The most Halo-esque experience in a very long time...
dylanmortiz11 December 2021
After completion of this game on legendary, my entire journey felt so nostalgic, yet it remained so incredibly new that I'm almost at a loss for words.

The campaign hits just the right amount of emotional beats without compromising Master Chief's character. It does an incredibly good job at making the player feel like they are humanity's last hope. The marines are a constant reminder of that through their in-game combat dialogue. For once in a Halo, I was genuinely concerned with keeping as many marines alive as possible.

The AI react incredibly well to your combat, especially on legendary. I found many to be quite relentless. The boss fights felt fresh every time. On legendary, this game's bosses are no pushovers. In fact, some boss fights are so incredibly hard, I was almost at my breaking point. However, in my opinion, playing on legendary should be very difficult. This is one of the hardest legendary experiences since Halo 2. Hunters actually hunt you, they are fast, and become insatiably aggressive when one of their partners dies, brutes have proper rankings in line with the difficulty that spice up the experience, elites are smart, they (and all enemies) know when to take cover, and all other enemies have earned their place as true members of the Banished. When you complete a boss battle, the payoff feels earned, and the story elements tied in with their demise are satisfying.

The environment is unlike any other Halo game. There is nothing quite like being given the freedom to explore this ring and all it's secrets. This campaign feels like it takes from the best components of the original trilogy. The music, the ambience, the banter between marines, it all feels right.

I was worried about this game after the let down Halo 5 was, however, I think this game passes as the best Halo since Halo 3. The grappleshot adds an incredibly fun element to the gameplay that I found came in handy whenever I was in a pinch.

I was happy with the campaign overall, however, it is definitely not without its faults. While I am pleased with the ending, the game still somehow felt too short. I understand this is a live game, and that additional content in the future is without question, however, after a 6 year wait, I wanted to milk this game for everything it was worth immediately. I will just have to look forward to extra content to come. My second camplaint is that I would have loved to see more characters. The game does not give solid details on the fates of some of our most beloved (and hated) characters from the halo universe. I will look forward to getting some solid answers in the future if we are lucky.

I am happy knowing that this is without a doubt the best Halo developed by 343 to date. And you should be happy too if you're a fan of Halo. This unconventional experience has accomplished the impossible task of reinvigorating a hurting franchise by breathing new life into the gameplay. I think a 8.7/10 is a well deserved rating. If you need me, I will be exploring Zeta Halo at a leisurely pace!

Great Campaign, Weak Multiplayer
pk12338 January 2022
This one fixed everything that Halo 5 did wrong...and did everything wrong that Halo 5 got right.

Halo 5 had a weak campaign but the multiplayer was nearly perfect. Infinite flips that on its head and gives us a fantastic campaign but pretty weak multiplayer with wonky aiming. Overall a great game but the multiplayer could use work for sure.

Also seriously lacking in content. They are just now beginning to drop content that should have shipped with the game (writing this a year later).

Vindication
zerocool339710 December 2021
This is definitely vindication for 343. There is lots to do and it's the most open world Halo to date.

The story is gripping and going in a direction that will appease fans of the franchise. There are gonna be some fans out there that are gonna be like "it's not Bungie" I totally get that, it's not. This is however a shining example of how to build on a legacy of a franchise. They've taken what Bungie started all those years ago and made it their own. Kept what made it a class of its own. Let's not forget, some of those creators work for 343.

I can't say I've seen any broken mechanics and I don't feel any enemy is a bullet sponge. There is some challenge and it's not gonna be a cake walk. I think it's all for the better. I have to also applaud them for the craftiest AI in a game. One that kept me on my toes a bit and on more than one occasion flanked me, kept me busy and then descended on me with force and fury.

Give 343 a chance, give yourself a chance to enjoy it. Play it with fresh eyes like you'd never played a Halo game before. I could sit here and criticise the game but it should be applauded on its own merits. Job well done. I'm excited to see where the next story takes place.

