Interesting at first but goes off the rails
fraser-simons1 July 2021
There's some great shots, good actors, good production values all-round. Even the script is pretty good for about the first half. Then Eckhart sort of spirals, becoming less believable and the script takes a turn into full con conspiracy theory stuff that makes less and less sense. While they try to make this interesting with him being mentally ill, it doesn't feel well done enough to be anything other than something that could have been fun, but stumbles repeatedly.

5 stars is being very generous but I like the actors
Leungzy5 December 2020
Firstly I'll start off by saying I think Aaron Eckhart, Tommy Lee Jones and Heather Graham are all good actors and they do a decent job in the movie. However, Eckhart's acting is a bit over the top sometimes that it almost comes across as a cheesy B-movie, especially the shots when it's zooming out from his face when he's having flashbacks or waking up.

The story itself was quite predictable, at about the halfway point you can hazard a guess about the main character, although they don't explain much in the movie. At times I found this movie a bit boring and slow despite it being only 90mins.

Some of the shots and the sequencing also weren't enjoyable either as it was just all over the place much like the story. I also wasn't a fan of the ending. When it all happened I didn't feel any emotion for the character at all other than being glad the movie was over.

Finally, this was just a small nitpicking thing, but if you are paranoid like the main character and afraid of being spied on that you are constantly changing your phone SIM card, you definitely would not plug a random usb stick into your laptop that has been mysteriously slipped through your door.

"You're not paranoid: They really are watching you."
TxMike25 March 2021
This is a movie that should be better than it is. The actors are fine, the storytelling and editing are suspect. Also some of the dialog is very difficult to understand, requiring subtitles turned on at times we wanted to be sure of what was discussed. It takes place in the fictional New Mexico town of Wander where everyone knows everyone else and strangers in town are stopped and warned. A paranoid detective, deep into conspiracy theories, is hired to investigate the real cause of a death, a woman found in the middle of the road with a deep wound in her chest near her heart. The editing is jumpy and somewhat erratic, you are often not sure what you are seeing and if it is present or flashback, or even imagined by the paranoid detective. I enjoyed the viewing at some level but don't consider it a particularly good movie. The writer and director, a team of sorts, have limited experience with movies and it shows. My wife and I watched it at home on DVD from our public library.

Here's confusion worse confounded

One day in the far distant future mankind will uncover all the secrets of the universe. The last thing uncovered will be what the heck this movie's about.

Who is this for?
DiesIraeComing6 December 2020
It's like the script was written by someone who wanted to make money off the popularity of 'conspiracy theories' but they didn't know anything about conspiracy theories. So the writer(s) got together one weekend and surfed a conspiracy theory message board for a few hours, jotted down a few frequently used phrases, then forced them into a nonsensical story.

I finished it wondering who it was made for...because people who loathe conspiracy theorists aren't going to like it. And actual conspiracy theorists are going roll their eyes at all the cliches.

Lastly, I'm a fan of Eckart's but his bug-eyed 'crazy conspiracy theorist' character looked like something I'd see at my local community theater.

Hand held cam, mumbled incoherent dialogue, dark badly composed scenes.
Opinate17 February 2021
Need I say more?

I love the actors but just couldn't finish it. I couldn't hear half the lines, couldn't see the expressions on the actor's faces.

If you have to create tension with a hand held you shouldn't be making films.

Good settings, good star cast but a very weak n predictable end. Screenplay is not at all captivating.
Fella_shibby6 December 2020
I love detective movies set up in the rural or sun soaked settings but this one is far from it.

6 stars only cos of the two lead actors and that too, coincidentally both played Harvey Dent/Two-Face.

A mentally unstable conspiracy theorist and private detective is hired to investigate an accident in a small town. The detective suspects the accident to be a murder n part of a conspiracy cover up that caused the death of his daughter. Sounds good uh. But the execution is not at all interesting or captivating. Sneaking in and outta Fox Hole so easily, everything served on the table n no threat involved, directly or indirectly, cud have at least put some sense into our detective. A very weak n predictable ending.

