J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions has partnered with newly formed outfit NoneMore Productions to produce an adaptation of Charlie Mackesy’s illustrated book “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse.”
The 30-minute short will feature hand-drawn animation capturing the look and spirit of the book, and will see a team of artists work alongside Mackesy to bring the project to the big screen.
The book tells the tale of a young boy who encounters a mole, a fox and a horse on a walk in the countryside, sharing with each of them profound conversations about love, life and companionship.
Mackesy teamed with “Pear Cider and Cigarettes” producer Cara Speller to form NoneMore Productions to extend the world of Mackesy’s book into new media. NoneMore will work with the author and additional partners to develop his stories for film, television and other formats.

Steve Kornacki has a new job that lets him keep his old uniform.
MSNBC viewers revere the khaki-and-dress-shirt-clad correspondent’s ability to synthesize reams of polling data that helps them understand the twists and turns of various elections. Just a month ago, Kornacki manipulated a giant touch screen during hours and hours of MSNBC 2020 election coverage — and helped millions of anxious viewers get through one of the most harrowing political events in recent memory.
Now he’s hoping to do the same for football fans.
Kornacki just finished a second week of Sunday duty for NBC Sports, making regular appearances on ”Football Night in America” and the halftime show of ”Sunday Night Football.” He’s not looking at how many votes Trump or Biden may have left in Arizona’s Maricopa County. He’s examining the potential for the Miami Dolphins or Baltimore Ravens to reach the playoffs. “There’s...

News junkies often develop a tight relationship with a favorite TV anchor or cable-news outlet. Mosheh Oinounou hopes some of them will turn instead to a “news concierge.”
The former executive producer of “CBS Evening News” is among the many journalists discovering they don’t need a traditional media apparatus — say a TV-network control room or a giant printing press — to serve up information and analysis. Some reporters are taking to independent newsletters via companies like Substack. Oinounou has found a perch for himself on Instagram, where he helps everyone from random followers to a handful of celebrities make sense of current events. He even takes requests to help explain specific topics. Joe Jonas is among those asking him questions.
“My feed is sort of Drudge Report meets Axios meets The Skimm — all on Instagram,” he says in an interview.

Angelina Jolie is set to direct “Unreasonable Behaviour,” a biopic about famed British war photographer Sir Don McCullin.
Based on McCullin’s autobiography of the same name, the movie is being produced by Tom Hardy and Dean Baker under their Hardy Son & Baker banner alongside Working Title Films’ Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. McCullin and Mark George are exec producing.
Gregory Burke is writing the screenplay for “Unreasonable Behaviour,” which is described as “an unflinching account of the celebrated British war photographer’s life, which took him from poverty-stricken, wartime London to some of the world’s most dangerous war zones.”
McCullin rose to fame for his black and white images taken in Vietnam and Cambodia while he was working for The Observer and The Sunday Times Newspapers. The British photographer risked his life to capture these images of war, which are highly regarded for their depiction of human suffering.

I’m a sucker for black and white horror films and thrillers. Hold That Ghost! (1941) and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) are the closest I ever got to an actual horror film when I was a child. The latter actually frightened me and gave me more than a handful of nightmares while in kindergarten. As I got older, I thrilled to the suspense-filled Psycho (1960) by Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Wise’s The Haunting (1963), and George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968) on network television viewings. I picked up a VHS copy of John Llewelyn Moxey’s masterful The City of the Dead under the insipid title of Horror Hotel and discovered a classic that I love to this day. There is an overall spookiness that I associate with black and white that I wish contemporary horror film directors would go back to.

In the latest TV ratings, ABC’s coverage of the NBA Finals Game 5 delivered the series’ largest audience yet — 5.7 million total viewers, per Nielsen fast nationals — while rising a tenth in the demo from Game 4, with a 2.0.
Both sets of preliminary numbers will of course adjust up in the Nielsen finals, though this year’s NBA Finals thus far have been drawing a little more than half the audience of 2019’s, which was held as usual in the spring (and under very different circumstances).

Regal Cinemas owner Cineworld Group has confirmed the temporary suspension of its U.S. and U.K operations starting Thursday, confirming reports that first emerged Saturday.
In a statement released Monday, the group said: “In response to an increasingly challenging theatrical landscape and sustained key market closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Cineworld confirms that it will be temporarily suspending operations at all of its 536 Regal theatres in the U.S. and its 127 Cineworld and Picturehouse theaters in the U.K. from Thursday, 8 October 2020.”
The group attributed the closure to the pipeline of studio films drying up, as major U.S. markets, especially New York, remain closed. “Without these new releases, Cineworld cannot provide customers in both the U.S. and the U.K. — the company’s primary markets — with the breadth of strong commercial films necessary for them to consider coming back to theaters against the backdrop of Covid-19.

Four is the magic number for Renee Zellweger. She won her fourth Golden Globe on Sunday, Best Drama Actress for “Judy,” pushing her up to fourth place on the all-time film winners list.
Zellweger has now tied Tom Hanks and Shirley MacLaine with a quartet of film statuettes. The Oscar champ previously garnered Best Comedy/Musical Actress for “Nurse Betty” (2000) and “Chicago” (2002) and Best Supporting Actress for “Cold Mountain” (2003). A seven-time nominee, she’s had two nominations since then, for “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” (2004) and “Miss Potter” (2006).
The win also makes Zellweger one of three women who’ve won all three actress film prizes, joining Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts.
Only three people have more film wins: Streep holds the record with seven, followed by Jack Nicholson with six and Rosalind Russell, who converted all five of her Globe bids into victories.

