Up until recently I worked the night shift in a hotel, so I know how creepy it can feel at times, especially when you’re getting used to the place with all of the building’s odd little noises and quirks. That’s the position Gwen finds herself in.
Recently moved into the area and in need of money, she’s answered an ad for a temporary overnight position at the All Tucked Inn. The owner Teddy, who seems to be making his story up as he goes along, tells her the woman who regularly does the job has been sidelined with medical issues. He’d love to stay and help, but he has a date. But there’s nothing to worry about, this is a quiet, peaceful place where nothing ever happens.

“Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon” is a 2021 fantasy thriller film written and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour. It stars Kate Hudson, Jun Jong-seo and Ed Skrein. The film follows a mysterious woman with supernatural powers who escapes from a mental asylum and befriends a struggling single mother in New Orleans. Together, they embark on a crime spree, but their actions soon draw unwanted attention from the cops.
If you’re not familiar with her, Ana Lily Amirpour is an institution when it comes to the subversive, the sinister, and above all, designing landscapes and films with great aesthetic potential. “Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon” has the same visual potential in a film that leans more towards the artistic than the terrifying, in this particular poetry of the sinister.

Iranian diaspora directors Ali Abbasi and Ana Lily Amirpour have keenly followed the wave of protests sparked in Iran by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini for allegedly wearing a loose hijab. The filmmakers may not be in the thick of the protests, but they’re watching with a great sense of participation.
Abbasi’s film “Holy Spider,” about a family man named Saeed who becomes a serial killer as he embarks on a religious quest to “cleanse” the holy Iranian city of Mashhad of prostitutes, could not be more timely. The boundary-pushing thriller, which is short-listed for the international feature Oscar race (having been submitted by Denmark), is about a local female journalist, played by Zar Amir-Ebrahimi, who is trying to crack the case as she grows frustrated by police misogyny and apathy toward finding the murderer.

While the streaming wars continue and the pandemic’s damage still smolders around the world, indie distributors are biting the bullet. And as the American Film Market unfolds in Santa Monica, it seems like it’s harder to bring an indie feature to market than it is to find the financing and resources to produce it.
Distribution strategies have been markedly altered in the past several years, due in part from the impact of streamers and the pandemic, yet a host of indies around the world are demonstrating resilience in the face of the ongoing turbulence through canny partnerships, exploitation of platforms and savvy marketing moves.
But above all, the theatrical experience still dominates their thinking. “More than ever, cinema is where movies are watched, it’s not just ‘content,’” says Tom Quinn of Neon, which has Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness” in cinemas now. “There’s...

You only need to watch a few minutes of Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon to know it’s a film made by Ana Lily Amirpour. Her distinctive style lends itself to her ensemble, and to mark the US release of the film, we had the pleasure in speaking to not only the filmmaker herself, but a couple of the stars that signed on to tell the story. Though Kate Hudson is the Goldie Hawn’s daughter, the actress is not trying to “emulate” her mother’s career by any means.
“Contrary to how I guess it seems from the outside in, for me, our family is much more focused on emulating who we are as people,” Hudson, 43, told E! News. “Emulating the good and maybe not necessarily wanting to carry on some of the challenges, like any child growing up in the world.”
“There’s no emulating mama’s career,” the actress added. “She’s an original. She’s an icon. It’s a different generation.”

Plot: A girl with unusual powers escapes from a mental asylum and tries to make it on her own in New Orleans.
Review: In many ways, Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon feels like the perfect story for 2022. Capitalizing on the general public’s wide superhero knowledge due to all the releases over the last decade, many interesting things are possible here without a ton of backstory needed. "Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon" is likely a name many cinephiles have heard over the past few years, but don't know a lot about. That's understandable, since Ana Lily Amirpour's third feature was announced back in 2018, but didn't have its world premiere until a few years later. Premiering at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, the title has been floating around on the festival circuit and was acquired by Saban Films this past March.
While the movie is still a bit mysterious, there are some things we can piece together before its release this coming September. The first is that it will, of course, be a bit wild. After all, Amirpour had already solidified herself as a director that dives into the bizarre with "A Girl Walks Home at Night" and "The Bad Batch." The second is that it touts Kate Hudson in a role that is far from the...

"If you see this girl - do not look in her eyes!!" Saban Films has debuted a trailer for a wacky superpowers thriller titled Mona Lisa & The Blood Moon, the latest from filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour (best known for A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night). This first premiered at the 2021 Venice Film Festival a year ago, but so many critics hate that it has been forgotten until now. The film is a "mind-bending adventure" set in the swampy neon-lit streets of New Orleans. At its center is a girl with strange and dangerous abilities who escapes from a mental asylum and rejoins the chaos of modern-day civilization, on the hedonistic streets of the French Quarter. It stars Jeon Jong-seo (from Burning) as Mona, Kate Hudson, Craig Robinson, Altonio Jackson, Ed Skrein, and Evan Whitten. I really, really did not like this watching it in Venice, it's trashy and hollow and aimless.

“Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon” follows Mona Lisa (Jun Jong Seo), a teenage girl who flees a mental institution for the streets of New Orleans. Bonnie (Kate Hudson), a single mother struggling to make ends meet, takes her under her wing when she learns that Mona Lisa has supernatural abilities that might be able to make her some money.
The trailer opens with a public announcement ringing out through the halls of a facility, informing the authorities that a “violent” inmate has escaped from “the home of mentally insane adolescents.” A terrified Mona Lisa creeps out of her room and through the hallways past an oblivious guard.

The trio’s antics soon draw the attention of the cops, forcing the girl to take control of her own destiny.
The fantasy-thriller title, which also stars Ed Skrein and Evan Whitten, debuted at the Venice Film Festival last year before playing at a raft of international festivals including Zurich, Sitges, Busan, London and Gent.
Saban plans to release the film theatrically this year.

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive tracks from Jay Wadley’s Swan Song score, which is set for digital release via Lakeshore Records on December 17—the same day that the Apple Original Film premieres in theaters and globally on Apple TV+. Nine instant grat tracks will be available with every preorder.
The first feature from Oscar-winning writer-director Benjamin Cleary is set in the near future and centers on Cameron (Mahershala Ali), a loving husband and father diagnosed with a terminal illness who is presented with an alternative solution by his doctor (Glenn Close) to shield his family from grief. As Cam grapples with whether or not to alter his family’s fate, he ends up learning more about life and love than he ever imagined he would.
For the film marking his first collaboration with Cleary, Wadley looked to evoke deeply felt emotions, maintaining at the same time a sense of space and minimalism.