Beyond stupid. Do not waste your time.
bheydam6 December 2020
This movie is comically stupid. Honestly, it is a complete and total waste of your time. It is not suspenseful and just poorly made. I have no idea why sensible people in the studios don't veto garbage like this. Anyone giving a positive review is providing false information or affiliated. Trust me. Horrendous.

Good indie film

What a film! Very stylistic so it's not for everyone. They did an exceptional job exploring the manic nature of grief. Those who can relate will like this.

Frankly It's A Mess
wisewebwoman13 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The actors do their best with a script that doesn't work and a sound problem that blurs most of the dialogue into subtitle turnon.

A cop with a limp from an accident that kills his daughter and puts his wife into paralysis tries to solve a murder on the highway. Or does he?

Conspiracy theories abound and honestly, I couldn't finish it. It was far too muddled, convoluted and raised they eyebrows of suspended disbelief. Ladders going to the roof inside a morgue?

The crippled cop jumping off a roof and walking away?

A suspect wearing a black Stetson all the time on her blonde head so she's clearly identified.

Visions and pills. Hallucinations. Meditations.

I could not engage.

1/10.

Not as bad as some say
mattsmith-0352022 December 2020
Some people are too critical. This movie may not be a masterpiece, but it's well made. The pace is great, never much slows down, keeps going to the next scene and keeps you wondering what's going on. Sure, you start getting ideas in your head about which characters are "in on it" but EVERYONE can't be, so you're never really sure.

Not so much a "thriller" as you might expect, but kind of a mystery....is the main protagonist just crazy? Is he on to something?

Who can he believe in? And that, I believe is the message here...careful who and what you put your trust into.

Suspense and a Bit of Usual Suspects' Keyser Soze in Reverse
drtinaferguson29 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Not sure why this movie has such bad ratings. The acting is so good...Aaron Eckhart really feels unstable. The setting, music...great. The suspense and pacing works better than so many other psychological thriller type movies. My husband and I felt the way it was filmed (the shaky cam that is so popular these days) plus sweeping shots were distracting at times, but not bad enough to quit watching. Open loops were tied up at the end too...as in, why is it so easy for this guy to get around town?

We didn't find it confusing...more riveting because you think it's one thing then you question what you think and then we said...ah...we were right!!! Great fun and a nice hour and a half movie with a great cast. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

When Zero Is Not An Option.
Tommy Lee Jones needs a better agent, because this is absolutely unforgivable, and my only hope is that he's so broke he was forced to make this awful excuse for a movie.

Can we knock it off, once and for all, with this virtue signaling, wokest of the woke nonsense? There's nothing worse than criticizing and lecturing from the weirdos in Hollyweird as they sit in their ivory towers, surrounded by bodyguards and piles of money because they're capable of reciting lines off a page.

If you're so virtuous, open your doors and take in a few illegals and throw money by the boxful out into the streets. Until then, shut up and entertain us.

Confusing
Gordon-1129 May 2021
The story is very confusing and tried to be too clever. The events weren't explained so well, and there are numerous twists. I don't actually know what really happened.

Incomprehensible
danny-prichard18 April 2021
What in the holy heck was that? A muddled, incomprehensible, confused mess. I couldn't tell if I was watching a murder mystery, one man's descent into madness, a science fiction movie, or a big-screen version of an LSD trip. What a horrible movie. I'm a Tommy Lee Jones fan but even he seemed high in this flick.

Just plain bad.
theguy9 May 2021
I forced myself to watch this entire movie, and it was just awful. The conspiracy theory failed to captivate me - in short the film was boring and dragged along for hours. The "big reveal" at the end was flat and predictable.

The whole movie felt like a really bad independent film. Not sure how this one ever got made.

Just plain bad.

Wandering Eyes
thesar-23 August 2021
Wish they just would've played this old story straight. Definitely a couple of extra stars would've wandered into my rating.

