Despite being off the air for half a decade, AMC’s classic period drama Mad Men has found itself in the middle of quite a busy week.
On July 1, Lionsgate, the production company behind Mad Men, cut deals with Amazon and AMC (the show’s original network) for streaming and re-run rights to the series. All 92 episodes of the show will be available to stream on Amazon Prime’s IMDb TV channel on July 15. Amazon Prime also received international rights to the show and will make it available to stream around the world soon. Meanwhile, AMC’s portion of the deal will begin in the fall and will mean that the network will be able to re-air episodes and also host them online for streaming video on demand purposes.
Additionally Starzplay will host the series in Europe, Latin America and Japan beginning Oct. 1.

An episode of Mad Men which contains blackface will remain when AMC’s signature series returns to streaming later this month. Lionsgate has added a disclaimer to the episode, which features John Slattery’s character in blackface, explaining that the scene “shows how commonplace racism was in America in 1963.”
Here is Lionsgate’s statement in full: “This episode contains disturbing images related to race in America. One of the characters is shown in blackface as part of an episode that shows how commonplace racism was in America in 1963. In its reliance on historical authenticity, the series producers are committed to exposing the injustices and inequities within our society that continue to this day so we can examine even the most painful parts of our history in order to reflect on who we are today and who we want to become. We are therefore presenting the original episode in its entirety.

Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence said today he’ll consider returning the three recently pulled episodes containing blackface to Hulu but only after the offending scenes have been edited out.
Lawrence said on a podcast today, “Twitter is like, ‘Why did you pull the whole episodes?’ Why didn’t you just edit those moments out and put them back on?’ And I said to one person, ‘It’s a pandemic. I don’t really have an editing facility up right now.’”
Joining Zach Braff and Donald Faison on their podcast Fake Doctors, Real Friends, Lawrence took responsibility for the episodes and apologized to the two actors, along with their former Scrubs costar Sarah Chalke. Listen to the segment below.
“The reason why that word showrunner exists in television is because you’re the gatekeeper,” Lawrence said, “and anything that gets allowed on a show you ultimately have to take responsibility for.

The Office creator Greg Daniels has cut a blackface scene from a 2012 episode, calling the racist trope “unacceptable” even when used as satire.
In a statement today, Daniels said, “The Office is about a group of people trying to work together with mutual respect despite the inappropriate actions of their boss and assistant manager. The show employed satire to expose unacceptable behavior and deliver a message of inclusion. Today we cut a shot of an actor wearing blackface that was used to criticize a specific racist European practice. Blackface is unacceptable and making the point so graphically is hurtful and wrong. I am sorry for the pain that caused.”
The deleted 2012 Christmas episode scene involves Rainn Wilson’s Dwight dressing up for a holiday party as Belsnickel, a Pennsylvania Dutch folkloric St. Nicolas-like character. The office mates protest when they learn that Belsnickel is typically accompanied by a blackface sidekick named Zwarte Piet,...

The heightened social and racial tensions around the world have made the calls for change louder than they’ve been for a while, and one of the ways that Hollywood has reacted is by removing movies and TV shows from circulation that could be seen as either insensitive or offensive when viewed through a modern lens.
The heavy use of Confederate imagery in The Dukes of Hazzard may see the series dropped from streaming entirely, while even classics like Gone with the Wind aren’t safe. However, one of the more contentious decisions has been Netflix’s call to pull an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia that features white characters using blackface.