CBS is sure going to miss “The Big Bang Theory.” The long-running sitcom, which ended in May after 12 seasons, was a ratings bazinga for the Eye network up until the very end. And in fitting with its popularity, the comedy’s May 16 finale, “The Change Constant”/”The Stockhom Syndrome,” was the highest-rated telecast of a scripted series on linear TV in 2019 — averaging nearly 25 million viewers. ” It was also the top-rated scripted broadcast telecast (and No. 1 comedy airing) of the year with adults 18-49, averaging a 5.0 rating.
“The Big Bang Theory” ultimately landed 13 of the top 100 most-watched telecasts of the year, while spin-off “Young Sheldon” grabbed another 12 slots.
But it was ultimately another broadcast that cemented CBS’ status as the most-watched linear network of the year in total viewers: Super Bowl Liii. No surprise, the matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and eventual winner New England Patriots was the top telecast of the year,...

The Voice’s Tuesday-night results show removed the “semi” from “semifinals” as it cut in half the Top 8. Based on Monday’s performances — if we ignore the ’80s duets, only one of which couldn’t be filed between “uninspired” and “unlistenable” — TVLine’s picks for the Final Four appeared to be poised to make it (this, despite the fact that Team Legend’s unstoppable Katie Kadan had given a solo performance that was a first of its kind for her: good instead of great). Which contestants actually advanced to the finals?

The Kellyanne and George Conway public something happened again on Monday. And because our present day political world seems rather incomprehensible, their whatever-you’d-call-it kinda fits.
The latest drama started after counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway quote tweeted a video of Democratic candidate Joe Biden telling an odd story about the hair on his legs at the 2017 dedication and re-naming of a Wilmington, Del., public pool in honor of the former vice president. Kellyanne wrote, “Sleepy Joe is Creepy Joe. We need Ukraine’s help to defeat This guy?...

We’re just three weeks away from the season 17 finale of “The Voice.” The Top 10 take to the stage on Monday’s show to sing for survival. Only eight of them will make the cut when Carson Daly reveals the results on Tuesday’s episode. This is one of the most competitive editions ever of this NBC reality competition series.
Three artists are fighting it out for first place in our poll of “The Voice” viewers. In first place is Ricky Duran, who has a whopping 22% of the vote total. If he goes all the way and takes the season 17 title, it would give his coach Blake Shelton that elusive seventh win. Right behind him at 20% is Katie Kadan, who is coached by reigning champ John Legend. Rounding out the top 3 with 16% support is Rose Short, who is mentored by Gwen Stefani.
This No Doubt lead singer lost her previous three seasons as a coach.

Talk about a jaw-dropper! Gold Derby readers were confident Max Boyle of Team Kelly Clarkson would advance to the next round on “The Voice,” which made his elimination in Tuesday’s episode all the more shocking. This 23-year-old pop singer from Toledo, Ohio performed “Thinking Out Loud” as his “save me” song (watch above), but the live Twitter voters chose to save Joana Martinez of Team Gwen Stefani instead. That resulted in the eliminations of Max and Cali Wilson of Team Blake Shelton, the other person in the bottom three. Will you miss Max on “The Voice”? Sound off down in the comments section.

“The Little Mermaid Live” continues to perform swimmingly in the TV ratings.
The ABC musical topped all non-football shows for the week of Nov. 4, growing 34% from its Live+Same Day rating and 30% in total viewership to finish with a 3.4 and 11.7 million total viewers. That represents pretty substantial growth for a live event given that, for instance, Fox’s “Rent” only gained roughly 730,000 total viewers to “Little Mermaid”‘s 2.7 million. “Little Mermaid Live” was the third most watched show of the week, behind only “FBI” and “NCIS” on CBS.
“The Masked Singer” came second in the 18-49 demo with a 3.0 after seven days of delayed viewing, followed by “This Is Us” with a 2.8. “Stumptown” was once again the strongest performer in delayed among the new fall shows, doubling its total viewers to 6 million.

‘The Voice’ Top 13 results: Marybeth Byrd gets Apple Music bonus but who will sing for Instant Save?
On Monday’s episode of “The Voice,” the Top 13 artists coached by Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani performed. The goal for each contestant was to have the most streamed song on Apple Music by Tuesday at 10 am E.T./ 7 a.m. Pt so that they reaped the benefit of a five-times vote multiplier.
In a troubling sign of the popularity of these season 17 contestants, none of them cracked the Top 10 on iTunes; this was the benchmark for the multiplier until this season. The closest were two of the artists on Team John Legend: Marybeth Byrd ranked the highest, coming in at #18 for her rendition of the Vince Gill hit “Go Rest High On That Mountain.” Katie Kadan was right behind with her cover of “I’m Going Down” by Rose Royce.

After posting big numbers in the Live+Same Day TV ratings, ABC’s “The Little Mermaid Live” has emerged at the top of the charts for the week it aired after three days of delayed viewing.
The live musical, which featured Auliʻi Cravalho in the titular role and a powerhouse performance from Queen Latifah as the evil Ursula, grew 26% from a 2.6 rating to a 3.2 in Live+3. It managed to hold off “The Masked Singer” on Fox and “This Is Us” on NBC, which grew to a 2.8 and a 2.4 respectively.
It will be interesting to see whether “The Little Mermaid” can carry home the trident after seven days of delayed viewing, given that live TV typically grows less than non-live.
In terms of total viewership, the special came second in L+Sd behind “NCIS,” but after three days of delayed viewing it managed just under 11 million total viewers and was overtaken...
