Of all of the young actors to break through thanks to the success of "Stranger Things," Sadie Sink has had arguably one of the most interesting career trajectories. Sink got her start on Broadway playing the titular role of "Annie," and had a handful of TV appearances on shows like "The Americans" and "Blue Bloods" before nabbing a main role in "American Odyssey." Unfortunately, that show only lasted one season, canceled by NBC only two days after the season finale. When Sink was cast as Max Mayfield on "Stranger Things" in season 2, she immediately became a fan favorite. Max has become the bleeding heart of the series, and her popularity even prevented show creators, The Duffer Brothers, from killing off the character in season 4 as originally planned.
Following "Stranger Things," Sink has continued to thrive by starring in "Fear Street: 1978," Taylor Swift's short film, "All Too Well," Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale,...

Evil Dead Rise actress Nell Fisher and Bad Sisters actor Michael Smiley are set to join Elijah Wood in Bookworm, a new family adventure comedy from New Zealand director Ant Timpson (Come to Daddy).
Fisher will play Mildred, a 12-year-old girl whose life is turned upside down when her estranged, washed-up American magician father, Strawn Wise (Wood), comes to look after her. Hoping to bond with the tween, Strawn takes Mildred on an ill-advised camping trip into the rugged New Zealand wilderness in a quest to find the mythological beast known as the Canterbury Panther, named after the region on New Zealand’s South Island.
The project will reteam Wood with Come to Daddy director Timpson and will see the Lord of the Rings actor return to New Zealand to shoot.

The first season of "Yellowjackets" left a major impact, telling the haunting story of a girls' soccer team that became stranded in the Ontario woods after a plane crash. The girls soon form cannibalistic clans, and the rest of the show follows both the stranded young women and their adult counterparts. One of the series' most complex and eerie survivors is the scheming, intelligent outcast Misty Quigley (played by Samantha Hanratty and Christina Ricci). As a young woman, Misty destroyed the plane's black box, a decision that proved pivotal to why the team stayed stranded (and the fateful events that followed). She was also responsible for a number of other choices that send the characters spiraling into chaotic directions, from stockpiling magic mushrooms to kidnappings and more.
While Misty has often been a step ahead of the other "Yellowjackets" characters from time to time, a new casting development suggests that...

More intriguing casting news for season 2 of Yellowjackets: Showtime announced today that Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) is joining the Emmy-nominated drama.
Wood will play Walter, a dedicated citizen detective who will challenge Misty (Christina Ricci) in ways she won’t see coming. That’s all the pay network is saying about his role for now.
Wood starred as hobbit Frodo Baggins in the trilogy The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and Return of the King, based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of The Rings. He will next be seen starring in the upcoming films L.A. Rush and The Toxic Avenger, a superhero comedy horror film.
Most recently he appeared in No Man of God, which he also produced, that debuted at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. Previously, he starred in Come to Daddy, along with the comedy series Wilfred and Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.

Elijah Wood is joining “Yellowjackets” Season 2 in a season-long guest art, Showtime announced on Friday.
The “Lord of the Rings” star will play Walter, a dedicated citizen detective who “will challenge Misty (Christina Ricci) in ways she won’t see coming,” per a description from the network.
The series co-creators and co-showrunners, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, recently confirmed to TheWrap that — in the contemporary storyline— Misty’s true crime skills will be put to use trying to find Natalie (Juliette Lewis), who was abducted by persons unknown in the Season 1 finale.

At the time the first entry in director Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "The Fellowship of the Ring," hit theaters in December 2001, a then-20-year-old Elijah Wood had already been acting in movies for more than a decade. How would the actor elect to follow up his role in the fantasy blockbuster films as the wide-eyed ring-bearer Frodo Baggins? By playing a sleazy nerd in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," portraying a silent, cannibalistic serial killer in "Sin City," and voicing a tap-dancing penguin in "Happy Feet" (among other things).
Wood's eclectic post-"Lord of the Rings" filmography was a conscious choice on his part. In an interview with Esquire to mark the 20-year anniversary of "Fellowship" in 2021, Wood recalled just how much Jackson's fantasy-adventure trilogy came to consume his life during the years they spent making it. "My life was so defined by being in New Zealand,...

