Disturbingly unengaging
pob7522 January 2023
I am genuinely amazed at how unengaging and superficial this film felt. It surprises me that a film with this subject can be so uninvolving and unaffecting. Just about everything is well below standard - music, acting, dialogue, editing..... etc. There is not one area where it feels like there has been real skill applied.

It is very difficult to try and imagine what the director thought he was showing. We jump around in time and characters have not even been aged. We follow (a very unconvincing) Mengele more than the title character. Most scenes seem to have been filmed against a shed wall. All the sets feel small and there are no wider shots or context. The sets, the costumes and the actors just do not convince in any way.

I won't even bother addressing historical inaccuracies and the ridiculousness of some scenes because the film never gets the viewer to a point where those things matter - it never grabs you or gives any convincing sense of even one character to latch on to or care about.

There is no atmosphere. No sense of any realism. Women deliver nice clean babies without breaking a sweat. A short, lazy scene showing the pre-Auschwitz life of characters does not automatically give them life or create empathy. A few wipes with a muddy cloth on your actors' legs will not suffice to convey that they are people suffering in Auschwitz.

I have learnt one thing. I know now it is possible to make a film about Auschwitz and leave the viewer almost completely emotionally untouched. I wouldn't have believed it before this.

Slow. Dreary. Awful soundtrack music.
bobwarn-938-5586729 August 2021
The subject matter is horrific. Especially when the viewer knows that Mengele got away. I expected more from this movie but it has no structure. Just a sequence of scenes to a music soundtrack like an electric motor. The subject matter deserves a far better treatment.

Halt!!!
notsomori19 September 2021
I had my eyes drawn to my phone as I heard the woman in the movie moaning in distress. I assumed that she just found out that her child was murdered by the gestapo or something like that. But when I looked up, I realized that she had just given birth to a baby. A natural child birth- labor to a full term baby!

That's when I decided to turn the movie off. But not until after I got to witness the acting of a young Dr. Mengele.

Let's just say it's a good thing that I got to watch this for free. Well 20 minutes of it anyway.. Everyone should get the oppurtunity to watch a clip of it atleast once! This way they can find a real appreciation for actors like, Tom Hanks and Glenn Close!! Now there's an idea.

War is awful, this film is worse.
bader40-616-9543915 August 2019
The best films are tailored to play upon your emotions. Tragedies such as Macbeth evoke sympathy for the tragic hero, and a cathartic element upon its dénouement. Films of conflict immerse you into the horrors of war and the emotions of desperation and helplessness. Amongst this number of emotion-wrenching films is the Angel of Auschwitz, but I regret to inform you for all the wrong reasons.

Firstly, you are subjected to its soundtrack, perhaps unnerving at times (and deliberately so, because of the film topic.) However, what irradiates from the music is how it is so abysmally composed. The "music," often merely composing of two notes in a loop, serves as a nuisance rather than a contribution to the emotional value of the film, bringing all the grace and purpose of a wasp at a picnic. Instantly, you're annoyed and uncomfortable. The music does little to draw you into the claustrophobic, suffocating environment, rather detaches you from it, rendering you a slave to the timer on the DVD box. You will watch it often, if you decide to go the distance.

The actors' depictions of historical characters are often verging on offensive. Whilst the protagonist admittedly has a slither of character depth about her, the other actors look like they have won a "be an actor for the day" competition in a magazine. Josef Mengele embodies this: "The Angel of Death," one of the most sadistic figures of the Holocaust, is transformed into a character designed for comedic value. His German accent is so insulting it appears deliberately poor, and his dialogue will leave the viewer chortling - "Curiosity killed ze cat, that is why I'm not verking with felines" stands out as a particular highlight. The viewer is left questioning their moral fabric - why did I just laugh at a film about the Holocaust? The existential questions about your existence that this film makes you ask - am I a sociopath? Do I deserve to go to prison for laughing at mass-genocide? Are not appreciated, and are by-products of the amateurish production quality.

Speaking of which, the attempts to mask the modest production value of this film are mediocre. You'll realise that that time you left the garden gate open before you left to go shopping was a major oversight, when you recognise they're using your shed as Auschwitz concentration camp. Did you not notice merry Mengele and his crew in the bushes before you left? They could all probably fit in that bush comfortably mind you, seen as throughout the entire film the protagonist only encounters three Nazi officials. No wonder the entire film comprises of trivial close-ups - zoom out any closer of the scenes inside "Auschwitz" and you'll see your lawnmower, power tools and inflatable paddling pool.

Finally, this film is incredibly misleading. By the end of the movie, you will question why you spent your time watching this film. You would have done so for a number of reasons. Perhaps you are interested in Second World War history, and were hence drawn to the film because of its 1) Rave reviews on the front cover and 2) Respectable score of 6.7 on IMDb. Those who are considering watching this film, do not be deceived. The reviews on the DVD are all by the same woman, probably related by some description to the director, which also explains the commendable IMDb score. The fact that there are under 20 reviews also means the score is far from representative. This film is intrinsically poor, irreconcilable with the genuine Holocaust experience, and verges unintentionally on a stand up comedy. It is the worst film I have ever had the pleasure of viewing.

