Season One Review
southdavid9 January 2020
So.. Upfront about this. I haven't read any of the books in Phillip Pullman's series, nor have I seen the film version from a number of years back. Literally, my only knowledge about the show going into it, was that there was a polar bear in it. That said, I both enjoyed, and was baffled by, this first season.

A world that resembles ours (but is not ours) has limits to scientific research placed on it by a religious sect called the Magisterium. As a number of children disappear, Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen) begin a quest to search for her missing friend Roger (Lewin Lloyd). Her adventures take her North, where she discovers a number of horrible truths about her past, and the fate of the missing children. Meanwhile, on our Earth, a member of the Magisterium harasses the family of a missing explorer (for reasons, If I'm honest, I don't really understand (although I'm hoping will become apparent at a later date)).

I've surmised the plot without mentioning Ruth Wilson, who dominates the show as Mrs. Coulter essentially the villain of this first season. Terrifying and captivating in equal measure. She's not the only quality selection in the high profile cast though, James McAvoy, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Anne Marie Duff and Nina Sosanya amongst many others are present too. Away from the quality cast, it's a show that looks amazing. The money spent, for a BBC series, is really high and you can see it in the CGI effects, particularly the numerous animals that the story requires. It is truly a quality production all round.

But.. coming at this series cold, I was confused a lot of the time as to what was going on. I kept having to pause it to ask my wife (who has read the books) questions about what was happening. Some of this was plot related and I figured I just had to wait until it became apparent (and much of it was clearer by the end of the run), but a lot of it was technical questions that I think the show might have explained better (or perhaps just earlier). Can people see each other's daemons? Can they hear each other's daemons? Do they have to eat? Things like that. I know that they filmed two seasons at the same time, so the new one is on the way, and I'm assuming that will explain some of the larger mysteries to me; like why Andrew Scott is cast in this really minor role and what his family have to do with anything else.

So for a layman such as myself, I found it a technically impressive but occasionally baffling experience, however, I'm confident, given the show has the books as a template, we're getting towards the answers.

That's great , an epic episode . A marvelous performance , everything is on top

The cinematography is fantastic , you can pause at any scene and print this photo , CGI is great too

If it had swords and fights people would be talking about it , very underrated

Can't wait for season 2 !!

Fair episode.
cruise0125 December 2019
3.5 out of 5 stars.

The finale was a decent episode. Which had a little too much exposition. Slow pacing. And a build up that was anti climatic. The visuals are great. There are some shocking moments with Lord Eziel. James McAvoy is back. Great actor. Seeing his obsession in discovering dusts becomes questionable. There is a emotional sad moment in the climax. The ending does leave on a cliffhanger for another season. Which i can not wait for.

Overall, His Dark Materials season 1 i will rate 4 out of 5 stars. The direction and script has done well bringing this adaptation to the screen. Bringing a fantasy science fiction world with humans and daemons. The characters build up. The cast ensemble is good. It does have its fair share of action and thrills. Wonderful visual effects. The pacing can be a little slow moving. Still worth checking out.

By FAR the best episode of the season!
aarongnr23 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Even though the editors were stupid enough to put the line about a "great betrayal" in the recap at the start of the episodes and basically took all the surprise factor out of that twist, it was still awesome to see it unfold.

The visual effects in this are stunning. The vibe of the episode was finally consistent throughout the episode and built tension very well. That was the first episode that actually managed to do that for me.

Thank god they stuck the landing here. Let's hope for an even better and more consistent season two, I like where this is going VERY much!

Everything about this first series conclusion was perfect. Pacing. Cinematography. Acting. Never rushed. No false notes. The magic never wavered. Beautiful, moving and extraordinarily good.

I really want to like it...
gabriel-8024 December 2019
The thematics of the show are brillant, but the execution lacks soul. I think the season had a solid start, with interesting characters and a mysterious storyline, but then nothing came of it. Despite 8 episodes, the characters never get under your skin, except for Lyra, which makes the finale seem flat and soulless. The effects, cinematogrphy and overall production still blows my mind, but it is always down to how they tell the story, and unfortunately this is where the show fails. I will give season 2 a shot, but my feeling is the show will be cancelled after that, as there is no buzz surrounding the show, which I can only interpret as not that many is watching it. Too bad. The books are great.

S1 Review
r96sk8 October 2020
S1 of 'His Dark Materials' is enjoyable viewing. First and foremost, the special effects for this show are incredible. The animals and dæmons look insane, especially by television standards. That is the thing that I love most about this. The cinematography is also top notch.

Cast-wise it's good. It's easy to see that Dafne Keen (Lyra) has serious talent, she is impressive for the majority here - at a few moments her performance isn't perfect, e.g. when finding out something in episode two, but I wouldn't expect her to be, definitely the best actor on display and she'll only improve. You may think I'm forgetting or ignoring James McAvoy (Asriel). Of course he is 'the' star but he hardly features, he's just barely in three episodes. For when we do see him, he is - obviously - terrific.

