something new and different
sheva0306 January 2020
Totally new story, take and POV on Dracula and his history and lore. Really don't get the critics, and why they dont like it. it would actually be really boring if would got to see the same story, over again. I recommend it... it's not a jawdroper, but it's pretty sweet to watch... something new and different

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is by far my favorite episode of the three, we have the cat/mouse relationship between the count and Van Helsing taking shape as a conflict or a race between two great minds, which I loved, and we have a colorful cast of back characters each has something to give to the story.

The Mysterious Passenger in Cabin 9
claudio_carvalho14 January 2020
Dracula plays chess with Sister Agatha and has a conversation about his travel to England on board of the Russian vessel Demeter with the crew, six other passengers and a mysterious sick passenger in cabin 9. Along the journey, Dracula drinks the blood and acquires the knowledge of the crew and passenger when finally the identity of the unknown passenger in cabin 9 is disclosed.

"Blood Vessel" is a good episode of "Dracula", better than the first one. There is mystery, suspense and dark humor in a great screenplay that entertains the viewer. The conclusion with Dracula in the present days is highly intriguing. My vote is seven.

Blood Voyage.
Sleepin_Dragon2 January 2020
One person you wouldn't want aboard ship, when making the journey to England is Count Dracula, but he's there, on fine form, and thirsty. I wasn't sure if they were going to be able to retain the elaborate quality of the first episode, but they did, and some. It was a dazzling ninety minutes, you can sense the presence of Gatiss and Moffat, it has the excitement, energy and fizz that you'd expect from the pair.

Claes Bang continues to stun as Dracula, I am finding his performance absolutely incredible, he's charismatic, charming and funny, some of the lines in this episode were terrific. His accent is rather incredible, you'd never know he was Danish.

Absolutely love it, and can't wait for the finale. 9/10

ok..this is a fun series
lastReq3 January 2020
Wasn't sure about what they were doing with drac but its just a fun take on the story, yes there are dramatic ans serious tones and yes its a costume drama but as you see in the end of this episode what it really is at its core is a fun Dracula fan take on an old story... I've bought into it hook line and sinker because despite some cringe moments, dubious choices and general WTF moments I'm really enjoying it on a pure popcorny movie type of way

Blood Vessel

What was Inside Room No 9? Certainly not a portrait of Tom Baker. That was in the dining cabin.

This was a boat under siege episode. The crew and passengers are being bumped off one by one as Dracula satisfies his appetite. The surprise was that the passengers were not on the boat by accident.

Like the chess match they were playing. This was a battle between Dracula and Sister Van Helsing. I still think at 90 minutes the episode is still too long.

As someone who always wished that Steven Moffat wrote at least one Christmas special of Doctor Who with a straightforward narrative. I was not surprised by the ending.

What if Dracula in an Agatha Christie novel?
Criticalstaff23 October 2021
This episode is the highlight of the series. It is completely original, it is clever and it is well executed. The first episode was a classical horror story with a twist, the third is more Black-mirror-ish. This one is its own unique thing, it is part murder mystery part adventure story.

The reason I liked this episode is because in the original novel Dracula there is a part explaining how Dracula came from Transylvania to London. It is short, it is creepy but there is no plot development nor character growth, it is purely to get the character from A to B and to build up the lore, explain how he got Romanian soil in England. Be it the books or the movies, everyone always discarded this chapter, it is short, it is technical, there is nothing of importance happening.

This episode is a prime example of why TV is in a golden age right now. It is so good because this format allows precisely for these kinds of episodes. Modern TV has the luxury of focusing on a speck of dust on a characters shoulder and pull out and episode, even an entire arc around it. It can either crush your show or elevate it to high art. When it is successful, it stops the main action; yet it allows us, the audience, to get to know characters a bit better. You get the characters in vacation so to speak, outside of their natural surroundings. You get to see qualities and traits that you wouldn't have had time to see in the regular narrative.

Obviously, the main character is Dracula and we know everything there is to know already. In that regard the episode is kind off making fun of the tropes. Yet, if you consider that Sister Agatha is the main hero, this episode is helpful in fleshing her out as a unique and original character.

The episode's premise is simple yet perfectly executed; it stretches out that boring Dracula boat chapter into a detective murder mystery of sorts. It is Dracula meets Death on the Nile. It is the Count Vampire in an Agatha Christie story. It is at the same time ridiculous yet genius. Firstly, because it plays it straight and explores the adventures of the Count on an actual sea voyage. Secondly, because the episode wears it's self-awareness on its sleeve. You end up with a crime-mystery plot, filled with gothic-horror characters with just enough humour to blend it together seamlessly. It is funny, is it scary, it is intriguing, but most of all it is fresh and original.