It is a good game with great story but the multiplayer is awful.

The graphic is ok.

MICROSOFT'S BIG BAD POWERHOUSE RETURNS!!!
dlcinaglia9 December 2021
Halo Infinite. Need I say more? This game is a high graphics, bulleted hell, god-tier soundtrack injected abomination that everyone, despite if you're a Halo fan or not, can easily enjoy. Xbox has certainly out-done themselves this time and Playstation can do nothing to outdo it. As much as the campaign itself is a bit lackluster when put into perspective, the soundtrack, mere existence of Chief, and graphics make up for it. HEAVILY recommend for all people who loved the previous Halo (except for 5) games.

Incredible story, fun and immersive experience.
fontyn-7646224 December 2021
Beautiful story, beautiful environment, fun sandbox play and a solid multiplayer that just needs more content. In my eyes, being a halo fan since the combat evolved days, halo has returned to what we all love it for. Bravo 343. Looking forward to how the story continues from here on out!

Excellent game.

Love the campaign, the story was everything I hoped for, exciting, sad, happy-sad.

Couldn't be happier with the way they brought it back from how Halo 5 turned out.

A step in the right direction
zakmasterson-594366 January 2022
Halo is probably my favourite game franchise of all time and I love all the bungie games. I too was disappointed with 343's two games and was admittedly both nervous but very excited for this game. However I really did enjoy this games campaign and it's multiplayer however both have flaws and need work. Mainly this game is carried by it's amazing and well designed gameplay. This is genuinely one of the most fun halo games ever. The story and characters have their moments but some of the writing was a bit weird and definitely towards the end the story made a few questionable decisions. The open world aspect is fine but once you've had your fun in it for an hour you've basically done everything cause a lot of it is the same and repetitive. However like I said the game is extremely fun and the story genuinely has some great heartwarming moments, apparently there is DLC which I am now very much looking forward to. Overall this is a big step in the right direction and i am happy 343 have learned from their mistakes.

Very fun, not a great story
walthershunter31 March 2022
My review mostly centers around the campaign.

In terms of the campaign, it's a super fun, worthwhile game. It's challenging enough to where you have to be strategic. There's also lots of new abilities such as the grapple, dodge, etc. That spice it up and make it feel like a more modern game while still giving you the classic halo experience. I also very much like that at the end of each mission there is a boss fight which is challenging and very satisfying to complete.

In terms of the story, it's not very good. In this sense, it's more your classic video game story with cheesy dialogue, bad guys trash talking, etc.

Even though the story isn't very good, they got the most important thing right, which is making a fun, satisfying gaming experience. I highly recommend it.

A disappointing campaign
IsThatJoseph2118 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
For this review, I'll only talk about the campaign. Even though I got into the Halo series in 2018, it has quickly become one of my favorite video game franchises. Like many Halo fans, I was bummed out when Halo Infinite got delayed by an entire year. Now that it's finally here, I'm sad to say that the game didn't live up to my expectations.

The best way to describe Halo Infinite's campaign is that it's a story that takes place after the interesting stuff happened. I know a lot of people didn't like the ending to Halo 5, but I was actually interested to see where the story could go. I'm probably one of the few people who didn't mind Cortana becoming a villain. Instead of focusing on Master Chief, the Arbiter, and Fireteam Osiris confronting Cortana, Infinite does a time skip. Because of this, all of the storylines and characters from Halo 5 are either ignored or shown in brief flashbacks.

With Cortana, she only shows up in flashbacks. The way Infinite wraps up her storyline is terrible. After becoming the galactic dictator, we get a brief cutscene of her feeling bad about her actions, then she dies off-screen. We get a message where she says goodbye to Master Chief, but it doesn't have the same emotional impact as Halo 4.

As for Fireteam Osiris, they don't show up in the campaign at all. I didn't like Fireteam Osiris, but it feels weird to introduce those characters in the previous game, then completely drop them in the next one. 343 could've fleshed them out here and made them more interesting. If 343 didn't plan on expanding Fireteam Osiris, I think it would've been better to make them the fallen Spartans that Master Chief encounters throughout the game.