One of the slowest, most boring films I've tried to watch
Vonpelt4 September 2019
I only managed to watch about fifteen minutes of this film. I turned it off, watched something else, then thought I'd give it another go, thinking maybe I just hadn't been in the right frame of mind for it the first time. Nope - still unwatchable and I could only stomach another five minutes, in which the film had gotten nowhere. It jumped about in different time lines, the actors sleepwalked through modern-style moral preaching sermons disguised as dialogue which probably wouldn't have happened during that time as prisoners would have been too scared to say anything negative to their captors.

As a previous reviewer mentioned, the music is annoying and kind of adds to the droning mind numbing-ness of the film. The female actors were so nondescript I couldn't tell them apart. The 'actor' who played Mengeles was DREADFUL. It was like watching a really bad amateur theater production you have to stick out because your kid is in it. Maybe it got better after twenty minutes - I don't know, but I HAVE managed to stick out a boring film until it got better before, but this one was just unwatchable - and I did try. What a shame because it is such an important topic, particularly in this day and age.

Dreadful acting, appalling musical score, pace so slow
brockwaydominic10 November 2019
I have to agree with earlier reviewer who said it is like a bad school play. Certainly actor who played Mengele cannot act.

j-townend9 November 2019
I haven't even watched this movie yet, but I'm about to do so. I just wanted to say that I've looked at the 4 reviews on here so far and cannot understand how 3 give this 1 out of 10 and really slate it,then the 4th gives 10 out of 10, you just can't go by these reviews,it's totally makes a mockery of it! Ridiculous!!

Very poor.
sihayes-0413917 February 2020
With such an emotional subject, there is a lack of feeling to this production. Cinematography lacks awareness, everywhere looks too clean and new. The character, Josef, is almost a comic with a laughable fake German accent. The music score is awful and reminded me of those cheap CDs usually entitled 'relaxation' Or Yoga Music. Lighting is dark, but this might have been an (unsuccessful) attempt to create atmosphere.

Could Have Been Better
stephenverner31 January 2022
Even though I was familiar with the historical account, I found the film hard to follow at times. I felt it could have been edited better.

Mengele gets away and we know this ahead of time, but our sense of justice drives our hope that in some universe he gets the hell he gave to so many others.

Don't waste your time with this
mrsmus19 March 2020
If you don't want bad acting, bad filming, bad story... Then move on - My husband and I have been watching many movies about WW II and concentration camps, but this one is definitely the worse movie I have watched for a long time... I will recommend you to spend your time cleaning your home instead of this movie...

Great movie about a true story
pypghkdfd25 September 2021
I've read the other reviews and I'm appalled. The actors depicted the human condition that had unspeakable horrors. The movie tells the story of faith and hope of life. There aren't answers to every question. Evil exist in the most vile of humanity. Why did this have to happen will be a question until the return of Jesus. Murder and famine have plagued the earth since time began. Even in the midst of evil hope is alive and this story was told and will be remembered because of her story and perseverance.

nothing good about this film
sawadeetom27 January 2021
The concept is fine, probably most of the writing but the movie is terrible. fire up with a woman with a modern tatoo giving birth, fake accents, terrible film quality and so many mistakes in the detail. if you last more than 5 minutes, you have fallen asleep.

honestly thought it was made by first year students. the Mengele character is a a sad joke.

Bear with it
LollyWhelan17 October 2021
It is based on a true story from the protagonist and Dr Mengele. Badly filmed with the sound and picture by amatuers but the story in hindsight is ok but in real time, the chopping and changing makes a bad cut.

If you bear with it, it shows compassion and love still existed in the most heinous of circumstances.

Trash from an 'artist'
It's clear from the 2 minute mark that this awful director cared only about trying to be artistic and not at all about the subject.

This is truly a disservice to the people who the film is supposed to portray.

Lasted 27 minutes
seanpatrickchandler5 November 2021
The acting is poor with the acceptation of the lady playing the "angel" the film jumps around alot making little sense one minute shes drinking a cup of tea the next minute shes in a line with smoke machines and barking dogs dunno how to describe the cinematic experience other than it looks like a student film but with high quality cameras but the direction is pretty strange.

Fails to take my mind out of the fact I'm watching a film.

Schindler's list Is a better film to watch.

Unrealistic

I'm no film critic or historian but I am a midwife. This seamed a totally unrealistic portrayal of the true horrors these people endured

Painful to watch.

Warning: Spoilers
Do not spend any time watching this movie. All mixed up slow and difficult to tell the characters apart. Kept watching as I am a lover of WW2 movies as well as historical fiction. A good if not great concept. Too bad it was not created and told with a different layout.

Must watch
mcnee-3329718 October 2019
Due to it being a true story and a massive part of our history, I thought I should watch this and I'm glad I did.

Quite a slow burner but really good film. Good acting and very real.

Ambitious treatment, let down by intrusive music
mail-8101923 June 2023
A complex ambitious production that makes me want to watch again and research the true story, as that is the key to getting the most out of the film. Noeleen Comiskey projects the innate beauty and inner strength of a truly good person with unshakeable faith, hope and charity. I found the jumbled timeline difficult to understand, but I am keen to get more out of this film with future repeat viewings : definitely a keeper! My one complaint is the sound : incidental music too intrusive, too loud, too monotonous ; also certain female voices (alas Noeleen's included) suffered from bass reverb and muffled high frequency. I was struggling...!

Nonetheless, an excellent film that I look forward to revisiting.