In terms of a part of a larger series, the effect of the episode is harder to jauge. It is so disconnected from the main narrative that the next episode is struggling to be as interesting, while introducing new characters and motives. Similarly, because the first episode was more of a classical horror story this episode feels jarring at first. Fortunately, the tone is consistent, and Dracula and Sister Agatha have enough charisma to carry whatever the plot throws at them. Which in turn, shows how well these characters are written.

Masterful storytelling
DVD_Connoisseur2 January 2020
With the almost claustrophobic setting of a creaking Russian ship, the cheekily titled "Blood Vessel" harks back to the classic BBC horror stories of days gone by.

Strong on intelligent dialogue and rich characterisation from an excellent cast, this episode is gripping, suspenseful and, like the first episode, inventive and unpredictable.

Claes Bang is a mesmerising Count. He's absolutely believable as the smooth talking vampire, bringing fresh life to a familiar character.

10 out of 10. Unmissable.

It Will Float Your Boat
Hitchcoc5 January 2020
As Dracula makes his way to England, he has set things up on the Demeter, so he will have his earthen boxes and enough people to eat. But on board is our Sister and she is in his way. The claustrophobic nature of a packet like this makes him very visible. There is a good deal of tongue in cheek for such a violent piece. Unfortunately, going into episode three, I've just figured that the third episode will not end this but push into another entire season sometime in the future. Am I right?

Not that good
faithless473413 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
One of the things about this show that I do like is that they ask the question why. Why does he need to sleep in the soil of his home? Why can he not enter house uninvited and so on. Another reviewer pointed out that this episode adds nothing to the story and it doesn't. To many leaps and convenient escapes or ways around real explanations of what took place or how something was done. To contrived. I said in my review of the first episode that I would watch them all but after this episode that is likely not going to happen.

Still great and chomping away!
honeybloggs-696483 January 2020
We see Dracula as an elegant, intelligent , sophisticated , sexy man , who quickly transforms into an evil, dangerous and ruthless creature .

The fog around the ship was shown to be done by Dracula and the explanation was very well thought out.

This series continues to excite and captivate .

It is surprisingly refreshing that each episode lasts 90 minutes . It gives time for the development of the characters and plot lines . A mere sixty minutes would have left the audience feel cheated as everything would have been underdeveloped and rushed.

The ending for this episode was pure genius !

I can't wait for the final episode . I hope it's not a let down as many final episodes of mini series and dramas are! Fingers Crossed!

The Mystery continues
gk3030073 January 2020
Dracula is on a ship to England and he needs to reach their with his thirst for blood quenched, every time. Story, as our creators totem, start with different running threads which all start making sense as the reel roll. I was getting bored but soon regained my curiosity as it past half time. Count Dracula, like first episode, amuses us with his funny expressions and devilish intentions, Agatha is weak by muscle but strong by heart and the other characters are just fine.

However said all that, I still felt that rage in blood missing which I experienced while watching the first episode. That had more good elements of horror, as per me. May be the story required a whole episode spent on a ship. Maybe. Will know when i watch the finale which will decide the fate of this series. But, this time I have faith in Creators :)

Great Second Episode
kathi-2223610 January 2020
I don't understand those who loved the first episode (I did, too) and who didn't like this one. This was amazing. As a long time Dracula fan (since the late 1950s and Bela Lugosi, and I still have a copy of the novel I re-read from time to time), I'm loving this take on the story. I love the campy dialog, I love the characters (Claes is a fabulous Dracula, but Dolly steals the show as the kick-ass Agatha Van Helsing). This is driving me on. I can't wait to see the last episode, but it's late and I don't want to fall asleep and miss anything. The plot twists and the atmosphere are both blowing me away. Just Wow!

My favorite Dracula to date was the one starring Louis Jourdan in, I think, 1977. It was, in my opinion, the most true to the original story and actually gave me nightmares (not easy for a vampire movie to do for me). But this one is firing my imagination in ways I never expected. I started watching expecting to be a bit disappointed, but instead I'm excited.

