The major TV studios have all but closed out their business with the broadcast networks for the 2019-2020 season.
In all, 35 new series have been ordered across the Big 4 and The CW, with one or two projects still outstanding as potential contenders for midseason pickups. The union of Disney’s ABC Studios and the 20th Century Fox TV operation in March made Disney Television Studios the largest supplier of new broadcast TV series with a total of 14 new series orders, although the studios operated separately until the merger was formally completed on March 20.
With the buying mostly done, here is a breakdown of where Hollywood’s dominant TV suppliers stand at the Big Four and CW at the close of the 2019 development season. Should any late pick ups be made, this post will be updated.

The message couldn’t have been clearer from the stage at Radio City Music Hall on Monday morning, where NBCUniversal kicked off upfront week with an omnibus presentation covering its broadcast and cable networks.
Linda Yaccarino, NBCU’s chairman of advertising sales and client partnerships, told the assembled advertisers and media buyers that NBCUniversal is preparing a bold foray into the new frontier of streaming but in a configuration where sponsors are welcome. NBCUniversal’s streaming platform, targeted for debut in the U.S. by mid-2020, will use new technology to present TV the old-fashioned way: brought to you by America’s blue-chip advertisers.
“While other companies are pushing advertisers out, we’re bringing you in,” Yaccarino declared in her opening remarks.
As more high-end TV shifts to commercial-free streaming platforms a la Netflix, NBCU sees an opening to differentiate its service by making it largely free, supported by advertising rather than monthly subscription fees.

Stability is the name of the game at NBC as the network heads into the 2019-20 TV season.
With only one new drama and two new comedies on the fall schedule, the network is keeping things simple.
New Jimmy Smitts legal drama, Bluff City Law is taking the 10/9c post-The Voice slot.
NBC typically uses that slot to launch new dramas, but given that The Voice has been fading this season, there's a good chance it won't be the solid launch pad it once was.
This move leaves Manifest off the fall schedule to allow for uninterupted 2020 run, which is probably a good thing given the serialized nature of the series.
The Good Place is moving to 9/8c on a permanent basis for its fourth season. It will be sandwiched between new comedies, Perfect Harmony and Sunnyside.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Will & Grace are both being held for midseason.

NBC is unveiling a year-round schedule next season that keeps several of its signature series, including “Will & Grace,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and freshman drama hit “Manifest,” on the bench until midseason.
The plan is stability in the fall, as Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays remain unchanged, and Thursdays continue to front a four-comedy lineup.
Only one new drama, the Jimmy Smits legal entry “Bluff City Law,” and two new comedies (“Perfect Harmony” and “Sunnyside”) will launch in the fall, as NBC saves most of its new premieres for winter and spring.
In unveiling their new schedule to reporters during a Sunday morning conference call, NBC Entertainment co-chairmen George Cheeks and Paul Telegdy said they “came into this season from the vantage point of extreme stability, but without any complacency.”
The execs singled out comedy as a key part of NBC’s strategy — calling it the “heart of the NBC brand.

NBC executives explained how their Allison Tolman drama pilot, “Emergence,” ended up being ordered to series ABC.
“We had an abundance of choice,” Paul Telegdy, co-chairman, NBC Entertainment, told TheWrap during a conference call with reporters on Sunday. “‘Emergence’ is a great show, but one that we couldn’t find a home for at NBC. We’re delighted it’s found a future at ABC.”
“Emergence” was surprisingly picked up to series by ABC on Saturday, joining the network’s other new series “The Baker and The Beauty,” “For Life,” “Mixed-ish,” “United We Fall” and the Untitled Cobie Smulders Project. The drama, which comes from ABC Studios, stars Tolman, Alexa Swinton, Ashley Aufderheide, Robert Bailey Jr., Zabryna Guevara, Donald Faison and Clancy Brown. It is from Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, with Paul McGuigan on board as director.

NBC is not into change very much this upcoming season, to put it conservatively.
Sure, the network has Melissa McCarthy taking over hosting duties from Steve Harvey for the fourth season of Little Big Shots in the upcoming season, and Will & Grace and last year’s breakout Manifest are both pushed back to midseason. And, yes, there’s now a Mike Schur hour on Thursdays with more of the producer’s The Good Place and his new comedy Sunnyside.
Otherwise, with a scattering of newbies aside, most of the Comcast-owned net’s schedule for the 2019-20 season looks a lot like the season that is just about to end, a lot.
Or as NBC Entertainment co-chairs George Cheeks and Paul Telegdy said earlier today: “we came into this season from the vantage point of extreme stability, but without any complacency.”