Ahead of the SXSW debut of their latest film, “Slash/Back,” three of the thriller’s producers —- Scythia Films’ Dan Bekerman and Stellar Citizens’ Chris Yurkovich and Alex Ordanis —- announced the launch of the new full-service production company, Good Question Media.
Bekerman, Yurkovich and Ordanis will serve as partners and producers in the new venture, which will oversee film and television projects, supporting them from inception through distribution and packaging with the Good Question Media development fund.
As one of the very few Canada-based private equity funds, the company is uniquely positioned to access the international treaty funding systems. But that’s just one way the veteran producers aim to use their combined expertise.
“We’ve always been united in the belief that a fundamental strength of storytelling is its ability to challenge how an audience thinks or sees the world,” Bekerman, Yurkovich and Ordanis told Variety in a joint statement.

Folks, I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but Elijah Wood is making some of the best work he’s made in years, whether it’s behind the camera or in front. Long past his days in the ‘Rings’ franchise, Wood has acted in underrated (and admittedly strange) features recently like “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore” and last year’s “Come to Daddy.” And as a producer, he’s worked on features such as “Mandy,” “Color Out of Space,” “The Greasy Strangler,” and “Daniel Isn’t Real.” All that to say, don’t sleep on Mr.

A contemporary reimagining of Troma Entertainment’s successful 1984 low-budget action comedy hit, The Toxic Avenger is steeped in environmental themes and subverts the superhero genre in the vein of Deadpool. When a struggling everyman is pushed into a vat of toxic waste, he is transformed into a mutant freak who must go from shunned outcast to underdog hero as he races to save his son, his friends and his community from the forces of corruption and greed. Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz will serve as producers.

Looking for the UK Amazon Prime new releases? Click here instead!
It’s been awhile since the world has seen a new comedy from Greg Daniels, co-creator of The Office (U.S.) and Parks and Recreation. That all changes this month with Amazon Prime’s new releases for May 2020. That’s right, leading the pack of Amazon originals on May 1 is Daniels’ Upload, a comedy about digital afterlives. That should inject a healthy dose of sci-fi “middletopia” into our lives.

Now, hundreds of miles from his cushy comfort zone, Norval must battle with demons both real and perceived in order to reconnect with a father he barely knows.

Stars: Elijah Wood, Stephen McHattie, Madeleine Sami, Martin Donovan, Michael Smiley | Written by Toby Harvard | Directed by Ant Timpson
Directed by Ant Timpson in his feature directorial debut, based on his idea and written by Toby Harvard (The Greasy Strangler), Come to Daddy is a New Zealand film project. It stars Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings), someone not unfamiliar with New Zealand film work, as Norval Greenwood, a thirty-something musical artist who travels to a cabin in the middle-of-nowhere and attempts to reconnect with his father.
Stephen McHattie plays Gordon, a wonderfully manic and unpredictable man, played with a real tension that creates discomfort and awkwardness in the scenes between himself and Norval in the early stages of the movie. Norval begins as a cocksure and almost arrogant character with a past shadowed with demons of alcoholism and self-harm, but as the film progresses and the relationship between father and son grows and adapts,...

Saban Films has acquired North American rights to Bruce Willis-starring sci-fi-action project “Cosmic Sin.” One of the hottest projects being pitched at the Berlin Film Festival’s European Film Market, the picture is written and directed by Corey Large and Edward Drake (“Breach”) with Large also producing.
“Cosmic Sin” follows a group of warriors and scientists who must fight to protect and save their race when a hostile alien species with the power to infect and take over human hosts sets its sights on a futuristic human society.
“Saban Films has been partnering on films at earlier stages and this is a project we knew we wanted to be involved with from the beginning,” said Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley, who negotiated the deal, with Large on behalf of the filmmakers.
The film is currently in pre-production, with The Exchange handling international rights in other territories. Stephen Eads is executive producing.

Father of Mine: Timpson Paints Pastiche with Peculiar Debut
While he assembles all the requisite elements for what promises to be a throwback to the glory days of cerebral B-movie genre classics with his debut Come to Daddy, producer Ant Timpson’s first foray behind the camera unfortunately attempts to disguise a lethargic, superficial narrative behind the continuously popular “batshit crazy” artifice wherein jarring elements and obtuse segues are often mistaken for deeper meaning.
Based on an idea by Timpson and scripted by Toby Harvard, a game Elijah Wood stars as a pathetic thirtysomething with daddy issues who jumps on an opportunity to reunite with his estranged parent only to discover he’s inadvertently become part of something sinister.…...

Come to Daddy star Elijah Wood and director Ant Timpson discuss the dark roots of their cleverly constructed thriller.
In Come to Daddy, Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings) plays Norval Greenwood, a seemingly well-off young man and La music scenester who goes to visit the dad he hasn’t seen in 30 years. The opportunity, such as it is, arrives after the old man sends him a warm letter asking for a chance at reconciliation. But when Norval arrives at his dad’s remote coastal cabin, he discovers that his father is quite a different prospect in person, and that the elder Greenwood’s past might put both of them in danger.
Come to Daddy is the directorial debut of New Zealand filmmaker Ant Timpson, who spent a number of years producing independent horror fare like The ABCs of Death and The Greasy Strangler before finally getting behind the camera himself.

