Surprising Good
gschroe130 September 2019
First of all, let me say that I'm a little biased. I am the stunt double for Darren Pettie, who plays psychopath Orson. I don't usually watch too many of the shows I work on, but this piece was so intriguing from the start, blending just enough of the occult/supernatural with contemporary crime. Very well acted and written, and I'll be looking forward to the next episode...even though I won't be in it😉.

Such an impressive opening episode.
Sleepin_Dragon11 January 2021
I somehow managed to ignore this series when it first came around, one night unable to sleep, this first episode was on, all I can say, is that I was absolutely blown away by it.

I really enjoyed the premise of it, if you're a fan of The X Files, you would probably enjoy the vine and tone of this one, but a more obscure, British show called Apparitions feels closer to it.

This was creepy, sinister, exciting, I loved the cleverness of it, and the tone in particular. The nightmare scenes looked so good.

Credit to the lead actress, I'm hooked.

Great start, 9/10.

Well done. Creepy and engaging.

I didn't expect much. Network shows have gone seriously downhill, but this was great. Perfect balance of a police procedural with creepy supernatural elements. Great show so far.

Off to a very good start!
Joseph-Molion28 September 2019
No spoilers, but the 1st episode is really pretty tight, and very cool. Actors are very strong, and the story has legs. I gave it an 8 of 10 because every show can grow better, and I'll likely wind up with 10/10 in subsequent reviews.

Gonna love this show, I can already tell!

Possession Looks A Lot Like Insanity, And Insanity Looks A Lot Like Possession.
wandernn1-81-6832743 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
We start off here with an interview with a murderer. 587 True or False questions to determine whether or not the guy is a liar or not. And she, Mrs. Bouchard goes to court to prove this guy is sane, but upon further review, she gets attacked by the suspect while saying the Lords Prayer. Nice.

And then David Acosta, comes to Kristen's home He explains that he works for the Catholic Church. Acosta offers her a job . Since she recently lost her paying job as an expert witness, she is reluctant, but she needs work!!!

+1 Star for this opening.....

Starting case. Orson? Haha . Kristen does her research. And while she's googling info at her home on Acosta, she hears a noise. And then she sees a figure while she's in bed. Asleep? Or Awake? Ooo thats a nice looking DEMON there , Kristen!!!! Ahh Mom is screaming!! The kids come running in!! LOL, fresh urine in the corner!!! Could a dream do that?? Oh it's water, nevermind.

She goes and sees a psychiatrist. She gets some meds.

Oh I like Aasif Mandvi's character. He's another doubter.

Ruh roh, after another day of cases, Kristen is back at home asleep. Here is George the Demon again. Oh nice. I like the setup she did with the sign on the ceiling.

+1 STar for that

Okay so Larue is the murder suspect they are investigating in jail Kristen suspects that someone got hold of her psychiatrists case files on her, and is using that information to scare the bejesus out of her.

Haha, Michael Emerson as Dr. Townsend. I like it. Townsend is obviously going to be a player for the bad guys in this.

+1 Star for Dr. Townsend setting up Kirsten with Larue.

Kirsten comes up with evidence on Larue that prove he's been in league with Dr. Townsend to come up with an insanity defense. She turns it over to the prosecutor who fired her. Case over.

Pretty good first ep. 8/10

My father was a self proclaimed Exorcist.
javabeansam26 November 2019
I am hesitant to watch this show. As a child, I saw the 'EXORCIST' and mostly stay away from demonic possession films. Also, my dad proclaimed he was an Exorcist in Egypt. My dad would sometimes point out someone was possessed while I took him out running errands. I just took it as he was crazy. People are just crazy. I do like the idea that possession sometimes seems like mental illness. And, mental Illness sometimes seems like possession. We shall see! So far a good plot and storyline!

This for the first episode.
intrepidami9 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I am only commenting about that. It was very good. We were properly introduced to the backgrounds of the main characters. The woman has led a very busy life! She was a big time mountain climber. She was back loaded with plenty of debt. Her husband, another climber is off traipsing around the globe, leaving her to raise 4 young girls. She is a lapsed Catholic. She actually revealed to her psychologist that she wishes her daughters were gone. This quite a reveal for a first episode. She has a mother who seems to be dressing way out of her age category. The main is smart, does her research. Everything in the first episode had a plausible "earthly" explanation. The lead has one flaw to me. Her intensive background and thought processes seem quite unbelievable for someone as young as she seems. I'm thinking what is she doing as a mother of four girls, with a deadbeat living his dreams husband and where did she find time to amass her education? She doesn't seem stupid enough to have gotten herself into this mess. I think they could have reduced the number of children she has.

We're introduced to the male main. He was a world traveler. In his travels he witnessed something that altered the course of his life. He has a main adversary. He and this adversary have a history that seems to very defined. He thoroughly believes.

All of this seems to mirror The X-files with slight alterations. There are 3 members of the investigative team. Two are disbelievers, one is not. The third character really knows his stuff. He figures out plausible explanations/ answers to mysterious things well. I feel very quickly they'll have to show stuff that defies explanation or people will start referring to this show as "debunking evil". This guy also seems to have a wealth of technical knowledge to have ended up as a church handyman. I found myself wondering if they should ask him question number 1!