Away from Keen and McAvoy, you also have Ruth Wilson (Marisa) and Anne-Marie Duff (Ma) involved - I've only recently become aware of those two, from 'Luther' and 'The Salisbury Poisonings' respectively, they are both good here. Elsewhere, James Cosmo (Farder), Lucian Msamati (John) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Lee) are enjoyable in their roles. Helen McCrory (Stelmaria) is in there too, but I didn't notice her until typing this review to be honest.

I did find some of the pacing across the first four episodes rather off, there was a fair amount of times when I felt like it was dragging its heels. Thankfully, the second part of this eight-episode series is much better. The opening theme is superb, also. I look forward to catching season two.

At least a good finale
felix-bergman24 December 2019
By far the best episode of the series, saying something about the series rather than this particular episode. I actually feel giving it 7 stars is generous, but the adaptation critic in me thought that the mostly good adaptation of this episode made up for some of its other flaws. That leaves this series with: 1 pretty good episode (this one) 2 episodes I though was kinda good when I was still hoping that this series was gonna be good, might not rate them as highly if I would rewatch Them with all the facts of future episodes in mind (ep 2 and 3) 1 episode that was a disappointment for me, but decent enough to keep me watching (ep 1) 2 episodes that were pretty bad, mostly cause of bad acting, rushed scenes, choppy editing and poor setups making what happened in them not as impactful as they could have been (ep 6 and 7) 2 god awful episodes that I which would burn in a nuclear explosion until all remnants of it were wiped from the face of the earth (ep 4 and 5).

The ending still convinced me to give a possible second season a go. I am worried, cause The Subtle Knife is my favorite book in the series, but I recently re-read it, and I realized that it's not too dependent on the first book. Most of the screw ups from this season can be ignored or easily re-written if they just want to, I just hope they bring on another writer than Jack Throne.

On the other hand the series as a whole convinced me to cancel my pre-order for the steelbook of this show, and like I said in my review for episode 5, I would not pay to keep watching this series, if my TV provider stops providing HBO Nordic, I'm not that eager to watch a second season.

EDIT: I saw another rewiev bring up a very valid point about this series. During the whole series I have been somewhere between mildly annoyed and furious about them showing Boreal crossing between the worlds, not completely inacurate, at least not at some points, but ruining this reveal in what is book 2. But, having read the books 10+ times, I've always reviewed already knowing that the traveling between worlds was a thing. But if you are reading the first book for the first time with no prior knowledge, this is very much the surprise ending. We know Asriel is studying the other worlds, but we don't even know if it is possible to travel between them, because we are not intorduced to the windows until book 2. So, while I originally held the stance that "It's bad for the pacing/editing, and I don't really like it, but sure it isn't hurting anyone", I've now come to realize that, yes, this decision is hurting EVERYONE who is experiencing this seires as thier very first encounter with this material, though those poor people aren't done any favors by the rest of the series either.

Dull

Not sure about the rave reviews. It was dull and lifeless when it should have been magical and colourful at times. I still think the film was better.

A cinematic masterpiece of literary adaptation
paulmcgrath-1769324 December 2019
As someone who is again reading the books in tandem to the show, the producers, writers, and actors have pulled off a beautifully executed adaptation of The Golden Compass. From the choice of where to focus the CGI, to the amazing actors all brilliantly cast and acted, this show exudes the right tone and themes of Pullman's groundbreaking masterpiece.

Amazing production, cast, cgi, and story!
hscrowofficial24 December 2019
All i want to say is thank you for making this into a great show. After the films, I had lost hope until hbo took this on. The people who do not get this story, or see how grand it is are just whining just to whine. Watch it, it's worth it.

Finale was not like I expected, the major problem was with a clear hint for the next season but I enjoyed the fictional work done in this episode specially the soldier's jumping scene.

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 8: A well-done episode and season finale , on its own childish terms, with very good acting, especially by Dafne Keen, childish suspense, ice-flower thrill, few good visual effects, mystery of course and a heart to heart ending eerie connection.

4 Stars
boudybob23 December 2019
My rating is 4 stars and 6/10 AT BEST but i gave it 1 just to compensate for the mad reviews.

I didn't really care for anything happened and that's on the creators.

The pace was just right at the beginning of the show but then every thing went south. They increased the pacing, rushed the events, gave unimportant moments moooore screen time and vise versa, created unmemorable moments and characters, didn't explain anything and apparently in low budget because the fight scenes were like 2 seconds and you just assume that we go on and imagine the fights in our heads.

I'm not really excited for season two and i don't know if i will watch it or not. I'm very disappointed of great shows which keep descending into the bottom.