Looking back at this new series, the storyline is a mess. The 343 games don't tell a cohesive story like the original Bungie trilogy. You can clearly tell this new storyline wasn't planned out at all. I mean, just look at how they handled Cortana. They kill her off in 4, then bring her back as a villain in 5, then only show her in flashbacks and kill her offscreen in Infinite.

For the actual story in Infinite, it's lackluster. Even though Infinite is an open world game, it's story feels like the smallest in the franchise. With Master Chief's new companions (The Weapon and Echo-216), I thought they were fine. Although, I did cringe at some of the Weapon's lines. Infinite also continues the 343 tradition of having boring villains. I thought the Banished and the Harbinger were uninteresting. I couldn't care less about the Endless plotline that Infinite seems to be setting up for future games.

Despite all of my criticisms, there are aspects that I enjoyed about Infinite's campaign. I liked the open world aspects of the game. For a franchise that's 20 years old, I think the open world genre was a good way to change things up. Another aspect of the gameplay I liked was the grapple hook. I had fun using the grapple hook to traverse the map and disarm enemies. It'll be hard to go back to the older games without it. While I previously criticized Master Chief's new companions for having some cringey lines, personality-wise, I liked them more than any of the characters from Halo 5.

Overall, Halo Infinite had a disappointing campaign with a few redeeming qualities. For my 343 campaign ranking, it would be 4, Infinite, and 5. I give Halo Infinite's campaign a 6/10.

Shoulda put a ring on it..
TheOracleYT27 December 2021
So this is a halo game that has a super fun premise as it started off good.. but fell flat at the end. It story where It ended on a obvious sequel bait to another halo where it really should've ended at 3 or better yet.. get better writers to create a more fulfilling story.. The open world got seriously repetitive after awhile with just rocks and trees everywhere.. at least I had fun grappling everywhere like Spider-Chief and throwing bomb crates on the covenant reskins 5/10.

Halo Infinite is the best game since Halo 3
BryanBranly171 October 2023
Halo Infinite is the best halo we got since Halo 3 for a good amount of reasons. First is it's awesome campaign. The campaign from this game was not only a massive improvement from the last two Halo games (especially Halo 5) but it returned to what made the first 3 games so iconic, saving lives and kicking some ass. The Banished were great villains in the story and the emotional weight was high especially between Master Chief and Cortana 2.0. But not only is the campaign great but the multiplayer is also great. The mechanics & physics feel smoother and the maps are great for kicking major ass. Forge is also fun.

Multiplayer leaves something to be desired but the campaign is rad
foxypoo21 June 2022
When I first played the multiplayer, I was a little disappointed that there was no classic SWAT, you know, no shields, DMR and Battle Rifle kinda deal. They have some kind of weird, no shield, slayer kind of mode that is similar, but I really just want SWAT back like the good ol' days. I was confused about that for a while, and then I realized that the DMR isn't even in the game, so I'm not sure what the deal is with that. I can only assume that it'll be added sometime later with the new seasons, but I'd greatly appreciate a classics weapon like that already in game. Anyway, on multiplayer I've mostly spent my time chilling on Fiesta, and the new last Spartan standing, Gun Game kind of mode where everyone sweats their balls off. I have some fun on these, but only for about 30 minutes to maybe an hour and then I get kinda bored. I wish there was something keeping me there. I remember playing SWAT on Reach, 4, hell, even 5 for hours and hours. There really isn't anything in this that has captured my attention quite yet, besides....

