New Indie
Michael Almereyda has tackled science (as a topic of either biopics or dramas) in a fascinating way in “Experimenter” and “Marjorie Prime,” and now he’s bringing that same energy to the inventor-biopic with “Tesla” (Shout Factory/IFC), a bold and audacious look at the life of Nikola Tesla. Ethan Hawke, in the title role, is evenly matched by Eve Hewson’s Anne Morgan, and they both nail Almereyda’s unique tone, which throws in anachronisms and green-screens to tell the story of someone who stretched the notions of what his peers imagined could be possible.
Also available: Madison Iseman plays a young girl with mental-health issues who can’t convince anyone she’s witnessed a crime in “Fear of Rain” (Lionsgate); 2012 indie “Watching TV with the Red Chinese” (Mvd Visual), co-starring Constance Wu and Gillian Jacobs, makes its U.S. DVD debut; Sienna Miller and Diego Luna...

It’s funny to think that streaming services like Netflix didn’t bother creating posters for their original work a few years back knowing they’d never have to contend with competition at the local multiplex. Slowly but surely they began doing a few here or there before steadily growing to the point where it seemed they enjoyed being able to embrace out-of-the-box designs for the same reasons they avoided the process altogether.
Now we’re at the end of a calendar to forget that saw a majority of theaters shuttered for nine straight months to make it so streamers became king. Big studios pushed titles out of 2020 altogether, small studios went virtual, and Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, et al. watched subscriptions soar. Suddenly their digital multiplex formed the playground for cinematic competition and the continued creativity of poster design found itself working at the top of its game just like always.

Exclusive: Jim Gaffigan and Rhea Seehorn are starring in the upcoming sci-fi comedy drama feature Linoleum which recently wrapped production in New York under Covid-19 safety guidelines.
The film, written and directed by Colin West, is about the host of a failing children’s science TV show who attempts to fulfill his childhood dream of being an astronaut by building a rocket ship in his garage, all the while struggling to mend his relationship with his wife (Seehorn) and connecting surreal clues that not everything in his life is exactly how it seems. Chad Simpson’s Brain Scratch Productions partnered with Dennis Masel’s Storm City Films and Chadd Harbold to produce.
Stand-up comedian Gaffigan, who has been transitioning into a number of dramatic roles of late including Tesla, Them That Follow, and Chappaquiddick, plays dual roles in Linoleum as Cameron Edwin, the struggling amateur rocket engineer as well as his better looking,...

"Wish me luck, honey!" Good Deed + Cranked Up have released an official trailer for a film titled Survival Skills, a spoof comedy / mockumentary designed as a training video from the 1980s. This premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival earlier this year, and also played at Fantasia Fest this summer, as well as the Rhode Island, Horrible Imaginings, and Raindance Film Fests. "This film stems from my years of work in domestic violence, filtered through a darkly comic lens and a full-throated attack on modern American policing," says writer / director Quinn Armstrong. Survival Skills is a biting police training video expertly narrated (by Stacy Keach) like so many of the educational videos we remember fondly from back then... Lost for years and only now recovered, we meet Jim (Vayu O'Donnell), the perfect policeman in a perfect relationship in a perfect community, who gets in over his head when he tries to resolve a domestic violence case.

To say the police are not well liked by the more liberal populations of the world right now would be an understatement, but why? We all want and deserve security. No one wants to feel unsafe in or out of their own home, and yet over the last six months cities around the world have erupted in protest against well documented police brutality and abuses of power. Surely a well trained, level headed police force should be able to maintain order and establish a kind of rapport and reputation among its constituents that would render most complaints moot. But that's just not the reality, and writer/director Quinn Armstrong's Survival Skills is a slick indictment of the chasm between what should be happening and what does...

Hello everybody, what’s up? You’re listening to I Was Just Wondering With Tom Salmon! The podcast that dives into music, film and games and everything else in between.
My guest on this week’s episode is Quinn Armstrong who directed, produced and wrote his first feature-length film Survival Skills (2019) starring Stacy Keach and Vayu O’Donnell. The film tells the story of Jim, the perfect policeman and the subject of a lost 1980s training video detailing his attempts to resolve a domestic abuse case outside of the law.
We jumped into Quinn’s experience working with the police as a domestic abuse volunteer that inspired him to write and direct the film, the pitfalls of nineteen-eighties nostalgia and what’s it like directing the Hollywood legend Stacy Keach.