As Neon rides the awards-season wave with Bong Joon Ho’s cinematic masterpiece Parasite, it isn’t stopping with delivering genre titles that speak to the brand. This weekend, its will debut its chilling thriller The Lodge directed by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz.
Written by Fiala, Franz and Sergio Casci, The Lodge follows a family that decides to spend the holidays in a snowy remote cabin. Already, this doesn’t sound like a good idea. The father (Richard Armitage) is forced to leave the family vaycay for work and his new girlfriend Grace (Riley Keough) stays behind to take care of his kids, Aidan (Jaeden Martell) and Mia (Lia McHugh). When a blizzard hits, they become trapped and, well, Grace’s dark past begins to terrify all of them.
The Lodge debuted last year at Sundance before going through the festival circuit and then making its premiere in Italy in January.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (Marielle Heller)
It sounds almost too perfect: Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers, the beloved children’s entertainer. Of course, who else could it be, really? It is so seemingly predestined, in fact, that Hanks’s first onscreen appearance as Fred Rogers elicits knowing laughter from the audience. Yes, Tom Hanks playing Mr. Rogers looks and sounds exactly how you would imagine. Marielle Heller’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, however, is much more than an obvious biopic. It’s not really a biopic at all. Nor is it a rehash of 2018’s much-heralded documentary profile of Fred Rogers, Won’t You Be MyNeighbor?...

No one has ever mistaken Elijah Wood for a tough beefcake. Standing just 5’6’’ and probably weighing little more than a wet blanket, the veteran performer has made quite the career out of playing fragile, shy, broken, or insecure young men, then turning those expectations upside down to dizzying effect. Even at 39 years of age he still looks the part of an awkward teenager trying to carve out a safe space in an unwelcome world.
Believe it or not, Wood has now entered his fifth decade of working as a professional actor. Throughout that time he’s evolved from wide-eyed child star to wide-eyed savior (Lord of the Rings trilogy) to wide-eyed psychopath (Maniac) with many variations of the like in between.
Ant Timpson’s Come to Daddy seems to understand these chameleon-like tendencies exist but doesn’t always know what to do with them. In the opening sequence of this nasty thriller,...

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.
The January doldrums have finished and Oscar season’s close has arrived. So say goodbye to the critical darlings and dump month horrors because cinemas nationwide are ready to deliver super-antiheroes (more on them below), familiar claymation friends (A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon opens February 14), and videogame panache (the reworked Sonic the Hedgehog opens February 14 too).
That doesn’t, however, mean there won’t be some indie and foreign holdovers to satiate the appetites of cinephiles fighting against the studio takeover tooth and nail. There’s plenty...

A potential bonding opportunity between estranged father (Stephen McHattie) and son (Elijah Wood) takes a demented turn when some surprise visitors show up in Come to Daddy. In her four-star review, Heather Wixson wrote that Come to Daddy is "...a quirky and unpredictable feature film directorial debut from Ant Timpson," and ahead of the movie's release via Saban Films, a new clip has been released, featuring a selfie gone horribly wrong.
You can watch the new clip below, and keep an eye out for Come to Daddy when Saban Films releases it in select theaters and on VOD and Digital beginning February 7th, 2020.
Directed by Ant Timpson from a screenplay by Toby Harvard (based on an idea by Ant Timpson), Come to Daddy stars Elijah Wood, Stephen McHattie, Martin Donovan, Michael Smiley, Madeleine Sami, and Simon Chin. In case you missed it, visit our online hub to catch up on...

The creative forces behind Come to Daddy clearly take delight in shocking their audience. The film, a mix of comedy, horror, and thriller, seeks to upend expectations at all turns. Sometimes they succeed, while at other times, they fall a little bit short. The end result is a unique little movie, one that aims high with its genre ambitions. If it doesn’t quite reach the intended heights, there’s still a devilish streak of wit throughout that makes it more than just a garden variety independent flick. Having been on the festival circuit for nearly a year (beginning last April at the Tribeca Film Festival), it’s finally hitting screens this weekend and is worth a look. The movie is a mix, as mentioned above, of comedy, horror, and thriller. For Norval Greenwood (Elijah Wood), life has been one full of privilege, but ultimately one lacking in happiness. Deep...