The groundwork for several running plot lines were set up during this episode. Her husband going around leaving her to raise a family by herself physically and fincially. This Machiavellian adversary. Everybodies personal quirks and faults. All and all it was a very good, well thought out intro. The problem with a lot of shows is they start out very well, and then kind of fizzle out.

Good start

A good start to the series, good character development and storyline introduction. The acting was decent and I feel compelled to watch more. Though the George demon was borderline comical.

Great series for people who believe in the afterlife
patmobile20 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Great characters that viewers can easily relate to.

The scene where George gets on. Katja's bed had some flaws ;

1) She had taped a sign on the ceiling that would be blurry if she was dreaming. In the scene , it was blurry, but she WAS'NT dreaming.

2) She saw George cut off her finger, but how could he fake that?

Other inconsistencies include;

1) How did Townsend break into the psychiatrist's file cabinet?

2) why did the receptionist leave Townsend alone in the filing room?

3) Why did the prison guards allow Katharine to riffle through the visitor logs?

4) Why would the Catholic Church spend money on a project like this and have a seminary student run it along with the church handyman?

5) How does a father run off to climb mountains when ha has four adorable daughters growing up without him?

I'm sure you will notice other anomalies, but if you can suspend belief, it is a really entertaining pilot . With four seasons, I'm hoping all the episodes are as good.

It caught my interest, but...
LegendaryFang5627 July 2021
Interesting premiere. It has definitely caught my interest, that's for sure. But I'm a little disappointed that there wasn't anything supernatural involved, at least not yet. It was just conjecture. This show would end up being a whole lot more enjoyable if something seemingly supernatural, is. But I have a feeling that won't be the case. I hope that I'm wrong.

Genesis 1
Prismark1015 October 2020
The first episode of Evil really displays its bizarre concept. The Exorcist meets The X Files meets The Silence of the Lambs.

Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) is a forensic psychologist who has to determine whether Orson LeRoux, a serial killer who claims he is possessed by a demon and therefore insane.

Things get complicated as she has dreams of a demon who comes to her bed at night. The serial killer seems to be aware of these dreams she has had.

Kristen is a sceptic about the supernatural. However she has been hired by David Acosta (Mike Colter.) He is a former journalist now training to be a priest. He is a believer in the supernatural, his assistant Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi) is the technical wizard who is another sceptic and looks for scientific explanations.

It was an uneven and uncertain first episode with the starting titles kicking in about a quarter a way through the episode.

Undeniably the scenes with George the demon are scary and intriguing. There is also the character of Leland Townsend, the forensic psychiatrist hired by the prosecutor who has his own twisted agenda.

It might take a few more episodes before the series finds it feet. Some of it was derivative, the kind of thing you would found in serials such as Prodigal Son, Lincoln Rhyme, Hannibal. Then there is stuff straight out of Supernatural.

I'm only on episode 1 but I already found an error.
rieaz14 June 2022
I like it so far - but in season 1 episode 1 Genesis 1 in some of the scenes the lamp beside the bedroom door is gone. It bugs me. Lol. I kind of like the creepy guy. He has a decent personality even for being a really creepy guy.

A good Pilot
laguerrecarlens31 July 2022
This is a fresh start for the new series of Robert and Michelle King. The couple who brought us The good wife and the good fight. We got Katja Herbers (Westworld) who nailed her performance at lead actress. Mike Colter (Luke Cage, Defenders, The Good wife) is good also there and we got Leland Townsend who's good at being a villain.

Im liking it so far.
garabedian12312 October 2020
Miracle or not a miracle. reminds me of that cancelled show called miracles almost (god is nowhere) show.. And supernatural like. I mean its clearly obvious that either 4 girls are not real...how could a single mother take care of 4 girls and work a full time job. And where is the husband? dead? or never existed... good acting and good special effects.

Screaming shouting children
bluebirdstreet7 May 2021
4 of them all at once screaming, talking very loud was enough to stop me from getting past episode 6. It tipped me over the edge It started off ok but stole to much from The Exorcist and just got so silly by the 6th episode. The rock star wanna be grandma was not only the worst babysitter ever she was cringeworthy.

It's like the writers tried to cram every devil movie cliche into every episode.

Give it a go but I'd be surprised if you make it past the 6th episode.

Actually make that the 4th as i muted the shouting, screaming children many times early on.

In fact, just don't watch it. It's terrible.

Too much too quick.
joshkeithis19 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Pacing in this episode is WAY too quick. 10 minutes in the lead character has already interviewed the killer, said he couldn't be trusted, re-examined him, said she wasn't Catholic "anymore", read a religious passage (IMMEDIATELY after saying she wasn't Catholic) to see if the killer would react aggressively, said she needed more time to think, was threatened by her (for lack of a better word) "boss", stood up to him in front of the judge just 15 seconds later; we found out that her husband is a Mountain Guide and that her mother is against him and she is being threatened to pay back her loan or she'll be kicked out of the house.

That is WAY TOO MUCH to digest in 10 minutes. Let these things BREATHE. We are not seeing character development, we are seeing a character that is ALREADY developed. She should've had some time (due to the absurdity of the claim) between being asked if the killer was possessed and actually checking. There should've been time between her job being threatened by her "boss" and standing up to him.

The pacing of the first episode is ridiculously quick.