With Upfronts Week 2019 nigh, NBC as is tradition was the first broadcast-tv network to announce its schedule for the fall TV season. Conspicuously missing from the lineup are… any dramatic changes. With the exception of its Monday and Thursday skeds, NBC’s fall game plan looks a lot like last fall’s game plan.
Jimmy Smits’ legal drama Bluff City Law snagged the cushy post-Voice perch on Monday, bumping previous occupant Manifest to midseason (where, unlike in Season 1, it will enjoy an uninterrupted run).
Little Big Shots will return at midseason with a new host; Melissa McCarthy has been tapped to replace Steve Harvey.

One of the biggest ones this year may be brewing at ABC as I hear the network is eyeing NBC’s drama pilot Emergence, which is produced by ABC Studios. One of the biggest ones this year may be brewing at ABC as I hear the network is eyeing NBC’s drama pilot Emergence, which is produced by ABC Studios. With two buzzy pilots — NYPD Blue and Heart of Life — out of fall contention for some tweaking , ABC appears to still be high on the Hank Steinberg/50 Cent legal drama, with a major dark horse emerging in romantic one-hour The Baker and the Beauty. As we reported on Friday, ABC was expected to pick up...

NBC has given a series order to another buzzy pilot, musical light drama Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist starring Jane Levy. It hails from Jake in Progress creator Austin Winsberg, Lionsgate, The Tannenbaum Co., Paul Feig’s FeigCo Entertainment and Universal Music Group.
This marks NBC’s first series order to an outside studio this season. It joins the Universal TV-produced dramas Council of Dads and Bluff City Law and comedy Sunnyside. It is the latest hourlong musical drama for NBC, following recent entries Smash and Rise. The network also has choir comedy pilot Perfect Harmony in serious contention.
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist also marks the first broadcast series for Lionsgate since another music-fueled drama, Nashville, which aired for six seasons on ABC and Cmt.
Written by Winsberg and directed by Richard Shepard, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist centers on Zoey Clarke (Levy), a whip-smart computer coder forging her way in San Francisco.

With the network screenings wrapping up, we are heading into the final stage of pilot season when network executives take the pilots that had screened the best/tested the highest and see which of them fit into their schedules for next season. With ABC’s order Thursday of Black-ish‘s young Rainbow-centered prequel Mixed-ish kicking off the new series pickups, here is our final pilot buzz list.
The field of leading ABC drama contenders has narrowed down a bit. Staying strong after the screenings are early standouts Pi drama Stumptown starring Cobie Smulders, the soapy, John Mayer song-inspired Heart of Life, the new NYPD Blue and the untitled Hank Steinberg /50 Cent legal drama. NY Undercover also has supporters; I hear its fate might be tied to that of bubble drama The Rookie as ABC is unlikely to go for three cop dramas in these two and NYPD Blue. I...

It’s late April. Normally at this time TV business’ attention is focused almost squarely on the broadcast pilot season as it is heading into its final stages — network pilot screenings followed by new series pickups. But this is not a normal time. With the WGA-Ata standoff completely dominating the Hollywood conversation following the mass firing of agents by writers, it has been hard for anyone to focus on pilot season. Here is what I hear is hot at the networks. Keep in mind that the information is still incomplete as not all pilots have been delivered to the networks. We will have a fuller picture at the end of next week when most of the pilots will have screened.

“Thank you so much for supporting me [and] supporting the Alien,” La Toya Jackson said after her dramatic unmasking in the seventh episode of “The Masked Singer.” After the Alien was voted the weakest singer by the studio audience and judges Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Robin Thicke and J.B. Smoove, she was forced to take off her mask in front of America. While at-home sleuths had pegged La Toya as Alien, only Nicole and Robin correctly guessed her true identity on the air. Above, watch the video of the latest “Masked Singer” revealed.

NBC has given a pilot order to an untitled single-camera comedy (fka All Together Now) starring Bradley Whitford in his return to the network where he starred on Aaron Sorkin’s The West Wing and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. The comedy hails from frequent collaborators Lesley Wake Webster (Speechless) and Jason Winer (Single Parents), and 20th Century Fox TV, where Winer’s Small Dog Picture Company is based. NBC nabbed the project in October with a put pilot commitment and Whitford executive producing and potentially starring.
Written by Webster, the untitled comedy is about a rural church choir that gets the director it never thought it needed when a salty, Ivy League music professor (Whitford) stumbles through their door.
Webster and Whitford executive produce alongside Winer and Jon Radler of Small Dog Picture Company.
The comedy is expected to incorporate musical numbers, with Adam Anders, who served as executive...
