ marks the first time the Oscar winners have worked together in a feature since Michael Caton-Jones’ 1993 drama ‘This Boy’s Life’.
Both actors, according to ‘Variety’, played fictionalised versions of themselves in Scorsese’s short film ‘The Audition’.

This year’s Killers of the Flower Moon marks the 10th major collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, it further solidifies the pair as one of the most iconic director/actor teams in cinema history. But that doesn’t mean it comes easy, as sometimes they just aren’t feeling it.
Scorsese and De Niro had an incredible run beginning with 1973’s Mean Streets, with classics like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and more following. But after 1995’s Casino, the collaborations seemed to wear cement shoes. The reason? As Scorsese tells Deadline, sometimes there’s just a general disinterest from one of the parties.
Explaining why it took 24 years between collaborations–Scorsese and De Niro didn’t work together again until 2019’s The Irishman–the director said, “After Casino we stopped for a while and I did Kundun, and Bringing Out the Dead. And then Gangs of New York.

Whether you view him as the patron saint of filmmaking or politely respect the man and his contributions to cinema without worshipping him at the shrine, there's no denying that Martin Scorsese's new film, "Killers of the Flower Moon," is a pretty momentous occasion. It's the first time the director has collaborated with both of his muses, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, on a feature-length project, having previously teamed up with them on his 2015 meta-comedy short "The Audition." But why did it take so long?
It wasn't for lack of trying. By the time Scorsese had begun his run with DiCaprio in the early 2000s (which is now six films deep), De Niro had entered what you could dub his comedy phase. Starting with Harold Ramis' 1999 comedy "Analyze This," a movie in which De Niro knowingly sends up his mobster personas in Scorsese's "Goodfellas" and "Casino," the actor...

Casting directors typically work offscreen, sifting through dozens, if not hundreds, of self-taped auditions and in-person sessions to find the perfect performers for each pivotal role. But what if the perfect performer is the casting director? What if they’re asked to act on not one, but two Emmy-nominated HBO comedies? What if, rather than sitting behind a desk, they’re asked to sit behind a desk in front of a camera?

Selena Lee, Kenny Kwan, and Adam Pak lead the cast of “Tape,” a Cantonese-language remake of the Richard Linklater drama film that debuted in 2001. The new film is to be directed by Bizhan Tong with cameras set to roll next month in Hong Kong.
“Tape” tells the story of 3 best friends who, following an event at a graduation party that transforms their lives, reunite 15 years later where a case of blackmail forces them to confront a terrible secret from their past.
The original film starred Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Robert Sean Leonard and played at the Sundance, Toronto and Rotterdam festivals.
In Tong’s remake, Kwan, Lee, and Pak play the contemporary characters while Mason Fung, Summer Chan, and Angus Yeung portray their younger versions.
The script is written by Stephen Belber, Tong, Lee and Bonnie Lo, and is an adaptation of Belber’s own scripts from both the original film and stage play.

Alfred Hitchcock’s magnum opus film, Psycho is returning to cinemas from today, 27th May. This stunning 4K restoration of the original theatrical cut includes an extra 13 seconds of restored footage – so it can once again be seen as it was originally shown in cinemas back in 1960, exactly as intended by Hitchcock. To celebrate, here are ten things you probably didn’t know about Psycho:
Melon-terror! What did Alfred Hitchcock use to create an authentically terrifying stabbing sound? A melon. Specifically, a casaba melon. Hitchcock and his sound guy are said to have tested all kinds of melons before settling on the casaba – its thick skin gives a denser sound than other varieties. This, combined with a slab of steak, proved the perfect combination. Body Double: in the iconic shower scene, Playboy cover girl Marli Renfro had the uncredited role of Janet Leigh’s body double – and it is her...

As well as providing a showcase for international films, the Berlinale is also a platform for German cinema. There are more than 130 German films and co-productions screening across the festival and the European Film Market.
Pre-pandemic, in 2019, 237 German films were produced a year, but only 10 to 20 a year perform well internationally, according to Simone Baumann, managing director of German Films, which promotes Teutonic movies abroad. Of the total worldwide admissions for European films in 2019, 6% were German films, compared with 18% for French films, according to the European Audiovisual Observatory.
To up the performance of local films, German Films is seeking to begin its promotional work earlier in the life of a project, such as at works-in-progress sessions at festivals like Les Arcs. The objective is to catch the eye of festival programmers, distributors and sales agents at an early stage.

Strand Releasing has acquired all North American rights to Agnieszka Holland’s critically acclaimed “Charlatan” from Berlin-based company Films Boutique.
“Charlatan” competed at the Berlin Film Festival this year in the Special Gala section, and was most recently selected at Telluride. “Charlatan” represents Czech Republic in the Oscar race for the best international feature film.
“Charlatan” is based on the true story of Czech healer Jan Mikolášek, who dedicated his life to treating the sick using medicinal plants. Holland has described “Charlatan” as a story about Mikolášek’s “moral fall and of his constant fight with the darkness inside him.”
“It is the story of the mystery of a man, of the mystery of his special gift, of the prize he was ready to pay for it; the story of the paradox of strength and weakness, of love and hate,” said Holland.

“It is the story of the mystery of a man, of the mystery of his special gift, of the prize he was ready to pay for it; the story of the paradox of strength and weakness, of love and hate,” said Holland.

Let the best-of-the-year lists commence. While guilds and critics groups will soon be delivering their opinions, one of the few of genuine interest each year comes from a single person: the wonderfully eccentric director John Waters, whose eclectic tastes always includes a mix of the unexpected and underseen.
Topping his list this year is Tyler Cornack’s spring release Butt Boy, which features a strange tale of missing persons potentially disappearing up someone’s rectum, followed by the recommended psychological body horror film Swallow. Also among the list are the latest films from Pedro Almodóvar, Craig Zobel, Quentin Dupieux and, as a 10th place tie leading to 11 selections, new courtroom dramas by Steve McQueen and Aaron Sorkin.
Check out the list below via Baltimore Fishbowl, which will appear in the next issue of Artforum. We’ve also included links to our reviews.

“Parasite” is an often-brutal examination of wealth inequality, and yet its Best Picture win still counts as one of the few universally uplifting moments that 2020 had to offer. This Blu-ray release from The Criterion Collection arrives fully-loaded with extras, including director Bong Joon Ho’s black-and-white rendering of the film — anything but an afterthought, it’s a version that he and cinematographer Kyung-pyo Hong had in mind all along — commentaries, interviews, and a new essay from onetime TheWrap film critic Inkoo Kang.
Also available: Cameroonian college students get pulled into the dark web to pull a “Scam République” (IndiePix); anime saga “Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna” (Shout/Toei) celebrates the franchise’s 20th anniversary; “Three Comrades” (IndiePix) go out to unwind on a Friday night and wind up on an unexpected spree.

This weekend sees a trio of new comedies arriving to streaming and video-on-demand platforms, taking viewers to the disparate worlds of European music competitions to the campaign trail to tactical espionage.
Six years after his debut feature “Rosewater” was released, Jon Stewart has re-emerged with his second film, “Irresistible,” and reunited with “The Daily Show” correspondent Steve Carell. The cast also includes Rose Byrne, Chris Cooper, Mackenzie Davis, Topher Grace and Natasha Lyonne. Since most theaters across the country remain closed due to social distancing regulations, Focus Features has decided to give the movie a home premiere and price 48-hour digital rentals at $19.99.
Both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are debuting exclusive comedies. Netflix’s “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” features Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as an Icelandic musical duo trying to make it big while competing in one of the largest music contests in the world.