The campaign rocks my socks off. I've been waiting so long for a open world FPS game, and ofc Halo does it. The beginning mission is a high stress, classic Halo mission and it's a perfect way to introduce the story. I loved playing through it, and then randomly showing up at the Ring was insane. My jaw dropped to the floor just by how insanely far the graphics have came. The gameplay (to me at least) feels mostly the same as Halo 4 with maybe a little bit of Reach and 5 sprinkled here and there (I can compare it to those easily because I played those three the most). The campaign feels like an all out war, capturing and liberating FOBs and POW camps is so fun, and is moderately challenging. I hope there are some more Boss fights cause I had a blast with the ones already given. The world feels as open as Skyrim but it cuts the travel time in half. It takes a few minutes to travel from destination to destination instead of literal hours. Speaking of Skyrim, the NPC's are about as hilarious as Skyrim. Sometimes they say and do the funniest things and I love it. I guess my only concern is that this could get old after a while. A lot of the missions feel the same, and I guess my question is what will be new in future updates? New weapons? New bosses? New location types? I can only assume that the answer to both of these questions are yes, but only time will tell.

Anyway, this game is fun, and it's pretty much free, so I'd recommend it. 8/10.

Fun gameplay, good story, okay multiplayer
jeremytongpao-6721215 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It was fun to get back into Halo and play through the missions, explore the open world and find secrets and all that, but while the gameplay was great, the story was nothing special. It was good, but not as great as the original Halo trilogy. Very basic villain and not many interesting characters. Multiplayer has been very poorly handled. You can't choose which game mode you want to play, there aren't many game modes and customisation is mainly achieved through micro transactions. The game could have been better, but I'm still solidly happy with what we got.

Decent gameplay, poor story
numenorsniper-6639614 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
It's a fun and addicting game, but the story makes no sense and is quite badly written. I've been playing Halo since 2001, and have noticed that 343 has gotten worse at storytelling and writing from game to game. Halo 4 was very well written, full of emotion and compelling dialogue. Halo 5 was a bit of a mess with a lot of cringe, and yet oddly that still has stronger dialogue and writing than Halo Infinite.

Here's a list of stuff about the game that I had a problem with:

  • Scorpion tank has no marine side mounting
  • When you die the voice lines just stop
  • Annoying Spanish guy with bad lines and who is only in cutscenes. Why is he in the game?

  • Long loading times after death
  • No manual revert to last checkpoint
  • No manual saves
  • Audio lines trigger in different approaches even though the target has already been killed
  • Marines get stuck on nothing or jump off cliffs off the map
  • Warthogs are too floaty and get stuck on rocks too easily
  • Marines stand right under the vehicle drop in the FOBs, and get squished
  • Marines jump in front or stand in way of moving vehicles and easily get run over
  • Uninspiring music, no new themes
  • Cringey and terrible writing in places
  • Marines voice lines trigger in one spot and not stay with the actual marine when moving
  • Assets get glitched out and the game soft locks
  • Bad writing, I got bored at the Silent Auditorium as the "big reveal" was so deflating and stupid
  • Repetitive combat
  • Clunky switching between the four equipments with a controller
  • I hate the Spanish guy, he's pointless and annoying
  • How did Atriox beat Cortana? It's not explained? Why is Atriox and the brutes in the game?

  • Bad story, no stakes
  • The open world aspect could have been better, lots of the map is empty and not with much going on
  • Severe lack of characters, no epic story moments
  • Artifacts / Forerunner Rings / Archives are not recorded in match from the map to the database, for example in my database it shows I'm missing artifact vii, but when I locate that on the map it shows as completed. When examining which one i'm missing by cross referencing a guide, artifact iv showed up in my database as collected, but it's not on my map, and when I went there it was yet uncollected, and then showed as a different artifact.

  • No coop
  • No level select or mission replay, so getting skulls is only doable from a new game
  • No physical skull shows in your hand when you collect them
  • No power ups, i.e overshield, invis, bubble shield, regen field, etc
  • Brute chopper doesn't splatter vehicles anymore
  • Rescuing squads still mission passes when all the marines died
  • Half of the map is unexplorable, protected by "return to battlefield" barriers
  • Boring boss battles
  • Cringey ending, why does MC give respect to Escharum when he's dying? He killed everyone on the Infinity
  • The original Halos had horror elements with the Flood etc, but that element and all the main elements from the original Halos are absent in Infinite, i.e. Mystery
  • Flat villains
  • No threats or pressure or tension
  • Lots of Brutes around, but no Brute Shot, Mauler or Brute Plasma Rifle
  • No gauss warthog
  • No prometheans even though there are hardlight weapons

Despite all of those complaints, it's still a fun game, with decent gameplay. The strongest aspect of the game is the enemies, especially their voice-lines.