Wasted opportunity.
sweginwuhangdai2 January 2020
I tried to like this, and even convinced my family to try and watch it together, but it became apparent, especially during tonight's episode, that what we were watching was not a coherent interpretation of a classic in any way, shape or form, and like sherlock, before it, Gatiss and Moffat disappeared up their own black holes of self importance and ruined yet another chance to make something of worth and truly frightening. The first episode, which actually had its moments, but were in turn ruined seconds later by rediculous throw away glib laughs. It really set it up for a fail in this second episode and boy did it ever! Totally lost its way mired inconsequential flippant dialogue which seemed, most of the time, to be penned by a five year old. At times the narrative became completely unintelligible. It really did feel so false and at one point I was hoping that Boris Johnson was about to pop out from behind cabin No. 10! No such luck. Will someone, anyone please stop giving these clowns money to keep making this dumbed down balderdash. Such a shame that such a talented bunch of actors, sfx, and the rest have to work with this drivel. BBC, please stop. I rated this 2/10 for the excellent photography at the beginning of the episode just as the passengers were about to embark.

Sod all the people giving negative reviews. From when it made me laugh I was hooked. It's the only thing the BBC have done right in the last 2 years.

Vampire Travel Diaries
southdavid3 January 2020
Building on last night's first episode, this second of the run is much tighter plotted and all the better for it. . then there is a last minute twist that will either be the making, or the breaking, of the show (at the moment I can't decide).

We rejoin the Count (Claes Bang) and Sister Agatha (Dolly Wells) as bizarrely they sit down to a friendly game of Chess. During the game, Dracula recounts the story of his time on the Demeter. A Russian ship headed for England. Rather than hiding below decks and stalking whatever prey he can at night - this Dracula decides to engage fully with the rest of the passengers - and begins to lead the investigation when they start to disappear. But is the game, and the story, all they appear to be.

This episode, I feel, justified the running time a little more than last time. A much larger cast, including "Sherlock" alumni Jonathan Aris, Clive Russell, Youssef Kerkour, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Sacha Dhawan (who's having quite the start to 2020 - what with this and "Doctor Who"). Each is given a backstory and reason to be on board the ship (even if it's not quite what they think it is). And they're picked off, with the tension increasing each time. Before a midshow twist that changes the dynamics of the episode.

I'm sure that's a definite reference to "Inside Number 9" for us old school "League of Gentlemen" fans to appreciate.

Performances are good across the board, but the two leads remain a standout. It builds to a fine crescendo and then there's the last minute twist. I'll get into that I think when I review the final episode that airs tonight. I was initially happily surprised by it, but the more I think about across the day, the more I'm not as convinced. We'll see where it goes.

All building up nicely
waynelowe19752 January 2020
Well, after the first episode last night and the cliffhanger which we were given right at the end I was looking forward to the second part.

I was a bit sceptical for the first 5 mins of the first episode, but by the end i was well and truly hooked..... The two lead roles, Claes Bang and Dolly Wells are absolutely superb. Personally, I think Dolly steals it for me.....such a talented actor and the comedic quips and one liner replies really lighten the mood but not to a point where the horror is subdued. Tonights second episode has done virtually the same as the first, it has drawn me in with a cliffhanger which looks quite intriguing and really sets up closing the circle on the journey even without yet seeing the third and final episode.

Well done to the two main stars and a massive applause to Dolly.

Dracula returns
ingra883 January 2020
Interesting thing in the US they have the series Van Helsing on Syfy with Kelly Overton as the female protagonist. Set too in the modern time.

This BBC series if it goes to screen in the US will have its work cut out.

Dreadfully embarrassing
namstonk6 January 2020
In a nutshell, not Dracula, not scary, not well written (apparently the pair earned just short of 50k each for this garbage) and hard to believe it was worst than the first episode. All budget spent on first episode, direction, well there is none, not often you feel sorry for actors but dear god. Moffat and Gatiss have lived on their PC nice rubbish far too long and need to get bit and walk off into the sunset.

Another good episode.
LegendaryFang5620 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
That was a twist I wasn't expecting but should have been. This was possibly more captivating than the premiere.

But there is a slight, lingering feeling of confusion within me. I guess I'm more alert if that's even the right word, cautious, perhaps, when it comes to the past, present, and future because of watching The Witcher, so maybe that's more of a burden. It's making me wrongfully preoccupied instead of paying attention.

Anyway, the events in this episode are after the events of the premiere, correct? The whole chess match between Dracula and Agatha made it seem like it was in the past, his past.

Oh, and another thing, did the latter even happen? The way I see it, or rather, the way I'm guessing it to be, is that the chess match wasn't real, never happened, or it did but not in an ordinary sense, like it was a dream happening during the present events on the ship. I'm not sure.