Seen enough movies and you know where this is headed after a while. But, to keep the movie's "suspense," it's about a grieving ex-cop whose wife is comatose & daughter dead after a car accident and his quest to prove conspiracy theories. He does wander into a Wicker Man mystery in a small desert town and believes he can prove: everyone's in on it!

I'm not a fan of conspiracy theorists. I pity them and their quest for attention. Boy, do they want to be right and brag they're one of the very few & brave who knew the big, bad secrets when everyone else was ignorant. They want you to question everything when they, themselves, just believe one anonymous and laughably unreliable source.

Well, that's this movie and we're following that sad man around while he is both "on the run" from "them" and finding every clue involved in a big cover-up that no one else can prove. At first, I wish they gave us a reliable narrator as this movie has some very fine actors. But, I didn't create this movie.

Or did I? Prove it! Look it up!

Just kidding. It's passable and mercifully short. I love small desert town mysteries and Tommy Lee Jones. So, it's such a slight recommendation.

***

Final Thoughts: Don't watch the trailer. As always, they spoil the very last shot. THIS conspiracy is real, by the way. They purposely ruin the third act, twists and/or final shot in far too many trailers. I had to give up on watching trailers I used to love my whole life since the nice surprise of the movies was wiped out long before I even see the movie.

Mixed feelings about this one
Vince60422 December 2020
Without giving away the plot, the last third of the movie becomes very confusing, and is in my opinion, what shot itself in the foot. By the end, you'll either think to yourself, 'what did I just watch?' or you might try to make sense of it all.

Almost everything in this movie seems to be on point in terms of the quality, cast and production. Had they just ended it normally like any other decent mystery/thriller, it probably would've been a good movie.

Something different thank goodness
shbs-715945 January 2021
Yes there are drawbacks to the quality of this movie in places, but if you JUST APPROACH IT AS AN INDIE THRILLER, YOU WILL BE PLEASED. If all movies looked like big studio products, how very vanilla they would be after awhile.

I thought the portrayal of his PTSD episodes were really quite good; and the feeling of confusion that is generated throughout the film is likely a deliberate plot device to make the viewer feel the main character's own confusion, pain and puzzlement.

Depending upon your sound system, some of the dialogue is muffled, probably because the desert wind buffeting sound had to be canceled out. Just put on your channel captioning, you'll be fine.

If this movie isn't for you, you will know at the 25 minute mark. Maybe you'll come back to it one day when you're snowed in like me, maybe you won't.

Overall I really liked this, it's definitely worthwhile for something different during lockdown. Sometimes it's just nice to remember that the U.S. is bigger than one type of climate, and movies can have more than one style of presentation.

Uninspirational, Thought Revoking ....
parker-530942 May 2021
This movie is piece of %#@$ !

This is a movie with absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

There was not one aspect of this movie I found acceptable.

I even disliked the previews on the DVD. I even disliked the movie introduction and the movie credits at the end of the movie.

An egg-timer was used to compute the time it took before I lost interest in this movie after clicking PLAY.

I can never get this time back.

You've been warned.

Here for Aaron Eckhart
cynvanity17 December 2020
I love conspiracy thrillers! Wander has tons of energy and manages to keep the same pace right to the end. There is great cinematography as well with a few memorable images in the New Mexico setting. The music, sound and thunder are all well managed and put to good use. The critics just don't like this because it's not a typical Hollywood!

Catchy Performances Made This One A Good Watch.
wandernn1-81-68327428 November 2021
What can I say? I liked this one. I really liked the ending. I liked a lot of the way the movie was shot. Great performances by Eckhart, Winnick, Jones, CRUZ, and Graham. Cruz has really done well in growth in this later stage of his career. Music? Adds to the 'craziness' vibe this movie puts off largely.

I'm going to give an extra star for the ending and directing. Really I'd give this one a 6/10 but I'm going to go berzerk and give it a 7.

Just bad everything.
mrscottmc10 December 2020
This movie is going to end up in art schools for what not to do. I wrote down the writer and director's names. I then created an alert, so that if they ever do another movie I will not have to see it. How do you get that much talent in a movie and just blow it?