Overall in terms of nonsensical story in relation to the lore and essential plot points from previous Halo games, I'd rank this game as the worst Halo story yet, even worse than Halo 5, which is a tall order that I never thought would happen.

The redeeming qualities of the game manage to keep this at a 7/10 for me. Sadly, it feels the least like a Halo game that any Halo game has ever felt. And that ending, my god the cringe.

Nevertheless, worth playing. I'm already on my 5th playthrough just because it's fun to explore and discover all the game has to offer in terms of collectibles, easter eggs and skulls. Just that the story really tarnishes this game for me, and as an avid Halo fan for the past 20 years, I just felt hurt and disappointed at the end of this campaign. The storytelling magic that the original Halo games had seems to be completely out of reach for 343 sadly. When will they learn how to write a compelling Halo story?

Extremely Disappointing (spoilers)
navien83328 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm reviewing the campaign, not multiplayer. Multiplayer in games is lame anyway. Seems like Halo wanted to focus on multiplayer more than campaign like Call of Duty. Anyway...

The campaign was extremely disappointing. The story was horrible, everything major that happened happened offscreen beforehand. It's an open world (a small open world) sandbox. It's a Halo version of Far Cry/Infamous/GTA/etc. Very repetitive side objectives that get old fast. Lame AI, both marines and banished. A very boring and long winded generic villain. And no actual ending. No co-op, no mission repeats without starting the game all over. Both Weapon and Echo are boring or cringe. Many aspects from previous games not even in this one.

My biggest problem is the lack of everything. No story. No Arbiter. No Cortana. No Covenant. No Fred, Linda, and Kelly. No Fire Team Osirus. No Palmer. No Spartans. No Halsey. No flood. No Laskey. No Atriox. You get little tidbits from audio logs. Lame.

Pros: -Graphics were great -New fun weapons -Once you unlock the Wasp traveling is easy -Spartan cores was a nice idea, but they did it wrong -good soundtrack

Cons: -non-existent story -AI lame, glichy, boring -Weapon and Echo were annoying and cringy -you're all alone (don't give me that "last hope" crap), very boring -very repetitive missions and side objectives -no actual ending -vehicles suck unless you're on a completely flat surface

The game added absolutely nothing to the Halo universe or story. We got a Halo Far Cry and it was lame. Epic fail 343. Epic fail. We deserved a great game after years of waiting and you got lazy and gave us space Far Cry.

Halo Infinite's Open World Disappoints
SimplySam1519 February 2023
Halo Infinite takes a new direction and offers players an open-world experience for the first time. However, those who follow the relatively short story will quickly realize that the open world is made up of several small areas, eventually leading to a linear area in the last few hours of gameplay that cannot be left, feeling like previous Halo games. The open world seems like a means to an end rather than something the game truly required. Additionally, the small open world suffers from various issues, like many other games. The world is empty, and there are no interesting points that invite exploration, leading to the typical and dull task of completing points on the map. Unfortunately, the story is also not particularly exciting and did not necessitate an open world. Perhaps something better could have been created if the goal was not an open-world game. Nonetheless, the gameplay, which is the biggest strength of the Halo series, is incredibly enjoyable, and the game deserves credit for the fact that I had fun playing it for 15-20 hours. After Halo Guardians, it represents a significant step forward, but the series has delivered much better in the past decades.

It's ok. 343i are underachievers.
wolfghostninja13 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
You've played Halo Infinite before, it just wasn't called Halo Infinite. There's lots to like I'm going to talk about the stuff that sucks...

