- TriviaThe episode title is "Eightfold Fence". In China and Japan there is a heavy contingent which practices Buddhism. One of the tenets of said faith is The Eightfold Path, or astangika-marga in Sanskrit, a set of principles and practices that Buddhists believe can end suffering. The eight steps are: Right understanding Right thought Right speech Right action Right livelihood Right effort Right mindfulness Right concentrationAlso, the number 8, is considered a lucky number in both China and Japan due to past trading and cultural exchange between the two countries. The number 8 is associated with happiness, wealth, prosperity, and status. In ancient Japanese writings the number eight was used to represent "many" or "from all directions". So an eightfold fence is no ordinary protection, a manyfold fence protects from every direction. The perfect place to hide.

- Quotes
Toda Mariko: Do you know "The Eightfold Fence"? From the time we are small, it is something we are taught to build within ourselves. An... impenetrable wall, behind which we can retreat whenever we need. You must train yourself to listen without hearing. For instance, you can listen to the sound of a blossom falling or the rocks growing. If you really listen, your present circumstance vanishes. Do not be fooled by our politeness. Our bows, our maze of rituals. Beneath it all... we could be a great distance away. Safe. And alone.
- Crazy creditsThe opening credit sequence is a modified version of a zen garden. This style of garden is often referred to as karesansui, which means "not using water."The two main elements of a Zen or karesansui (pronounced "kah-ray-sahn-soo-ee") garden are rocks to represent mountains (or islands) and sand to represent water. The sand used in Zen gardens is not beach sand; it is actually crushed or decomposed granite, small pebbles, or fine gravel. The particles of crushed granite are angular rather than round, so they can be more easily raked into patterns. Moreover, ripples in the sand or gravel represent flowing water or ripples in the ocean.