If you've played FarCry 3, 4 or 5, then you have already played this game.

Open world game mechanics are content light and they tend be heavy on fetch quests and few are as content light as HI. There are a few collectibles sprinkled around the map, but nothing beyond the standard datapad and dull audio recording. This is a huge contrast to the MCC remasters and the other 343 games, which are cutscene rich and outclass HI in environmental storytelling. Previous titles criss-cross the galaxies, but here the open world forces us into monotony.

Boss fights with healthbars try to break that monotony, but there are plenty of powerful enough weapons so no boss ever really threatens, being open world, most boss fights can be dealt with from a safe distance. Gone is the revert to last checkpoint feature that has accompanied every single Halo game, allowing you to replay sections over and over, discovering new ways to destroy the opposition, instead when an area is cleared of enemies in HI they are gone for good. Just as well, the map "design" is abysmal, compared to say Halo CE or even Halo 4, by giving the player so much space to use, the map mechanics of previous games are made useless, so to make the game fun there are plenty of power weapons, 8 grenades to spam, lots of AoE weapons, and those ridiculous explosive throwables everywhere. This means the trad Halo gameplay of chess combat is gone, and instead we are left with a Doom Eternal clone in a FarCry sandbox.

Before playing this I did a heroic run of all the games starting from Reach and culminating with HI, and Halo 4 is a better game than HI. I wonder how many people will actually complete the campaign?

Yes, the gameplay is a huge improvement on Halo 5, but going open world has turned Halo into a chore. Getting around the map is an inconvenience alien to Halo games, and frankly the missions in Halo CE - which all take place on an intact ring - had brilliant, huge, interesting outdoor environments far more explorable than anything in HI by comparison.

The covenant weapons have all been nerfed, the Needler a shadow of its former potency, the plasma rifle gone and the plasma pistol nerfed. The AR has received a long-overdue buff, but the BR has been nerfed instead. The Hydra is a beast and there are many weapons that are new and fun to use.

There are some light RPG elements, but is content light and the upgrade UI couldn't be more basic. Retrieving the upgrades feels like a chore because the world is so big, repetitive, and awkward to navigate.

The console combat at higher difficulties is completely ruined because of the bad grenade switching mechanic on controllers. I thought this was completely unacceptable and bordering on stupid. Just let the player cycle through the grenades instead of having to remember a button combo for each grenades, until this feature is changed the game is not worth bothering with above normal difficulty.

The multiplayer is where Halo Infinite shines. Ignoring the F2P model and its problems, the gameplay in multiplayer is where the player is challenged, rather than the campaign, which is either too easy or too difficult and never feels compelling as say Halo Reach or Halo CE.

All in all, it's a mixed bag, I think the game is unfinished and suffers from poor environments. Having taken 6 years to get this far it is an underachievement, but following on from Halo 5 this is a huge improvement for the franchise. It's a very good game, but not a great one.

Anticlimactic
chadmabe20 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
We spent Halo 4 and 5 getting invested into characters (Laskey, Palmer, etc.), only for them to have no screen time whatsoever in this game. Cortana is already dead at the beginning of the game, and we are just left with "echoes." I was expecting a similar story, but Chief and the Infinity, with all the characters mentioned, working together throughout the game on Zeta Halo trying to bring Cortana down before she can activate the Rings, or worse. Instead, it's working with a wannabe Cortana to fight some annoying brutes. The main one, Atriox, isn't even in the game, either. Just cutscenes. Halo 5 had an AMAZING ending, but this was just sad.

Disappointing
andrewskaines11 December 2021
Simply put it is fun to play, but the story is a joke. The side character Echo-219 (the pilot) is annoying, the main villain is a caricature, and the "mystery" is that there is something worse than the flood. Of course there is. Because you can't tell you good story with what existed already. The devil did an amazing job making the game, it actually feels like the fallow up to halo 3 we never got. But the writers and the director are a joke.
